  • PS3 gets some MMO lovin' in Japan

    by

There's a thread over at NeoGaf reporting that Japanese game publisher Koei, which is famous for its Dynasty Warriors beat-em-up/battlefield-strategy hybrid games, might be developing an MMO. The company's Tokyo Game Show page was briefly updated with an entry for an MMO title for both PC and PS3. When the mistake was caught the entry was immediately taken down. Fans of Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the Three Kingdoms are very excited. Everyone else can probably move on, because Koei has done pretty little that wasn't at least mostly the same concept as one of those. Also, our friends at PS3 Fanboy have celebrated the launch of the free-to-play Asian PS3 MMO Angel Love Online (a veritable cute fest, that one) by writing up a guide to getting the game running for non-Japanese users. Angel Love is currently available only through the Japanese PlayStation Network store, but that sort of thing has never stopped anyone smart and resourceful, has it? If you succeed, you'll get to play it entirely in Japanese! Oh, yay! It looks very Secret of Mana-esque.Due to the language barrier, most Western PS3 owners will probably want to wait for The Agency, Free Realms, and DC Universe Online, but if you can't wait, here you go. And remember, if seeing Japanese culture Lost in Translation is what you want, there's always TV. In Japan. Read on below the cut for a look at Angel Love Online.

This week's big game on PS3 Fanboy? A little gem called EyePet, which actually generated four times more traffic than Heavy Rain. We don't think anyone here (or at SCEE) could've predicted the incredible response for this cuddly critter. The fine fellas over at PS3 Fanboy are becoming just a little obsessed over Trophies. We're not judging, but one of them asked the other day if Willy Wonka's shrinking ray could be used to miniaturize real-life trophies to the point where they could just push them into the code? We didn't have a clue how to answer that. Thankfully, they've discovered a healthy outlet for their Trophy vice with the PS3 Fanboy Trophy Portal®.The PS3 Fanboy Trophy Portal will update with the latest information on games supporting Sony's achievement system. It will list the Trophies available in each game and should be kept up to date. Feel free to ask for a refund on your site subscription if they don't keep the list current.

This week has actually been pretty crazy -- possibly even crazier than The Last Guy developers seen in the above clip. With E3 coming around, we're both really excited and close to losing our marbles in preparation for the big E this year. We have already made our E3 predictions and have sorted out our meet up plans. Check, check, check. All that's left to do now is go to the show and bring home all the goods to you fine folk! So until then, sit back, relax, and read PS Fanboy's Week in Review to get you up to date on all things Sony. Previews PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm "Ultimate Ninja Storm, more than any anime game before it, looks just as good, if not better, than its source material. Not only is the level of detail stunning, the fluidity of the animations and the strong use of motion blur give it a truly cinematic look." Columns Give me a reason to fight! This week's big top story was all about Firmware 2.40: its release, initial hiccups, and then getting pulled down. • Echochrome: The PSP's philosophical answer to Brain Age

For most of our younger readers, school's no longer in session in observation of the midsummer months -- though we're certain that our studious readers won't allow their minds become dull as rusty butter knives during their valuable vacation time. That's why we turn your attention to a fascinating article written by PS3 Fanboy's newest columnist, Ph.D candidate and gaming enthusiast Kylie Prymus, who examines the effect that the Escher-esque Echochrome can have on our perception of our own three-dimensional world. Prymus posits that Echochrome's unique, manipulatable 2D perspective is not only jarring when compared to the robust 3D engines we've become accustomed to seeing in most games, but it also points out the "frailty of our own perceptual apparatus", which is fundamentally two-dimensional. Those who still possess unblown minds might want to give the article a read -- if only to give you some Hawking-quality discussion material with which to impress your gaming cohorts.

Ah, this is the image that launched a thousand murmurs across the sea of internets. We were tipped off early in the week from (possibly) eager developers willingly gushing about Sony's trophy system. At the moment, this image and others like it should still be taken with skepticism. We suppose it can't (read: definitely won't) be too long before we see something official. In the meantime, read up on what else we Sony Fanboys have been writing about this past week. Our top headlines are after the break. Columns Echochrome - the new Brain Age? "What Echochrome does, quite brilliantly, is tweak our perception of dimensionality in an interactive way not possible with Escher drawings or Penrose triangles." Previews PS3 Fanboy Hands-on: SOCOM Confrontation "Take into consideration that almost everything you can see, you can get to. More importantly, note that almost every building in the game can be entered as well, maximizing the playable area within each territory."
