Microsoft is hosting a special Xbox Live event in Japan this weekend. Similar to Game with Fame, Japanese gamers will be able to play Resident Evil 5 with Japanese celebrities in the Xbox Live Park event. Taking place this Sunday, the event will allow lucky gamers to play Resident Evil 5 with gravure idols China Fukunaga (left) and Sayuki Matsumoto (right). Shiro Suzuki (guess which one he is) will be commentating the Xbox Live Park event on Nico Nico Video. Gamers in Japan looking to play with Ms. Fukunaga should send a friend request to the gamertag LIVE Park 07. Ms. Matsumoto will be using the gamertag LIVE Park 08.The only question left -- and the only important one, really -- is who gets to play as Sheva?

  • Capcom publicity stunt loses realistic fake limbs in London

A Capcom Europe publicity stunt for Resident Evil 5 took an unexpected turn when organizers lost some fairly realistic-looking (and quite) fake severed limbs. Gamezine reports the publisher held a competition in London earlier today, where participants were asked to find bloody body parts hidden around the city (the winner received a trip for two to Africa). Things went a tiny bit awry when not all the appendages were discovered by the limb hunters -- and were no longer found in the organizer's designated locations.Capcom is asking people who find the limbs to return or dispose of them in a "careful manner." For "added gore," chicken livers were used to make the parts more realistic and could be harmful due to bacteria -- if you found a severed appendage in London, don't eat it. Although residents did complain to police during the competition, no charges were made. We're not even going to discuss what would have gone down if this stunt had been attempted in Manhattan.

Resident Evil 5 'Versus' DLC confirmed [update]

    03.12.2009

Click to embiggen. We spotted it and now it's reality: Capcom will be adding several new online multiplayer modes to Resident Evil 5, for a price. The "Versus" pack will allow up to four players to compete across two different game types, including Slayer's Rule, a "point-based game that challenges players to kill Majinis," and Survivor's Rule, which focuses on player-vs-player combat, with the last person standing claiming victory. Each game mode will support one-on-one, or two-vs-two play.Capcom says Versus mode will be available "a few weeks" after the game's release and will cost 400 ($5) and $3.99 $4.99 on Xbox Live and PSN, respectively. Update: Capcom has noted that the cheaper price on PS3 was an error. Equality for all!%Gallery-47571%

  • Pinpoint exactly when Resident Evil's Chris Redfield started taking steroids

Having watched GameTrailers' video on the evolution of Chris Redfield through the Resident Evil series, it becomes quite clear that he began his steroid abuse sometime after the events of Code: Veronica ... maybe Umbrella Chronicles. We understand the stresses of holding back the zombie apocalypse may have taken its toll on Redfield, but there's no need for him to hit the juice. Although we can't verify his steroid use from the bulging biceps and mountainous veins he has in Resident Evil 5, we're sure a testicular exam and a bacne (back acne) check could confirm our suspicions. Chris, we're only calling you out in public because we want you to get better, brother. See you later this week -- if Avon doesn't kill us all first. Check out the full Chris Redfield evolution video after the break.%Gallery-5253%

  • A closer look at Resident Evil 5's Progenitor Virus kit

We decided to take a closer look at the Progenitor Virus Detection and Suppression Kit that was shipped along with the Collector's Edition of the game to certain outlets. Justin showed off some of the wares in his unboxing video, and we decided to don the rubber gloves and face mask, and activate the included discs inside the kit. You can see the resulting video above. While not really groundbreaking or heart attack inducing (like the game), Disc #1 declared our MacBook Pro to be 98% "infected." And people claim the Mac is virus-free.The phone number that pops up when the second disc runs is (718) TRI-9446, and it connects you to a support line for the virus which currently has a hold time of 72 hours. Sound familiar? It's a bit similar to the Fallout 3 number you could call (and still can) to get put on interminable hold with Vault-tec systems. Interestingly, the Tricell number lets you leave a message. Naturally, we left one to see if we might get a call back. OH PLEASE OH PLEASE. We need more rubber gloves.NOTE: We heard from a Capcom rep that the "0% infection rate" happens only 5% of the time. So I guess we're ultra-rare at Joystiq. There are five different possible results, and we just happened to strike on the most visually boring one. Oops. We'll strive for a reshoot soon and add it to this post.... if we can find the PS3 in the dumpster.

  • WSJ explores claims of racism in Resident Evil 5

    by
    Ben Gilbert

    03.11.2009

The Wall Street Journal's Jamin Brophy-Warren has a piece today exploring the racial connotations some are seeing in Capcom's latest effort, Resident Evil 5. The game's producer Jun Takeuchi recently said, "There is no racial element to it at all," and Capcom's Chris Kramer expands on that point, stating to the WSJ that the game adopts an "anti-colonialist" stance. Mr. Kramer is referring to white protagonist Chris Redfield, shooting his way through RE5's African non-zombies, and the imagery it represents with regards to traditional Western colonialism on the continent. The theme of the piece is one of exploring whether or not the game is racist, rather than starting with a condemnation and then going forward like we've seen so many times in mainstream video game coverage. He speaks to a variety of major game developers (from Fallout 3's Todd Howard to Dead Space's Glen Schofield) and even broaches the topic of racism in American society being perpetuated by a largely caucasian game industry. Surprisingly, no sweeping claims are made and no aspersions cast. Bravo, we say!

If you're near London's Trafalgar Square on March 12 and find some severed body parts, you could be a winner. (As long as they're fake and zombie-like, otherwise ring the police.) Capcom's wacky UK marketing folk have decided to hide the parts -- arms, legs, torsos and heads -- about the area as part of a Resident Evil 5 launch contest. The person who finds the most bits & pieces between 9 a.m. and 12 noon local time will win themselves a trip to Africa. In order to be considered for the prize, participants must email Capcom beforehand (info at the source link) and be willing to stand atop Westminster Bridge, wave their bounty and shout "Kijuju!" (A common sight in London, we're told.)

PS3 owners of Resident Evil 5 will find a special surprise waiting for them when comparing their Trophy info with friends. Capcom has (accidentally?) revealed information about the game's upcoming DLC through newly uploaded Trophies. The DLC appears to introduce a number of new online modes: Slayers, Survivors, Team Slayers, Team Survivors and Versus. It's not exactly clear what these modes entail, but they appear to be competitive modes. "Team Survivors" gives us hope that Capcom is working on a co-operative mode inspired by Resident Evil Outbreak Left 4 Dead.See the new Trophies after the break.

We got a big package from Capcom this morning, containing not only the Collector's Edition of Resident Evil 5, but also an adorable zombie detection and suppression kit from the fine people of Tricell. What's it all look like? Well, we're glad you asked, as we've lovingly placed a full-on dissection just after the break. Seriously, it's a dissection. There are rubber gloves involved.Oh, and we're going to be giving the whole thing away soon, so stay tuned.

As happy as we were to learn that "Mercenaries" mode was returning for Resident Evil 5, we were a little put out to learn that you could only play with a friend if he was sharing the couch with you. Luckily our disappointment was short-lived, as IGN reports the mode has been patched on 360 to add online play, before the public has even gotten its mitts on it. Update: A patch for the PS3 version has been released. The evil won't be resident for a few days yet, but you can simulate the mode for yourself right now: Just check out these videos and imagine a racist, homophobic 12-year-old is shouting at you and using up all the first aid spray.

Jim Sonzero, the cinematic director who worked on soon-to-be-released Resident Evil 5 told MTV that he's in talks with Capcom to develop a live-action film based on one of the company's properties. No young upstart, Sonzero has worked on commercials and a feature film, Wes Craven's Pulse (presumably, Jim Sonzero's Pulse lacked a little marquee punch).Sonzero's not talking specific IPs, so we'll leave it to you in the comments to speculate. Here, we'll start. Vin Diesel + blue armor + an arm that is a gun = box office gold.

  • Win a trip to Waverly Hills Sanatorium from Game Crazy during RE5 launch event

Game Crazy is holding a little palpitation-inducing promotion during its Resident Evil 5 midnight launches this Thursday. Five customers who purchase the game will find a "T-Virus" icon inside the box, which will grant them a trip to Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, KY -- a "haunted hospital" shut down in the '80s for "alleged" patient abuse.Although the probability of winning is slim to none, just keep an eye out for the icon if you purchase Capcom's action-horror title from a Game Crazy location. The winners of the "fright-filled" trip to the sanatorium can bring a guest along for the loco experience July 11-12. There are also five T-Virus stickers in boxes at Hollywood Video and Movie Gallery -- those winners receive a year of free video game and movie rentals.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Avon_teams_with_Resident_Evil_Umbrella_Corp_for_face_cream'; ... OK, so this is a joke, right? Avon isn't serious with the design of its Derma-full face cream, an exact replica of Resident Evil Apocalypse's T-virus. We were astounded recently when we caught the commercial for Avon's product on television, a "skin care breakthrough," delivering "fullness perfected, not injected" for aging skin. The beauty in all of this is not only does Avon's bottle look like that of the T-virus, but, in the film, the Umbrella Corporation's Regenerate product was also originally intended as a similar skin-rejuvenation cream. We're thinking some young marketing guy at Avon got a big laugh when he got this passed. Enjoy comparing both commercials after the break.

  • Wii's Resident Evil fans will be 'very happy very soon,' Capcom says

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Wii_s_Resident_Evil_fans_will_be_very_happy_very_soon'; Though we're usually reticent to make a connection between ravenous undead hordes and happiness, Capcom's Resident Evil franchise has proven adept at uniting dire consequences with gaming euphoria. With Resident Evil 5 set to launch on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 13th, Wii owners may have felt somewhat left out of all the neck-chomping fun. While submitting that Resident Evil 5 "pushes the boundaries of graphics and gameplay," Capcom's Associate Product Marketing Manager, Matt Dahlgren, had something more to say when prodded about a Wii version. "It was made for the Xbox 360 and PS3," he told our correspondent, Xav de Matos, at a recent Capcom event in Toronto. "That being said, Nintendo Wii fans will be very happy very soon."When asked if we could expect an announcement during this month's GDC or E3 later this year, Dahlgren only offered, "Very soon." The exact nature of this impending happiness is up for speculation (examples: Biohazard 0's Wii port coming stateside! A remake! Umbrella Chronicles 2!), so we'll leave that to you.

  • Anthropologist says Resident Evil 5 is not racist, Takeuchi continues defense

Everyone has an opinion on this whole Resident Evil 5 racism debacle -- well, everyone except a real expert on the science of race relations. Prompted to settle the ongoing debate once and for all, Videogamer.com has employed Glenn Bowman, University of Kent senior lecturer at the Department of Anthropology, to weigh in on the subject matter. So, is it racist? Long-short of Bowman's response: "I don't think it's racist. I think people are looking too quickly to be able to jam that label onto it."Bowman argues that the knee-jerk reaction of attributing racism to black characters being portrayed as bad guys "is actually itself a kind of inverted racism which says that you can't have scary people who are black." This sounds a lot like something RE5 producer Jun Takeuchi recently said to Yahoo! Games: "We don't want to create something that offends a certain element of society. At the same time, we don't want to be in a place where you can't set a game in Africa or in an Arabic country. That in itself is a form of racism. For us, as creators of entertainment, it's important for us to strike that right balance."Interestingly enough, Bowman tries to strike that balance by painting a "counter-thematic" of anti-colonialism: "This whole idea of the victimization of Africa by pharmaceutical companies, by terrorist groups, all of whom seem to be run by white characters who are coming in and exploiting people ... seems to me to be far more damning of the colonial powers towards Africa than it says anything about whether or not blacks are some sort of savages. The blacks here are clearly being set up as victims, alterity, frightening." When the game hits stores next Friday, perhaps you can judge for yourself.Source 1: VideogamerSource 2: Yahoo! Games

As Famitsu shows us, Japanese gamers were anxious to get their hands on Capcom's latest run-and-gun shooter entry in the survival-horror genre, Resident Evil 5, lining up before stores opened early in the morning. In fact, some of them even purchased the Xbox 360 bundle, as evidenced here.Of course, most of the individuals picking up Capcom's latest were young men, but Famitsu said some females were getting in on the action as well. Sadly, Famitsu doesn't say which version of RE5 sold better, so the fanboys will have to stick with their delusions as argument topics for now.%Gallery-43985%

Home Europe has received a large update today, including new furniture, costumes and a new game space. Watchmen fever continues with virtual copies of the graphic novel, as well as a Doomsday clock, being offered for your apartment. They're pretty pointless, but they're free! New Street Fighter IV costumes (Ryu, Ken, Chun Li and Guile) are now available to purchase from the Threads store. The Home Square also got updated with a new minigame. You can find it on the "grassy knoll," near one of the massive billboards. Another space has also been added to the world map: the Resident Evil 5 Studio Lot. Only a small section of the lot is currently available, though the rest is promised to be with us soon. Signposts around the lot give you a themepark-style overview of the area, including a section which you can only access once you've played the game. Interestingly, there's an arcade machine which, when used, asks you to input the Resident Evil 5 disc. We've no idea whether this will unlock a minigame or just start up Resident Evil 5 itself, but we're intrigued to find out.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
