"Resident Evil 6" may not be representative of the number of Resident Evil games that exist in total, but it looks to be the title of the next entry in Capcom's long-running zombie series. A retail poster spotted by one GameStop-employed IGN reader outs the title, a November 20, 2012, launch date on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and a perfectly spooky drawing of the number six. Additionally, GamesBeat purports to have insider info from a Capcomer in the know, who says that RE6 will star series vets Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy. Everyone's favorite mysterious, violent lady, Ada Wong, is also rumored role in the yet-to-be-announced game. Scant other details were given, though it is said to be developed by an internal Japanese team at Capcom that's "aiming for a cross between the action/horror blend of Resident Evil 4 ... and the far more action-oriented Resident Evil 5." After The Sixth Axis tracked down Capcom as the source of a recent viral ad campaign ("No Hope Left"), the company's US reps refused to comment on the meaning of the ads. At the time, it seemed likely that the faux graffiti was tied to the Resident Evil franchise given the stylized biohazard symbol found on the "o" in "No," but now it seems all the more likely to be tied to an announcement at 5PM ET today, lining up with a notably direct video added to the ad's website (found after the break). We'll be here at 5PM -- and beyond, of course -- to let you know if we hear anything more official. Update 1: IGN is further reporting that both Chris Redfield and Leon Kennedy will be playable characters, each teaming up with "unnamed partners" for their own campaign branches -- branches that will apparently cross paths at some point in the game. Ada Wong is supposed to be playable at some point after completing both Leon and Chris' storylines, though a third unnamed character will also have a campaign that must be completed as well before Wong is accessible. All three campaigns will allegedly be available from the jump, allowing players to jump between stories. And finally, RE6 is supposed to be set "across the globe," with China mentioned specifically. This is all according to "sources within the development team." Update 2: Capcom has since confirmed the game as heading to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 20 with a PC release to follow. • Resident Evil 6 includes Chinese setting, voice actress resume suggests

Voice actress Wendy Mok listed a role as a "Chinese Villager/Zombie" in Resident Evil 6 on her East West Players profile, according to The Silent Chief. The listing has since been removed, but TSC captured an image before its removal, which you can see above. Perhaps she and Joe Cappelletti updated their resumes at the same time. This suggests two interesting things: first, that there is a Resident Evil 6, which actually still hasn't been announced. Second, it implies that at least part of the game takes place in China ... or, we suppose, takes place somewhere else, but includes immigrant zombies. Of course, it's possible that Mok worked on some other RE-related item, and just mistakenly identified it as Resident Evil 6.

Here's your first sign that production has actually started on a Resident Evil 6 -- besides, you know, all those Capcom producers saying it's going to be a long, long wait. Voice actor Joe Cappelletti (whose voice you might not know but have probably heard anyway) lists the unannounced game as one of his recent voice credits, as you can see on the page with the distracting background above. Cappelletti also has Combat Wings listed as a Capcom title, however, and there is currently no game that Capcom makes with that name. There is a Combat Wings: Battle of Britain by City Interactive, but nothing Capcom has announced. Maybe Cappelletti is just confused -- he also lists Steel Battalion on there, but presumably that is the Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor title coming to Kinect. Not that he wouldn't know what he worked on, but clearly he's been busy. At any rate, if Resident Evil 6 production is underway, that's good to know -- hopefully we've got one or two of the eight years it's expected to take out of the way already.

It sounds like that high-stakes game of Blackjack might not be necessary in deciding the producer of Resident Evil 6. In an interview with Xbox World 360 magazine (via online affiliate CVG), Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2 producer Jun Takeuchi acknowledged his intent to give up a possible leadership role in developing the next installment in the series. "Personally, I don't think I'm gonna deal with Resident Evil 6 at all," Takeuchi explained, "as far as the series is concerned I'm not planning to return until at least two more Olympics have passed!" You mean ... in four years? (Why couldn't he just say "in four years?") Well then, we hope to hear more about the future of Resident Evil in just 1/24th of an Olympics calendar. Which is to say, in June, at E3 2010.

  • Producer: Wesker not returning to Resident Evil (yeah, right)

It's going to be difficult to be completely spoiler-free for this one, so fair warning. During a panel at Comic-Con, Resident Evil 5 producer Masachika Kawata was asked if Albert Wesker would return in a future Resident Evil title, considering Resident Evil 5 leaves you believing he's gone. According to SIliconera, Kawata says Wesker's days in Resident Evil are over. "Even if you want Albert Wesker to come back there is no chance of that happening," Kawata told the audience. Of course, Kawata forgets that Wesker will be seen in the upcoming Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, which takes place in Raccoon City during Resident Evil 2's storyline. As for Wesker going the way of the Dodo, we'll believe that when we see it. Or don't see him, we should say.

Curious about the direction the next entry in the Resident Evil will follow? By the sound of things, so are the franchise's tried-and-true creators. During Capcom's San Diego Comic Con panel, Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi responded to a fan's query about the possibility of a series reboot with a startling answer -- he's apparently playing a long-running game of Blackjack with fellow RE5 producer Masachika Kawata to see who will be in charge of the next Resident Evil title. Seriously. We're not sure if Takeuchi's response was sincere -- after all, he later explained that "it doesn't appear as though either of us is going to be in charge." Still, we wouldn't be surprised if he was telling the truth. There's certainly precedent for this kind of thing. Remember when Satoru Iwata won the presidency of Nintendo from Hiroshi Yamauchi in a high-stakes Cribbage game?

  • Kawata: Resident Evil 6 'could take 8 years'

Masachika Kawata thinks a Resident Evil 5 sequel could be as far away as eight years, but hopes it's closer to four. Speaking with The Gadget Show, the RE5 producer said it could be a long time before Xbox 360 and PS3 owners see Resident Evil 6, if they ever see it at all. A lot can change for games over time, as our flow chart explains (it's 110% scientific, we swear).Over time, games can advance with new ideas and bring our favorite characters into exciting new situations. However, sometimes (much to the chagrin of plenty of our own readers) things don't change enough, while others believe the old stuff works just fine. Preferences. They so crah-zay![Via D+Pad]
