  • EVE Evolved: The art of tanking - Armour tanking

    by

Back in 2005, I became obsessed with the art of tanking in EVE Online. Before writing the definitive tanking guide for EON issue 2 (for which the EVE community dubbed me "the tanking guy"), I spent a lot of time working out the mathematics behind the art. At a time when people preferred a trial and error approach to combat, I went as far as to create a spreadsheet to automate calculations on the strength of your tank. Over the years, more advanced tools like EFT (EVE Fitting Tool) have been released which have this functionality and more. In this short series of articles, I aim to cover tanking from start to finish in a concise and informative manner. In this first part, I begin with an introduction to tanking and follow up with a brief guide on how to select which type of tank to use and a complete overview of armour tanking. What is tanking?: Any MMO player will know the role of the "Tank" but the word's usage in EVE Online is a little different. Broadly speaking, a tank is whatever you use to keep yourself alive and it's something every ship can do. The MMO holy trinity of tank, healer and damage-dealer are combined into every ship in EVE. Because of this ability to self-heal, the word "tank" in EVE generally refers to the combination of both resisting damage and healing it. Fitting your ship then becomes a matter of balancing between tank and damage. Read on to find out how to select what type of tank to use and learn all about armour tanking.

In a new post on the PlayStation Blog, Insomniac community director, Brian Intihar, drops some Resistance-related info – and the prices on map packs for the original Resistance: Fall of Man. Previously $7.99, the full collection of four maps will set you back zero dollars beginning tomorrow, December 11. (The original two-map pack debuted in June of last year at $7.99, and was followed by two more maps in November '07 for $4.99.) There are still people playing the original game – now a PS3 Greatest Hit – but most have moved on to the sequel, a likely reason for the price reduction elimination. Insomniac will further add to the PS Store's delivery of free stuff tomorrow with three new, no-cost Resistance 2 themes for your XMB.

This week on the Japanese weekly sales charts, two PS3 games make a commendable debut. Yakuza 3 Way of the Samurai 3 (thanks, Fiddlesworth!) was sucked in and spat out by the top dog Kirby Super Star Ultra, but it still managed to land in second place, selling 81,047 copies. And who said Japanese gamers don't enjoy first-person shooters? Resistance 2 makes it into the top 5 by the skin of its teeth, selling 33,584 copies. While Grand Theft Auto IV for the PS3 is still selling relatively strong, taking eleventh place, LittleBigPlanet isn't doing quite as well -- Media Molecule's title in currently in twenty second place. Check out the full chart, after the jump.

Were you able to go to Insomniac's Community Day? Don't worry -- neither were we (California's far away!). For those that weren't able to make it, the PlayStation.blog has a new video highlighting events from the day's activities. Obviously, a lot of Resistance-themed talks were at hand, as various members of the Insomniac Games team shared their studio to their loyal fans. This outreach shows why Insomniac Games is such an incredible studio.

Lucky Californians. Looks like you'll be able to attend not one, but two Insomniac-sponsored Resistance 2 events. First is the now-standard midnight launch party. The real-world PlayStation Store at the San Francisco Metreon will feature Ted Price and the Insomniac gang giving away swag, autographs, and photo opportunities. This event will happen on November 4th, at midnight. Obviously, you'll want to get there a bit early. You should also mark November 7th on your calendars. If you are at least 17 years old and live/plan to be in the Los Angeles area on November 7, you can e-mail RSVP@insomniacgames.com to get details on a "community day," which will open the studio's doors to the public. There, you'll be able to see the house of Ratchet and hang out with the Insomniac gang. If you've never been to a development studio before, this may be your chance!

IGN has an interesting video, comparing the two distinct styles of Resistance: Fall of Man and the upcoming Resistance 2. It's been two years since Insomniac's PS3 launch title debuted, and it's very clear that the team has made significant improvements to the game engine. The single most noteworthy addition: color. Instead of the browns and grays that were so prevalant in the first game, we see a vibrant world of color in the second. Maybe it's a bit too colorful. Watch the video, after the break.

Wow, someone at Sony's advertising agency deserves a bonus. MotorStorm's commercial was awesome. The Leviathan Resistance building ad is also awesome. And now, this TV ad, which we've embedded after the break. Remember Sony: less creepy baby dolls, and more awesome commercials.

  • Online co-op in Resistance 2 might be too big [Update]

    by

    10.17.2008

Who doesn't like a lengthy game? Resistance 2 is trying to give gamers an unprecedented amount of gaming content on one disc. The single player campaign, according to Insomniac, should clock in at 9-11 hours. It will take 18-24 hours to unlock all the single player Trophies. However, the much-loved online co-op mode will add another 10-15 hours of gameplay. If you want to level up your favorite class, expect to take 50-60 hours on that. And then, for the completionist, you'll want 150-180 hours to get all the upgrades for all three classes in online co-op.Thank goodness you don't have to pay for online access on PSN, as we're sure there are going to be quite a number of people ready to take this MMO-like challenge. Also, we're glad we don't have to level up every class to unlock a Trophy -- that would've been disastrous.Update: Corrected single player time estimates.

In addition to the newly announced PSP Plus, Sony unveiled yet another way for your PSP and PS3 to interact with each other. All you have to do is connect a PSP running Resistance: Retribution with a PS3 running Resistance 2. Under R2's option screen, select "Infect your PSP!" and your PSP will enter "Infection mode."This "Infection mode" will cause your character in Retribution, former British Marine James Grayson, to become infected with an alternate mutated form of the Chimera virus Nathan Hale is infected with. You gain a new uniform, R2 weaponry, additional abilities, access to new Chimera areas, and more. Even the story will be slightly altered -- characters in the story will be aware of your Chimerian infection which will alter their behavior accordingly. For more details, Andrew has written a hands-on over at Joystiq that you can access right here.Source -- JoystiqSource -- PS.Blog

Remember Nintendo's attempts at GBA-GC connectivity? Well, Sony may be a generation late to the party, but at least they're doing it right. For this interesting gaming experiment, you'll need a PSP, a PS3, Resistance 2 and Resistance Retribution. And the results are quite interesting. Earlier, we noted that you'll be able to use your DualShock controller with Retribution through a new feature called PSP Plus. However, there's even more fun to be had through the game's unique Infection mode. In this new feature, players can connect PSP's Resistance Retribution via USB cable to a PS3 running Resistance 2. From R2, players can go into the menu and activate Infection, which will almost instantly transform the PSP game. %Gallery-27792%

One of Sony's upcoming PSP games, Resistance Retribution, will utilize a newly developed technology called "PSP Plus." The feature will allow players of Retribution to connect their systems to the PS3, in order to enable use of PS3 wireless controllers. Using the DualShock will enable dual-analog control in the game. In addition, rumble will be supported. This potential use of connectivity was hinted at in a patent filed over a year ago.Other games may be able to potentially utilize PSP Plus -- however, it is currently a Retribution-only tech. Stay tuned as we reveal the exciting additions PS3's Resistance 2 and PSP's Resistance Retribution will bring (together!).
