  • What's the point of resist gear?

Ghostcrawler stopped by the beta mage forums the other day in order to address the issue of resists and immunities on the part of certain bosses. The problem here is that are sometimes special bosses in one raid instance or another that require players to temporarily put aside all the normal gear they've been working so hard to get and put on special gear just for that fight. For example if the boss is a fire elemental, then perhaps they all have to get a separate set of gear with fire resistance on it, and put it on when they get to that boss -- without it they don't have a chance of success. For other boss fights, they may find that the boss is immune to one type of damage or another, and this requires them to respec to a different talent build, or else play a supportive role whereas before they might have been the star damage dealer. There are clear reasons why many players don't like these mechanics. Who wants to go to all the trouble of collecting a whole set of gear that you use only for one fight? Who wants to let that gear take up all that bag and bank space? Who wants to be shut out of their favorite talent build or sit somewhat on the sidelines just because the bosses they're fighting are immune to their prefered style of damage? So Ghostcrawler comes in with the developer's logic on this issue: They don't want the raid instance to be a simple thing where you just move from one boss to the next boss, to the next, and so on. They want to break it up a bit so that different bosses require not only different strategies, but different gear, and different abilities, too. This adds a bit of anticipation, of having to get ready for the challenge rather than just stumbling into it and accidentally getting it right on the third or fourth try.

Look, you gotta understand, not everyone gets into a private party. But a public one? Man, you gotta have some bad luck -- or some funky smelling breath -- not to be invited in. Go on, prove that you're still worthy, apply for the Resistance 2 Public Beta. You can drop your answers here (remember, there's always a right answer, even if it doesn't count). Here's what Insomniac has to say:"We'll notify you via e-mail if you are accepted into the Public Beta. Space is limited. So, if you want to get a chance to try out all the new multiplayer features in Resistance 2, such as the 8-player co-op and up to 60-player competitive multiplayer, apply now! Good luck!"[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Looks like more of you will be playing with their Girls With A Stick fairly soon -- an application for the Resistance 2 public beta has arrived via a PlayStation Underground e-mail. The message urges "brave souls" to test out various features, mainly the 8-player online co-op and 60-player squad multiplayer. The application is simple: you simply need to sign in with your PSN ID, answer a few questions, and they will let you know if you've been selected by e-mail. Hurry though, they are "only accepting applications for a very limited time." The game arrives on November 4th in US and the 28th in Europe.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Are we allowed to say that Resistance 2 is "bigger, better and more badass" than the original PS3 launch title? Because that's exactly what it is. In many ways, R2 is incredibly predictable, offering all the improvements one would expect from a highly anticipated sequel. Improved visuals? Check. Better gameplay? Yep. More features? Of course. While Insomniac has been largely focused on its ambitious 60-player online multiplayer offering, yesterday's demonstration finally let us experience the single-player campaign for the first time. Finally, we could see what the new engine was capable of -- and it's much, much more than what the multiplayer has led us to believe. The new lighting and particle effects are particularly noteworthy. The expanded color palette is a refreshing change from the grays and various shades of brown so prominent in the original. In fact, the vibrant particle effects and bright, sunny presentation reminded us a little bit of Ratchet & Clank ... that is, until a Chimera exploded into bloody chunks.%Gallery-32473%

Click for high-res image If you're a regular reader of this site, then you shouldn't find yourself estranged upon hearing the name Resistance 2. In fact, it should really get you pumped up as you know as much as we do that it will be one of the biggest titles for the PS3 this holiday season. While many of you may be quietly ripping it up on Girl With A Stick, we haven't been left in the dark for our share of Chimera blasting. We've also got our own taste of the viral-infected shooter having played both the single player campaign and a full 8-player online co-op game. We first started things off by going through the single player campaign. There were two levels available to us: the tutorial level at the very start which takes place in Iceland, and the second took us to the forests of Orick, California -- to which you've already witnessed the opening cinema. The Iceland level looked incredibly familiar; in fact, the very first screenshots ever revealed on this game came from the Iceland level. Think back ... that had a Goliath in it. A Goliath in the opening mission? That's pretty intense considering how these babies didn't appear until much later in the original title. From the very beginning of the game, we could already feel the pace and tone, and it was definitely set to awesome.%Gallery-14695%

  • Ted Price: Resistance 2 is 'just about finished'

With Resistance 2 expected to drop into Chimera-occupied Chicago in early November, Ted Price, Insomniac's president and CEO, has come forward to confirm that the game is nearly complete. "The game is just about finished," commented Price in a recent interview with GameSpot, adding that the final three to four week push, dedicated to fine tuning and squashing bugs, is "always the most difficult." Price also adds that the team has been "loath to cut any corners during development," making simply getting to the finish line with Resistance 2 something of a challenge for the developers. We appreciate the effort, honestly; the last thing we want to worry about when facing down an impossibly huge leviathan is if our game will freeze before we can bring the massive baddie to his equally gargantuan knees.

click to embiggen Resistance Retribution was a surprise hit last month at E3, and we had another chance to play it at last week's Penny Arcade Expo. With more playtime, however, come burning questions that need to be answered. Thankfully, Sam Villanueva, Senior Designer at Bend Studio, was at hand to answer our queries and make sure we could sleep soundly again. Will you be optimizing Resistance Retribution for the PSP Brite? That's a good question. We'll be evaluating this. We're pretty deep in development right now. We'd like to optimize, but that could potentially mess with launch time. If we can do it without affecting the date our game comes out, we will. How does the game fit into the series? Retribution fits nicely between Resistance 1 and Resistance 2. It's a continuation of the European campaign, whereas Resistance 2 is the start of the American campaign. You are James Grayson and you're going in to destroy another Chimeran tower. We wanted the story to deal with some pretty deep, dark stuff. Lots of drama and mystery. The game starts with your brother being infected and you're forced to kill him, for example. Is there a multiplayer mode? Absolutely. We've got lots of cool multiplayer stuff which we'll be announcing soon. %Gallery-27792%

Gun-toting xenophobes, rejoice! Sony has confirmed that Resistance 2, much like all games ever, will have its North American release in the alarmingly crowded month of November -- the 4th, to be exact. Insomniac's ambitious first-person shooter will also arrive in the company of a fancy, $79.99 collector's edition, complete with the usual making-of videos, art books and snarling statuettes. If you're the impatient type who simply can't wait to take some shots with at a digital Chimera, you'll be pleased to note that Sony has a multiplayer and co-operative public beta planned for early October. To gain "guaranteed access," you'll either have to pre-order Resistance 2 at Gamestop, purchase an annual subscription to the PSN's interactive magazine Qore, or simply purchase Qore Episode 3. There's a free option too -- register here -- but it does not guarantee entry to the beta. %Gallery-14773%

Looks like Project Abraham, getawarjob and America First America Only, three of the four Resistance 2 ARG sites, have been met their ends. There is nothing left on getawarjob, while Project Abraham left us a few clues. A letter in the inbox shows the Project has been stopped and moved from Alaska to Bryce Canyon facility, as well as an end letter from Dr. Aklin summarizing the work she has done. The last test subject, Kenneth Danby, was apparently released as well.At America First America Only, a letter declaring "They've been on to us!" has been left behind. They are moving "further underground" and the last issue of their news letter, volume 7, is hidden away in their archives. The only site remaining is SrpaNet, but we haven't had any luck figuring out the new login. Is the Resistance 2 ARG over until the release of the game in a couple of months? Or will there be more? Luckily for us, there is a Resistance wiki over at Wikia, and almost all the documents on the site can be reviewed there. Check it out.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

  • Resistance 2 Collector's Edition to be simply irresistible

Do you feel confident in saying that you despise the chimera more than anyone else that you know? To be more specific, would you say you hate them twenty dollars more? You can prove your disdain for those yellow-eyed jerks by picking up the collector's edition for Resistance 2, recently unveiled by Amazon.com, which is quickly becoming one of the most comprehensive (if not somewhat unlikely) sources for video game news. Seriously. We're worried.Included in the bundle (which, for the mathematically challenged, is currently priced at $79.99) is a behind-the-scenes making-of documentary, video commentary from the game's developers, a "Twisted History" chronology video, an exclusive multiplayer character skin, a double-sided art book, and a preview of the heretofore unannounced Gathering Storm novel, which is based on the game. There's also a five and a half inch tall Chimera Hybrid action figure which, due to your unreasonable chimeric hatred, you'll probably just end up microwaving in effigy.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Download to PSP Ever wondered what an alien invasion of America would sound like ... in Japanese? Good, because this will hit the spot. This new trailer from PlayStation Japan highlights many of the epic battles that we've come to associate with the upcoming PS3-exclusive FPS. The game looks better with every new trailer they release, and this is no different. While this may tantalize our senses, we wonder how many Japanese (who usually dislike FPS games) will actually pay attention to this upcoming game. %Gallery-14695%

Repeating its E3 performance, LittleBigPlanet took top honors at this year's Games Convention show as the "Best PS3 Game." The closed beta for Resistance 2 is currently going on, and while you're here reading, someone else out there is saving America from a Chimera invasion. Luckily, you don't have to miss out on all the fun. While you wait for the public beta coming this September, you can check out eight minutes of gameplay footage right now; albeit, extremely blurry and unflattering footage. The level in the vid looks like the same outdoor woodland area you've seen in screenshots before. It may be difficult to see the little details due to the low quality, but one thing is for certain: Resistance 2's mulitplayer mode, overall, looks like pure carnage.[Thanks Zee]
