Do you have a friend on your XMB playing a game called Girl With a Stick? Well, guess what: it's the Resistance 2 closed beta. While these lucky few can enjoy some hot girl on stick action, the rest of us will have to wait until the public beta in September.[Thanks, Zee!]

If you're a member of the PlayStation Underground, you might have been selected to join an early private beta for Resistance 2, which -- as we've been told -- many lucky gamers have already downloaded and are currently playing. However, this doesn't mean that everyone who had plans to join the beta can get in at this time.If your golden ticket is through Qore, you won't be able to join the fight. It looks like you'll still have to wait for the scheduled "late September" date which is for the open beta. In the meantime, you can distract yourself with this new Resistance 2 site. Just don't click on "Beta Info" -- it'll just remind you that you can't get in.[Thanks Jonathan C.!]

  • Khaner dies for love in latest Resistance 2 viral video

Glenn Khaner, who was chosen for this week's injection on the Resistance 2 ARG website Project Abraham, dies a rather horrific death in the latest video. What is different about Khaner death is that it really tugs at your heartstrings; if you examine his dossier, it shows a transcribed conversation he had with Nathan Hale where Khaner admits he intentionally failed a placement exam in order to be sent to Alaska. Now, if you listen to Dr. Aklin's recordings, she alludes to a past relationship she had with Glenn where she "broke his heart" and talks about the guilt she currently feels as she is falling in love with Hale. It is at this point one realizes Khaner entered into Project Abraham just so he could be in the proximity of Alkin. Hale's induction video is now viewable and he is one of the candidates for injection. Currently, 76% of votes currently going to him. Who are you voting for this week? America First America Only's weekly newsletter uncovers more alleged secret government plans: the abandonment of US coastlines in the event of an invasion. Schematics of a fortress the government intents on sending people to in the case of an attack are presented to us. Accusations of brainwashing TV signals, as well a list of people who sent in tips last week can be seen on the back of the newsletter. Check it out here. [Thanks, Chunky and DeforMAKulizer!]

  • Surprise! No injections on Project Abraham this week

No injection took place on the Resistance 2 viral site, Project Abraham, this week. We are guessing the man who claimed he knew no fear met his match. Though no injection took place, Oster's video still contains violence and should be considered NSFW. Oster's dossier has also been updated to reflect his new status -- including a file number, which you can type into SrpaNet as "GET 938Stockmeyer773" to view a confrontation he had with our protagonist from the previous game. Dr. Alkin's inbox update included a Rorshchach inkblot test, along with a recommendation that Glenn Khaner be the next test subject.America First America Only apparently received some tips from those of us who "hacked" into SrpaNet and published pictures of Chimeras and Cloven in their news weekly. The second page suggests that these "aliens" are from a watery planet; can that planet possibly be Earth itself? Lastly, those of you who left your number with Project Abraham last week received a call. We missed ours, but thanks to NeoGAF, we have a partial recording of the phone call for you to listen to right here.[Thanks, DeforMAKulizer and Dave!]

  • PSP software support way down, recovery is likely

We knew software support for the PSP was relatively dire but this chart says it all. According to Siliconera, who've compiled a comprehensive analysis of publisher support, 2006 was the peak while 2007 saw a huge decline. The top six contributing publishers to the PSP's software library have all taken a considerable dip in scheduled titles, but Siliconera also points out that 2008 is actually starting to curve upward. Does that mean we're on the cusps of a healthy and steady recovery? Possibly, as games like Dissidia: Final Fantasy and LocoRoco 2 are on the way this year, and future titles like Resistance: Retribution and The 3rd Birthday are also on the way. The report is a very good read; we suggest you check out the whole thing at Siliconera for an in-depth look.

  • Channing Brown hurls on you in Resistance 2 ARG video

A rather gruesome video of Channing Brown's injection has been posted on projectabraham.com. The video is graphic and you need to enter your date of birth to view it. Word of advice: make sure you don't watch this during lunch. Like the last update, you can now vote for the next unfortunate soul to be experimented on -- Frank Gennaro, Kenneth Danby or Keith Oster. The upper left corner now contains a Rolodex card to fill out your name, phone number and e-mail. Also of note is this personality test and a tape recording of Dr. Aklin's sentiments. We also found some new documents on SrpaNet via NeoGAF. We won't give everything away, but here's a hint -- type in "SEC howardp:belinda" and it will log you into the terminal. If you manage to access the right files, they contain a "Controlled" seal and a number. Other files contain pictures of Chimera. One of the document numbers is "i2p8y0bynt2k" and you can head over to America First America Only and submit it into their tip box. The newsletter has also been updated. This is what we found so far after playing with it since last night, but if you guys find anything else, let us all know in the comments.[Thanks, Mad-elph and Chunky!]

A third Resistance ARG website, after projectabraham.com and getawarjob.com, has spawned up. The name is SrpaNet and it appears to be simulated remote access via Telnet to a database. Typing up commands such as "GET DISEASECONTROL" will load up an article titled Bahamas Quarantined. But it's all blurry and unreadable ... until you type in "RES" which will rid of the blur. Another little trick is to type "HELP" which gives you some commands to help you get started. See what you can figure out by clicking here. [Thanks, Farmer_Steve!] [Correction: There is actually a fourth Resistance 2 site, americafirstamericaonly.com. Thanks, Slacker!]

  • More ways to get into Resistance beta than Qore, Europe not excluded

Yes, it's true that Qore will give you access to the upcoming Resistance 2 beta. However, that's not the only way in, according to a recent post by Insomniac's James Stevenson. According to Stevenson, "the best way which will give you the earliest access to the beta will involve a pre-order program that should be announced soon." From the sounds of it, it will be similar to the Metal Gear Online beta test, where users were able to get in if they pre-ordered the game at GameStop. The beta will expand to "all territories" as well. Obviously, the point of a beta is to check the stability of the network worldwide. Further details on how European fans can get into the beta will be released later.[Thanks, Jay!]

    07.24.2008

PlayStation 3 owners who subscribe to Sony's "interactive magazine" Qore will be able to participate in Resistance 2's beta this September (via IGN). The details are sketchy at the moment -- we're going to guess you'll have to pay the $25 annual subscription fee and not just $3 for the related episode -- but the thought of 60-player team deathmatch has us frothing at the mouth. No beta details revealed yet for the Qore-less Europe.Update: Posting on myresistance.net, Insomniac Community Manager James Stevenson has clarified that "you will have many ways to get in" the beta. "The best way which will give you the earliest access to the beta will involve a pre-order program that should be announced soon," Stevenson writes. As for those of you residing outside of North America, don't worry, Insomniac has you covered ... somehow -- worldwide servers will be tested! [Thanks, Jay]

How many of you went to E3? Okay, by the show of hands, not too many. Thankfully, Insomniac's Ted Price brings E3 to you with this comprehensive video that chronicles everything they showed off at E3. You'll get to see how much progress has been made on the Resistance franchise since its debut as a launch title. It's interesting to see the game really start from where the first one ends, oh-so-seamlessly. Seeing the massive new enemies and environments in action will convince you (like it did us) that you should be very excited for this game.[Thanks, frankym!]

According to a recent PlayStation Underground e-mail, the next episode of Qore will feature access to the upcoming Resistance 2 multiplayer beta. Online is one of the key selling points of this hotly anticipated PS3 exclusive, with online battles that support up to 60 (!) players.Let's just hope that the beta available through Qore will arrive on a more timely manner than it has for SOCOM Confrontation (as of this writing, the SOCOM beta is still not available for those that purchased the first episode of Qore). Episode 3 of Qore will be available on August 7th. Update: The beta will be made available in September. Those that buy Episode 3, hold on to your download![Thanks, Brandon S.!]%Gallery-14695%

It looks like the Resistance 2 ARG (alternate reality game) should be taken quite seriously. An email from getawarjob.com (attached, after the break) sends interested users to yet another site: America First, America Only. The site features some heavy conspiracy theories about the now-familiar "Project Abraham." Each article featured on this printing press can be enlarged, and will undoubtedly give hints to the next step of this massive ARG.[Thanks, Kenton for the tip. Thanks, Zach for the e-mail.]

The Project Abraham countdown has ended, and we haven't discovered an open beta quite yet. (Good job, Nick. You were right on the money!) There are, however, new videos for your perusal, many of which are quite disturbing. Looks like the tone of Resistance 2 will be rather dark, if this viral site is any indication. One of the creepier aspects of the site is the community's ability to vote on who will get injected next. Chances are, no matter who you vote for, the results will be quite ... disastrous. (Oh, and guess who else is on the list?)[Thanks, Jonathan C. & raj!]

  • Confirmed: Resistance Retribution is awesome

PSP may not have had an overwhelming amount of surprises at E3 this year, but one announcement can make up for an otherwise tame conference. Resistance Retribution is on its way to becoming one of the best games on PSP, bar none.Simply listing all of Resistance's features doesn't convey the simple fact that Resistance Retribution is a lot of fun. Being able to switch to an auto-target and manual aiming mode on the fly is what really makes Resistance as playable as it is. It may seem strange at first, but pressing the Left button on the D-Pad to toggle between manual and auto aim comes rather easily. The proximity of the Left button in relation to the L shoulder button makes it an intuitive change. We were able to take cover, pop out and take out a few enemies, and then aim at a few snipers afar without struggling at all. Once again, Bend has crafted a control scheme that takes PSP's limitations into consideration.%Gallery-27814%

  • Joystiq E3 hands-on: Resistance Retribution

Can Sony Bend do no wrong? Resistance: Retribution was easily the best PSP game I saw in Sony's E3 2008 room, and arguably better than any PS3 game there as well (I didn't play all of them). Retribution is essentially "Syphon Filter PSP, Part 3," and players of that handheld franchise will instantly recognize visual and structural similarities. There are, of course, numerous designs that link this new game to Insomniac's Resistance games, despite the obvious perspective change (Retribution is third-person!). PSP has a difficult time handling the demands of modern action titles. The lack of a second analog nub cripples most games that dare follow the trajectory of similar console-based efforts. Luckily, Bend has had two previous "trials" to get it right, and this time the gang nailed it. While the developer guiding my tour described the demo as a "before pre-alpha" build, I was amazed by the game's playability. At the core of Retribution's gameplay is what Bend's calling the "aim assist box." %Gallery-27792%

By now, I am sure you've heard that the Wrath of the Lich King Beta is going live and the patch notes are up. There's a rather extensive section devoted to Hunters on this iteration. We have a few more insights into the pet talent trees that were announced at the Worldwide Invitational, as well as a few changes to existing talents and a nice Steady Shot buff.

    07.17.2008

Insomniac carved out its fourth "C" behind closed doors at E3 this week: Community. (Can you name the other three?) Bungie has put the pressure on other FPS developers to serve their dedicated player base, and Insomniac hopes to respond by relaunching myresistance.net alongside Resistance 2 this fall.We were shown some concept slides of the new site design, beginning with a landing page with links to three distinct experiences. To the left was an entryway into the community pages, in the center was "game info," and to the right was "chronicles" (a section of the site that ties the franchise together with content like a timeline system). The landing page will be customizable to some extent. We saw a mock "ticker," which could run along the top of the page displaying various Resistance related feeds (news, developer updates, friends activity, etc.). But what happens when we jump into the community portal?

  • Dr. Aklin will do her duty in Resistance 2 ARG video

    07.17.2008

A third viral video for Resistance 2 featuring Dr. Alkin has popped up on projectabraham.com. This time we have Cassandra overlooking the patient from the first video, wondering if she could have done anything else to save him. Colonel Grand Thompson then walks in, requesting that she provides a "recommendation" on the next test subject. Seeing what happened to the first guy, Aklin refuses but Thompson reminds her she must do her duty. Alkin refutes the order by saying she isn't a soldier but a psychologist. The Colonel leaves without saying another word. The blackout section of the website also has an update in the form of a second letter. It appears to be a follow-up letter after the incident in the video. Alkin's duties are outlined: she is to monitor subjects who are injected with a serum -- the serum appears to be a virus that causes all sorts of psychological problems. Every week three candidates are sent to her and she must decide which subject is best suited for experimentation. Any guesses? Are they testing out a Chimera vaccine? Maybe we'll find more next week; the countdown on the website ends on July 22nd, 12 noon PST.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Click for high-resolution image. Insomniac is really a marvel. The developer is set to release its fourth PS3 game later this year (including Ratchet & Clank PSN), and it doesn't look like things are going to slow down for PS3's most prolific team. The upcoming Resistance 2 looks absolutely stunning, with beautiful vistas and gruesome character designs that scream "please shoot me."Take a closer look at some of the game's villains and weapons by peering into this Resistance 2 concept art. Then, marvel at how well these concepts are executed in these brand new screenshots.
