Raleigh, NC had better stock up on Ambien. GameDaily reports that Burbank, CA based Insomniac Games – creator of Resistance and Ratchet & Clank – plans to have a North Carolina office open for business by January 2009. Insomniac art director Chad Dezern will head the studio, with gameplay lead Shaun McCabe taking on the role of production director. Both Insomniac veterans will head east once development wraps on Resistance 2.The studio, situated in the same "Research Triangle" area of Raleigh-Durham as Gears of War developer Epic Games (no peeking, guys!) will be home to roughly 30 new Insomniacs working on current and all-new franchises for PS3. In his interview with GameDaily, Insomniac president Ted Price points out that a team of 30 should be just the right size for creating a big-time PS3 title using the company's refined tools and technology. PS3 fans should be (rightfully) excited by the prospect of Insomniac likely bringing another all-new franchise to the system by way of the new studio, as the Burbank home base continues to develop future Ratchet and Resistance installments.

Click for high-resolution image. Insomniac's Resistance 2 looks mighty swell, don't it? These three new shots showcase some stunning new environments, set in the American heartland. Somehow, the artists at Insomniac have create a serene setting that doesn't feel quite right; an aura of creepiness haunts over these almost-peaceful scene.Maybe it's because of that impending Chimera attack. Aliens blowing things up in the forest -- we loved it in Half-Life 2: Episode Two and we'll like it again in Resistance 2. Videos have been removed, at Sony's request. "This was an internal video to show work in progress and was not ready for distribution." We will post new media when it is available. Once again, footage from today's PlayStation Day conference has been making its way through the internet. With the delay of Killzone 2, it's clear that there's one big FPS game to focus on PS3 this holiday season: Resistance 2. Forgive the low-quality footage, but remember: you'll see high-def versions of these trailers soon enough.

Update: Videos for Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 have been removed at Sony's request. "This was an internal video to show work in progress and was not ready for distribution." We will post new media when it is available. If you were furiously pounding F5 to follow along with PS3 Fanboy's live coverage of PlayStation Day 2008, you probably felt a little pang of sadness as our man, Jem Alexander, got to see some new footage from Mirror's Edge, Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 while you had to make do with reading his text second-hand.Now, you can make amends and see the videos directly from the show for yourself. Oh, and you should know that the audio on the Killzone clip seems to become a little crazy at the end, but we're hoping you still get the idea. You can find Resistance Mirror's Edge after the break right here.

We were jazzed to see our tipbox lined with messages heralding the release of this "Exclusive Debut Teaser" for the follow-up to the PS3's inaugural first person shooter, Resistance: Fall of Man. However, we must say that after watching this sneak peek, we're left a bit unsatisfied. Don't get us wrong, the twenty seconds-worth of two in-game cinematics flipped a Pavlovian switch in our brains, leaving us salivating for the further adventures of Nathan Hale, but we were left confused by the last few seconds -- is this a trailer for the game; or for the June 13 episode of GameTrailers TV, and its "World Exclusive Gameplay Premiere" for Resistance 2? You be the judge.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Most of us here at PS3 Fanboy are quite excited about Resistance 2; however, perhaps we're not as big Insomniacs as all you readers who stayed up watching the special midnight reveal of this teaser trailer. You see what this blogger just did there? While we relished much-needed sleep, many of you have already seen it. But, for all who missed it and are waking up to a beautiful Saturday morn at nearly noon, now's your chance to check it out -- with crusty eyes and all.Our thoughts on the teaser you ask? As far as looks go, it's quite evident that R2 is going to blow the first Resistance right out the water. 19 hours to live Mr. Hale? Interesting. But a June 13 gameplay premiere reveal? Perhaps not the best time, especially with such a huge game coming out the day before ... and the fact it's Friday the 13th![Thanks Leigh B. and everyone who sent this in!]

  • Own a piece of fake history by bidding on this Chimera skull

Got two and a half grand burning a hole in your pocket and an insatiable love for all things Resistance? Then this Ebay Live auction is for you. A replica of the skull on the game's boxart is up for grabs for those of you wealthy (and geeky) enough. The skull was used in an early TV advert for the game.Auction opens on March 28th at 11am PDT, for those who are interested in bidding (or who, like us, are intrigued to see how much it sells for). As huge fans of Resistance as we are and as cool as this item would be to have floating around the office, $2.5k is a little too rich for our blood. [Thanks Kjetil]

Insider Trader is your inside line on making, selling, buying and using player-made products. While alchemy is certainly not the most flashy or popular profession out there, alchemists are an integral part of the game, and any guild worth its salt has at least one, preferably several, working to supply guildmates and fill the guild bank with stacks of consumables and transmuted items. This week's leveling guide will feature the usual cheapest route, and the most useful, to 375 for solos and casuals. For those of you who will be working for your guild (and hopefully are also being financed, or supported by herbalists), we'll show you how to reach 375 by making the most useful items. They might cost more, but your guild will be requiring them anyway, so you might as well get your skill points that way, rather than making stacks of items you won't be using.

Insomniac's darling FPS is returning later this year. Expect it to be far more involving than the previous effort. Insomniac has mastered the PS3 tech, and will churn out some jaw-dropping visuals and some truly realistic animation. Watch this motion capture video, being used in Insomniac's upcoming FPS. It's silly, yes -- but it's the kind of stuff that needs to be done when making a game. Make sure you watch it in HD, to appreciate everything that's happening across all six of these cameras.

  • Insomniac considering new IPs, Ratchet sells a million

In an interview with MTV's Multiplayer, Insomniac Games president Ted Price discusses development at the company going into the PS3 era. He says that Ratchet and Clank Future was the "best production experience" after the "hell" of putting together Resistance, elaborating that working with the new PS3 tech and a genre the company hadn't worked in for 10 years was tough. Price confesses that Ratchet recently hit the million sold mark globally, but says the game has a "long tail." He also allays fears that Insomniac will become a Ratchet and Resistance mill, "We'll continue to produce new IP, there's no question about that." As for Resistance 2, players can expect deeper storytelling this time around and a better connection with ... boy, what was his name again?Actually, the last part of the interview is all about Resistance 2. Price reiterates that the 60 player arenas are going to happen and they've been playing them internally, along with the eight-player co-op. Looks like it's going to be showdown between Killzone 2 and Resistance at the end of '08 on PS3.MTV Multiplayer and Ted Price: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

  • Resistance on PSP is 'possible' says Insomniac

    by
    Nick Doerr

    03.06.2008

Ted Price, man behind the curtain at Insomniac Games, recently talked with MTV Multiplayer at the DICE summit in regards to ... well, a lot of things. We're going to focus on one of those things: bringing Resistance to the PSP. It's not like they're trying to port the PS3 title over to the PSP, though -- Price uses Killzone as an example, noting how Liberation wasn't a first-person shooter like its parent title, but was a fantastic game all its own. While the possibility is there, we have no idea if Insomniac will follow through with this idea and how different a PSP Resistance would be relative to the original FPS. What sort of crazy genre do you think could work? Maybe the Chimera want to battle mankind in a series of physical activities to prove who are the superior athletes. Some sort of olympics with a snappy title. Who knows. It worked pretty well for Sega and Nintendo![via PSPSPS]

  • Insomniac still interested in new IPs

    03.05.2008

Not content with creating two million selling franchises in quick succession, Insomniac's president, Ted Price, isn't ruling out any new IPs coming along in the future. When asked about their plans to keep alternating between Resistance and Ratchet in the years to come by MTV's Stephen Totilo, Price responded by saying that Insomniac will "continue to produce new IP, there's no question about that. So that means that pattern won't necessarily continue as you stated."Considering how different Ratchet & Clank and Resistance are, our mind boggles at what else Insomniac have in mind. Price also notes that Insomniac were experiencing consumer fatigue while they were developing a new Ratchet game every year. Now they have two-year cycles, still with one game releasing per year, with multiple franchises. We agree that this keeps the series' fresh and, with Price teasing about new IPs appearing in the future, we're intrigued to see what they're going to come up with next. Having said that, let's keep focused on Resistance 2 for now, shall we? We haven't even seen any gameplay footage yet!

  • Sony reveals Home integration for Resistance, Uncharted, Warhawk

Worried that game integration with Playstation Home will just be trophies, trailers and t-shirts? Well, so were we, actually. Luckily, Kotaku's learned some interesting details about the Home integration of Warhawk, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and Resistance: Fall of Man. Turns out its way cooler than we thought. Warhawk will reportedly allow up to eight players to meet in a "war room" prior to a match, mapping out strategies on "sand table" replicas of each level. Once they're ready to go, players can jump right into an online Warhawk match from the Home interface. A nice touch, indeed. Resistance and Uncharted, meanwhile, will give Home users access to full unpopulated levels from the games, allowing players to casually walk through battlefields with their Home avatars. In addition to this killer feature, Resistance will allow players to explore unseen portions of the game, and locate radio transmissions that further explain the storyline. Uncharted will feature a Contra-style 2D shooter that launches from Home. Consider us floored. We can't wait to see these features in action. • Resistance 2 artwork is tentacle-tastic

You might have seen the awesome screenshots for Resistance 2, but you might not have seen the concept art and character renders that went into making such eye-popping visuals. While new and gorgeous, much of the artwork reveals little beyond what we already know. The American flags in some of the paintings point to the already revealed USA setting, and we've seen those grotesque Chimera enemies before. However, some concept artworks do raise questions -- like that tentacle creature in the picture above. What is that, a new boss perhaps? In any case, it's nice of Insomniac to drop us little nuggets here and there. They're doing a good job in keeping us interested in this game. They've certainly got us thinking about this one, as it looks to be a step above the first Resistance in every respect.[Via NeoGAF]

  • PS3 Fanboy presents: Insomniac music video, director's commentary

Did you watch the Insomniac recruitment video? Of course you did. (Download a higher-res version here.) Here's an exclusive for PS3 Fanboy readers. Ryan Schneider from Insomniac joins us to give a few behind-the-scenes commentary for the video. Find out a few new tidbits about the development team and get a few more hints about this Resistance 2 game they have going on. What was the inspiration for creating a recruitment music video?Well, when you go to things like GDC, everybody has their typical video. In general, everyone has their recruitment video – it's very "been there, done that." We just wanted to do something different. We wanted to create a video that captures who we really are and this video does. It shows that we take our games very seriously but not ourselves. %Gallery-14695%

  • GDC08: Insomniac video hiring call hints at Resistance 2

While this new video hiring call from Insomniac Games showcases the company's kooky side, it also holds a lot of hidden messages pertaining to the upcoming PS3-exclusive Resistance 2. The video is basically a guided tour through Insomniac's Burbank office, and this happens all to the tune of a campy rock ballad. Throughout the video, employees join in on the singing, and in their merriment, they forget that they have secret information on their computer screens. We saw two such screens; one read "twelve new Chimeran enemies" and the other had "0708". The former is quite obvious, but what does "0708" mean? A release date is highly unlikely because we know the game is due out in Autumn. The numbers could be referring to a demo date perhaps?Of course, our speculations could be wrong. It's also possible that there are more Easter eggs hidden in the video, and we just happened to miss a key piece to the puzzle. Maybe you can find even more than we did, so go watch the video already.[Thanks Platano!]

  • PS3 budget lineup heading to Japan, 'likely' Europe

Savior of stingy spenders and bane of box art, the budget lineup, is set to incorporate several PlayStation 3 titles in Japan next month. IGN reports that the official "PlayStation 3 the Best" branding will highlight familiar titles at friendlier prices, with Resistance: Fall of Man, FolksSoul (aka Folklore), Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Gundam: Target in Sight, and Ridge Racer 7 pinching the first pennies -- or, uh, yanking the first yen. The "Best" games will sell for ¥3,800 ($36), which represents a saving of roughly ¥2,200 ($21) for Sony-published games and ¥3,200 ($30) for third-party titles. On the other side of the ocean, Sony told GamesIndustry.biz that a similar "Platinum" range of budget games would likely arrive in Europe. "We have introduced a Platinum range of best-selling titles for all of our platforms to date, and it is likely that we will do so in the future for PS3," said a spokesman, noting that the timing and lineup had yet to be finalized. We'll let you know what Sony America has to say about a budget lineup as soon as they accept our collect call. Read -- "PlayStation 3 the Best" for Japan Read -- "Platinum" for Europe

Sega's German division wants you to think that playing Ghost Squad on Wii will be like the PS3 award-winning shooter, Resistance: Fall of Man. With Wii Zapper in hand, you'll take down hordes of criminals and terrorists in this rail shooter. Sure, it's not a FPS, nor is it about a sci-fi flavored WWII, nor does it even have aliens. But trust Sega. It's just as good as Resistance. They swear.[Via NeoGAF]

No one is surprised by the announcement of Resistance 2. As the PS3's best selling game, it was simply inevitable. This new interview with Insomniac's Ted Price reveals the team's new direction for the game. Unfortunately, there isn't new footage of the game in action, but he does talk about their focus on networking and what players can experience from a team that's much more experienced on the hardware. Bosses over 100 feet tall are promised. WWII meets Shadow of the Colossus meets aliens. What's not to love?[Thanks, Chris!]

A trademark has been filed by Sony Computer Entertainment of America for the name Resistance 2. Although this writer initially assumed SCEA was prepping an educational game on introductory circuitry, the rest of the Joystiq staff quickly reminded him of the well-received Resistance: Fall of Man that launched with the PlayStation 3. Wow, we did not see this coming -- it's a holiday miracle! Is Sony laying groundwork for a sequel? Do they really think it financially wise to make a sequel to one of the best, most critically-acclaimed titles on the PS3? (Answer: probably.) Perhaps they're just protecting the name before someone else claims the title for Resistance 2: Fall of Hen, which is in fact a sequel to the 2000 film Chicken Run and a direct competitor to the equally punful, and equally fictional, Deers of War. (Answer: No, they're not.)No formal announcement has been made. According to the game's lore, Chimeran forces have invaded all of Europe, giving developer Insomniac a vast number of prestigious churches to anger.[Via Trademork, PS3FB]
