  • Finally: Snoop Dogg is rolling onto Rock Band

With so much content in Rock Band D-L-C, it's kinda hard finding Snoop D-O-double-G. But according to a release from MTV, that's about to become a lot easier as the Doggfather brings his trademark flow to MTV's music game (alongside a few other ventures with the music giant). We love Snoop Dogg's music as much as the three-time winners of the "Least Urban Blogging Team" award can, but is this really a good fit for Rock Band? Do you commenters have any suggestions for Snoop tracks that you'd want to rock to? And will you be singing the censored on-screen version or spitting the original, raunchy fire? [Via Giant Bomb]

  • Rock Band Wiikly: Rush's Moving Pictures album

    02.09.2009

Rush's Moving Pictures album is this week's regurgitated Rock Band content for the Wii. Well, that's not exactly accurate, as Wii rockers will have to pay $2 for each track, rather than pay $11 for the whole package, like Xbox 360 and PS3 owners. Rush - Moving Pictures (200 Wii points apiece) "Tom Sawyer" "Red Barchetta" "YYZ" "Limelight" "The Camera Eye" "Witch Hunt" "Vital Signs" Videos for the tracks can be found after the break. We're still waiting to hear when "new" Rock Band Weekly tracks will become available for Wii, but last we heard, it should still be sometime this month.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Axl Rose stated that "Chinese Democracy" was coming February 28 to Rock Band, but that information has since been updated to a "spring" release. What was also unclear -- you know, given the source -- was whether Mr. Rose was talking about Chinese Democracy the song or the full album. We've followed up with Harmonix and it confirmed that the full Chinese Democracy album will be available as Rock Band DLC this spring, with no word on price. Now "Shackler's Revenge" won't be lonely anymore and it'll have its other CD playmates.[Thanks, Travis]

Don't think of them as leftovers! Think of these Rock Band DLC oldies as freeze-dried goodies, ready to be served up for the Wii. We still don't see a pattern to how these track selections are being made, but we'll ask Harmonix.Individual Tracks (200 Wii points apiece) "Hanging on the Telephone" - Blondie "Dirty Little Secret" - All American Rejects "Hitch A Ride" - Boston "Peace Of Mind" - Boston "Smokin" - Boston "Something About You" - Boston Although "Rock Band Wiikly" could very well be with us until mid-2010, the "new" Rock Band Weekly tracks should become available for Wii sometime this month.[Thanks, Riley]

For next week's Rock Band offerings, Harmonix is doling out a quintet of five classic rock songs from the likes of Thin Lizzy, Pat Benatar and The Pretenders. And hey, if you're too young to know who any of these people are, there are a couple of Nikko songs for ya (no relation to Nico of Velvet Underground fame), from the movie Spectacular!Thin Lizzy 3-Pack (440 / $5.49) "Boys are Back in Town (live)" (160 / $2) "Cowboy Song (live)" (160 / $2) "Jailbreak (live)" (160 / $2) Individual Songs "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" - Pat Benatar (160 / $2) "Precious" - The Pretenders (160 / $2) "Don't Tell Me" - Nikko (80 / $1) "Break My Heart" - Nikko (80 / $1) Videos for these songs can be found after the break. All tracks are masters and will be available for download next Tuesday and Thursday for Xbox 360 and PS3, respectively.

  • Billboard: Rock Band to have 'as many as 5000' tracks available this year

    01.28.2009

MTV expects Rock Band to activate overdrive this year and have over 5,000 songs available for play, reports Billboard. Developer Harmonix hit its goal of having over 500 songs, spread across discs and DLC, on the music platform by the end of last year. Although we have no reason to doubt Harmonix's ability to provide content, the math dictates that an average of over 90 songs would need to release every week for the rest of 2009. Even if that figure is mitigated by special discs (like AC/DC) or Rock Band 3 (unlikely), the developer has its work cut out. We've contacted Harmonix to find out if its publisher is being realistic.Update: Full Harmonix statement after the break.[Via GameDaily]

Another week, another bundle of Rock Band DLC oldies for the Wii, which according to the press release should be available now.Individual Tracks (200 Wii points apiece) "Attack" - 30 Seconds to Mars "Gimme Three Steps" - Lynrd Skynrd "Live Forever" - Oasis "Just What I needed" - The Cars "Siva" - Smashing Pumpkins "Tell Me Baby" - Red Hot Chili Peppers Fun fact: the Rock Band series has about 559 songs. At this point, Wii owners have access to 212 of them, leaving 347 songs to go. At 6 songs per week -- not counting any future DLC -- we should see Wii owners catch up to everyone else some time before mid-2010.

Fun fact of the day: Steve Miller Band's "Space Cowboy" and "The Joker" are not the same song, but "Joker" is often referred to by both names because of its first line, "Some people call me the Space Cowboy..." Just keep that in mind as you're shopping for Rock Band DLC next week.Steve Miller Band 3-Pack (440 / $5.49) "Space Cowboy" (160 / $2) "Take the Money and Run" (160 / $2) "The Joker" (160 / $2) Individual songs "I Stand Alone" - Godsmack (160 / $2) "Feed the Tree" - Belly (160 / $2) "Wind Me Up" - Ghost Hounds (160 / $2) "Typical" - Mute Math (160 / $2) "War Zone" - Rob Zombie (160 / $2) Videos for these songs can be found after the break (except for "Wind Me Up," which we couldn't find -- sorry, folks!). The DLC content for Wii's Music Store should be up later today, according to Harmonix's Sean Baptiste.

Next week's Rock Band DLC is quite the treat, as we'll finally get to play the song from one of the most iconic music videos of all time. Sure, "Are You Gonna Go My Way" is a fine tune, but that video ... wow! (See for yourself after the break.) Now, remember, everyone in the band has to have really big hair (or a wig): dreads, fro, curly puff. Check out videos for next week's songs after the break.Lenny Kravitz 4 Song Pack (560 / $7) "Are You Gonna Go My Way" (160 / $2) "Freedom Train" (160 / $2) "Let Love Rule" (160 / $2) "Mr. Cab Driver" (160 / $2) Individual songs "Megasus" - Megasus (80 / $1) "Entangled" - Honest Bob and the Factory-to-Dealer Incentives (80 / $1) All tracks are masters. • CES 2009: Harmonix interested in music and RB track combo sales

    by

    01.09.2009

Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos mentioned at CES that he thinks it makes sense to offer up digital versions of songs with Rock Band tracks in a single offering. Ars Technica was there when Rigopulos expressed that it's something the company is interested in, but the CEO didn't expound exactly how it might happen.Considering Harmonix is owned by MTV, it's not really a stretch to see how partnerships could be made for such a combo deal to happen, but Rigopulos does believe it would "change the tenor" of the developer's relationship with record labels. As long as Rock Band tracks continue being about $2 and the digital songs cost an extra buck (if you want to purchase it), the whole thing sounds like a reasonable deal.

  • PSA: Rock Band 2 SD card not required for Wii DLC

    01.08.2009

We're sure that most of our readers will already know this, but this is for our more casual audience. Rock Band DLC for the Wii is quite exciting, but let's be clear that nobody needs to buy the recently announced $13 Rock Band 2 SD card for it to work. The Wii should support any brand of SD card up to 2GB (beyond 2GB we get into murky tech territory).A quick search on Amazon finds that most 2GB SD cards can be purchased for under $10. For those who just can't live without the branding on this SD card (which you'll never see once it's inside the console), it'll be available this spring. Also, this PSA extends to those outrageously priced Wii-branded SD cards as well.

As CMT foretold, Roy Orbison tracks will be available as Rock Band DLC. Sadly, "I Drove All Night" isn't one of the songs, but there's still plenty of tracks to croon to while wearing giant black-rimmed glasses.Roy Orbison Pack (800 / $10) "Claudette" (160 / $2) "In Dreams" (160 / $2) "Mean Woman Blues" (160 / $2) "Oh, Pretty Woman" (160 / $2) "Ooby Dooby" (160 / $2) "You Got It" (160 / $2) All tracks are masters and videos can be found after the break. The Xbox 360 will have the songs available for download Tuesday, January 6. The PS3 will receive them a week later on January 15, due to the PSN's holiday break. There's currently no word about when the two consoles will sync up again, but we've contacted Sony and HMX to find out.

An "exclusive" from Geoff Keighley, who likely read that line from a teleprompter while presenting live from the Spike VGAs: Pearl Jam's "Ten" album is coming as a Rock Band downloadable album in March. That should be just enough time for you to find the appropriate amount of flannel to wear while you play.

    12.09.2008

Following up on last week's discounted Legendary Map Pack for Halo 3, Major Nelson recently announced the latest Xbox Live Marketplace "Holiday Deal of the Week". For the next seven days, you can pick up one of the best pieces of Rock Band DLC to drop this year (in our most humble, Grohl-worshiping opinion) on the cheap. The full Foo Fighters album, The Colour and the Shape, is on sale for 1200 ($15), a discount of 400 ($5).Asian Xbox Live territories have their own unique discounts this week -- Japan's popular rhythm title The iDOLM@STER: Live For You knocked a few points off the price of one of its songs, while Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan can pick up the Guitar Hero III Foo Fighters Track Pack for 375. It's a global Foo-nomenon!
