  • McCain and Obama join forces for Saints Row 2 trailer

Things have been fairly aggressive between the two presidential nominees as of late, perhaps largely due to a certain comment involving a farm animal and mouth-based cosmetics. That's why we were so glad to see them squash the beef in a recent Saints Row 2 advertisement (posted after the break), combining forces to wreak havoc across Stilwater (much to the chagrin of their respective campaign staffs, we imagine). We're also glad to see that the character customization in THQ and Volition's crime-riddled sandbox is so versatile. We've already begun planning our own presidential nominee superteams for when the game comes out -- we've always wondered what Roosevelt and Dewey would look like in a gang war.

No, not really. Let's just get that out of the way. That said, there are obvious facsimiles of the two major United States presidential candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain, featured in this co-op trailer for Saints Row 2. For the record, there are also cops and robbers, rednecks and tree huggers, and let's not forget pirates and ninjas. Silly pairings aside, the video serves to highlight the drop in / drop out online co-op, which can be carried through the entire single player campaign. Anyone with a copy of Crackdown knows that open world destruction is more fun with a friend. Cooperative open world destruction complete with crazily customizable characters? That's even better.Strangely absent from the video: pimps teaming up with whores.

This latest Saints Row 2 trailer is suppose to highlight their co-op gameplay mechanics, but who's going to notice that when you have the most awesome combination of McCain and Obama lookalikes walking side-by-side together with a firearm in their hand? We like it better when Saints Row 2 takes the amusing route, rather than trying to take that other sandbox title head-on. The game is coming out October 14th. We don't wanna spoil too much for you, so take a gander at the trailer, after the jump:[Via MaxConsole]

Is there anyone as delightfully insane as Gary Busey? We submit that there is not. Mr. Busey has returned for another round of Saints Row 2 videos, and we're pleased to report that they are as crazy as the last batch. The video above begins, quite eloquently we think, with the words "Let's be honest, who hasn't wanted to kill someone with a garden gnome." Who indeed, Uncle Gary, who indeed.Find two more videos (one of them is NSFW, by the way) after the break.

Were you recently diagnosed with a severe case of sanity? We've got your physician-approved prescription posted after the break -- a triple dose of advertisements for Saints Row 2, with commentary provided by esteemed Shakespearian thespian, Gary Busey. We highly doubt that Busey was provided with a script in these videos -- when the Silver Bullet star asks, "Who hasn't wanted to kill someone with a garden gnome," he's probably not reading from a script. His addled mind ponders that very question two or three times a day. If you're confident you can look into the heart of lunacy and come out unaffected, check the ads out after the jump. Even if you don't care about the game, we're sure you'll enjoy trying to pinpoint the moment Busey stops promoting the game, and starts having honest-to-god Vietnam flashbacks (video NSFW).

THQ has revealed to Europe the Saint's Row 2 Collector's Edition bundle, which appears to come with the game, some posters, a 1GB USB stick in the shape of a bullet and some kind of ... gun. Eurogamer explains that "the box is shaped like a gun," but we can't tell from the picture above if the gun comes out of its casing, or if it's molded to the box. The publisher also tells the site this special edition is only for Xbox 360. We're not exactly sure about the SR2 Collector's Edition for North America, so we'll have to wait and see if THQ announces this same bundle for the region. Sadly, nothing involving porn star and "special producer" Tera Patrick will be included in the box. The boys and girls of Saints Row 2 are expected to shoot up the streets of Stilwater in October.

  • More gang violence in Saints Row 2 trailer

Download to PSP It's been a while since we checked in on Saints Row 2. It made a splash earlier when it compared itself to Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV, promising over-the-top crass humor which the somewhat emo Liberty City game failed to offer this time around. But, it looks like Saints Row 2 isn't just all about potty humor -- it looks like there's going to be a story in this one too, continuing the gang violence featured in the original. For some reason, we liked it more when it just trying to be funny.%Gallery-30689%

A new trailer has been released showcasing one of the new gangs in Saints Row 2, the Ronin. Hailing from the Far East, the Ronin have a penchant for flashy jackets and swords. Honestly, if people can walk around in broad daylight with swords on their backs, we'd say that the game's city of Stillwater is in bad shape. It looks like the Saints have their work cut out for them as well if all the action in the trailer is any indication. Check out the trailer after the break (NSFW thanks to some language and some pretty nasty violence).

  • Saints Row 2 controversy concerns, graphics keeping it off Wii

Saints Row 2 producer Dan Sutton tells CVG that the game isn't coming to the Wii over controversy and graphical concerns. He explains that implementing Wii controls for "chainsaws, satchel charges, stuff like that" in the game might risk the title running into Manhunt 2-style controversy. That's a bad thing? Apparently, SR2's developer, Volition, isn't totally run by the marketing department. Sutton also explains that SR2 won't be making it to Nintendo's waggle-enriched juggernaut because Volition is "about pushing really good graphics" -- he believes the Wii feels like an older console. Ouch, at least he didn't mention duct tape.

You may have heard that Tera Patrick -- do not Google her name at work! -- was "hired" as a "special" "producer" on Saints Row 2. It looks like we now have an idea of what she'll be "contributing" to the game's development: developer diaries. The first dev diary is really just a tease of future Tera Patrick dev diaries. She gabs about the game's features and takes off her clothes, all with the kind of forced sexiness that only a porn star can deliver. We miss Gary Busey. • THQ games joining GameTap this summer

Gaming buffet GameTap just announced that THQ- and ValuSoft-published titles will begin finding their way onto the service starting this summer. Notable titles include: Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War and expansions Company of Heroes Red Faction Supreme Commander Saints Row 2 Puzzle Quest S.T.A.L.K.E.R. It's nice to see relatively new titles like Supreme Commander make the list. We're also curious to find out if Saints Row 2 releases on the service the same day as retail, similar to GameTap's deal with Codemasters. The THQ agreement is apparently a "long-term partnership" and some titles will also be made available on GameTap's free ad-supported service. This THQ announcement comes only a few months after Interplay returned and Take-Two committed to the service.

Even though Saints Row 2 and GTAIV are very different, Saints Row 2 isn't totally forgoing some sort of fleshed out storyline. Per the latest Saints Row teaser trailer, we're treated to a taste of what sort of story Saints Row 2 will follow, a glimpse at the characters involved and (of course) some in-game footage. It's a pretty interesting trailer at that. What's our favorite one liner you ask? "You definitely need a stripper pole in this b*tch" ... now that's classic Saints Row.

  • Prepare for the 'second coming' in Saints Row 2

Despite what the previous trailer might tell you, Saints Row 2 isn't all fun and games. In this trailer titled Saints Gang, the focus is on the story. After being in a coma, the unnamed protagonist breaks out of jail with the help of another inmate, and promptly rescues Johnny Gat, the Chinese-American lieutenant of the Saints gang, from the brink of the electric chair. Our main character then learns another gang called the Brotherhood has taken over in Stilwater and he is determined to gather forces to return for a "second coming." Featuring katana swords, strippers, a S.W.A.T. team and a gun-to-the-head confrontation with former Saints leader Julius Little, this looks to be as grand a saga as a certain other sandbox game. Despite a previously confirmed release date of almost two months earlier, look for Saints Row 2 instead on October 14th. [via Shacknews -- thanks, Leigh B.!]

  • Saint's Row 2 'a very differentiated product'

This is precisely why we're not in video game marketing. If we were trying to get our open-ended gangster romp into the hands of millions, we'd be sure to have "Just like Grand Theft Auto IV!" emblazoned across not only the game's cover, but all of its magazine ads, television commercials and special edition lunch boxes. Of course, the major failure in our marketing strategy would be in its honesty -- our game, "Radical Car Nicking," really would just be Grand Theft Auto with slightly murkier textures. That's why we're not in game design either, but we sure are good at copying and pasting quotes from THQ CEO, Brian Farrell! Like this one (via Next-Gen), from an investor meeting held on Wednesday in Chicago, where he said, "We think that we have a very differentiated product with Saints Row 2." Farrell acknowledged Rockstar's opus as "the leader in the genre," but noted that Volition's bandanna-wearing blockbuster would go in a different creative direction with "silly, over-the-top gameplay." We've certainly seen shades of that in the most recent Saint's Row 2 trailer, what with the encouragement of public streaking and outrageous misuse of sewage. It's out -- and very differentiated -- this October.

  • Saints Row 2 promises a more lighthearted affair than GTA

Though the teaser trailer left us wondering why THQ even bothered, we were amused at their attempt to distinguish themselves in the eyes of gamers from another franchise in their other trailer. This attempt continues with investors -- THQ's CEO, Brian Farrell indicates that Saints Row 2 is "a very differentiated product in this open-world genre." in an investor's meeting for Chicago-based investment firm William Blair & Company. Farrell also implied that he was relieved GTA4 is going in a more epic direction while Saints Row 2 will involve more "tongue-in-cheek ... silly, over-the-top gameplay." Additionally, Farrell hinted at other areas where it will try and trump GTA4: DLC, "a larger, richer environment," combat system and a two-player mode. We like how THQ is taking the series in a more humorous and slapstick direction, but we'll wait to make any final judgments until see the final product when Saints Row 2 is released on October 12th.

  • THQ: Saints Row 2 and GTAIV are 'very different'

    by

    06.19.2008

Saints Row 2 will be releasing on August 26th October 14th and THQ wants everyone to know that it isn't just a GTAIV clone, that Saints is its own creation and is an experience "totally different" than what Rockstar offers. Or so says THQ CEO Brian Farrell who, during a recent conference call, admitted that "we're always concerned about GTA as a competitor" but mentioned that with Saints Row 2 they "have a very differentiated product in this open-world genre" that has more "tongue-in-cheek ... silly, over-the-top gameplay." And we have no reason to doubt Mr. Farrell. We like Saints Row for what it is, not trying to be overly serious and focusing more on the gameplay shenanigans rather than a serious, deep storyline. Heck, with Gary Busey peddling your product, you have to have some amount of humor. Right?

Somehow, after this trailer, our interest in Saints Row 2 shot up from "oh, just another Grand Theft Auto clone" to "oh, wow, this is an awesome Grand Theft Auto clone!" The latest trailer doesn't hide its inspirations; in fact, it revels in them. However, the trailer smartly asks "would you rather," comparing its features to those found in Liberty City's adventures. When the choice is between bowling and spewing sewage on passerbys, we may have a winner.[Via Joystiq]

The latest "please get excited to buy us" trailer for Saints Row 2 takes some playful potshots at Grand Theft Auto IV. The video, which we've placed after the break, asks us if we'd like to do mundane tasks like bowling in GTA IV or more over-the-top things in Saints Row 2, like shooting sewage at pedestrians? The trailer is a tiny bit awkward, acting as if THQ's game will be available right after players are done with GTA IV. We really don't know how long they expect us to be playing GTA IV, but considering Saints Row 2 doesn't come out until October, chances are we'll be done with it sooner than they anticipate.
