YouTube video production team The Farlanders created a special save file for the PC version of Minecraft that offers a new, more claustrophobic spin on the blocky survival game. Called "Captive Minecraft," the modified game spawns players into an enclosed 1x1 block in the game's world, which expands as players earn achievements for activities such as looking at their inventory, gathering wood from trees or building items like workbenches and furnaces. The Farlanders launched beta version 1.3 of Captive Minecraft this morning, which adds more gold ore to the world and relies less on the Nether regions to earn sugar cane and the "Into Fire" achievement. To install Captive Minecraft, players simply need to download the world save from the spin-off's site. It requires version 1.8, snapshot 14w18b or later of Minecraft. [Image: The Farlanders]

  • Users report PlayStation 4 error corrupting save files

PlayStation 4 early adopters are experiencing a widespread data corruption error resulting in lost progress and unplayable games, according to frequent reports in a 34-page PlayStation Forum thread. Joystiq reader "Jim" wrote in to report the loss of 30 hours' worth of progress as a result of a glitch that the PS4 console identifies as "Error CE-34878-0." The bug isn't isolated to a specific game, as PlayStation community members report lost progress across several titles in the PlayStation 4's library, including NBA 2K14, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. In rare cases, "CE-34878-0" prevents users from starting any PlayStation 4 application, rendering the console unusable. PlayStation forum members suggest a variety of solutions to the issue, ranging from save file deletion to a full console replacement. We've reached out to Sony for comment and await a response.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition developer 4J Studios is working with Microsoft to port save files for the game from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One. The developer tweeted as much today, noting that it "can't say it'll be there" until it works perfectly. Microsoft first announced during its E3 press event in June that the hit block-busting, sandbox-style construction game will come to its next-generation console. No launch date has been confirmed for either of the PS4 or Xbox One versions of Minecraft, though the developer said this week that it plans to bring the PS3 version of the game out first.

  • MLB 14 The Show on PS4 has far more faces in the virtual crowd

MLB 14: The Show will launch in spring 2014 for PS4, PS3 and Vita, Sony announced. Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera will be featured on the game's cover. Developer Sony San Diego unveiled a teaser trailer that boasts the ways that the game will take advantage of the PS4's graphical upgrades. For instance, MLB 14: The Show designer and community manager Ramone Russell notes that the PS3 only allowed for 42 different character models for fans in the virtual crowd for the game, whereas the PS4 allows for over a thousand. Russell says the game will also be "feature complete" on the next-gen system, and won't lose the series' Road to the Show and franchise modes in its transition to the PS4. Speaking of which, Sony added that starting with MLB 14: The Show, players will be able to carry their save files over to subsequent releases in the series, giving players' Road to the Show athletes and other career mode efforts life beyond the annual game's limited life cycle.

  • Next-gen upgrades won't include single-player saves

With the variety of upgrade programs offered for players to switch from current-generation to next-gen systems in the coming months, one thing they won't be able to bring to their new Xbox One or PS4 systems is their single-player save files. Representatives for EA, Ubisoft and Activision confirmed to Kotaku that each respective publisher does not have a method for porting single-player campaign save files for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts to PS4 and Xbox One. In the case of Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts, both games will see multiplayer progress carried over to next-gen systems. EA also announced an upgrade program for Madden NFL 25 in July that not only ports your Madden Ultimate Team cards to next-gen systems, but also offers six free card packs to Anniversary Edition owners. Best Buy, Amazon, GameStop and Sony have their own $10 game upgrade programs, but none seem to save your single-player campaigns for you. Whether that impacts upgrade or current-gen purchasing plans for players remains to be seen.

  • Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions save files are permanent, unable to be reset or erased

When Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D dropped earlier this summer without the ability to reset save files, gamers were justifiably mad. And though it's been over a month since that story broke, it seems that another Japanese publisher didn't pick up on the resulting backlash. Namco's latest 3DS title, Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions regrettably contains that exact issue. According to Wired's Game|Life blog, there is simply no way to erase a save after it's been written to the cartridge. "I've looked all over, even going so far as to ask a Namco Bandai representative, and it doesn't seem like there's a way to erase the game data," the post reads, noting that this design doesn't just affect the earned in-game awards (which can't be deleted), but also high scores. That means the most recent high score is the only one that the game records -- bizarre! As Capcom's version of the save file issue sparked reaction from both retail and consumers (and, eventually, Capcom), we've reached out to GameStop for comment about Namco's own misdeeds.

  • Report: PS3 getting cloud saving in firmware update 3.60

According to a recent report from Kotaku, unnamed sources in the game development community have received notifications from Sony telling of a feature which will be incorporated into PS3 firmware update 3.60: Cloud storage for saved games. According to the report, the feature (called "Online Saving") gives developers the opportunity to let players set up their save files on a remote server, preserving the precious, precious space on their own hard drives, and allowing players to access save data from multiple consoles. These developers also reportedly explained that the feature will only be made available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, or, as they'll henceforth be called, the "Save File Insured." This report sounds fairly believable -- remote storage was one of the rumored features of PlayStation Plus before its reveal, and there was also that Sony trademark for "PS Cloud" back in 2009. We've contacted Sony for a comment on this report.

  • Dead Space save file unlocks original plasma cutter in Dead Space 2

Here's a nice bonus for fans of the original Dead Space. If you have any save file -- completed or not -- from the first title, you'll unlock the original plasma cutter right off the bat for use in the upcoming sequel. Hardcore players should be more than familiar with the gun, thanks to an Achievement that forces players to complete an entire playthrough using only that gun. But don't expect the plasma cutter to give you much of an advantage at the beginning of the Dead Space 2 campaign. Although you'll get access to the gun, Visceral Games' Louis Gascoigne told us that the upgrades you purchased for the weapon won't carry over into the sequel. Isaac Clarke just can't get a break, can he?

  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow PS3 patch live

Now that PSN is back in working order, we're happy to inform you that the patch for the PS3 version of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is online. It would be a really good idea to install it, too, considering that it addresses the random loss of your save data. According to the Konami's announcement, the patch also institutes some minor changes, including the addition of scrolling text on loading screens in the interest of readability. It also seems the text will now be easier to read without being distracted by the fear for your save file. Additionally, Konami said that an upcoming patch for the Xbox 360 version of the game would be detailed "shortly."

  • Mass Effect save file transfers 'hundreds' of decisions to sequel

When BioWare told us to hold on to our save files from Mass Effect for use in the highly anticipated sequel, our minds drew simple conclusions. We figured it would determine our character's appearance, for example. However, a recent PC World interview with Mass Effect 2 lead producer Casey Hudson reveals the save file's true purpose: it keeps track of your every decision during the first game, which in turn will affect the plot of the second. Not just the big decisions, either -- Hudson says that the player made "hundreds" of choices in Mass Effect that have an impact on the sequel. For instance, Commander Shepard superfan Conrad Verner made a brief appearance in the first game. Players could respond to his fandom in a number of ways (ignoring him, threatening him, supporting him) -- however you decided to treat Conrad will ultimately affect his subplot in the second game. Us? We sent him to hostile alien territories to go snipe hunting. We're worried he'll have a bone to pick with us.This all sounds very cool, but we're still curious whether or not our characters' stats, abilities and equipment will carry over from the first game. Screw the story elements -- we're attached to raw, unbridled power.[Via VG247]

  • Fire Emblem transfer glitch to be fixed

One neat feature in the Wii's Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is that you can import a save file from the game's GameCube prequel, Path of Radiance. This will give some of your characters stat boosts, not to mention a few other nice perks. For anyone who just rolled through PoR on easy mode in order to beat the game quickly and pump their characters full of bonus experience, however, Radiant Dawn will laugh at you and then slap you in the face for good measure. See, easy mode files don't transfer over to Radiant Dawn because (as you'll know if you've played the game), the word "easy" isn't in its vocabulary. Even if you try to transfer a normal or hard mode file while having any easy mode PoR files saved somewhere else on your card, Radiant Dawn will have none of that. Christian from The Tanooki decided to contact Nintendo on the issue, and it seems that Nintendo will have a fix ready by mid-December. In order to get your disc repaired (or possibly get a completely new disc), you have to contact Nintendo about the issue, give them your name, address, and phone number, and then send your disc to them when prompted. So, what lesson have we learned from all this? Well, that Fire Emblem is for badasses only, of course.

  • First US PSP game save uploaded!

Perhaps it's not the first-ever, but it's the first time a US PSP game save has been posted at the PSP-Vault-and the first time we've noticed. Unfortunately, there's no description of the save's contents, only that it's a WipEout Pure file. At any rate, it's a significant milestone and likely the beginning of an important trend. Ain't it great to share? [Thanks, Gavin]
