It's a quieter week on PSN, with just two new games each for PS3 and Vita. Starting with the portable, Borderlands 2 gets a standalone release ($40) after featuring in last week's Vita 2000 bundle, and Soul Sacrifice Delta has a few freebies in a limited edition bundle ($36). As for the PS3 new releases, there's Episode 3 of The Walking Dead Season 2 ($5, or part of $20 season pass) and the slightly belated Serious Sam 3: BFE ($20, or $15 with Plus). Also, JRPG fans may be tempted by a new Tales bundle that combines Graces f with Xillia ($60). Finally, some bits and bobs to round up: Skullgirls Encore on PS3 is the latest Plus freebie, Dishonored is permanently price reduced to $20, and the PS Blog has all the latest sales and Plus discounts. Humble Bundle organizers have launched the Humble Jumbo Bundle, serving up digital copies of Unknown Worlds' FPS Natural Selection 2, Coffee Stain Studios' tower defense shooter Sanctum 2 and Paradox Interactive's DLC-bundled Magicka for a buyer-chosen price ($1 minimum). Beat the bundle's average purchase price (currently hovering around $4) and you'll also receive Robot Entertainment's Orcs Must Die! 2: Complete Pack, Croteam's retro-styled shooter Serious Sam 3: BFE, and Facepunch Studios' sandbox mayhem simulator Garry's Mod. Note that Garry's Mod requires a Source engine game such as Counter-Strike: Source or Half-Life 2 as a base in order to function, but considering that it gives players the power to create brilliant works like Half life: Full Life Consequences, it's worth it. The Humble Jumbo Bundle will remain available for sale through December 17.

Also included are Vlambeer's turn-based RPG Serious Sam: The Random Encounter, Mommy's Best Games' gun-stacking side-scroller Serious Sam Double D, and Be-Rad Entertainment's autoscrolling platformer Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack. Announced back in July, the 'Jewel of the Nile' DLC pack for Serious Sam 3: BFE finally has a launch date: October 16. Jewel of the Nile features three campaign missions that take place during the middle of the single-player story, transporting Sam and his tight white t-shirt to the Temple of Isis on the island of Philae. All three missions will be playable alone and in co-op, and feature a few new weapons for an asking price of $9.99. Sam will even encounter "a monstrous temple guardian" boss and probably a bunch of other screaming monsters, because that's what happens in Sam's world. He'll even have to fight an Aludran Reptiloid but you probably already knew that because you saw the screen above. Look how perceptive you are!%Gallery-167519%

Survival Diary, Day Four:I don't know how much longer I can keep hiding here. It was safe at first; quiet even, like a snow-packed forest or the very depths of the sea, but his footsteps continue to grow closer. Eventually, he's going to find me, and when he does the very core of me will be torn inside out and used to purchase games like Saints Row: The Third, The Walking Dead or any number of the other games on sale today.I know now that my sanctuary beneath the sofa is no longer a sufficient haven in which to ensconce myself, so I must attempt to find new refuge. There's a very good chance this is my last entry, so please, if you find this, tell the pocket watch I love her.Always,Wallet

His eyes -- how they twinkle! His dimples -- how merry! His cheeks are adorned with phat shades from Burberry. His mouth is set hard, like grayscale concrete, And his scraggly man-beard leaves the ladies effete. For this elf isn't jolly, or chubby or plump; This Santa, he ain't putting up with no coal or no chumps. No this Santa's a free skin in Croteam's new update. So go ahead, download him -- do it now, don't be late! Yeah he's armed and he's angry and he's all out of gum, And he don't care if you're naughty or nice, smart or dumb. • The painful sting of Serious Sam 3's anti-piracy protection

    by
    JC Fletcher

    12.07.2011

Software piracy is illegal and unfair to the people who make and sell games. That's enough of a deterrent for most people. The rest may find the giant, invincible, super-fast, assault-rifle-wielding scorpion monster more convincing. That's the new DRM measure enacted by Serious Sam 3: BFE developer Croteam. We see the potential for this to become an industry-standard method of preventing unauthorized game copying. Or, in simpler terms, if that scary-ass monster wants to go into other games, we are powerless to stop it.

As Serious Sam 3 spokes-dude Rich Knuckles is quick to point out, however, that's "kids blood" in the plural sense, not "kid's blood" in the possessive. Not that "multiple child blood" sounds much better, mind you, but it's actually not as bad as it seems.

  • Serious Sam 3 review: Rebel in excess

    by
    Ludwig Kietzmann
    Ludwig Kietzmann
    12.02.2011

There is a speck of decency to be found in the unvarnished and churlish Serious Sam. It's right there in the name: despite all temptations and probable pleading from the marketing department, it didn't come out as "Shoot Many Monsters." That's exactly what you do, over and over again, but the important thing is how you do it. Be careful what you call mindless. Serious Sam 3: BFE lacks the long-term mental overhead of equipment upgrades and character augmentation, and the only emergent gameplay is something slimy crawling out of a cocoon, but it does know how to commandeer concentration -- ruthlessly. You're so plugged in from moment to moment, fingers flitting over the keyboard as you sprint, dodge and shuffle weapons in an onslaught of snorting beasts, it's a lie to think you haven't thought. So involving is the instinctive, mechanical game that context becomes a luxury.
