  • Dozens of realms under long maintenance tomorrow

There will be two kinds of maintenance tomorrow. The first kind will be from 3:00 a.m. PDT until 11:00 a.m. PDT. This is the "normal" maintenance time. This will apply to all realms that are not on the list after the break. The second kind of maintenance will be from 12:00 a.m. PDT until 12:00 p.m. PDT. The realms after the break will be undergoing this maintenance. It is likely the Wintergrasp changes we just broke will go live tomorrow. There's a bit of uproar about them, and it'll be interesting to see exactly what the changes are. There is no indication if patch 3.1.2 will be dropping tomorrow or not.The list of realms down for half a day after the break.

Happy Tuesday Morning, everyone. We're expecting a short downtime this morning, 5 AM - 11 AM Pacific. Patch 3.1.2 probably won't go live quite yet what with the new build on the PTR, so hopefully this will be a relatively smooth downtime. As always, the downtimes is great time to catch up on the news from the past week, and there were a few good stories that broke over the past 7 days. The biggest news was the epic tale of Karatechop. From Armory sleuthing, we discovered that he'd been one-shotting Ulduar thanks to a GM Item. Blizzard shut down his account and the accounts of most of his guild, and he talked to us about it. The debate on what he should have done rages on. Of course, if you've had your fill of Martin Fury, we have more for you to browse:

There'll be some good ol' sever maintenance for us all tomorrow, lasting from 5:00 a.m. PDT / 8:00 a.m. EDT until 11:00 a.m. PDT / 1:00 p.m. EDT.We are not expecting patch 3.1.2 to drop tomorrow, given there is a new PTR build tonight. That makes the chances a patch will drop highly unlikely. There have been some recent Ulduar nerfs that have come into being, and we're on the lookout for additional hotfixes they'll apply during tomorrow's downtime.

We've had a week of Patch 3.1.1, and all seems... well, more or less well. There's been hotfixes nearly every day, and scattered reports that talents are still being wonky for some people, but the major bugs seem to be squelched. Maybe. We have an extended maintenance again this week which will herald patch 3.1.1a. This means you have plenty of time to read WoW Insider. Here's the usual roundup of the past week's hot news.

Patch 3.1.1a, which we previously covered last week, will be coming during tomorrow's extended maintenance. This is according to a small update Crygil gave this evening. While we don't have the full patch notes yet, Patch 3.1.1a will just correct small issues that cannot be hot-fixed into the game. Notably, the tooltip to the Paladin's Exorcism ability will be updated to reflect that it cannot be used on players.Realms will be down from 3:00 a.m. PDT / 6:00 a.m. EDT until 11:00 a.m. PDT / 2:00 p.m. EDT. We'll let you know when they're up, and if there will be any additional extended maintenance.

Welcome to Patch Day! Seems like we were just here, doesn't it? But anyway, it looks like we're headed for 3.1.1 today, which is mostly be bugs fixes that were a bit too involved to be applied via hotfix. That, of course, means we get an extended downtime again, from 3 AM to 11 AM Pacific time. When it rains, it seems it pours! This time, hopefully there won't be any free-playtime-worthy unexpected downtime. While you're waiting for the servers come up so you can continue work on that second champion title or de-arm Kologarn or get started on Season 6, I suggest one of two things: First thing you can do go out and buy Arthas. Unless you won it from us or something. Otherwise, I'd say it's a good morning for catching up WoW Insider. Here's a few suggestions to get you started:

People never believe me when I say the Horde is my favorite of the two factions and that most of my characters are only Alliance because that is the faction my friends play. Of course, this evening, it's easy to see why I sometimes have a hard time convincing them of this fact, as I have spent the last few hours gushing about King Varian Wrynn to anyone who will listen and even a few people who won't. Seriously, if you are in a place that allows the streaming of video and sound, you should watch the new Ulduar trailer. Varian is so amazing, I almost needed a change of pants after I finished watching. But hey, only some of us are lore nerds, and I'm sure a lot of you are here looking for some prime patch 3.1 gameplay and feature information, what with extended maintenance and said patch 3.1 going live today. Luckily, you're in luck. You lucky person you. Expect loads of patch 3.1 information articles and roundups as the day progresses, including dual spec information and galleries showcasing the new sights and sounds of the new patch. In the meantime, you can start your reading with our official constantly updated Guide to Patch 3.1 and this roundup of some of the hottest news from the past week:

    04.07.2009

If I may be allowed to indulge in a little self-aggrandizing on this fine Tuesday morning, I'd like to posit that the best article written this past week was posted on Sunday and written by me. This article is the review of Christie Golden's new Warcraft novel, Arthas. Now, before you accuse me of the sin of Pride, I should say that Alex totally agrees with me, so it's all good. Besides, I had some awesome inspiration courtesy of the book. But my point is, you should go read the review, then go pre-order your copy. It's a pretty good book. If you're a lore or fantasy fan, there's a pretty excellent chance you will not be disappointed. That said, the release date is still a couple weeks off. This means that, in the meantime, you have no Arthas book, so you'll probably want to do the next best thing and read some WoW Insider, like during that 15 minute window while your server's down from rolling restarts this morning. Or longer if you're on one of the servers that may or may not get extra downtime. Here's a few reading suggestions:

  • Widespread server problems tonight [Updated]

    04.02.2009

We've been getting numerous reports of widespread server outages tonight, apparently mainly focused on the Northrend area.I've experienced this first hand on a couple of my servers, and several people have been reporting it to us both via the tip line and by pointing us in the direction of the official forums. There has been no word from Blizzard yet as to exactly what the cause is, but that'll likely change. All we know is that they're looking at it.Just another day in Azeroth... or not.Updated 12:55 a.m. EDT: We've received some odd reports of the letters "FU" appearing outside of Violet Hold in Dalaran on some severs, and of pictures like this. Quite odd. There's a possible story developing here, or it could just be very wacky server behavior. Blizzard is apparently aware of the picture linked (and many like it), and is working towards a solution.

Here we are, my old friend. You and I, waiting for downtime again. Yeah, we got a little spot of downtime coming our way again. I'd recommend you go check out Vin Diesel in the latest installation of the greastest series of cinematic triumph of our time, Fast & Furious, but that isn't coming out until Friday. Also, I am a little hurt that it was not named 4 Fast 4 Furious, as would only be proper. Also, I stumbled across a pretty heinous spoiler on IMDB that may have ruined the movie for me. Get this. Are you ready? Here's the big reveal: It has an ampersand in the title. Yeah. But anyway, it doesn't come out til Friday, so I suppose you'll have to satisfy yourself with WoW news. As usual, you can get your WoW information fix here while you can't play. We got a new build fresh up on the PTR, so expect news from that and a wide variety of other good stuff. In addition, you'll probably want to check out what's been happening in the last few days. As usual, I got a few things you might want to take a look at after the break.

There appears to be connection problems going around as multiple people are unable to log in tonight, including multiple tipsters and yours truly. It's definitely a widespread problem, as the Blizzard Tech Support team is currently asking for ISP and tracert information over on the official forums while they try to track it down. While some people are positing that this is a merged battle.net account problem, it's worth noting that we also know of many people, including a couple of our bloggers, are still able to log in fine with a battle.net account. At the same time, some posters in the aforementioned thread are saying that they can log on fine when they use an unmerged pre-battle.net account from a family member or roommate.Once we get a clearer idea of what the problem is or when it's been fixed, we'll let you know.UPDATE, 10:30 PM EST: Okay, This is Daniel again, and I can log on with a battle.net account. This is the same one that wasn't working not 10 minutes ago, for the record.UPDATE, 11 PM EST: It looks everything is working fine again. Play on!

So here we are. 5 AM Pacific is almost upon us, then we'll have downtime until 11 AM Pacific (Unless they extend it again). That means it's closing time. One last call for exp, so finish your grinding or quest, and whatnot. As usual, I'm going to suggest that you fill that WoW-less void in your life with some browsing of WoW Insider. But first, I have something to get off my chest. It's something I have felt needs saying for a long time, and I'm now I'm going to say it, so listen up: Vin Diesel could beat Chuck Norris any day.I've been saying it for years, seriously. Vin Diesel is so much better than Chuck Norris. Whoever first replaced Chuck Norris with Vin Diesel in all those Barrens Chat jokes, you and I need to have some words, I swear. And now I have even more evidence that Vin Diesel is the true master of badassedness: He actually plays WoW.But anyway, back on topic. That wasn't the biggest piece of news this week, as weird as it may seen. We just got solid confirmation of a new Battleground, not to mention the new gamer fuel and a bunch of UI and Addon news that everyone's still buzzing about. Since we're all stuck not playing WoW for a bit, why not check all that out now? As always, I have a list of the best and hottest news under the cut.

Yes, today's title is a horrible pun. To be fair, I blame Rossi. But it was just too awesome NOT to use. Maybe the Argent Tournament will have a circus with a sideshow, then it will even be on topic, in a sort of prophetic off topic sort of way. It's extended maintenance today, from 3 AM to 11 AM Pacific, so we're facing another rather long WoW drought. No, I wouldn't bet on 3.1 going live. I'd say we have at least a few more builds to go for that. Maybe even one later today with all this maintenance stuff going on. But for now, let me do my usual and suggest that you browse WoW Insider in lieu of playing. We have tons of nice juicy 3.1 information for you to dig through. I've compiled some of the best stuff from the past 7 days or so past the break.

In the last fifteen minutes or so we've received numerous reports that authentication servers are down for North American realms. While the outage does not appear to be affecting anyone in game, those folks logging in will be stuck at "authenticating" for the time being. There has been no word from Blizzard about this, but if we've gotten a dozen tips about this in the past fifteen minutes, I'm sure they have too. We'll update this post when we have more information.Update #1: Speak of the devil, there's a blue post about this now.Update #2: It appears the issue is now resolved.

Play Lord of the Rings Online? Yes? Good. Now, are you running Windows Vista? If you said yes again, then do we have a gadget for you.Galdorad over at the LotRO forums has found a pretty nice gadget for the Vista sidebar that checks in on the status of LotRO servers. He's made a few tweaks to the gadget to add some more functionality, but it's still a handy little gadget that can keep you apprised of the game's state. With it, you don't have to log into the patcher or leave it running, if you want to keep your system resources down. If you're interested, you can jump on the gadget download over at the forum post, which also shows you how to add the LotRO patcher news feed into your Vista RSS reader. And yes, we know you're going to complain about Vista in the comments. We're psychic, you know.[Via 2 High Road]

    03.10.2009

Good Morning, and welcome to another week of 3.1 PTR shenanigans. In the past week we've had a couple new builds, some rather heinous nerfs to certain tanking classes, and some pretty awesome new achievements and quests. We're expecting more of the same this week, although I can't help but pray for a few fewer nerfs, if possible. One thing we are also expecting this morning is some downtime, from 5 AM to 11 AM Pacific time. Since you'll be bereft of WoW, we'll do our usual and suggest you do some reading of WoW Insider. For example, you may want to check out back issues of The Queue or The Daily Quest and see if a question or link catches your eye. You can also read on after the break for our usual roundup of the best news and features from the past week.

It's been about a week since the 3.1 PTR dropped, and we've already had one small PTR Update and a couple more patch note updates. We haven't seen any major earthshattering new patches yet, but hey, we've had more than enough juicy new stuff to mull over anyway. We're expecting a new round of class changes to hit the PTR soon, but this morning, it's sort of quiet, especially on the live server side, where all we have is a few rolling restarts. Yeah, but anyway, on with the topic of the week, and likely of the next few weeks, patch 3.1. You'll want to keep our guide to 3.1 bookmarked if you haven't already, and after the break, you can check out a list of some the best articles from the past week, both 3.1-related and otherwise.

    02.24.2009

I think I'm officially declaring this past weekend the weekend of the tease as far as Blizzard and World of Warcraft goes. While we did get some PTR information earlier in the week, it started in earnest on Friday, with a flurry of PTR related activity. The PTR forums went up with current stickies, Character copy went active, and Zarhym and some of the other blues were posting very coyly on the forums when asked about the PTR status. Then nothing happened. On Sunday, we were told again that the PTR would be coming in the next week, and probably sooner rather than later. Still, Monday dawned with nothing. By late Monday, the Character Copy queue suddenly started to drop drastically in wait time, making people believe the copies were being loaded on to the PTR in preparation for an evening release. At the last, we got one final tease: The new Argent Tournament, complete with a laundry list of incredibly exciting but incredibly vague features. But hey, it all paid off in the end. The Patch Notes are out, and the PTR is up.Seriously though, all this weekend I've been feeling like I'm back in High school and it's almost time for the Sadie Hawkins dance, and the cutest girl in the senior class is flirting with me, except I'm not sure if she's going to ask me out, or go laugh with her girlfriends about teasing the school nerd. But hey, I had my lucky pog and my coolest slap wristband on me, and it apparently all worked out, so it's cool.Anyway, with all this PTR junk, it's worth noting that we still have maintenance for live servers. An extended 3 AM to 11 AM PST maintenance at that. Luckily, while you're waiting, you have plenty of 3.1 PTR news and analysis to read right here on WoW Insider. Let's look at that and some other stuff from the past week or so.

Logging on and playing might be rather difficult. All US servers are undergoing what now appears to be multiple restarts (Eldre'Thalas has restarted twice in the last 30 minutes). The logon announcement tells us that the process will take two hours, and each realm will be down for about 15 minutes.Ideally this won't be something that impacts the game too long. And dang nabit, it better not, because yours truly has a lot of free time this weekend he plans to use leveling up his Shaman. While the servers are down, why not check out WoW Insider's Guide to Patch 3.1? It'll at least keep you wowified for the time being. And if the servers do stay down for too long this weekend, I just want to let our Editor-in-Chief Elizabeth Harper know that I'm going to join Alex in playing Warhammer.

So we've now had around a week to settle into patch 3.0.8, and to say the least, many people aren't impressed. Lag, new bugs, and game-crashing bugs abound, and it seems very few people have anything nice to say about Blizzard. The dev team, for their part, does seem to be working to redeem themselves and will (If all goes well, cautions Ghostcrawler) push bug fixes for Warlocks, Death Knights, and Hunters to the live servers during today's extended maintenance. Whether we're getting patch 3.0.9 or just a couple quick server side fixes isn't clear, but whichever it is, we're getting downtime. Be sure to keep checking WoW Insider for up to minute news on what's going down with the downtime and the bug fixes. In the meantime, you can keep reading for a roundup of the hottest news and features from the past week. And hey, bug fixes and possible patch day panic aside, the Lunar Festival is still going strong. Be sure to check out our guide to getting to the Holiday if you haven't yet.
