Netflix is making the most out of its deals with TV legend Shonda Rhimes and Planet of the Apes/Cloverfield director Matt Reeves by putting them together for one ambitious project. The creators will work on a feature film and a TV universe based on Blake Crouch's upcoming sci-fi thriller novel Recursion. It's unclear what the streaming platform means by "TV universe" -- it could be a full-blown series, but it could also just be a limited series that expands on the feature film. According to Netflix Recursion is about a "save-the-world sci-fi thriller, an epic romance, and an intricate police procedural," which makes it sound like a cross between Cloverfield and How to Get Away with Murder.

On Friday Netflix revealed the first eight series in the works as a result of its production deal with Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes. They include a previously-announced show focusing on the exploits alleged con artist Anna Delvey, as well as an adaptation of the 2010 Pulitzer prize-winning book The Warmth of Other Suns. Another series will stem from former Reddit CEO Ellen Pao's memoir Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Change that detailed her life, career and gender discrimination lawsuit against VC firm Kleiner Perkins. In a statement, Rhimes said: "I wanted the new Shondaland to be a place where we expand the types of stories we tell, where my fellow talented creatives could thrive and make their best work and where we as a team come to the office each day filled with excitement...Ted (Sarandos) and Cindy (Holland) and everyone at Netflix have been incredible partners in making that happen. This is Shondaland 2.0."

Disney recently turned the screws on Netflix by pulling its content and unveiling a streaming service of its own, but now the tables have turned. Netflix revealed that it has signed Shonda Rhimes away from Disney-owned ABC to a multiyear production deal. Rhimes and her production company, Shondaland, will move from their ABC Studios base to Netflix, though she'll continue to work on ABC shows currently airing or in development like Grey's Anatomy.
