  • SOE gives customer support a holiday break

The holidays aren't fun, games, and brightly colored trees for players alone. Even the grunts who ensure that the games run smoothly get to have a break too. Sony Online Entertainment has issued a friendly holiday warning this week, reminding players that because of the impending holiday, customer support is going to be severely limited. On Christmas Eve Day, support will be closed promptly at 5PM EST and will remain closed for the duration of Christmas Day. For the remainder of the week from the 26th to the 28th, support will be limited to chat and email during regular business hours. Tech support will also be limited to chat and email for New Years from December 31st to January 1st.So try not to break anything over the next couple weeks, because there might not be anybody there to feel (and attend to) your pain.

Update: Warcry and SOE are hosting an IRC chat with developers from Vanguard tonight, giving players a chance to ask them some questions. Go here for the full details, and we will post a summary of the event later in the day. This may not be quite as good as a free lunch, but if you've had a Vanguard account in the past, Sony Online Entertainment is willing to foot the bill between the 19th of December and the 17th of January for you to try the game out again. Just to re-emphasize -- you need to have had an account for the game beforehand. The news comes from Vanguard Vault, and they picked it up from SOE's podcast. If you do choose to get back into Vanguard, you'll be able to take part in some of the holiday festivities that have been introduced in Game Update 3, as well as other updates that this patch has brought, which includes some raid content. If you have for some reason uninstalled the game already, you can download it again here.[Thanks, sevenwind]

  • Could Planes of Power be the next EverQuest II expansion?

    by

    12.19.2007

The Ancient Gaming Noob is a great title for a blog. Even better: the blog offers insightful and intelligent commentary on Massively Multiplayer games. In fact, about a year ago Wilhelm (the blog's author) prognosticated the Kunark setting for the next EverQuest II expansion. When he stepped up to the plate with another guess earlier this week, I couldn't help but pay attention.Wilhelm figures that Sony Online Entertainment is going to be dipping back into the EverQuest lore, but with a twist this time. Instead of more terrestrial real-estate, he imagines they're going to look to the heavens for inspiration. In essence: a revisit to the Planes of Power. His logic is great, and his argument is fairly persuasive. It hinges on what high-end players want most: Raids. Progression. Equipment. All of those in enough measure to keep the high end guilds busy for a long time. Perhaps all of these aspects in enough measure for some EverQuest guilds to take a serious second look at EverQuest II. While I expect that the basics of the new planes will be the similar to how the exist currently in EverQuest, which is to say instanced versus wide open, there will have to be changes. The gods will no doubt have revised their defenses. Of course, they won't go overboard, as you can only have 24 people on an EverQuest II raid, unless they chose to change that as well. For the rest of us, he predicts a new Beastmaster-style class that draws a lot of elements from the Hunter in World of Warcraft, as well as new AA options. To me, it sounds totally reasonable. Are we looking at new planes? Perhaps zones somewhere on the shards of Luclin? Certainly they wouldn't pull Velious out of the closet? What do you think?

Now that Scott Hartsman has stepped down as senior producer for EverQuest II, the folks at EQ2 Players decided to interview his replacement, Bruce "Froech" Ferguson. Ferguson is no newbie to EQII, and his appointment to senior producer marks his return to the game after spending a few years as a project manager for Sony Online Entertainment in general. In the interview, we find out about his feelings on returning to EQII, what exactly the position of senior producer entails, his gaming background, the future of EQII, and some other fun stuff. The interview is also available in audio form, so if your tired eyes need a rest from a hard day prowling the internets, you can let your ears take over for a bit -- otherwise, follow the related story link for the full interview.

  • SOE caught red-handed: EQ2 Player / Dev relationship breached ethical boundaries

    by
    Matt Warner
    Matt Warner
    12.16.2007

Several days ago Massively reported that EQ2 Flames administrator broke the story on a scandal that regards numerous members from Unhallowed Triad, a guild on EQ2's Test server that was transferred to Unrest, a Live server through an inside connection at SOE. Character transfers from the Test server to a Live one is not allowed and against current SOE transfer policy; albeit, the EULA has a clause that SOE may change this policy at any time. However, the case is made that a Player / Dev affiliation has led to corruption, leaving many infuriated players with lots of unanswered questions as seen in these two threadnaughts. To recap for those not following this closely or wanting to sift through 100+ pages on the forums: SOE employee(s) abused their power breaking various codes of ethics (confirmed & guilty) Numerous Test players accuse Unhallowed Triad with a history of exploitation and getting away with it in due part to their SOE connection (rumors) Someone at SOE made the call to transfer Test characters to a Live server breaking policy (confirmed & guilty) Not only were characters transferred to Unrest, but items as well. Unhallowed Triad's Guild level was also inflated to 60. (confirmed & guilty) Many Unhallowed Triad guild members admitted to transferring off test in Assassin's chat (confirmed) Several Unhallowed Triad guild members were transferred unknowingly (more than likely) Legitimately leveled characters belonging to several Unhallowed Triad members were transferred over from other servers or already leveled on the Unrest server (confirmed) Unhallowed Triad guild tag no longer exists but there other guild tag Unholy Trinity exists and their Guild level stands at 30 (confirmed) All players on the Test server have not been given the same opportunity to transfer to a Live server The evidence found via EQ2 Players alone is overwhelming. So much so that it's impossible to sweep all the allegations under-the-rug. Initially, SOE was quick to react as both Alan "Brenlo" Crosby, Director of Global Community Relations and Bruce "Froech" Ferguson, EQ2's new Senior Producer admitted to SOE's involvement. Well, rather that someone at SOE made the call to override the policy, but in a good natured manner to reward certain players for their hard work on the Test server. Not a smart choice of words or tone given EQ2 players warranted concerns. In any case, Ferguson claims the transferred characters will be removed. Since their initial statements and response there has been no further word from a SOE representative on this matter.

Reader Errantdreams offers up this shot from Flying Lab Software's upcoming MMO Pirates of the Burning Sea. Errant tells us:I just love PotBS's character customization -- you can create anything from a dirty ol' man to a strapping lad to just about any sort of woman, and in the first major content patch they're apparently going to add varying body types, so yes, you'll be able to play a fat pirate! It's like CoX except non-superhero.Oh yes, over here at Massively we do love a good character creation minigame, and PotBS has a great one, with enough different options to make a pirate that's you and only you.Could your in-game avatar be you and no one elses? • Overview of EverQuest's task system

    by

    12.15.2007

The official site for EverQuest has up a new informational page on the Task system. Intended to fill the niche taken up by traditional quests in other games, Tasks are variable-length adventures that give Norrathian heroes a sense of purpose and a handsome reward. Introduced back in the Omens of War expansion, the guide runs down the different types of Tasks, where you can reliably find them, and a bit about the Task interface.Tasks are primarily used for single person quests. These are intended to be completed solo and usually have a reward of experience and coin. You cannot share tasks with other characters, though if two characters have tasks that require similar or identical things they can be completed at the same time. You can only have one task or shared task at a time. Most tasks can be obtained from taskmasters found throughout Norrath. Common locations include home cities for lower-level tasks, as well as higher-level areas like Butcherblock Mountains, Dreadlands, Overthere, Swamp of No Hope, Toxxulia Forest and more.

  • EQII's senior producer resigns

    12.14.2007

On his personal blog, Scott Hartsman has reposted a farewell letter to the EQ2 community. Originally put up on the official boards, Hartsman has been EverQuest 2's Senior Producer for some years; prior to that he worked on the game in a technical capacity. In the letter, he has glowing things to say about his time with Sony Online Entertainment but remains vague about where he is going next. It's time for me to see what else is out there waiting to be built. It might even end up being something involving SOE. Regardless, I'm sure we'll get a chance to meet up again, whether I'm making new MMOs, continuing to play them, or talking about them on the internet. I wouldn't be leaving SOE if I wasn't positive that the responsibility for EQ2 was being left in the right hands. Taking over for me is Bruce "Froech" Ferguson. Some of you will remember his name from EQ2 beta, others of you may have met him at Fan Faires. If you have met him, you know he's one of the most straightforward guys you'll ever be lucky enough to meet.Hartsman goes on to describe some of Ferguson's credentials. He also uses the term 'we' when describing his new venture, indicating he's already associated with a new project. Whether that's an all-new game or one of the numerous companies currently in 'silent running mode' isn't clear. For more on this, check out our discussion of the rumours of his departure from late last month and expect more as it becomes public.

  • Rumor: Entire guild Unhallowed Triad moved from EQ2 Test Server to live

A thread on popular forums EQ2Flames is asserting that a guild from the EverQuest II Test Server, Unhallowed Triad, has been moved over to the live server Unrest. This is something that SOE had said would never happen, due to the doubled experience gain on Test making it unfair on live players. The poster also claims that there was a GM account in the guild that assisted them in killing things that they could not take down on their own, in order to obtain some of the best gear in the game.

    12.12.2007

As of yesterday Star Wars Galaxies Chapter 8 (which was apparently really hard to work on) is now in testing on the TCPrime and TestCenter servers. We finally get a full sense of the next game update's scope from the full patch notes, available on the official SWG forums. Highlights include the new Space content, of course, including Nova Orion station, the Star Destroyer Heroic encounter, and the new Ord Mantell system. Additional content includes new ship types, updates to the UI, house decorating, and improved waypoint options. Four new ships have been added: the Rebel Incom X4 Gunship, Imperial YE-4 Assault Gunship, Blacksun AEG-77 Vigo Gunship, and the Naboo N-1 Starfighter. Eight new shipwright craftable components have been added (three capacitors, three armor plating, one gunship shield, and one reactor draft schematics). Ships no longer have a parking location, allowing ship view and launch from any planet or terminal. Gyroscopes have been added to all player controller turrets. No longer will pitching/yawing your ship cause your turret to pitch/yaw as well(turret rotation clamps still apply). This should make shooting much easier! The secondary engine appearance of the VT-49 Decimator fixed to use the correct engine glow.

  • Weather comes to Vanguard

Wired's Game|Life blog notes that the beleaguered SOE title Vanguard has a new feature: migrating weather patterns. This interesting addition to the game was originally slated for the game's launch; great to see it finally on live servers. They also link to a lengthy forum thread discussing the subject. "The storms are indeed real. You can see them off in a distance, like that screenshot shows," said SOE designer Lenny Gullo, joining the thread to give confirmation. "The storm there is obviously a few chunks away. But it could, depending on the wind, head your direction." While real-time weather in MMOs has been done before, it's always nice to see Vanguard picking up attributes it was supposed to have at launch. At this rate we'll see a launch-complete version sometime around March 2009.

SoE is really keeping Legends of Norrath players busy, with all of the special events as of late, and today we've learned of yet another. LoN is getting involved in the Frostfell fun with the "Saving Santug" promotion. Players are tasked with defeating the mean Grinnuch to free Santug Claugg. Although anyone would surely save poor old Santug out of the goodness of their heart, you'll be rewarded for your efforts with Santug's own promotional card.As well as the Grinnuch event, any participant in a Holiday Bonus Tournament will get a Santug's Stocking pack that includes items randomly selected from a list (full list after the break), and not all of these items are in-game -- you can score yourself a Legends of Norrath poster, or one of five framed and signed sets of the Jim Lee Oathbound cards. The winner of the each Holiday Bonus Tournament will get a foil version of one of three Santug Claugg promotion cards, one of which is a Lump of Coal with no stats -- nice.On top of all this, log in on the 25th of December for an extra special stocking stuffer surprise. The Saving Santug promotion will bring Frostfell cheer to LoN players from December 21st through January 2nd.

  • Star Wars Galaxies Chapter 8 'one of [the] most difficult'

    12.11.2007

Alongside the Life Day celebration, the Star Wars Galaxies devs are hard at work on Chapter 8. It's already on Test Center, and should be seeing live production sometime this week. Producer Lorin 'DeadMeat' Jameson and Lead Developer Thomas Blair passed on a few thoughts to the folks at SWG Warcry about the work.DeadMeat offered up a letter describing the final days of the development process, while Blair cut to the heart of the matter: the JTL-era content has gotten a bit crusty over the years. The Jump to Lightspeed expansion, which introduced the space game, was released three years ago. Since that time, it's remained mostly untouched. Additionally, changes to the development team also posed problems. "No one here really worked on space," Blair said, "so we had to go talk to the pilots. The pilot community has been great, a big help." Of course, once the team learned what needed to be fixed and what the players would like to see, they then had to figure out how to make changes. Blair likened the update to working on a European car without any metric tools.

The new items have been crafted and photographed for your enjoyment, including Frostfell-themed goodies. The preview includes a look at how to obtain some of the Frostfell recipes and ingredients, and a gallery of both furniture and clothing items that are available for Frostfell 2007. It's not all Frostfell-related crafting items that come with Game Update 41 either, and the preview page includes details on some new candles, lamps, and dishes for your in-game home.So you like what you've seen and can't wait until this is all available on your normal server? Last month we reported on a new expansion for Legends of Norrath by the name of Forsworn. We now know that Forsworn will be released on the 19th of December, and leading up to this date, the EQ2players site is showing off the loot cards that the expansion will bring for both EverQuest and EverQuest II.The feature shows off every loot card, including this sexy pale rhino mount, that will be introduced, 44 in total split evenly between EQ1 and EQ2. As a reminder of some other major features being brought to LoN in Forsworn, there will be 2 on 2 multiplayer, raids involving a group of players bringing their decks and taking on an NPC boss together, and some new single player scenarios. If you want to brush up your skills prior to the expansion, or beef up your card library, there is a tournament going that offers some special cards and booster pack prizes -- but it's only for this weekend, so hurry along if you want to be involved.

EQ2Players informs us of yet another Legends of Norrath tournament this weekend. The theme this time around is Firiona Vie, and every participant in the weekend's tournaments will receive the Firiona Vie, Guardian of Growth card. Everyone will also get a choice between two different loot cards, one for EverQuest and the other EverQuest II, and each of those result in a shapeshift illusion item that buffs the player with a damage shield. The tournament begins at 7:00AM PST on Saturday and concludes at 9:00PM PST on Sunday. The overall winner will get 9 Oathbound booster packs, and the other top-ranking entrants will get between 8 and 4, but everyone who enters will receive 3 packs. So in the end, everyone will get at the minimum 3 booster packs, the Firiona Vie card, and their choice of one of two loot cards -- just for participating. Not too shabby. The fee for entering this contest is 10 event passes.

It's time to deck the halls, fellow Galaxy players! SOE is getting set to roll out the annual Life Day celebration in Star Wars Galaxies. What's Life Day, you ask? Well, only the greatest thing to come out of the Star Wars Holiday Special! No, wait, that's the introduction of Boba Fett.I kid. Life Day is Star Wars' Christmas analog and the SWG devs have actually done a really good job with it. Despite the extremely fishy origins of the holiday, Life Day is something that most Galaxies players seem to appreciate. Every year they offer unique holiday-themed house items for the players, along with Christmas-y events. Here's some of the new content on offer this year: The Tree of Life is bigger and brighter than ever this year! Located in Theed and Kachirho, the mystical properties of the tree are not truly understood. Characters that are over ten days old can use the radial menu on the tree to choose Look for gifts .You will find two presents beneath the tree: one for yourself, and one to share with a friend! When you open the gift for yourself, you will find an Ancient Life Day painting and a Life Day Lamp inside. Use these two decorations in your home to add a festive spirit to your own Life Day parties.[Thanks, MrBreton!]
