Back in April, we were treated to some teaser footage revealing a new Spider-Man game called Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. Since then, there hasn't been much to report on and things have been awfully quiet. We've been wondering: when would we ever see more of the game? The answer would be today. In this new clip, we see some of the guys from developer Shaba Games talk about how they're redefining the Spider-Man games franchise. The biggest improvement revealed so far is the revamped combat system which seems to look like a seamless and smooth experience merging regular combat and versatile webslinging. The ability to switch between red and black spidey suits sounds like a good way to mix gameplay up even more. While this new footage has tingeld our spidey senses, we're still excited to see more. But, when will that be? We're not exactly sure as it's been months since the last time we heard from this title. The next reveal will probably be again mired in another "web of shadows" until then. Oooh, mysterious.

  • Activision: Intellisponse leaks were only "concepts"

Eurogamer has received an official response from Activision about the metric ton of information that leaked from the Intellisponse market research company earlier this week. In this leaked information, several Activision products were mentioned, including a new Tony Hawk title and lots of Spider-Man titles (14 of 'em!). "We regularly test all kinds of game concepts and pricing strategies using market research," stated Activision, "All of which are options whose outcomes are yet to be determined." In other words, don't expect to see all the games mentioned actually come to fruition. Besides, we're pretty sure that even Activision isn't developing 14 new Spider-Man games. Now, 14 new Guitar Hero games, that we would believe.

  • Rumors: Touch-sensitive Guitar Hero guitar, tons of new Spidey games, Bill Nye and more!

Xbox 360 Fanboy found some super secret info about Microsoft's plans for a Mii-like avatar on the site of market survey firm Intellisponse. The X3F story was posted on NeoGAF, whose members then began messing around with the Intellisponse URL. And that's when Internet Magic happened. A wealth of unannounced Microsoft, Activision, and Disney games were revealed in .swf files containing game descriptions. Some of these are clearly just pitches -- see the five million Spidey games -- but given the evidence of Ultimate Band (which we already knew about), some of them are definitely on the way. There aren't any massive megatons like the Xbox got, but unannounced games are always news! Until they're announced! We're marking it all as rumor for now, because we don't know what's real, what's proposed, and what could be some kind of elaborate trap! The site has since been taken down, but we've got most of the text, and you can fill in the gaps with Joystiq's posts on the subject, as well as the NeoGAF thread. Kotaku has a roundup of the Spidey-related titles. The full list follows after the break. Highlights include a touch-sensitive Guitar Hero World Tour (referred to here as Guitar Hero IV) guitar, a Marvel Ultimate Alliance sequel, a Spidey game built around the Balance Board, and -- perhaps most exciting -- a Bill Nye the Science Guy science minigame collection. Weirdest of all, and least likely to be as exciting as it sounds, is Trioxide, some kind of system for playing Wii, PS3, and 360 games on the PC with their original controllers? Streaming video, maybe?

  • Survey: Tony Hawk to get board peripheral on 360, PS3; new Spider-Man to use Wii Fit board

Sounds like the peripheral geeks at Activision got bored with plastic instruments and decided that balance boards were the wave of the future. The marketing survey scraping continues, with details on two different Activision franchises using two different board peripherals: an as-yet-unnamed Spider-Man title for Wii will support the Wii Fit balance board while Tony Hawk's Adrenaline will use "a new motion sensing board controller."What's most notable about the Tony Hawk title: it's only listed for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC ... meaning, no Wii Fit balance board peripheral. Both titles appear to be designed from the ground up for their respective peripherals, with the Spider-Man game wrapping an action title around foot-based controls. Same rules apply for these two games as with everything scraped today: consider it rumor until Activision says otherwise. These could simply be concepts as opposed to actual games under development.

  • The Ultimate Alliance forms again in 2009

Fans of the latest Marvel dungeon crawler, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, know that a sequel to your beloved game is inbound, however it's going to take a bit longer than you might like. You see, the sequel to the first game isn't going to be on shelves until next year. Here, cry on our shoulder. Go ahead, let it all out!Our cruel overlords at Joystiq seem to think that the new Spider-Man: Web of Shadows game could have something to do with the delay. As for us, well, we're not complaining if the time is put to good use. The first game was a boatload of fun, so we hope the sequel is just as good, if not better.[Via Joystiq]

It seems we'll be donning our tight-fitting Spider-Man costumes and matching cavalier attitudes sooner than expected, as we head off to the store to purchase Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. The humiliation better be worth it this time, Activision! Confirming earlier rumors, the publisher has announced (via IGN) that Spidey's next "free-roaming, open-ended" adventure will be hitting the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Wii, DS, PSP and PC, courtesy of Shaba Games and Treyarch. Not much is known about the title, but the official website hints that you'll be able to influence the game's "direction and outcome" and choose which characters in the Marvel universe to ally yourself with. The central theme seems to be "control," though as the trailer (embedded after the break) rightly points out, we can't know what it really means ... until we lose it.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

  • Spider-Man: Web of Shadows coming to Wii

Keep in mind, this is not the Wii versionTake note, webheads: a new Spidey game is being made for the Wii (along with those other systems nobody cares about). It's called Spider-Man: Web of Shadows and will once again feature the tried-and-true sandbox mechanic of a fully-explorable New York City. Other than that, we know that the game is being worked on by Treyarch and Shaba Games and will feature some kind of system that allows for customizable superpowers. Also, players will have some control in determining whether they want to be the boyscout do-gooder or a more selfish anti-hero type.Perhaps even cooler than the news of there being a new game is word that Activision will be holding auditions for folks to do the voiceover work in the game at their booth at the upcoming New York Comic-Con. The winner will be determined by open voting, which will go down at the game's official website here.

It looks like Surfer Girl may have been right after all. Though Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is obviously a different name than "Red Vs Black" the ideas seem to be the same, and it's quite possible that "Red Vs Black" was just a working title anyway. Regardless, it does feel a bit strange to see a game for the first time thanks to a Gamestop advertisement. We just hope that releasing information this way isn't indicative of the game's quality or market strategy. A Spidey game with no movie ties, focused on the Venom/Spider-Man rivalry could be good, as long as the target is audience isn't in diapers.[Via Joystiq]

  • Rumor: Spider-Man: Web of Shadows being introduced this week

Considering that Spider-Man 3 sold roughly one hojillion copies despite its dubious quality, it's not a huge surprise that Activision wouldn't want to wait for Spider-Man 4 to hit theaters before its next game. First we had the brawling-centric Spider-Man: Friend or Foe and soon, according to Gamervision we'll be playing Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. GV says the info comes from an insider at GameStop, which will reportedly be putting marketing materials up for the game this week. Now, what, exactly is Spider-Man: Web of Shadows? We have no clue. We've heard rumors of a Spidey game subtitled "Red Vs. Black," and if this is that same project we can likely expect some symbiote action and maybe even a visit from Venom. Again though, that's pure conjecture. But it sounds like we might be hearing something more concrete very soon.

Activision's recent conference call had about as many surprises in it as a holiday gift from Grandma. After setting record sales in 2007, both confusing and otherwise, Activision revealed plans for new entries into the Guitar Hero, Spider-Man and Tony Hawk franchises in 2008 as well as their first attempt at the James Bond license, with an adaptation of the latest Bond film, Quantum of Solace, in the pipeline.According to a report in Variety, gamers should mark their calendars for up to three Guitar Hero releases, two add-ons and Guitar Hero IV in the fall, two game adaptations of the Dreamworks film Kung Fu Panda and one for the upcoming Madagascar 2, and new sequels to Tony Hawk, Call of Duty, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Spider-Man and the aforementioned Bond game. In fact, we recommend you keep your 2007 calendars and simply change the 7's to 8's. It would just be easier.[via Joystiq]

Activision's recent conference call didn't consist entirely of gloating about those record holiday-quarter sales, as the publisher also took the opportunity to outline some of its plans for 2008. It seems we're in for quite the party, albeit one where you'll actually remember everybody's name. Guitar Hero? James Bond? Tony Hawk? Spider-Man? Yeah, we've met.According to a Variety report, the aforementioned party will see multiple performances by The Instrument Protagonists, due to promote two Guitar Hero "add-ons" in Spring and a full sequel in Fall. While party animals debate the game tie-ins to animated films Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar 2, suave gentleman will attempt to decrypt James Bond's film adaptation, Quantum of Solace. A roughly equal amount of solace will be found by the comic fans huddled around the punch bowl, as new Spider-Man and Marvel Ultimate Alliance games are expected to knock on the door at some point during the festivities. Finally, don't expect Tony Hawk to be turned away (he's on the guest list), especially since he's bringing his friend ... uh ... Call of Duty? We honestly don't know where we're going with this analogy. [Via The Cut Scene]

Welcome to our weekly feature, Virtually Overlooked, wherein we talk about games that aren't on the Virtual Console yet, but should be. Call it a retro-speculative.I am aware of how terrible licensed games are. This has always been true, from E.T. on. Just about every time a Spider-Man game has come out, I've been suckered into at least renting it (until around Spider-Man 3 this generation -- I'm not stupid.) I'm not like a huge Spidey fan or anything. What keeps me coming back?In my estimation, there is only one important aspect in a Spider-Man game. It's not a variety of missions and objectives. It's not an accurately-modeled city. It's not the number of classic Spidey villains that make their appearance. And it's not the fighting mechanics. The only thing that matters at all can be summed up in this question:Can he swing from a web?

Although we doubt Peter Parker will ditch the day job in order to plug a new kind of pepper spray, we're sure the web slinger has a soft spot for Domonique Torrence's creation. This wrist-worn contraption enables individuals to keep mace within a finger's reach and secured to one's hand even if attacked, and we'd say there's a certain intimidation factor thrown in as an unintended bonus. Reportedly, the device is set to go on sale later this year for $30, but you know that inner superhero will force you to pick up two as you seek to live out those dreams of incapacitating baddies on the streets of New York. Just be careful where you aim, alright? [Via CrunchGear]

Remember that Spider-Man 3 movie that came out a few months ago? Remember how every single platform received a game to coincide with the movie's launch? Well, except one. Sony's very own PSP. Months late, the Spider-Man 3 video game is finally ready to release on the PSP, and it includes a few extras for those that were foolhardy patient enough to wait.Noted as the "first fully-streaming Spider-Man environment for the PSP system," the game now adds an exclusive Conquest mode, where players must complete mission by dawn. If successful, players will earn Hero Points, which allow them to upgrade and customize their Spider-Man skills. The game is supposedly heading to retailers today, albeit amazon.com lists next week as the release date. Honestly, if you've been waiting this long, another week isn't seemingly going to make much of a difference, huh?

The race for PSP Lite is on! And ... Europe wins! The redesigned PSP-2000 will arrive in Europe on September 5th, and will feature two new movie-themed PSP systems to boot. "Simpsons Yellow" and "Spider-man Black and Red." We don't have pictures of these new models quite yet -- but our man in Leipzig should be able to steal a snapshot for you tomorrow. Unfortunately, according to Joystiq, it appears as though The Simpsons model is quite "gaudy."

    07.13.2007

Friend or Foe? Cake or Death? Sadly in this game, you only get to pick friend or foe, there's no cake in here ... although lots of comic book video game "death," which is easily cured by way of the "continue" button, all a part of the "family friendly combat" from Activision. It's hard to see how smashing your opponent into the ground via an overhead web-swing is family friendly, but hey ... to each his or her own.The basic premise is that Spidey has to defeat, and then convert -- via some sort of Scientology-level brainwashing that occurs offscreen -- his foes in order to have them team up with him to defeat a worldwide threat. Which means you can crack Sandman over the head a few times, and then he'll be a playable character soon afterwards. So if you've been itching to play as Doc Ock or The Green Goblin, here's your chance.%Gallery-4805%

Riding off the coattails of Spider-Man 3's massive box office success this weekend (we kid because we love), 2P Start took top honors for this week's best game-related webcomic. What we love most is the comic's simplicity and its decision to avoid any and all text.Ctrl+Alt+Del made second place, while the first Penny Arcade (about Spider-Man 3: The Game) and Dueling Analogs duke it out for third place. Thanks to everyone who voted and be sure to let us know of any gaming comics you stumble upon this week!
