We're not sure if it was brilliant or just really, really annoying, but Ubisoft has finally doled out a trailer for Splinter Cell: Conviction piecemeal on a teaser site for the game. There's now a new (final?) portion and it's just as vague as the previous iterations. So, Sam's been wronged, and now he's going to wreck shop on the parties responsible. If you need a slightly lengthier version of that same short story, click away.

We mentioned this earlier, but we thought you might like some more details. So, odds are we won't be seeing you at E3 (you'd recognize us by our rugged good looks and sun-bronzed skin), but that doesn't mean you have to miss out on the feeling of being there. When you're not reading our own earth-shattering, up-to-the-minute coverage, Ubisoft is apparently going to be streaming its content directly to you. As we saw here in a teaser vid for the coverage, it looks like we'll all be laying eyes on Splinter Cell: Conviction, Assassin's Creed 2, No More Heroes 2 and RUSE. Oh AND JOEL McHALE.

We still have no idea why it's taken Sam Fisher so long to return to us, but at least now we have a better idea of when he'll be back. Ubisoft narrowed the release date for Splinter Cell: Conviction to Q3 of this fiscal year (between November 2009 and December 2009) in a conference call this morning. We also got narrower release windows for games like Assassin's Creed 2 (Q3), Red Steel 2 (Q3) and Ghost Recon 4 (Q4). You can check out the full list right here.

"I lost my daughter. I shot my best friend."Boo hoo, Sam Fisher. Are you going to get some black lipstick now to match your totally emo beard? In all seriousness, though, it appears the long-delayed Splinter Cell Conviction might, y'know, actually come out. Ubisoft has opened a second teaser site for the game, promising even more updates on May 20th and May 28th. This is great news for the Joystiq staff, as we've been relegated to using the same screenshot for nearly every Splinter Cell story for the last two years. Finally! Something new to Photoshop.

With Splinter Cell Conviction apparently due by Christmas, Ubisoft has booted up the hype machine for the game with a new teaser site located here. There's not much to see: a weird image; a Third Eschelon logo; the word "vomacoifinnocnt." It's all very mysterious.OK, now that we've given you the news, can we just say that it's wayyyy too late in the game for a teaser site? We've been hearing about the frigging thing for 17 years, Ubisoft, you're really not gonna drop a new screen? Are there limits to the secrecy? It's going to be on store shelves rather than at the end of a globe-spanning treasure hunt, right?[Via 1UP]

Hey, look. It's Splinter Cell Conviction. Where have you been? Ah, still not ready to talk about that, huh? Well it sounds like you're due by this Christmas, according to Ubisoft's latest quarterly report. The report includes the company's CEO, Yves Guillemot, hyping "this Christmas" as the one to offer "one of the industry's most ambitious games line-ups which will include Assassin's Creed 2, James Cameron's Avatar, Splinter Cell Conviction, Rabbids Go Home and Red Steel 2."If true, we'll no doubt be hearing a lot more about Sam Fisher's latest adventure at some point within the next eight months. With no Ubidays happening this year, we're counting on a big reveal at E3 -- and about time, too.Source - Ubisoft's full year 2008-2009 sales (Warning: PDF link)

In a recently released Ubisoft sales report, the company revealed its plans for its upcoming fiscal year 2009, which begins in April and ends in March 2010. Seven franchises are to be launched, including the sequel to Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell Conviction, Anno and a new entry in the Ghost Recon series. Four licensed games are in the works, including James Cameron's Avatar. Finally, the company expects to launch three new brands and expand its casual games library. Of the seven franchise titles, only the four above are explicitly named, leaving the rest a mystery. We're going to hope, along with Joystiq, that one of those is Beyond Good & Evil 2.

Straight out of Ubisoft's Q308 earnings call comes news that Assassin's Creed 2 – the not-so-secret sequel to the 6 million plus selling megahit – will be silently leaping onto consoles "by March 2010" according to the Twitter feed of gaming gournalist Geoff Keighley Ubisoft's third quarter earnings report.Ubi's forecasting for its 2009 fiscal year – running from April 2009 through March 2010 – takes "into account ... 7 franchise titles" including Assassin's Creed 2, the mysterious (still Xbox exclusive?) Splinter Cell Conviction, and Ghost Recon. Some quick finger-based math tells us that leaves four unannounced "franchise titles." Beyond Good and Evil 2, maybe? Red Steel 2, perhaps? Throw us a bone here!Update: Ubi's CEO Yves Guillemot "mentioned a game that [he] wasn't supposed to mention" during today's conference call. Guillemot blurted out, "We have lots of products coming for the Wii next [fiscal] year. We have Red Steel" before apologizing for his indiscretion. We imagine a room full of PR reps rolling their eyes. Sacrebleu!PDF – Ubisoft Q308 earnings report

  • Retail Rumor: Splinter Cell Conviction in February

By now one should know that retailers' expected release dates for upcoming games that don't have official release dates aren't all that reliable. But after searching the internets and coming across the way long delayed (yet rather anticipated) Splinter Cell Conviction popping up at retailers with a similar February release, well ... we just had to share. Online retailers including Amazon.com and Gamestop have Splinter Cell Conviction posted with an expected release date of February 2, 2009. Though, the February release doesn't quite gel with Ubisoft's earlier fiscal talk that made it clear Conviction wouldn't be available until April 2009 at the earliest. So, February 2nd doesn't seem all that likely, unless retailers know something we don't. And if that's the case, we're pointing an angry finger at Ubisoft.[Thanks, Jason]

  • Rumor: Splinter Cell gameplay and visuals have evolved

Remember in 1996 when the Xbox 360 exclusive Splinter Cell: Conviction was announced. We may have the date wrong but it was a long time ago, that we know for sure. Just when we were giving up home on Sam's return a report by Videogaming247 indicates that Conviction, which was pushed into 2009, has undergone a handful of changes.According to the site an Ubisoft community development manager said Conviction is "certainly not canned," but that "the gameplay has evolved a lot" and "the visual direction is simply much better." Considering Sam has been dark since his Xbox 360 debut in October 2006 we'd hope the title was experiencing a substantial upgrade to compete with other high-profile stealth action games that will not be named. We'd also like to think that Sam has returned to his sneaky Third Echelon roots instead of going all "emo" on us but only Tom Clancy knows for sure. Sadly, a name cannot speak and the artist formerly known as Tom Clancy doesn't make the rules anymore -- you know, since he sold his moniker.

Just as we were starting to hate him just a little less, there's a chance "emo" Sam Fisher, star of the coming-someday Splinter Cell: Conviction, could be on his way out. A report by Videogaming247 indicates that the game, previously pushed into 2009, is undergoing some cosmetic changes. As in losing the man-mascara?The site quotes an Ubisoft community development manager as saying that the game is "certainly not canned," but that "the gameplay has evolved a lot" and "the visual direction is simply much better." Given the game's absence from this year's E3, we figured a considerable amount of re-tooling was in progress. The source says that when we see Conviction again, "it'll be worth the wait." It'd better be – our beards and hair are starting to look scragglier than Sam's up there.

  • Rep: Ironside not out of Splinter Cell: Conviction

Aside from David Hayter and Charles Martinet, we can't really think of a voice-over actor more closely tied to his video game alter-ego than Michael Ironside and Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher. So it brought us no small amount of consternation to hear rumors that not only may Ironside be out for Splinter Cell: Conviction but (even worse) that the cause was prima donna behavior. Thankfully, the Fisherists were there to ease our fears, tracking down Ironside's manager David Ginsberg who said "The truth is that Ubisoft is still working on the script/game and that there has been no conversations about Michael as of yet, casting may not even begin until later this year." He also (shockingly) went on to say that Ironsides is a real prince of a guy, ask anybody. So, for now at least, our hope for an appropriately gruff Sam lives on.

There were rumors floating around and now we can finally confirm the news. Splinter Cell: Conviction is delayed once again. Gasp!In their just released first quarter fiscal report, Ubisoft made mention that Splinter Cell: Conviction is still alive (phew!) and that it has been delayed once again (aww, shucks) possibly into 2010 (wah?). According to Ubi, they've pushed back its release to "bolster the line-up for fiscal 2009-10", meaning that the earliest we'll see Sam Fisher and hear his new voice will be April 2009. We've made the executive decision to place Conviction alongside Alan Wake in the 360's exclusive vaporware catalog.[Via Joystiq]

No, no, no, don't cry, Sam! Oh, now look, you've ruined your mascara. It appears emo Sam Fisher is going to be sitting on the sidelines a little longer as Ubisoft announced today that Splinter Cell: Conviction is being delayed until the company's next fiscal year. For those who don't tell time through corporate fiscal calendars, that means Conviction won't be released until after April of 2009.Rumors of Conviction's delay have been floating around for months, kicked into overdrive by the game's no-show at Ubidays and E3. Back in May, the development team said it would be showing the game in "forthcoming months." Well, there's still Tokyo and Leipzig ...

  • Rumor: Voice of Splinter Cell axed due to ego and cash demands

    06.17.2008

In an update to their insider report about good old Michael Ironside being axed by Ubisoft as the voice actor of Sam Fisher for the upcoming Splinter Cell: Conviction, Sarcastic Gamer is reporting on the supposed reason for Ubisoft's axing ways. According to Sarcastic Gamer's internal Conviction source, Ironside was let go because "he was getting to way too egotistical about the project and [was] extremely difficult to work with." The insider also mentioned that the other reason for the bad blood was because Ironside "was also asking for a sh*t load of money." Again, we aren't certain if these reasons are why Ironside was let go or even if Ironside has indeed been axed from Conviction seeing that Ubi hasn't said a word regarding the rumor. Lesson learned though, don't have a huge ego, don't demand lots of money and be a "yes man" and you'll get far in the voice acting business.

  • Rumor: Ironside no longer voicing Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher

There's an enormous void in our brains where Splinter Cell: Conviction should be. It wasn't long ago that the Xbox 360-exclusive spy simulator used to occupy a significant chunk of the quadrant reserved for games being released in 2007 but, after several increasingly vague reports – not to mention the game's total absence at the recent Ubidays event – we're having a hard time remembering it ... this was the one where Sam Fisher goes totally emo, right?Well, he was totally emo last time we saw him but who knows what state the game's gravelly voiced protagonist is in now. If a rumor on Sarcastic Gamer is to be believed, the hero's distinctive voice – heretofore provided by star of stage and screen and Scanners, Michael "Ironside" Ironside – may be replaced for this latest version with who the hell knows. We've put our feelers out but, as long as we've got you all here, let's do some brainstorming. We all realize David Hayter will be missing those Solid Snake checks pretty soon and, assuming this rumor is true for just 7 seconds, Ubisoft may need a leading man('s voice) pretty soon. David, Ubisoft. Ubisoft, David. Imagine it: Sam! SAM! SAAAAMMMMMMM!

An interesting rumor coming from our chums over at Sarcastic Gamer tells us that, according to their "people", they've been informed that voice actor Michael Ironside (the iconic voice behind Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher) has been axed and will not voice Fisher in the upcoming release Conviction. Sarcastic Gamer's tipster didn't give any reason for Ironside's dismissal, but we have a feeling that, if this turns out to be true, the almighty dollar would be to blame. Let's just hope this rumor ends up being hogwash, because we think we can all agree that Sam Fisher isn't Sam Fisher without Ironside behind the mic. Ubisoft, with fury in our eyes and fists clenched, we're warning you. Don't you screw Conviction up like this.

And the Splinter Cell Conviction delay rumor-mill keeps on grinding. The latest non-conclusive statement about the possibility of a Conviction delay was made on the official Ubisoft forums in the form of an open letter from the development team. The group says that development is continuing well and they'll start showing the game in the "forthcoming months."Rumors of Splinter Cell Conviction's possible late 2009 -10 delay began after an article was written in Xbox World 360. At the time, Ubisoft just made a "no comment." Then when the game didn't get shown at UbiDays, the publisher danced around the issue, but stuck with a release window of this fiscal year (April '08 - March '09). Well, E3 is in July -- also known as a "forthcoming month" -- and we'll be sure to pay attention if Splinter Cell Conviction makes an appearance.

Ubisoft is being very cloak and dagger about the status of Splinter Cell Conviction after its no-show at Ubidays. The publisher tells CVG that the time frame for Conviction is this fiscal year, which would be sometime before April '09; meanwhile, Ubisoft tells Eurogamer that the team is currently "polishing" the title, but wouldn't give a time frame for any further Conviction information.Ubisoft maintains that rumors of Conviction's delay until late 2009, or possibly 2010, are purely speculative. After a much too long hiatus, the rumor mill is back to its rumor mill ways and brings us word that Ubisoft's Splinter Cell Conviction has been delayed ... into 2009 ... or 2010 ... GASP!According to CVG, the latest issue of Xbox World 360 reports that Ubisoft Montreal has gone "back to the drawing board" in regards to Conviction's development after realizing how outdated its gameplay mechanics really were in comparison to Ubisoft's own Assassin's Creed. But for now, the long, long, long delay is just a rumor.
