We thought the Sprint Mogul was a little bit of alright, but do the 'nets agree? By and large, yeah, it seems the bottom line is that this is the must-have upgrade for PPC-6700 owners. Mobile Tech Review points out that an MMS client is notably missing and picture quality on the 2 megapixel camera could be better, but hey, it's still an improvement over the Apache's 1.3 megapixel unit. Boy Genius Report found that the ridges on the phone's posterior were a little funky, too; just like the Mogul's crazy bright yellow UI, it's probably an acquired taste.[Via Pocket PC Thoughts]Read - Gear Diary ("...leaps and bounds above the PPC-6700 that it replaces...")Read - Boy Genius Report ("...the device is a pleasure to use...")Read - Phone Scoop ("... flashier design, updated operating and higher resolution camera...")Read - My iTablet (3.75 / 5 stars, "...a worthy upgrade from the PPC-6700...")Read - Mobile Tech Review (4 / 5 stars, "A very strong offering from Sprint, and a worthy, if not overdue, successor to the PPC-6700")

For our Mobile squad, no smartphone launch is complete until we've touched it, analyzed it, and -- knowing our butterfingered selves -- dropped it on a concrete surface (just kidding, our Mobile editors would sacrifice life and limb for the safety of a handset). But when said smartphone happens to be a frickin' CDMA device from HTC... well, that's like a once (or twice) in a lifetime event. Head on over to Mobile for our first impressions of Sprint's Mogul by HTC with a full gallery to boot. Heck, it's almost as good as actually buying one!

Known as the Titan, the PPC-6800, and the XV6800 in its various forms, Sprint's Mogul from HTC represents arguably the most anticipated piece of CDMA hardware so far this year. Why? Well, for starters, its direct predecessor -- the PPC-6700 "Apache" -- isn't getting any younger. Don't get us wrong, the PPC-6700 was a well-loved device that held its own for a good long while, but let's be honest: aerial antennas and Windows Mobile 5 are getting a little passé (to put it lightly). We've had the good fortune to be able to spend a few quality minutes with a production Mogul this weekend, so let's have a closer look, shall we?%Gallery-4052%

    06.15.2007

Feeling a bit nervous that you may not have won our first Samsung m610 for Sprint giveaway? No worries -- we're back with number two. Among the most lustworthy devices in Sprint's lineup, the m610 flip takes its cue from the Ultra Edition series and clocks in at a mere 11.9mm thick -- and with a QVGA display, 2 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, and EV-DO data, the beauty's more than skin deep, too. Have a crack at it, will ya?A few rules (yeah, there are always rules): You may only enter this specific contest once. If you enter this contest more than once you'll be automatically disqualified and barred from all future giveaways. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) In other words, be careful when commenting and don't submit more than once, ok? You may enter our other EngMob relaunch contests, but you can't win more than once; if you happen to win more than once (which is pretty unlikely, but still) we'll ask you to choose just one of your prizes. The prize is open to US entrants only. Hey, it's a US phone, you couldn't do anything with it anyway. Contest is open until 11:59pm EDT on Friday, June 22nd. We'll be shipping all the phones to winners once all the relaunch giveaway contests are over. (Yeah, we know it bites to have to wait, but dems the breaks!) Thanks and good luck to everyone! Have a look at our other contests, too, before it's too late: Samsung m610 (the first one), Sanyo M1

Today we've got another Samsung m610 for Sprint that we'd like to part with. Not because we don't like it -- quite the contrary, in fact -- we'd just rather see it in one of our lucky readers' hands. Go check it out!Have a look at our other contests, too, before it's too late: Samsung m610 (the first one), Sanyo M1

Motorola's iDEN / CDMA hybrid handsets are starting to get a little fancy, it seems. The new ic902 seems to offer up the best of both worlds for the uncompromising push-to-talk junkie, combining features like Power Vision (read: EV-DO rev. 0), healthy QVGA primary and 160 x 120 external color displays, integrated GPS, microSD memory expansion, Bluetooth, music player (sans external controls, it seems), and a 2 megapixel camera into a 0.87 inch, 4.8 ounce form. Grab it starting today online and starting next month in retail locations for $300 on a two-year agreement or $490 contract-free.[Via Phone Scoop]Update: Seems the media controls are on the phone's side. Silly iDEN, always doing things just a little differently! [Thanks, Dan]

  • Sprint Nextel still cleaning up merger mess, buys another affiliate

Amazingly, Sprint's still trying to keep pace with scrappy regional affiliates miffed in the aftermath of its merger with Nextel; in many cases, the clear-cut violations of the non-compete clauses in place with the regionals have left the company with no option but to buy them. Latest in the affiliate roundup is Northern PCS Services in a deal valued at $312.5 million, ending the war of words (and lawyers) that presumably would've ended with an even larger payout for the affiliate after years of drawn-out courtroom proceedings. Though Sprint's gotta feel good about putting another looming drama behind them, iPCS is still out there lying in wait; no indication yet on whether Sprint's feeling a buyout there, too. Look for the Northern deal to close in Q3.

How does a full gigabyte of internal Flash sound? Maybe throw in stereo Bluetooth, EV-DO data, a purty QVGA display and external music controls, and, well, you've got yourself a contender. Sprint has hooked us up with a Sanyo M1 to pass on to one lucky (hopefully music-loving) commenter, so might we suggest you get on that?A few rules (yeah, there are always rules): You may only enter this specific contest once. • BlackBerry 8830 hitting Sprint next month?

This document sure seems to think so. The world-ready variant of RIM's BlackBerry 8800 series -- sporting both CDMA / EV-DO and GSM radios -- saw a recent launch on Verizon, and seeing how these two carriers like (need?) to one-up each other, a July launch makes perfect sense. Looks like the device is pretty much the same as Verizon's variant (Sprint even says right in the slide that price and plans will be "competitive with VZW") though the carrier is touting that its global roaming service will be more user-friendly than Verizon's, offering a single phone number with unified calling and texting.[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

After a day to look back and quietly reflect on all the great hardware it'd given away recently, Engadget Mobile's back in true contest form today with a Samsung m610 for Sprint! Reminiscent of Samsung's high-end Ultra Edition line, the 11.9mm thick m610 packs a serious punch (think 2 megapixels, microSD, and 3G data) without letting out any notches in the belt. Feeling cheritable? So are we -- yet again -- so this should work out swimmingly. Motorola's red MOTORAZR V3m was created in collaboration with (PRODUCT) RED to help fight AIDS in Africa -- and, coincidentally, to help fight boring-looking cellphones with a bright red shell that you're not likely to miss. It's offered on Sprint and features a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, EV-DO data, and microSD expansion.A few rules (yeah, there are always rules): You may only enter this specific contest once. • HTC Mogul to hit Sprint June 18?

    06.05.2007

The HTC Mogul's (aka PPC-6800's) release date on Sprint has been about as solid as a Vista (or Leopard) beta; first we heard May (and we all know how that turned out), then we heard October -- now we're hearing June. Yeah, June '07, as in "this month." That's a nice little surprise, is it not? Of course, dates are always subject to change, but seeing how we're spying some official-looking material now touting June 18 as the date (with an EV-DO rev. A upgrade dropping this fall), it's promising. MSRP for the device clocks in at $549.99, with a two-year saving you $150 to bring it down to $399.99. As expected, Windows Mobile 6 is on board -- thank goodness -- though it appears that retail channels won't get it until nearly a month later on July 16. Until then, we guess the website's the way to go.[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

  • Slide deck surfaces for Sprint's HTC Mogul

    06.04.2007

We admit it's nowhere near as cool as a PPC-6800 / Mogul launch (which as far as we can tell is still months away), but hey, we'll take what we can get. This slide deck -- or perhaps "decklet" is a better term, seeing how it's only two slides -- found its way onto PDAPhoneHome.com with a couple large, lovely pictures of what promises to be Sprint's flagship smart device when it finally hits stores. The launch delay has been attributed to the decision to drop Windows Mobile 6 Professional on it right out of the gate rather than offer an upgrade down the road, a theory that seems to be validated by the obvious presence of Microsoft's latest release in the pics. Otherwise, the specs on the second slide are pretty much what we expected: EV-DO rev. A upgradeability, a 416MHz core, 256MB onboard storage, and 64MB RAM.[Thanks, Brad]

  • Red UpStage on June 18?

Carriers seem to have discovered that adding colors to a phone's palette is sorta like a free ticket to a few hundred thousand sales. How do you explain the Chocolate's diverse rainbow, after all? Sources report that Sprint is liking June 18 as the date to launch its fascinating UpStage dual-sided music phone from Samsung in red. Whether this'll be branded as a (PRODUCT) RED promotion, we're not sure -- but our guess is that it won't be since Motorola seems to enjoy a tight relationship with the organization. Either way, we've gotta admit that it looks pretty nice.[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

We're giving folks one more opportunity to win Sprint's double-sided wonder, the UpStage from Samsung. Music is the focus here with an entire side dedicated to a rather normal-looking (by DMP standards) music player, while the other gets a decidedly phone-centric focus. Amazingly, it all gets packed into a packaging measuring 9 millimeters thick (and change) and includes stereo Bluetooth and microSD expansion.
