  • Okoro's OMS-ZX100 Media PC does Blu-ray, HD DVD and SSD

    Okoro Media Systems has been offering up well-spec'd HTPCs for quite some time, but it has finally seen fit to jump on the flash-based storage bandwagon. The firm's new ZX series of Extreme Digital Entertainment Systems gets going with the OMS-ZX100, which comes standard with a 32GB SSD (for the OS and such) and a 1TB HDD for media storage. Moreover, you'll find a 3.0GHz Core 2 Extreme QX6850 processor, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, NVIDIA's 256MB GeForce 8600 GT graphics card, Blu-ray / HD DVD playback and your choice of "any automotive color" on the chassis. 'Tis a shame it costs $5,995 to even join the ZX100 club, but look to spend even more if you're hankering for a built-in CableCARD tuner and WiFi adapter.

  • Super Talent ships "world's thinnest" 256GB SSD, still too thick for us

    We've learned to be extra cautious whenever some company tosses out that "world's thinnest" claim, and while this one isn't an outright lie, it's not exactly as impressive as Super Talent would have you believe. Yeah, the outfit's 256GB FSD56GC25H SSD actually is the slimmest on the market today at this capacity, but the 12.5-millimeter height makes it incompatible with a slew of laptops that can only handle drives that are 9.5-millimeters thick. Nevertheless, those with the room to spare can look forward to 0.1-millisecond access times, 65MB/sec sequential read speeds and 50MB/sec sequential write speeds (maximums), and a lightweight aluminum enclosure. Per usual, pricing information is available only upon request -- but no, it won't be cheap.

  • Seagate warns it might sue SSD makers for patent infringement

    It may already be dipping its own toes into the wild new world of solid state hard drives, but Seagate apparently isn't so keen on others ditching traditional hard drives, and it's now indicating that it might even sue 'em if SSD really starts to catch on. That word comes from none other than Seagate CEO Bill Watkins, who told Fortune recently that he's "convinced" that SSD makers like Samsung and Intel are violating some of Seagate's patents (as well as Western Digital's) that deal with the way a "storage device communicates with a computer." Somewhat curiously though, especially given Seagate's own plans, Watkins doesn't see SSD catching on in a big way anytime soon, saying that, "realistically, I just don't see the flash notebook sell." As Fortune points out, however, if prices keep dropping at the rate they have been, that "sell" could soon be a whole lot easier to make, which would also make that lawsuit quite a bit more likely.[Via Slashdot]

    Our week o' Dell scoops continues with what Dell calls its "mainstream" and "essential" series of Latitude E-series laptops. While the enterprise-ready, mainstream series packs just about everything (and more) that you could hope for in a balanced spec-for-size lappie, the essential series is only essential if you're on a tight budget and just can't live without the comparatively low-end chub. The 15.4-inch E6500 and 14.1-inch E6400 models will replace Dell's D830 and D630 whereas the "essential" 15.4-inch E5500 and 14.1-inch E5400 carry on the low-end tradition of Dell's D531 and D530. With any luck, these will be Dell's first Montevina / Centrino 2 class machines if they all hit the targeted June release date as planned. AMD fans will see the E5500a and E5400a configurations at about the same time. So what can you expect under the hood? Well, just look at the 5.1-pound E6500 which reads like a suit's, geek fantasy: UWB, Bluetooth 2.1, mobile broadband Integrated GPS, yes GPS New 84WHr slice batteries for "all day" computing LED backlighting, 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, discrete nVIDIA graphics and DisplayPort out Hard, Hybrid, and Solid State disk drive options with eSATA jack for more Optional camera and mic Plenty of security options including contact-less smart cards and encrypted hard disks Time to pad those budgets a bit, eh CIOs?   • Dell denies 20 - 30% return rates for SSD-laptops

    Alright Avian Securities, looks like you might have some explaining to do. Dell claims that the 20 to 30% failure and return rates for SSD laptops cited by Avian's report "don't even vaguely resemble what's happening in our business." Dell says it wasn't contacted in the study, and that "global reliability data shows that SSD drives are equal to or better than traditional hard disk drives we've shipped." The company says that return rates are "are in line with our expectations for new technology," and an "order of magnitude" better than what is being reported. To be fair to Avian, the original report cited an unnamed "large computer manufacturer," which some in the press assumed meant Dell, thought it was never said explicitly. It looks like we're going to need some more hard facts from both sides to get the true picture of SSD reliability and customer satisfaction, but for now let's nobody panic.

  • Consumers returning SSD laptops in droves?

    Bad news for those banking on SSD as the savior of all things laptop. While the drives have been proven to improve battery life and speed start times, other drawbacks have buyers thinking second thoughts about the major premium for laptops like the MacBook Air and Lenovo X300 with SSD -- about $1000 in the case of those two. A new study shows that flash-based laptops are being returned at a rate of 10 to 20 percent for technical failure, compared to the 1 to 2 percent of regular laptop returns due to HDD issues. Perhaps it should be expected from an emerging tech like SSD, but consumers certainly aren't expected to enjoy it. Other consumers are sending 'em back just due to lackluster performance -- particular applications like streaming video and, strangely, Microsoft Outlook, see a performance hit from SSD. Hopefully speedier drives will address this latter problem, but how about everybody cuts their prices in half and we just forget the whole thing, eh?

  • Toshiba's Dynabook SS RX1: world's first laptop with 128GB SSD

    Your 64GB SSD getting you down? Right, you should be so lucky. Regardless, Toshiba just updated their 12.1-inch Dynabook SS RX1 in Japan with a new 128GB SSD option. Build RX1/TAE bundles 128GB of solid state disk with internal, KDDI EV-DO data module, 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo U7600 processor, 2GB of memory, Intel 945GMS Express graphics, a 1,280 x 800 pixel panel resolution, and choice of 6.2 hour or 12.5 hour batteries. How much? Try something like ¥400,000 or more than $4,000 when it pops for Japanese retail next month. [Via Akihabara News]

  • InnoDisk intros 128GB FiD 2.5-inch SATA 10000 SSD

    If you were impressed with OCZ's latest 2.5-inch SSDs, chances are you'll be thoroughly enamored by InnoDisk's FiD 2.5-inch SATA 10000. 'Course, it's certainly not the first 128GB solid state disc we've seen, but it does boast a rugged metal enclosure and promises sustained read / write rates of up to 110Mbps / 90Mbps. Reportedly, this SLC NAND flash drive will see its way out to samplers later this month, and it should start shipping in volume sometime during Q2.[Via FarEastGizmos]

  • OCZ announces 32, 64GB SATA II SSDs

    32 and 64GB capacities aren't all that impressive when it comes to SATA II 2.5-inch solid state drives, but OCZ's new devices do claim 120MBps read and 100MBps write speeds which would put it up there on the ranks. Unfortunately, OCZ neglected to clue anyone in on price or release date for these puppies.

  • Intel on its way to making consumer SSD drives. Yes, still.

    SSDs definitely seem like the boldest new frontier in computer electronics these days, and Intel, which lately has been making some solid developments in the NAND memory department, is apparently still on track to do that whole SSD thing they've been talking about. According to CNET, Intel's NAND marketing manager Troy Winslow supposedly said the company would be coming up with some 80 - 160GB capacity drives in Q2, and 128GB capacity drives in Q3. Sounds to us like someone got something wrong, but there's no denying Intel and its respective partners Micron and STMicroelectronics are out to make a dent in the hard drive market of tomorrow.

  • Samsung intros Spinpoint MP2, reiterates plans for 256GB SSD in 2009

    Not quite a year after Samsung joyfully brought the Spinpoint MP1 into the world, the MP2 has arrived to rightfully take the baton. According to Sammy, the 2.5-inch drive is best suited in desktop replacement lappies, workstations and blade servers, and it's said to provide quicker read / write speeds than the 500GB M6 announced at CES. The 7,200 RPM drive is slated to land at $299, but an 80GB version will be available for a bit less cash, too. In less sluggish news, the firm has also restated its plans to deliver a 256GB SSD by 2009, and if you were looking for even more bulletin board material, Jim Elliott, vice president of memory marketing for Samsung Semiconductor, proclaimed that it was "trying to double SSD capacity every 12 months."   • Samsung puts the kibosh on SSD reliability worries

    If you're one of the (apparently) many out there scared half to death not over what's residing in your closet at night, but that your recently purchased SSD will wear itself out in no time flat, here's a little reassurance. According to Michael Yang, flash marketing manager at Samsung, a flash device rated at 100,000 write cycles can write 100,000 times "to every single (memory) cell within the device," and of course, it won't continuously write to the same cell over and over thanks to a process dubbed wear leveling. In case you still needed a tad more evidence, he also stated that "a pattern could be perpetually repeated in which a 64GB SSD is completely filled with data, erased, filled again, then erased again every hour of every day for years, and the user still wouldn't reach the theoretical write limit." So, now that we've had that cleared up, why not tell us more about those 250GB MLC-based SSDs that could land before 2009 dawns?

  • Mtron announces a 1.8-inch 128GB SSD

    We've already seen a couple 2.5-inch SSDs hit 128GB, but Mtron, our new favorite crazy storage vendor, has just announced a 1.8-inch 128GB SSD. That's the same size as the drives in the MacBook Air, Latitude XT, and Lenovo X300 -- and since drive height isn't as closely related to storage capacity for SSDs, look for 1.8-inch SSDs to become the new standard in most new laptops as capacities increase and prices fall. Of course, "prices fall" is the operative phrase here -- Mtron's 1.8-inch 128GB disk will probably set you back some $1600 when it ships in April.   • CompactFlash-based SSDs get tested

    You know how much we love SSDs around here, but getting one the legit way currently involves poking a rather large hole in your wallet -- so we were pretty interested to see how a jury-rigged SSD built using that CompactFlash-to-SATA adapter we spotted a while back would hold up. While we probably would have sprung for something a little larger than the 4GB drives used in the test, the results are pretty encouraging: DIY SSD drives were overall faster than the 1.8-inch traditional drive found in the MacBook Air, and even a little faster than the VAIO TZ's 64GB SSD. The drives were bested by a 7200rpm 2.5-inch drive and a 128GB SATA SSD, as you'd expect, but what we weren't expecting was the negligible hit on power consumption -- it looks like SSDs really don't use less power, as the unchanged battery life of the SSD MacBook Air hinted. Still -- you know we want one. Check out all the results and a little howto action after the break.

    While Everex continues to bungle the launch of the CloudBook, Paul C. Kim is already spilling details on the next iteration, providing an already troubled launch with problems of Osborne proportions. Due to be released later this year, the upcoming CloudBooks should feature an SSD option, "female colors," and possibly even a 22-inch option. Also under consideration is mobile broadband. Already announced were the touchscreen and 9-inch versions which we should be seeing in a couple months -- leaving you absolutely zero reason to buy a CloudBook now unless you've already been suckered into pre-ordering one; which it seems everyone has already done, so we suppose the point is moot.

  • MacBook Air with SSD tested: performance boost nowhere to be found

    We've definitely been curious about the difference sticking an SSD would make in the MacBook Air's otherwise average performance and battery life, and it looks like the answer is a resounding "meh." The crew at Ars Technica ran an SSD-equipped Air through a battery of tests, and found that while the increased random disk read / write speeds and slightly faster processor led to a minor overall speedup and less pinwheeling, the dramatically lower sequential read/ write speeds of the SSD made things essentially a wash. What's worse, battery life -- where the SSD should have shone -- was decidedly mediocre. Ars was able to coax the SSD model in to lasting 29 minutes longer than the HDD version they tested, but on average the SSD-equipped MBA didn't have the juice to last any longer than the HDD model, getting to about 2 hours and 31 minutes before petering out. All said, Ars says the extra $1300 for the SSD MacBook Air just isn't worth it -- but c'mon, you know that's not stopping the people who are buying Airs in the first place.[Via Digg]

  • BiTMICRO keeps it real, unveils 1.6TB Ultra320 SCSI SSD

    One would think that after pushing out an 832GB SSD at CES, the mad scientists at BiTMICRO could afford some time off. Nevertheless, those same gurus have apparently been burning that midnight oil and today are announcing the world's first Ultra320 SCSI SSD to break the terabyte barrier. The E-Disk Altima E3S320 solid state flash disk arrives in a 3.5-inch form factor and houses some 1.6TB of storage space. Additionally, it promises sustained data transfer rates of up to 230MB/sec, and just in case the aforementioned model is just too capacious for you, the outfit will be shipping versions as small as 16GB in Q3 of this year. No word on how many houses you'll need to liquidate in order to take one home, however.

    How do 200MBps reads and 100MBps writes in a storage device sound to you? Pretty sweet if you ask us. That's the upper spec for Micron's new highspeed 8Gb (Gigabit not Gigabyte, kids) SLC NAND co-developed with Intel on a 50-nm processes node. Once slapped together in an SSD, you can expect performance to easily outshine any existing SSD or mechanical drive on the market while easily kicking the SSD bugbear -- random read/writes -- to the curb. The rub, of course, is that SLC NAND is more expensive than MLC so you can expect to pay dearly for that performance. Watch for the speedy Micron flash to pop in cellphones, camcorders, SSDs (and pretty much every portable consumer electronics device out there) sometime in the second half of 2008 -- sampling now to manufacturers.

    We wouldn't normally get excited about two more random HP enterprise desktops, but you know how we love all things SSD, and if the HP Compaq dc7800 Ultra-Slim Desktop with SSD lights a fire in corporate IT departments, sales volumes may actually drive the price of SSD units down. So, uh, wow, check out this hot new HP Compaq dc7800 Ultra-Slim Desktop! Man, can you imagine how worker productivity would increase due to its speedy 2.3GHz Core 2 Duo processor? And how many more charts and folders you could fit on a desk thanks to its 46 percent smaller footprint? And let's not even talk about the energy savings due to its compliance with the latest Energy Star guidelines -- just TOO exciting. Truly the progressive, "with-it" large enterprise can't afford NOT to purchase the $1,258 HP Compaq dc7800 Ultra-Slim Desktop with SSD in large enough volumes to affect the commodity pricing of SSD storage. No sir! There is also a $579 HP Compaq dc5800 Business PC that has a regular hard drive, pictured after the break. It's pretty much the same, but instead of productivity apps, it, uh, only runs MySpace. Yeah, that's what we heard for real.

  • Toshiba adds 3G to the featherweight Portege R500

    Forget the MacBook Air: those folks seeking the absolute lightest notebooks on the planet know that Windows machines are still the only way to go, and Toshiba has proven that once again with an official 3G upgrade to the already impressive Portege R500. According to Akihabara News (which seems to be a little confused concerning the model number here), two new 12.1-inch, HSDPA-equipped configurations will be available this month: the ultra-lightweight (and ultra-pricey) R500-11J, highlighted by a 64GB SSD drive and impressive 1.72-pound package, and the cheaper, optical drive-packing R500-11I, which features the same 1.20GHz U7600 CPU and 2GB of RAM, but introduces a less appealing 120GB HDD. Pricing should be around €2,500 ($3,658) for the high-end 11J and €2,050 ($3,000 even) for the heavier 11I.
