Every Tuesday think "T" for Turpster and take the "a" in "day", capitalise it, remove the little bit in the middle, turn it upside down and you get a "V". Put the two together and you'll have TV for TurpsterVision -- the best Internet video podcast on Massively! (Never mind that business about it being the only video podcast on Massively...) Some people are born entertainers, some people are born story tellers, and others are born reviewers. I'd like to think that in this Episode of TurpsterVision that I prove that I am the illegitimate love child in their sexy, secret, and most definitely sordid, love orgies! Join us after the break to find out if Turpster's heritage is no longer in doubt!

  • SWG's producer talks Chapter 9 testing, hints at Chapter 10

The ongoing quest for more content in the galaxy Far, Far Away continues, with producer Lorin 'DeadMeat' Jameson dropping a production letter / state of the game address into the official Star Wars Galaxies forums. Jameson is enthusiastic about the upcoming release of Chapter 9, which entered public testing this past Friday. He invites players to fully test the patch, giving special notice to the much anticipated Exan Kun instance (which will feature some really fantastic rewards), the storyteller blueprint system (screenshots of the system at work are available) and a brand new ITV collection quest. The next two Game Updates are already in the planning phases, with Bounty Hunters/Jedi scheduled for some tweaking in Update 3, and Commandos/Officers due for Update 4 (finally!).He also teases the playerbase with hints about what we can expect in Chapter 10. According to Jameson the headliner for next chapter will be the fan-favorite Meatlumps gang. This content will be, amazingly, not for the high level. Instead, level 45-65 characters will feel the love, and face down the dangerous Meatlump gang on their home turf. The next content drop will also see dramatic improvements in the Looking For Group and player search interfaces - tweaks designed to make finding other players less of a challenge on low-population servers. All great news for the average SWG player, and another follow-through with the team's promise to keep the players happy.

The newest content update for Sony Online's Star Wars Galaxies is expected soon, and Chapter 9 promises a world of new and enjoyable content for the players in the Galaxy Far, Far Away. Last week the official SWG site offered up a preview of one of the Chapter's additions: PvP collections. Collections are a great feature, added to the game back in Chapter 7. They allow players to show off their in-game accomplishments in a very deliberate fashion, and these PvP rewards follow much the same lines.Collections will be opened up for all kinds of PvP activities, including killing factional NPCs, slaying players on the opposing side, and downing officers of varying rank in the Rebel or Imperial forces. PvP collections not only net players swanky additions to their inventory, but have the possibility of earning the PvPer factional rewards above and beyond what they'd normally get. A rare base infiltration collection, for example, could earn a player 2500 faction points for spending/saving as they participate in the Galactic Civil War. We were promised a number of new collections in the upcoming patch, and it will be very interesting to see what other kinds of rewards will be made available post-Chapter 9.

  • Getting the colors right on Star Wars Galaxies' instruments

A recent developer diary on the official Star Wars Galaxies site offers a behind-the-scenes look at some tweaks included in the most recent live content update. The focus this time around was on the Entertainer and Medic classes. One (long-called for) addition to the Entertainer experience was custom-colored instruments. Bands can now color-coordinate outfits with instruments, making The Dancing Wookie Experience that much more powerful.Developer Jesse Benjamin walks us quickly through the process of adding a color palette to the craftables, as well as the new and interesting performance props dropped on a grateful dancing public. It's not the most important or extensive dev diary to come from the SOE-Austin studio, but it's always interesting to see what a community-focused team will do to deliver the goods.

The DORK Club has it right: the Ding is the sound of progress. There is no finer sound on Earth than the chime, or vamp, or whoosh of leveling up. It's visceral, it's addictive, and now, it can be all yours in mp3 form! The Club has collected no less than 40 dings from various games including Tabula Rasa, Star Wars Galaxies, Final Fantasy XI, Everquest, and even Diablo 2 for completeness' sake. Listening to all 40 one after another is an interesting experience. Some dings sound downright ominous, while others are veritably orchestral and epic. And sad as we are to admit this, just listening to them all makes us want to play them! At least one of these is going to be someone's new ringtone, guaranteed. See who stops you in public when your phone rings; it's like a geek mating call!

  • Star Wars Galaxies live update 2 improves Entertainers, Medics

The second major live update to Star Wars Galaxies was pushed to the servers on Thursday! This continues the new SWG team commitment to regular bugfixes and updates in between their larger content drops, called 'Chapters'. We got a tease of this update's content last week, and most of what was hinted at by the developers has shown up in the official patch notes.Highlights include: Many changes to the Entertainer class (hence the image above). Those lucky performers now have a new instrument, the ability to pause during songs or do solos, new colors for instruments and props, and several long-awaited bug fixes. Changes to the Medic class were prevalent in the update as well. Backline healers were tweaked in a number of statistical ways - primarily aimed at making them more viable in combat. The 57-month veteran awards were added to the game. Minor changes to the Bounty Hunter, Trader, and Smuggler classes Improvements to the UI, including a more useful buff interface and a number of UI bugfixes. A number of miscellaneous fixes that generally clean up the world a bit. My personal favorite: "The Feather Duster and Flower Bouquet now properly follow prop rules. This means they cannot be equipped in combat and only entertainers can dual wield them."

  • Veteran SWG players home in on veteran reward

It's been some time now since Star Wars Galaxies launched, but I was surprised to see that they're now offering their 57 month veteran award. Almost five years have passed since the Galaxy Far, Far Away opened to players, and it's been about four since the Jump to Lightspeed expansion brought players into space. Folks who have been in-game since the beginning now have a brand-new option for space travel, a doodad profiled in this past week's Friday Feature. The Homing Beacon will be a housing placeable item handed out to veteran players. If you're in the same star system as your beaconed house, you'll now have the option to land directly at your home from the system's space station. It can be placed and removed multiple times, but only the veteran player can make use of it; other housing administrators are out of luck.I've always been partial to these regular gifts from the dev team; my personal favorite is probably the Jedi Starfighter hologram from the 21-month slot - just beautiful. Do you have a vet award that you thought was particularly spot on?

  • Previews for Star Wars Galaxies Chapter 9 and Update 2

The SOE-Austin design machine rolls on, with more content in the pipeline for Star Wars Galaxies. WarCry is hosting a preview of the game's goals in the coming months, with feedback from the dev team on how the first game update went. In a nutshell: not as well as they'd wanted. There was apparently a lot of miscommunication between the players and designers, that resulted in the expectation that Game Update 1's highlighted classes (the Spy and Smuggler) would get complete overhauls. That's actually very much not the point of the updates, which are only meant to polish out the world's rough parts. The piece goes on to detail some elements we can expect to see in Game Update 2, which should be pushed live in the next week or so. That patch will offer general polishing to the Entertainer and Medic classes, along with a new raft of bug fixes. Chapter 9, the next proper content drop anticipated before the end of the month, also gets some lip service. The official SWG site has a few tidbits on upcoming content as well. A dev diary talks about the thinking behind the newly improved buff interface, and an article called Domain of Evil offers background on the ominous Exar Kun - a baddie incoming in a Chapter 9 heroic instance.

We were invited to check out Cartoon Network's upcoming kid-focused MMO FusionFall, and while clearly still in development, it shows a lot of potential. Developed in part by Korea's Grigon Entertainment, makers of Seal Online, QRing, and Gambledon, this is a title with a great deal of pedigree under the hood. Among the notable names on this project are Sam Lewis, former systems and content designer for Star Wars Galaxies; Robert Knopf, recently of Ultima Online; and Richard Weil, the community relations manager for many MMOs, including City of Heroes/Villains, Lineage I and II, Tabula Rasa, and Auto Assault. With so many experienced and creative people behind it, FusionFall definitely stands to make a splash in the 8 - 14 year old demographic that Cartoon Network is shooting for. This isn't to say they don't have a few challenges ahead of them, however. We'll explore this, and show you the trailer, after the break.%Gallery-16922%

I hope all of you got to check out Elizabeth Harper's great preview of the upcoming LEGO Universe MMOG by NetDevil. I'm personally a huge fan of LEGO and proudly admit to playing with those little, plastic blocks well beyond the recommended age rating. There's just something great about a product that gives you the tools to create without limiting the possibilities of your imagination. When it comes down to it, LEGO is simply another medium like clay or paint. It's up to the artist/designer to manipulate the medium into something unique and meaningful. NetDevil's product will allow us to partake in that enjoyment in a digital fashion, although, unlike creation in Second Life, it appears as though artists and designers will not have free reign over content creation. In the context of an all ages game, the choice to place limits on creativity seems like a valid one. Allowing users to create anything they wanted with LEGO obviously opens up a Pandora's Box of offensive possibilities. I'll take the high road for now and refrain from mentioning the many examples of naughty things you could create in LEGO. But beyond potentially offensive things, creating absolutely anything you wanted in a game could potentially destroy the game from a design and gameplay perspective. User-created content brings up a variety of questions. To what extent can users shape their worlds without breaking them? To what extent can they expand and add to the content without altering the original vision of the developers? What role can user-generated content play in the future?

Fresh from the "Better late than never" file, it's time, once again, for another edition of Ask Massively, satiating the knowledge needs of the MMORPG community since roughly a couple of months ago. Sometimes, the best questions come from your friends while shooting the bull over lunch. So it was this week for our latest column. It all started when someone else asked a very common question, "Will any game out there ever be as successful as World of Warcraft?" While the rest of my lunch crowd tossed out the usual suspects (pretty much every game released or due to be released this year), one of my friend's mind took off in an unexpected direction.Dave, who is a DJ over at VVC Radio, took on the question from a vastly different perspective. He asked What makes an MMORPG "successful"?Much to the unexpected joy of the rest of the table, the question stopped me dead in my tracks. It wasn't that the question was particularly difficult to answer, just that there are so many good answers out there. In fact, I understand that this question has been discussed elsewhere fairly recently. If you would like to take a shot at stunning me into utter silence, you have other options besides trying to figure out where I go to lunch every day. For instance, you can submit your question to our tipline, or even drop us an email. If you'd like to continue down this particular rabbit hole, then keep reading...

In the last couple of weeks, a lot has changed in the future outlook for upcoming massively games over the next few years. Marvel Universe Online is officially canceled, but in its place rises Champions Online like a shining beacon for fans of the superhero MMO -- although there is always the chance that Marvel could continue to pursue MUO with another developer. However, the change I'm most curious about involves the Star Wars IP, which according to rumors is definitely being developed, but not by Sony Online Entertainment or Bioware. If true, that changes a lot of things. It partly changes Bioware's upcoming massively game into something else entirely. However, the biggest change is that a Star Wars MMO is coming, but from somebody we haven't thought of yet. After the many woes of Star Wars Galaxies and the later success World of Warcraft has seen financially -- Lucas Arts wouldn't want this done in any way other than impeccably well.So then, who have they chosen?

Since Massively launched we've been covering the development work done by the team at SOE-Austin on Star Wars Galaxies. We've chatted about Chapter 7, which added the much-loved collections concept to the game. We've discussed Chapter 8, the most recent update, which added the Nova Orion station and a fantastic encounter vs. a Star Destroyer. And just recently, we talked about the team's big plans for the rest of the year, shaking up the status quo. The first of those shake-ups happened this week, as Game Update 1 rolled out to the live servers. There aren't any huge new game features to hang a title on, because Game Updates are aimed purely at getting old stuff polished up. So instead there are lots of micro-changes added on to the Spy and Smuggler classes, corrections to the Collection Reactors schematics, improvements to the UI, and a handful of improvements to the Space experience. An especially interesting one-line patch note jumps out: there are brand new animations for a bunch of Jedi skills! If you're interested in the player reaction to these changes, there's a brisk discussion on the official SWG forums - Smugglers seem especially underwhelmed. Can't please everybody ...Still, with rumors of a new Star Wars MMO about, it's great to see real progress on our current door into the Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Valentine's day comes even in the Galaxy Far, Far away, and you know what that means - a lame tie-in to a fuzzy species! Christmas has the Wookie Life Day, copped from the reprehensible Star Wars Christmas special. I'm not really sure how Ewoks represent love in Star Wars Galaxies, but these midget teddy bears apparently bring in the funk. The "Festival of Love" sees the chief of the Ewokian tribe and the Shaman Logray heading to Theed in a sort of ambassadorship of affection. There, adventurers can try to speak the Ewok language like C-3PO or partake in traditional Love Festival fare. Chak Juice and Camby berries are on offer for a small fee, and apparently give the imbiber great big stat boosts. The official Festival thread has hints about the food and the Ewok language scrambler that makes up this particular V-day event.

  • Star Wars the only IP that can challenge World of Warcraft?

    by

    02.11.2008

Games industry rumor-monger Surfer Girl is apparently not done with MMO-bombshells yet. Last week she partially deflated the hopes of folks wanting a Massively Multiplayer version of Knights of the Old Republic. Today she says she sees the SOE/LucasArts venture Star Wars Galaxies closing down within a year of the release of the new game. Lucas and the (unnamed) company working on the new MMO apparently think Star Wars is "the only IP that can pose a serious challenge [to] World of Warcraft". She also claims that the Old Republic setting is too niche to fully utilize the Star Wars IP, which is why it's not the new game's setting. If the new MMO is set in the same period as the new television show, as she previously claimed, it will likely take place sometime between Episode III and IV. That previously untapped period in the Galaxy Far, Far Away is the setting for most of Lucas' new projects. She goes on to say that LucasArts and the dev house expect their new project to have at least three million subscribers by the end of its first year. As for what BioWare is actually working on, she intimates that the Edmonton studio is working on a new KOTOR title. The MMO the Austin studio is making (according to an earlier post of hers) "has a fantasy setting akin to the company's previous fantasy role playing games." So ... Dungeons and Dragons possibly? The world made so much more sense last week. Do you think she is right about WoW and Star Wars? Is the Force the only thing that could shake Azeroth's deathgrip on the massive gaming genre?

  • Developer diary details Star Wars Galaxies animation process

Making a Massive game is mighty complicated. According to programmer Matt Boudreaux at SOE-Austin, no part of the development process is more interconnected than making the pretty avatars move correctly on the screen. The animation process is the subject of a developer diary at the official Star Wars Galaxies site. Matt explains some of the steps required to get an SWG character looking just right. The basics of animation start with the artists, he details. They create the 'skeleton' on which a mob or avatar is built. With the skeleton in place, designers step in to apply specific animations to activities. In SWG, animations tend to be focused around the tool you're using. Two players using the same attack might see completely different animations because they're using different weapons. Plenty more on the process rounds out his description, which is well worth exploring.

Have you ever read the Surfer Girl Reviews Star Wars blog? Despite the name, she usually has nothing to say about the Galaxy Far, Far Away. Instead, she regularly drops deep insider tidbits about the gaming industry. Secrets Man Was Not Meant to Know type stuff. If she's a scammer, she's good enough to fool some of the best in the business. One of the men behind the curtain at the well respected site Gamasutra, Simon Carless, regularly deconstructs her posts on the GameSetWatch blog. She generally passes his sniff test.So why do I mention her here? Because early today she dropped a possible bombshell on all of us who have been really hoping BioWare's MMO-in-development is Knights of the Old Republic Online. Says the Girl: "Next year's Star Wars MMO, not being developed by BioWare or Sony Online Entertainment, will launch simultaneously for PC and consoles alongside the debut of the first Star Wars TV series in fall 2009, of which the storylines of the game will tie into. Those Artistic Lucases already have a second online title planned that I've heard has nothing to do with Star Wars."Jigga-wha? If this is true and the next Star Wars MMO isn't from BioWare or SOE, who is making it? Does this mean that BioWare isn't making KOTORO? I can't imagine that come 2010 or 2011 there will be three Star Wars based online games around. Anyone have a guess as to what's going on here?

The zapper has claimed a few more victims in the Galaxy Far, Far, Away and ... does Arena.net have an all-encompassing name for the Guild Wars world? I know the continents are named Tyria, Elona, and Cantha, but does the planet have a name? In any case, patch notes have come down for both games, adding minor tweaks to recent gameplay additions for both games. Star Wars Galaxies patch 8.1 puts the first touches and corrections on the recent Chapter 8 update, ironing out some troubles with the new ships and smoothing out some collection issues. The Guild Wars patch primarily addresses some poor choices AIs were using when using certain Hero skills. They also updated Automated Tournament map rotations, fixed an art glitch with some male armor, and correctly equipped some wayward mobs: "Charr Bladestorms found in Guild Wars: Eye of the North now wield swords instead of axes to match their equipped skills." It must have been embarrassing for those Bladestorms to go around trying to use skills like Hundred Blades and Gash to no effect ...

Raph Koster -- known for being the lead designer on Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies -- and his development studio Areae are the masterminds behind a little piece of software you may or may not know as Metaplace. Some also know Raph as that guy who did the MMO thing on Penny Arcade a while back. Today at 5pm PST, a live developer Q&A is scheduled over at the Metaplace site. We're not entirely sure what to expect from it considering that Areae has said it won't be taking place in IRC, but you can be certain that we're going to be there to report on it for anyone interested. Metaplace is planned to be a platform which will allow users to create their own online space -- be it a massively chat room or a 32-person puzzle game server -- and then connect all of these games together like the internet. The software itself is not locked to any one platform and is planned to be accessible by anything with an internet connection. The whole idea is to let users create the kind of game they want, in the kind of way they want and in the easiest possible way.Join us after the jump for coverage of the whole event, live blog style!

More often than not, we tend to get stuck in a rut in our gaming careers. I've been quite guilty of it in the past – all of my characters in World of Warcraft have levelled their way up solo. I've decided to take steps to rectify this, by rolling up a new character, a Warrior this time, and I plan on making a concerted effort to get her into as many instances as I can. Even if it means jumping into the PUG from Hell, I'm going to force myself to step out of the rut I've gotten into in my games. My big lottery win hasn't came round yet, so I'm not yet able to play WoW all day long in my boxer shorts. Since I have to work for a living, my time online is pretty restricted, so I like to know that I'm spending it wisely, which means that I tend to end up falling into the same routine – maybe a couple of daily quests, a quick check of the Auction House, maybe clear the odd solo quest out of my log. It doesn't sound very exciting, and sometimes it occurs to me that it isn't.
