  • New Street Fighter 2 HD Remix details at Capcom Gamer's Day

David Sirlin, designer and competitive gamer extraordinaire, has updated his blog with a few new details regarding Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Apparently, amidst all the hoopla surrounding the announcement of Street Fighter IV, we've overlooked the fact that SF2HD was actually playable(!) at Capcom Gamer's Day in London, albeit with only Ken and Ryu selectable.SF2HD is newly re-balanced from the original, and features "tons of changes" according to Sirlin. The HD remix will also now include support for widescreen 16:9, and feature remixed music. And, as originally hoped, included in the package will be an arcade-perfect version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo, with no changes made. In order to achieve the best online fighting experience possible, Capcom is attempting to duplicate (rather than license) the networking technology of GGPO, which attempts to streamline online gameplay in fighting games for the least lag possible. Sirlin himself is a game designer currently hard at work balancing the gameplay of SF2HD, so when he says it's looking great, he would know.

This sort of thing doesn't happen very often, you know. According to Games Radar, a Capcom Gamer's Day event in London has revealed a brand new (and not entirely unexpected) entry in the seminal 2D fighting franchise, Street Fighter. Most notably, this new entry increases the numeral at the end of the title as opposed to the number of Super Hyper Ultra adjectives at the start. Not much is known about Street Fighter IV at present, save for the fact that its release is more than a year away. Other things you can likely expect while we wait for more details and media to arrive: Ken and Ryu in HD, Hadoukens and extremely pithy victory remarks.

  • 'Cammy' see more SSFIITHDR characters?

It's been a long time since we've seen new characters from Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, but today we've got Cammy above and M. Bison after the break. This all comes on the heels of Capcom asking for people to submit their vote in the Achievement Poll for the game. There really isn't much to say on this art except that if you could please stop staring at Cammy's crotch for five seconds and finish the story you'll notice that we've got this neat little link here to all our previous coverage. Still no word on a release date, but apparently the online development is coming along fine.[Via X3F]

    09.14.2007

The polls are now open at the Capcom blog to vote for the Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix achievements. Like we reported back in July, Capcom asked for suggestions on what the achievements should be in SFIITHDR. It appears Capcom chose seven suggestions and posted them for the world to vote on (with proper registration at the Capcom site). The possible achievements are: Beat Akuma (arcade mode) Win with every character in an Online Ranked Match 5 Perfect Rounds in Ranked Online Matches 5 Perfect Rounds in Story Mode (Any Difficulty Level) Defeat an opponent in under 15(?) seconds, Arcade Mode Perform a 7-hit combo or higher (any mode, including training) Defeat Sagat with Ryu's fierce dragon punch (any mode) We kinda like all of them, hopefully beyond this publicity stunt Capcom may keep them all in. Capcom is also taking suggestions at the site for the achievements' actual names. With any luck they'll sprinkle some inside joke achievements in for the hardcore. So far this game really has done a great job with the community outreach.

  • New Street Fighter movie helmed by Doom director

Variety is reporting that one helping of live-action Street Fighter just wasn't enough, Hollywood is going to try again. Hyde Park Entertainment and Capcom have signed on Andrzej Bartkowiak to direct a new movie of Street Fighter ... but here's where it actually gets good. Variety says his credits include Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds and Cradle to the Grave. What they fully neglect to mention is that Bartkowiak directed another video game-based movie: DOOM!Yes, the man who directed DOOM is going to helm the new Street Fighter movie, which will apparently follow Chun Li on a "journey for justice." Can't you just feel The Darkness swelling up inside of you to stop this? The original Street Fighter movie starring Jean-Claude "muscles from Brussels" Van Damme earned $33 million. It also starred Raul Julia (Addams Family movies, Kiss of the Spider Woman) in one of his last roles ever -- that was the real tragedy. Hyde Park just finished a couple movies you will probably never hear of. Place your bets now if this Street Fighter movie will actually be worse than the original, which would seriously be an accomplishment.[Thanks Ben]

We've been asking about your favorite entries in big Nintendo franchises (and we probably will again!), but we thought we'd ask a more macro-scale question. What's your favorite franchise on Nintendo consoles? You've got your Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, obviously, but there's also Sonic, Resident Evil, Mega Man, Street Fighter, and years and years of other series throughout history. And don't forget about the comparatively newer series like Super Monkey Ball and Phantasy Star Online! As for us, it's definitely Castlevania. We have been faithful to Konami's pseudo-horror series since the very start.

Meanwhile, in Tokyo, Arcadia's annual fighting game tournament has begun. Tougeki -- better known as Super Battle Opera -- can easily be considered the world cup of fighting games, drawing competitors from all over the world and for a variety of different titles. This years line-up consists of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Hyper Anniversary, King of Fighters 98, Melty Blood: Act Cadenza, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core, Arcana Heart, Virtua Fighter 5, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and Soul Calibur III: Arcade Edition."Competitive gaming" may be a dirty word to some, but unlike the spoiled brats that make up the "professional" scene, the players of the fighting game community tend to keep it real with no sponsors to foot their bills or debatable endorsements to pimp out. The players that make up Team USA are the winners of this years EVO regional tournaments. Their reward? A trip to Japan to compete in SBO and a chance to bring it to them before they bring it back to us later this month at the EVO world finals. We're rooting for you, boys.Today's videos are the 2006 finals for some of the returning Super Battle Opera games. Enjoy!

While cats are no longer funny and Rick Astley has been banished from the Internet, Perfect Cherry Blossom remixes continue to be pumped out by Japanese users. The loosely translated and remixed boss theme, "Marisa Stole the Precious Thing," has been applied to everything from Super Mario World hacks to Lucky ??? Star videos and just about anything else you can think of. Not even Street Fighter is safe as Guile and the gang have discovered.Personally, we don't mind it one bit. It could use more "TIGER!" but really, what couldn't?

  • GameTap Thursday: Super Street Fighter II Turbo at last

    07.26.2007

We'd like to consider today the apex of the Summer Throwdown promotion. GameTap has always featured an incredible selection of fighting games (especially in the last month or so), and yet two very specific, very missing titles kept the service from feeling whole. Today, GameTap is whole. It has found its smile. Super Street Fighter II Turbo (Arcade) - Arguably the greatest fighting game ever conceived, Super Turbo is the craft of 2D fighting defined. Even after more than a decades worth of competitive play, ST still enjoys a worldwide following and for one very good reason: it's the best ... the best around. Street Fighter Alpha 2 (Arcade) - Also known as "the good one" in the series, Alpha 2 shuns its awkward siblings with its extremely solid mechanics and well balanced cast. It also gave us the incredible drama of the B3 finals back in 1996. Bloodrayne 2 (PC) - This is the one with pole dance fighting. Total Overdose (PC) - Not the greatest shooter around, but fairly underrated in its own right. The best way to describe it is Max Payne meets Tony Hawk ... only in Mexico. The Free Play section has been slightly updated to accommodate The King of Fighters 98 and the ever so adorable Super Gem Fighter: Mini Mix. Damn it feels good to be a fighting fan.

Capcom is looking for your input into what the achievements should be for the Xbox 360 version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix – did we get the whole title in there? Capcom wants you to put your suggestions in the comment thread of their post on the issue. You can feel free to make suggestions below too, but we're not forwarding them to Capcom.Of course, hardcore Street Fighter II players looking forward to SSFIITHDR are making suggestions like getting five perfects in a row or having a five to eight chain combo. We're still looking to achieve basic things like Zangief's pile driver, or for those seeking an even more basic achievement – just pull off a shoryuken. Capcom says they'll take the suggestions on August 1st and start sifting through them, then they'll take the ones that are actually technologically possible and send it back out to the community for voting. Come on shoryuken achievement!

  • PS3 Fanboy interview: Udon Comics and Street Fighter

Everything old is new again. The internet has been abuzz ever since the first sprites from Capcom's upcoming HD Remix of Super Street Fighter II were publicly released. The art, created by Udon, looks absolutely spectacular. We interviewed Jim Zubkavich, Artist and Project Manager at Udon, about their collaboration with Capcom. How did Udon and Capcom first team up?UDON began in 2000 as a team creating illustration/design artwork for comic book or toy manufacturing clients. After a couple years getting established, we decided to publish our own comic books. One of the first ideas that came to mind was creating comics based on licenses that all of us enjoyed growing up. At the top of that list was Capcom's Street Fighter property. After some negotiation and art samples sent back and forth, Capcom allowed UDON to create a new full color comic series that debuted in the summer of 2003. When the comic series began we would just send Capcom the script and artwork for approval each month. Eventually our relationship with Capcom grew stronger and they started communicating with us more frequently about the franchise and the strength of our artists. In 2004, after the debut of our Darkstalkers comic series and translation of the Eternal Challenge Street Fighter artbook were well received, Capcom approached us about contributing artwork to their Fighting Jam video game. In turn, that strengthened the bond between the two companies even more. At each step we've strived to show Capcom how much we respect their properties and how much we enjoy being a part of their creative process. With the 20th anniversary of Street Fighter coming in 2008, Capcom wanted us to be a part of the festivities. The high definition re-release of Super Street Fighter II Turbo is something we're very proud to be contributing to.

Over on the Capcom blog Brian posted a photo preview of all the Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix themes he's working on. In the picture above you can see a total of three new themes with the top two being the boys and girls of Street Fighter while the blade color coded version on the bottom is a collage of the fighters. Brian also mentioned that there will be one SPFIITHDR picture pack that will include eleven gamer pictures. No pricing or street dates for these or the Arcade game have been announced other than the infamous "soon" time frame.

  • T. Hawk gets HD Remix'd, plus more remastering info

Just so you fanboys know, that shot of T. Hawk is full resolution, from Super Street Fighter II HD Remix, of course. Capcom Digital posted that image, complete with an analysis of how they remaster frames to incorporate the new artwork. They use Sagat's standing Roundhouse as an example. Rey then demonstrated how the art is broken up into tiles, and they use those as a guide for when they're redrawing the frame. This prevents a scenario causing a foot to go through an opponent's head due to a hit detection issues. A good read, and it also shows the comparison shot of T. Hawk, as well as the line art for Sagat. Go take a look!

A tiny teaser site popped up on Capcom Japan's site today, advertising a new, original 2D fighting game from the company oh-so-famous for sequalizing ad nauseum. The teaser page, which is labeled "2D Kakutou" (or 2D Fighter), features a fiery video full of words that we can't read. Unfortunately for us, our Japanese-translating robot is out sick this week, and Babelfish doesn't get along with flash too well. Still, we do know that the title is arcade-bound, and that our loving readers will probably help us figure out the rest of the site's content. In the meantime, let's rejoice knowing that Capcom continues to embrace 2D, as we look forward to this mystery title, as well as the super-pretty Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, and try our hardest to forget that the Street Fighter EX titles ever existed.Update: Joystiq reader Sizer provides the following translation of the kanji: "For the first time in 3 years, an original Capcom 2D fighting game... Coming Soon!" Thanks, Sizer!

Recently posted on The Etch-A-Sketchist, a site dedicated to art created on our favorite drawing canvas of frustration: a detailed rendering of a Street Fighter II battle between Ryu and Sagat. Even more astounding is the artist created the scene on a travel Etch-A-Sketch which is approximately the size of a bacterium. Great patience and a steady hand went in to the making of this piece of art. Be jealous. Also take a peek at Sonic the Hedgehog, Mr. Spock, and the classic Optimus Prime.

  • F-Zero X, Street Fighter II Turbo rush onto Virtual Console

Today's Virtual Console releases, scheduled to go live at 9AM PST, are all about pushing the pedal to the metal in our quest to satisfy the need for speed and finally outrun the terrible writing clichés and racing game references pursuing us. Europe's 100th Virtual Console game, F-Zero X, has you hurtling about futuristic tracks at absurd speeds, Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting has you hurting Chun Li even quicker than before and China Warrior has... uh... released much faster than we expected! Yeah, let's go with that. F-Zero X (N64, 1-4 players, 1000 Wii Points): The N64's hover-car racer pushed the series forward in the best way that was possible at the time -- it added a prominent "X" to the title. It wasn't until later that we learned that adding a "GX" was the ultimate masterstroke. Street Fighter II Turbo Edition: Hyper Fighting (SNES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): With mention of both the words "Turbo" and "Hyper" in the title, it becomes clear that this game is indeed a bit faster than The World Warriors. Enjoy it before those fancy HD characters start punching your eyeballs. China Warrior (TurboGrafx-16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): A side-scrolling action game depicting either gaming's most fragile hero ever, or just some tough guy in China.

  • Chun Li cries the pain of loss away

The Capcom blog finally gave us a taste of what Chun Li will look like in the upcoming Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Do they show us happy Chun Li, angry Chun Li or fighting Chun Li? No, they show us crying I-just-got-the-stuffing-beat-out-of-me Chun Li. Poor girl. The image hasn't been colored in yet and wherever you see blotches, that'll be filled in with the crimson color of her blood. Obviously, this is the animation for the continue screen.Kinda stinks that the first image we see showing one of the strong ladies from SSFIITHDROMGSRSLY has to be one of her all abused. Show us Chun Li thigh, that's her strongest feature! All the guys we've seen were portrayed all macho in fighting poses. So far we've seen Ken and Akuma, then last week we saw Guile, with his controversial backwards American flag. One of the developers for the game says, "Guile's flags tattoos are not backwards. Well technically they are, but it depends on which way the character is facing. Because the old code flips the character art depending on which way the character is facing, it was like this before but just not as noticeable." We're pretty sure that violates some rule about the flag. Yeah, the US flag has rules. Maybe we'll get a non-Frank Miller Sin City version of Chun Li next?

Capcom continues its morphine drip of showing off a character per week from Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for XBLA and PSN. This weeks character is Guile, the master of the flat-top. This follows the releases of both Akuma and Ken over the last couple weeks. Capcom swears the images are what the characters will look like in the game and says we'll all be impressed when we see them in motion. Hopefully that'll happen as soon as Min-E3.

Behold, another sprite from Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has been released all made over and it's Guile! Just look at the shading on his 100% steroid grown biceps and the subtle blending on his camo pants. Yes, the the SSFIITHDR artwork fever has touched us all as we fall in love with each HD'ified character. The only thing we question is whether the stance featured in the artwork above is humanly possible by a guy. Seriously, that's got to hurt Guile, that is unless you want to share with us your dirty little secret. More HD Guile artwork available after the jump.[Thanks, DeadPlasmaCell]

  • Capcom CPS-3 arcade board finally cracked

    06.11.2007

The Capcom CPS-3 arcade board only ran a handful of games, including JoJo's Venture, Street Fighter III, and Red Earth, but that hasn't stopped the emulation community from cracking the board's code, which puts them one step closer to emulating the board itself. And considering CPS-3 debuted in 1996, it's about time!Posts on Haze's Mame WIP as well as the more technical-oriented Notas de Andy (translation) show that the decryption has opened up the developers to make further progress, as David Haywood has already gotten the two JoJo games to "execute some of the game code, rather than just bios." We look forward to watching their progress.[Via Engadget]
