Frankly, we're amazed it has taken the plumber this long to blow a gasket. For how many times that princess gets kidnapped and how much of a scared punk his brother is, if we were Mario, we would've cut the cord ages ago. But hey, that's just us.For all of you who think seeing pixelated violence and blood, consider this NSFW. The rest of you unconcerned with this, hit the play button above and peep the video.[Note: Of course we love Luigi, but face it, folks: the guy couldn't beat his way out of a wet paper bag.]

We like this new trend of people crafting game-related afghans. First it was with Tetris, and now with a scene depicting one of our favorite plumbers (Mario, obviously). This particular blanket was made by ThomcatDesigns, who have earned our complete respect for their (his? her?) mad crafting skills. The detail in this makes it look like it came right out of one of our favorite NES classics.Check the gallery to see the chronological progression of the afghan as it was created. It's pretty amazing to watch it turn from a mess of yarn into a masterpiece.%Gallery-20628%[Via Technabob; pictures via thomcatdesgins' Flickr account]

  • The best thing you'll see today: Mario theme played with RC car and bottles

We think the title pretty much speaks for itself, but in case it doesn't: It's the theme from Super Mario Bros., played with an RC car and what appear to be wine bottles. Also: It's an incredible, moving tribute to the power of being really, really bored. We really don't have anything to add here that's in any way going to be approaching the coolness, the radical-osity of this video. So please, watch and enjoy.[Thanks, Jonah]

  • Play video game music on a piano -- just like the pros!

Taking a break from porting visual novel demos like Fate/hollow ataraxia Prologue and Snatcher Pilot, developer Multiple: Option has posted its first original project, a neat homebrew application that teaches you how to play simple video game melodies with a virtual piano. If only there was a similar program for 90s gangsta rap songs -- we would love to learn 2Pac's "I Ain't Mad at Cha!"Multiple: Option's software, Game Melody Oratorio, includes lessons for songs Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, Tetris, Bubble Bobble, and The Legend of Zelda. Each melody has two modes, one for practicing the tune with visual cues, the other for playing the melody without any help once you've mastered it. Don't see your favorite video game song on the list? There's also a "Free Play" mode that allows you to experiment and play whatever you want.[Via NEO Compo 2008]

Hey kids, listen up. That guy with the red hat and blue overalls in the fancy new Super Smash Bros. game you just brought home? His name is Mario. He's a neat guy. This Wii mod here features the lovable plumber in his natural habitat, World 1-1. On the other side is a pipe, his favored form of travel, which doubles as a Wiimote charger. Pretty great. OK, that's it for today's lesson, stay safe out there![Via Wii Fanboy]

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Super_Mario_Bros_World_1_1_makes_for_a_great_Wii_mod'; With Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, and even Yoshi-themed Wii casemods already out in the wild, it was only a matter of time before someone personalized their console with everyone's favorite mascot, Mario. BeerBellyJoe sculpted the plumber's figure out of clay, affixing him to one of the Wii's side panels before painting the entire system. Interestingly, that cloud looks nothing like the bush!It isn't visible in the image above, but there's a pipe on the other side that doubles as a Wii remote charger. The front of the decorated base also has an extra USB port and an LED mushroom that lights up when the port is in use. digg_url='http://digg.com/nintendo/What_would_Super_Mario_Bros_look_like_on_Atari'; Ah, Atari 2600 -- where would we be without ye? But, now that you're older, we've moved on to newer, prettier models. We're sure you understand. What's that? You don't understand? You think that games like Super Mario Bros. would look just fine on you?Well, let's take a look. The video above will show us the truth ... huh.Uh, what did we think? No, the game didn't look like a discolored, misshapen blob. What? That's so not code for "you're fat!"Okay, you want the truth? You're ugly. This one's a bit of an old one, but we just love it when people come together to celebrate Nintendo and their many priceless contributions to the world. This video focuses on an a capella group with a love for Mario, Nintendo's Italian plumber we all know and love, as they lay down the music and even act a bit of the game out.The real question is, though, does this group beat Ted's from Scrubs?

  • Take a shine to this custom NES

It's hard to argue against this modded, repainted NES in terms of looks, even if red and black isn't your thing. That sleek shine could put your eye out at twenty paces under the right lighting conditions, and the LEDs really set it off. But the best part? It works, and that's what really matters. We'd suffer even the most hideous NES so long as we could turn it on and have a chance to blow on a few old carts. In this case? Said old carts are Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. All that's missing is a Zapper so you can get your Duck Hunt on.If you want to see this baby in its full, glossy glory, eBay seller metrosqurl provided a video, which you can scope out after the break.

  • Dojo update: Masterpieces

Do not adjust your monitor. This is still the Nintendo Wii Fanboy Dojo update you know and love, even if today's dojo announcement falls squarely in the region of "Dubya. Tee. Eff."Basically, Brawl will be shipping to stores with several "Masterpieces," disc-based trial versions of Virtual Console games. There's nothing too obscure in the selection revealed so far (Super Mario Bros., Ice Climber, The Legend of Zelda, Kid Icarus, Kirby's Adventure, Super Metroid, and Star Fox 64), but Sakurai has promised that more titles are on the way. Obviously, because they're trial versions, you can only play them for a limited time (though that may not deter some people). You can view this feature in two ways, we suppose. Some will see it as a fitting tribute to the greatest videogame company of all time. Others might decipher this as a cynical piece of free advertising for the Virtual Console. As for us, we're just happy that new or younger players will be getting an insight into Nintendo's outstanding body of work. Just don't look at the games Japan is getting. That would make you angry.%Gallery-10206%%Gallery-6869%

  • Super Mario 2 is better with drumming

Listen, we love the music to Super Mario Bros. as much as the next staff of gaming snobs, but if we're being honest we have an equally large spot in our hearts for some of the less heralded tunes from the series, like the beautiful (if occasionally shrill) soundtrack to Super Mario Bros. 2. Italian drummer Andrea Vadrucci apparently shares our passion, evidenced by his totally rocking version of the game's theme performed on his awe-inspiring drum kit. Is there a game soundtrack that couldn't be enhanced by Vadrucci's skin stylings? If there is, we haven't heard it.

  • Dojo update: The Mushroomy Kingdom

It makes perfect sense: Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a game that oozes Nintendo from every pore. And if there's a level in gaming that is more quintessentially Nintendo than World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros., we have yet to see it. It is iconic. The Mushroomy Kingdom -- note the extra "y" -- is Brawl's re-imagining of the most famous stage in Nintendo, nay, videogame history. It's not aged well, however. Nearly a quarter of a century has passed since Mario last visited 1-1, and it shows -- just look at the state of that flag. Some things haven't changed, though. As you fight, the stage still scrolls gently sideways, and every block and pit is still in place, just ... older. Better still, selecting this level may occasionally allow you the chance to visit World 1-2. Awesome, much?Just looking at these pictures brought a smile to our faces this morning, and listening to the Mushroomy Kingdom theme only helped matters.%Gallery-10206%%Gallery-6869%Read: Mushroomy KingdomRead: Super Mario Bros.: Ground Theme

  • This piranha plant won't bite you

We usually don't feel warm and fuzzy when thinking about piranha plants, but we suppose it can't be helped when one actually is warm and fuzzy. Still, years of training (read: playing Mario games) have conditioned us to keep our fingers away from these beasts, even if they look harmless. This precious pincushion was made by a Toronto artist named FoulFowl, and was wet and needle felted. Since we're domestically challenged, we're not exactly sure what that entails, but it sounds impressive -- at least, we hope so, since the craft is set at $25.[Via Technabob]

Many of us can remember the joy of playing Super Mario Bros. for the first time. Imagine how different that memory would be (something along the lines of pulling out our hair and screaming a lot, we're sure) if the game had been more like the ripoff in the video above. While this hack (which features the cheapest enemies and traps of all time) might be frustrating to play, its epic fail results in nothing but hilarity when watching. We would gush about our favorite parts here, but we don't want to spoil anything (the surprise is half the fun!). Feel free to share your favorite bits in the comments, though. To experience this torture for yourself, you can download the game here (click the first link). Also, if you enjoyed the video, check out levels two, three, and four after the break.

Marcelo Perfetti and Martin Urrutia's production is an imaginative display of how a stylus-supported version of Super Mario Bros. would play on the Nintendo DS. This paper-powered approximation of the NES classic's first level even comes complete with a tinny version of the Overworld theme! That creative bit with the flag at the end is extra charming, snuck in with a wink. Why can't more kids use up their near-limitless amounts of free time to entertain us with these homemade picture shows? Now, if only they had gone the extra mile and flicked a lighter underneath the screen to burn in some fireworks ...

  • Super Mario Sisters was almost a reality

In some deeply weird alternative universe, perhaps one in which Japanese people actually bought Microsoft consoles and England's footballers weren't quite so irredeemably rubbish, we might never have experienced Super Mario Bros. as we know it. Instead, we could have been playing Super Mario Sisters.Alas, Nintendo of America never did follow through on a trademark application it filed in February, 1990 for a game called "SUPER MARIO SISTERS." The application was abandoned almost two years later, depriving us all of an estrogen-fuelled version of the world's favorite platformer.Go past the break for a grab of the application.

  • The VC Advantage: A Very Special Anniversary Edition

    11.21.2007

The internet has made it easy to find cheats for games, but we miss the tips pages from game magazines, when the discovery of a new code could inspire you to go back to an old game. These codes aren't exactly new, but oldness is the essence of the Virtual Console! We're bringing back the classic codes every week on The VC Advantage. It's another special celebration this week at Wii Fanboy, and we thought that we would do something special in this week's VC Advantage, involving one of the most iconic Virtual Console games -- in fact, one of the most iconic video games of all time. Even though Super Mario Bros. didn't come out in the U.S. until Christmas, it's the canonical Nintendo game and thus seems like a perfect candidate for the Wii anniversary week VCA.Two (more) caveats before we delve into our subject matter: first, we'd like to bring up the point that not all secrets are cheats, and not all are intentional. Some of the most interesting discoveries in video games were put in there totally by accident, or are the result of someone's imagination. Second, the images and subject matter of today's VCA are as not safe for work as unaltered Super Mario Bros. footage can be.

  • MIDI + art + game songs = <3

Some awesome soul has taken it about himself to make visually enhanced game tunes, and the result is nothing short of spectacular. Using a program called Music Animation Machine MIDI Player, which converts the musical notes of MIDI songs into art, the creator of these videos has managed to blow our minds. Sure, we always enjoy it when musical sounds are synthesized with visual imagery, but when some of our favorite songs are involved, it just makes it that much better. We decided to put the Mega Man 2 "Dr. Wily Stage 1" song up top to celebrate Rock Man's 20th anniversary, and well, because it's our favorite. If you don't look after the break to check out the equally awesome Final Fantasy IV, Kirby, Mario, and other tunes, though, you officially fail at the internet.

Okay, during Zelda week, we said that after we had seen the ultimate in gaming cakes, we would never post another one again. Well, first of all, we lied, blatantly and outrageously. Still love us? Good. Second of all, this one has the whole first Super Mario Bros. level! C'mon, how could we resist? Short answer: we could not.We just hope none of the guests got the urge to smash any bricks ....
