If you can't wait for the Super Meat Boy level editor which the game's creators plan to release within the next six months, there's another, slightly more esoteric option for customizing your super difficult platforming experience. The game's modding community has uncovered a "devmode" within the PC build of Super Meat Boy, giving the keys to the kingdom to anyone willing to learn how to use the (very user-unfriendly) tools with which Team Meat created the game's original batch of levels. Team Meat was even was nice enough to post a few tutorial videos explaining how to access and use the tools. We're probably going to hold off for the proper level creator to get released, but hey -- if you guys want to go ahead and make a whole bunch of levels for us to enjoy, we're not going to stand in your way.

The folks at XBLA Fans have put together a fantastic Super Meat Boy bandage guide, complete with pictures and jumping guide lines. One should feel no shame in referencing it: the game stands as one of the most difficult (yet satisfying) experiences of the year.

We thought that nothing related to Super Meat Boy could possibly be more upsetting than that I Want to Be the Guy level, but there's no way we could have foreseen ... this. Graphic artist Dave Rapoza, who caught the eye of Team Meat with an equally disturbing piece of fan art earlier this year, has drawn up a new hyper-realistic design that will make its way onto the box of the Super Meat Boy PC special edition. Check out the full illustration after the jump. We can't place our finger on what makes our initial reaction to the painting one of immeasurable horror; it really is an incredibly creative and beautifully drawn interpretation of the game's tiny, pixelated lead characters. Maybe that's what's so upsetting -- we never imagined that hidden within that blocky frame was a totally ripped physique.

  • Super Meat Boy vinyl figures shipping next April, pre-order now

Symbiote Studios is producing two different 8" vinyls of beefy hero Super Meat Boy. Both the "Normal Meat Boy" and the tenderized "Beat Up Meat Boy" are available now for pre-order, cost $40, have a limited run of 250 copies apiece and will make their way home to you next April. Both editions of the vinyl have movable arms and come in a box designed by Team Meat. Why is it going to take until next April for the dolls to ship? Because every one of the "Beat Up Meat Boys" has to be abused by hand. Sad, we know. Still adorable.

  • Tofu Boy being added to Super Meat Boy PC in next patch

Team Meat has cheekily responded to yesterday's PETA Super Tofu Boy parody by announcing that it will add the soy-based protagonist as a downloadable character in the next Super Meat Boy PC patch. The character will only be available on PC, since the XBLA can't be patched in the same fashion. In a blog post, Team Meat's Edmund McMillen said he "repeatedly made fake user names" in PETA's forums, trying to push the game in hopes of a response. Well, he got one -- and so did they. McMillen added that the parody was "beyond flattering and amazingly helpful," but also had some harsh words for PETA's stance on animal testing. He also reiterated, just in case some folks weren't aware, that Meat Boy isn't actually made of animal meat, "he's simply a boy without skin." And here come the Robbie Williams "Rock DJ" flashbacks again. Update: According to Team Meat, the "bit malnourished" Tofu Boy will be playable by typing "petaphile" at the character select screen following the next Steam update.

In yet another Xbox Live Arcade deal, Microsoft is now offering a free batch of 400 MS Points for purchasing two qualifying XBLA games. Don't run off downloading games just yet though, because you'll need to head over to the Xbox Live Events page and download the Arcade Offer gamer picture to register for the giveaway first (the direct link to the gamer picture is currently broken, but it's the first one listed on the events page). Once that's done, snag two of the games listed after the break (including favorites like Limbo, Lara Croft, Monday Night Combat, Super Meat Boy and more). Within four weeks, the free points will be added to registered Live accounts automatically or sent as redemption code via email. If you're planning to pick up any of the eligible games, you might as well get some free points too, right? The promotion ends December 20, so get to it. [Thanks, Grand Kerfuffle]

Animal activist organization PETA has released its latest parody, Super Tofu Boy, an extra firm lampoon of the beefy Super Meat Boy. Using the basic gameplay of the superb platformer as its inspiration, PETA's take has Tofu Boy saving Bandage Girl from Meat Boy, who has kidnapped his now ex-girlfriend for dumping him for the silken lover. Even if you don't believe that delicious, raw meat is "bad," Tofu Boy is still an amusing distraction, even if it's ultimately a processed imitation. We've contacted Team Meat to find out if Meat Boy has a response. You may recall that Cooking Mama found her PETA parody quite "runderful." Update: Team Meat's Edmund McMillen wrote back to tell us he finds PETA's attention "extremely flattering." He expressed, "For them to do a parody of Meat Boy during our launch week on Steam... there's no way we can complain about that." He did note, however, they had beaten PETA to the Tofu Boy gag with a comic for their beefy bundle of joy.

You may not be familiar with RunMan: Race Around the World, "a totally awesome platform game" created by Matt Thorson and Tom Sennet, but sadists the world over will get a fresh look at the titular character when Super Meat Boy brings its blend of punishment and pleasure to the PC. He's the second-to-last mystery character in the PC port, revealed today via the IndieGames blog, and sports a speed burst ability (natch). Oh, you had no idea? Yeah, RunMan is fast. So, in case you were looking to keep score: on top of RunMan, we've also got headcrabs and goo, a robot, Captain Viridian and the Minecraft dude. Sheesh -- who's next, our own JC Fletcher? Hey, some poor Nintendo intern already did all of the heavy lifting. Just an idea! Update: Aaand ... it's Naija! Who? From Aquaria, duh. Additionally, we'd also like to point out that you can now pre-order the Steam game here for 33 percent off the sticker price, for a limited time. Basically, its the same thing they did for Xbox Live.

  • Super Meat Boy's 'Sewers of Dross' DLC now available, Team Meat details five more additions

"Teh Internets" of Super Meat Boy got an additional 20 levels of precision platforming madness this morning, with "The Sewers of Dross." The free pack features Gish as the only playable character, leading the character-specific DLC charge for SMB. Free DLC chapters made specifically for Commander Video and The Kid will also be made available in early 2011, along with a "best of" user-submitted level pack, featuring 20 levels created by PC/Mac players. Two non-character-specific DLC packs will arrive via "Teh Internets" in December: Meat Boy (a retro chapter "based on the best of the Meat Boy flash prototype") and I Meat Boy (a pack of remixed levels from the main game, made more difficult). As Team Meat's Edmund McMillen explains in the comments of the announcement post, some of these DLC packs will be available on PC and Mac as well, but some (TSoD, for example) won't make it due to exclusivity agreements with Microsoft -- Gish is exclusive to Xbox 360.%Gallery-108015%

  • Super Meat Boy PC launch joined by headcrabs, goo

    11.16.2010

Super Meat Boy will land with a squelch on PC on November 30. Pre-orders will open on November 23 for $10, after which the game will launch for $15. Early buyers should have enough money left over to pick up a pound of prime ground chuck at the market for burgers. If you buy Super Meat Boy through Valve's Steam service, you'll receive Half-Life's hideous (but sort of adorable) headcrab as a playable character. All non-Steam purchases on PC and Mac will receive a Goo from World of Goo. Either character will replace Gish as the first unlockable (via bandage collection) bonus character. As for which version to purchase, Team Meat is apparently very fond of Valve's digital distribution service, saying, "We LOVE Steam...like...a lot. MS is the hot chick you hook up with, Steam is the girl you spend your life with." We wonder where WiiWare must sit on that spectrum after those development challenges?

Super Meat Boy's XBLA launch sale will conclude in six days, on November 21. After that (barring deal of the week promotions) the difficult and rewarding platformer will cost $15/lb. (one pound minimum order). Even if you have a backlog of titles at the moment, it's worth picking up the excellent game for $10 and putting it in the Xbox freezer until you're ready to play. It won't get freezer burn and thaws just as fresh. %Gallery-103429%

    11.11.2010

Team Meat has posted a rather lengthy update on all things Super Meat Boy. First, the upcoming update for the XBLA version of the game "is being submitted" to Microsoft and the team hopes it will be available by November 21. The update should fix all known bugs in the game, wipe out all 0.0 clear times from the Xbox Live leaderboards and add a new music track. It will also add 20 new levels to 'Teh Internets,' all designed exclusively for the sticky black ball of goo, Gish. Entitled "The Sewers of Dross," the levels range from "medium to soul crushing" in difficulty. On the PC front, Team Meat has revealed the silhouette of another exclusive character. We're not sure who it is, though it kinda looks like Penny Arcade's Fruit F**ker without any legs (we'd hate to imagine what his special ability would be). Team Meat also dropped a few hints on the remaining characters: "one of them sticks, one of them dashes, one of them changes form and one of them isn't organic." Finally, the team hopes to release the PC version of Super Meat Boy in the last week of November. The level editor -- including "some kind of portal enabling players to easily view and rate user made levels" -- should follow in December.

  • Super Meat Boy PC's first eight 'rejected' Achievements revealed

Above, you can find eight images representing new Achievements in the Steam version of Super Meat Boy, revealed via the @SuperMeatBoy Twitter account. The mesmerizing exercise in frustration and pleasure in attempting to safely escort a small meat object through the worst real estate ever is available on Xbox 360 right now. Eventually, it will come to the PC, boasting additional characters and levels, but also 30+ Achievements to unlock on Steam, "most rejected by MS for their difficulty." Today, the @SuperMeatBoy account revealed the above image, asking fans to guess which each represents. A later tweet provided hope of a Steam launch date "in a week," while a subsequent tweet offered clues for unrevealed characters.

Another indie hero has joined the Super Meat Boy collective: VVVVVV's blocky, gravity-ignoring explorer Captain Viridian. Viridian will join Mr. Minecraft as one of the new characters exclusive to the PC version of Super Meat Boy. You've killed him thousands of times in VVVVVV (and if you haven't, you should totally check out the demo), now you'll get to watch him fail fatally over and over again in a new venue! It sounds like you'll manipulate Viridian in the same manner as VVVVVV, changing gravity to allow him to walk on either the ceiling or the floor. "He has one of the most game breaking powers yet," Team Meat said about the new character on Twitter. "He flips." As a result, he will require "a ton" of bandages to unlock.

  • Super Meat Boy XBLA patch near completion, includes 20 new levels

Team Meat is wrapping up the Super Meat Boy patch that addresses the auto-save glitch and, in fact, "all known bugs" in the Xbox Live Arcade game. The free title update will also include 20 new levels and a new music track, Team Meat tweets, and it's expected to be completed this week and "hopefully will be up soon" (pending Microsoft's approval). Also, if for some really stupid reason you haven't picked up the game yet -- those few bugs be damned -- the launch sale is still "going for another week" (from yesterday). In other Meat Boy news: The Steam release for PC is still being targeted for the last week of November (with the Mac version coming "after" that). Over the past few days, Team Meat has peppered the @SuperMeatBoy feed with irresistible morsels plucked from the Steam game: 30-plus achievements, "most rejected by MS for their difficulty"? Check! Level editor? You betcha. Mr. Minecraft and five additional "exclusive" characters that'll make you change your pants? Uh-huh -- and that's not even counting the returning warp zone unlockables. Yeah but, how about a launch sale for this Steam version? No doubt. Okay, that does it! We're buying Super Meat Boy ... again. Yes, "buy em both!" agrees Team Meat. "2 almost identical games for 1/3rd the price of Fallout New Vegas! So worth it .... (no seriously it's worth it)." • Team Meat considering retail for Super Meat Boy on Wii

    11.03.2010

Sure, we appreciate the fact that Team Meat's Super Meat Boy was conveniently downloaded onto our Xbox 360, but that doesn't do much to satisfy our unending urge to lovingly squeeze the game box ever so tightly. At the moment, there's nothing we can do about this (and no, not any old game box would do) -- but this may change. Tweeting from the Super Meat Boy account, the game's devs publicly wondered, "If we decided to try to find a publisher and do a boxed version for $20 (with extras) but come out later on the Wii, would you hold out?" It seems that the tweet was at least partially in reaction to the game's WiiWare delay, said to be due to size constraints. One thing the folks at Team Meat certainly won't be doing? Splitting the game into chapters for digital release. "No split. It isn't as easy as 'cut it into parts.' The logistics of that are insane. That would push it out farther than a retail release," the devs also tweeted. "We will figure this WiiWare issue out soon," Team Meat assured. "Should have official updates in a few weeks." Until then, well, we'll be playing ... Super Meat Boy.

  • Super Meat Boy won't make Nov. on Wiiware, PC still on track

Bad news, Super Meat Fans. Team Meat has tweeted that Super Meat Boy will not make its planned November release on WiiWare. The team notes that a November release would be "impossible" and that the game hasn't been compressed beneath the WiiWare file size limit. Team Meat is shooting for a final size of 39MB, though it has yet to compress it down to 50MB. Another tweet states that the Team is looking to compress 700MB worth of data, and it's worth noting that the XBLA version released last month clocks in at just over 90MB. Meanwhile, the PC version (with Minecraft guy!) is still set to arrive on Steam during the last week of November. We realize it won't make up for the lack of meaty goodness on Wii, but perhaps you could console yourself with a Meat Boy plushie? [Thanks, John. Above: Our unofficial Meat Boy expresses his disappointment.]
