After more than ten years devoted to video games and the people who make them, Joystiq is closing its doors. We won't be reporting on the best games of 2015, so join us for one last hurrah as the Joystiq family reveals their Games of a Lifetime. Super Mario World I'm not a marathon video game player – for me, binging on or tirelessly replaying masterpieces downplays the great moments within, tainting them with an undeserved state of blandness. And yet, there is something about Super Mario World's construct that is immune to my fickle play style. Though I've been hurling Luigi down pits since I was old enough to earn player 2 privileges, Super Mario World is a ceaseless joy to return to, even if an encore ensues moments after besting Bowser with a few well-aimed Mechakoopas. I'm inclined to most romps through the Mushroom Kingdom, but Super Mario World's memorable level design, subtle secrecy and introduction of the greatest power-up of all time elevate it above every other Mario Bros outing. Above all else, it's the king of fun within my gaming career – there is not a moment coded into that rackety cartridge that isn't bliss to play, even when a pack of Rip Van Fish inspire a spike of stress with their chase. Super Mario World was, is and probably always will be my hometown in the world of video games, and I look forward to reveling in nostalgia as I shove a pack of kids into their lava-filled demise during future homecomings.

Recent years have seen more games added closer to the event, though a roster of nine is already on the high end for an EVO championship. Whatever the full line-up proves to be, it's coming to the Bally's/Paris Las Vegas Casino, where the world's fighting game specialists will duke it out across July 17-19.

Nintendo will sponsor Apex 2015, a competitive gaming series that will include tournaments for every Super Smash Bros. title released on home consoles as well as games like Ultra Street Fighter 4, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Pokemon Omega Ruby & Pokemon Alpha Sapphire. Apex shared the news on Twitter, noting that Nintendo would help the series put on an "incredible" Smash Bros. event. Apex 2015's tournaments will run from January 30 – February 1, 2015 at the Clarion Hotel in Secaucus, New Jersey. If you're unable to attend, you can still check the event schedule and tune into one of the Twitch channels that will be covering the event. Nintendo's sponsorship is a welcome gesture of embracing the competitive fighting scene, especially when considering its alleged attempts to shut down the Smash Bros. Melee division of EVO 2013. Nintendo did eventually give the go-ahead to feature Melee in the tournament as well as EVO 2013's streaming schedule, but it's nice to see the developer stepping up its support for third-party tournaments from the get-go. Do you want to take on the challengers of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U with a sense of fa-melee-iarity? Good news: third-party accessory manufacturer PDP is working with Nintendo to produce the Wired Fight Pad, a controller designed after the original, fan-favorite GameCube controller. The Wired Fight Pad will connect via a Wii Remote's bottom port, so you'll already need to own said Remote to use the Fight Pad. The good news is, that means it's also compatible with the Wii. The Wired Fight Pad will work with any of that system's games that support the Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro. The Wired Fight Pad is set to release alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with an estimated price of $24.99. We've been told to expect Smash sometime this winter. [Image: Nintendo]

  • Super Smash Bros. Melee returns to EVO 2014

Super Smash Bros. Melee has been added to the fighting roster for 2014's Evolution World Finals, to be held on July 11-13 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The GameCube incarnation of Smash Bros. will anchor competitive matches for a second year in a row, following its nearly controversial appearance last year. Nearly – as in Nintendo made and then quickly belayed a decree preventing tournament organizers from streaming Melee matches online. If you're wondering why EVO's game of choice is Super Smash Bros. Melee, which is older than Brawl and more ... released than 2014's game for Wii U and 3DS, it's time to read up on tripping mechanics. Plus, "melee" just sounds like the most erudite way to describe a violent clash of plumbers, gorillas, princesses, plumbers pretending to be doctors, interstellar bounty hunters - oh, and two cute kids wielding massive mallets. • EVO 2014 line-up announced, Super Smash Bros. Melee being discussed

Ultra Street Fighter 4 is one of six confirmed games for this year's Evolution Championship Series, but Super Smash Bros. Melee is a doubt. Event organizer Shoryuken revealed it's in "preliminary discussions" with Nintendo about featuring the GameCube brawler in the fighting game tournament, following the stir its inclusion caused last year. Melee was the eighth game to be included in last year's line-up, after it won a fan vote that raised $225,724 for breast cancer research. However, a few months after Nintendo moved to claim revenue on Let's Play videos featuring its games, the company requested Melee be removed from the EVO 2013 streaming line-up. The move was received with an immediate backlash, and Nintendo swiftly reversed its decision. The circumstances are different this time-around. For one, Melee is just another potential game in the line-up, not one voted for by fans with charity money behind it. Still, it'll be interesting to see which way Nintendo swings on approval this time, especially in the same year that a new Super Smash Bros. game is set to arrive on Wii U and 3DS. As for the rest, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Killer Instinct, and Blazblue: Chrono Phantasma join Ultra Street Fighter 4 as newbies to the championships, while King of Fighters 13 and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 return from last year's selection. The event itself takes place on July 11-13 at the LVH Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, but if you can't make it to Nevada you can always tune in on Twitch. [Image: Shoryuken]

  • Nintendo wanted to remove Smash Bros. from EVO entirely, organizer says

Super Smash Bros. Melee's triumphant return to the stage during this weekend's EVO 2013 fighting game tournament was in greater jeopardy than originally thought, according to statements made by EVO organizer and co-founder Joey Cuellar during a recent episode of Live On Three. "They were not only trying to shut down the stream, they were trying to shut down the event, the smash portion of the event," Cuellar said. "It's their IP, they can do what they want and they didn't present us with any options to keep it open." Cuellar added that after negotiations, EVO was able to reach an agreement with Nintendo that allowed Smash to be kept at the tournament, but not broadcast to the rest of the Internet. "We're not going to press it any further, it's their IP," he added, relaying his attitude at the time. "We respect Nintendo's decision to protect their IP, and we're going to comply with their legal department completely." Of course, that compromise was quickly revised after the fighting game community's reaction to the announcement. Cuellar said that no efforts were made on his end after the initial agreement with Nintendo had been made, so its decision to allow streaming for Smash had to have been in response to other, outside factors. "We're super grateful to Nintendo for letting us do it," he said.

  • Super Smash Bros Melee returned to EVO 2K13 streaming [update]

Update: Well, fighting game tournaments are all about swift reversals. Nintendo has sent word that the Super Smash Bros. Melee stream will be allowed to proceed as organizers intended. Original story: Super Smash Bros. Melee will no longer be part of EVO 2K13's streaming schedule, as per Nintendo's request. Shoryuken reports that Melee will be replaced by a mixture of Persona 4 Arena and King of Fighters XIII. Adding an extra level of pain to the entire situation is the nearly $100,000 the Melee community raised for breast cancer research, in the hopes that Melee would be a featured game during the EVO 2K13 streams. Nintendo recently started cracking down on broadcasters posting footage of its games online. In May, Nintendo hit "Let's Play" videos on YouTube – essentially narrated game walkthroughs – with mass revenue claims. EVO 2K13 is this year's installment in the prominent EVO championship series of fighting game tournaments. EVO 2K13 will take place the weekend of July 12 at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. [Thanks, Stephen.]

EVO 2013's charity fundraising competition for the benefit of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation has come to a close, raising an astonishing $225,744 for the cause. The Super Smash Bros. Melee community, having raised the most money out of the competing groups ($94,683), will have its game of choice featured as the eighth official EVO 2013 tournament selection.Of course, reaching the fundraiser's herculean total required the efforts of fighting game communities from all walks. Skullgirls faithfuls piled up $78,760, for instance, while Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo devotees brought in $39,567.The full list of contributors can be found after the break, and while not every community was able to reach a five-figure sum, every bit matters in the fight against cancer. Good game, everyone.

  • Sakurai describes 'grueling development' of Smash Bros. Melee

If you own a GameCube, odds are you probably have a copy of Smash Bros. Melee, arguably the platform's greatest game. It sold like it was, anyway -- over seven million copies were moved worldwide. Those sales were the fruit of what Sakurai says was a "grueling development cycle," very different from how he crafted the follow-up, Smash Bros. Brawl. Honestly, he's kinda underselling it. "I worked on that game for 13 months straight, after all, without a single Sunday or holiday off that whole time," Sakurai recalls in a Famitsu interview translated by 1UP. "During parts of it, I was living a really destructive lifestyle -- I'd work for over 40 hours in a row, then go back home to sleep for four," he added. Putting himself through the grinder like this stemmed from concerns about spearheading the massive undertaking, which Sakurai called the biggest project he'd ever worked on. Today, he looks back on it as "the sharpest game in the series," adding that it's "speedy all around and asks a lot of your coordination skills." To him, "it just felt really good to play" and was the most hardcore entry to date. As for his latest, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it was more an attempt to find some middle-ground and present a more accessible game -- and to finally help us solve one of gaming's greatest debates, of course.

  • Nintendo DS worldwide software sales [Update 1]

    08.02.2006

Coming off the staggering news that the Nintendo DS is the fastest selling system of all time in Japan, we've got another doozy for you. Here are the current estimated numbers for worldwide sales for Nintendo DS software: Nintendogs - 7.37 million Animal Crossing: Wild World - 4.66 million Mario Kart DS - 4.64 million New Super Mario Bros - 3.84 million Super Mario 64 DS - 3.76 million Brain Training - 3.69 million Brain Training 2 - 3.11 million Wario Ware Touched - 1.97 million Brain Flex - 1.58 million Tamogotchi Connection: Corner Shop - 1.27 million Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time - 1.22 million Tetris DS - 1.19 million English Training - 1.14 million Utterly astonishing are the figures for Nintendogs, selling over seven million copies since its release in mid-2005. The best-selling game on Gamecube, Super Smash Bros: Melee, has been around since 2001 and has only managed to sell 6.05 million by comparison. Nintendo is indeed reaching a new audience, and that new audience seems to really like throwing frisbees with a stylus.[Update 1: Apparently, many people missed the "estimated" at the top of the post. Though compiled by an individual, the numbers appear to be at least decently accurate after cross-referencing several other sources. Take the numbers with a grain of salt, and enjoy the picture of the cute puppy.]
