As Ford notches its 115th anniversary, the company celebrated its purchase of an iconic Detroit landmark with an eye toward the "smart cities" future we heard about at CES. Michigan Central Station served as a main passenger hub for the city once it opened in 1913, but the train station and 18-story office tower has been empty and unused since 1988. Now a massive restoration project will make the building a part of Ford's planned Corktown campus, with 2,500 Ford employees working in the area by 2022 plus 2,500 employees of other businesses.

At its NAIAS 2018 preview event, Ford just dropped a few details about an electric vehicle it plans to release in 2020. The "Mach 1" (cribbing its name from the famous Mustang model) is an all-electric performance SUV under development by Team Edison in Ford's recently-opened Corktown facility. It won't be the company's only EV either, as chairman Bill Ford revealed the company plans to have 40 electric vehicles by 2022 while investing $11 billion in them.

There's little doubt at this point that electric cars are the future, but how do you get to that future as quickly as possible? To Ford, it's a matter of finding the right friends. In a Reuters interview, Ford's Sherif Marakby says the company has created "Team Edison," a group focused on speeding up the worldwide development of electric vehicles -- including by forming partnerships with suppliers and other companies. The aim is to "look holistically" at the EV space and "make quicker" decisions to keep pace with the development of EV technology.
