  • Ni-Oh returns as Team Ninja collaboration

Buried beneath all the Ninja Gaiden 3 hoopla, GamePro reports Team Ninja today revealed a collaboration with developer Kou Shibusawa on a "samurai action" game. The cause is noble indeed, as it would seem Team Ninja will help finish Ni-Oh -- a sort of "Duke Nukem Forever" project that's been simmering on Tecmo Koei's back burner for years. First teased at TGS 2006, Ni-Oh has undergone a long, sheltered development, earning a brief mention in an April 2009 issue of Famitsu -- and nary a word since. Team Ninja did not confirm whether the game will remain exclusive to PS3 and wisely made no guarantees on a release date. [Wikipedia says: Ni-Oh was original conceived as a multimedia project that would include a film based on a lost Kurosawa script. The movie was eventually canned.]

  • Ninja Gaiden 3 announced

Tecmo Koei revealed Ninja Gaiden 3 during a behind-closed door event today (in conjunction with TGS), reports VideoGamer.com. The announcement was accompanied by a teaser image showing blood-soaked franchise protagonist Ryu Hayabusa removing his mask. According to VideoGamer, the image represents themes that will be explored in the new sequel: both the "human side" of Ryu and a "more violent and bloody experience" (if you can believe it). Neither platforms nor further release information was given. Shortly before E3 last year, Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi talked up his studio's commitment to furthering the Ninja Gaiden series. Today's reveal is the first hard evidence of Ninja Gaiden 3 since that time. Update: GamePro confirms the reveal went down at a private event hosted by Team Ninja, and adds that Ninja Gaiden 3 "is so early in development, the developer only showed journalists a piece of concept art" (above; see a bigger version after the break).

Here's why complaining about sequels is tough. When a company makes a sequel, gaming zealots get upset. When they decide to try something new and ditch the main character for some new guy, fans get upset. Guys, you can't have it both ways! Except you can, as Capcom evidenced by revealing its Xbox Live-exclusive "epilogue" Dead Rising 2: Case West. In this downloadable extension to this month's zombie-filled sequel, Frank and new guy Chuck team up to mess up some zombies. See what they're up to in the trailer after the break, or the screens right there. %Gallery-102314%

Our TGS liveblog didn't exactly capture how crazy Asura's Wrath -- the upcoming collaboration between Capcom and CyberConnect 2 -- really is. Imagine taking the over-the-top action of the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series, mixing in a ton of violence, all rendered with the power of the Unreal Engine. Oh, and did we mention the giant space Buddha statue thingy? Yeah, there's that too. %Gallery-102298%

Announced just moments ago at Capcom's pre-TGS press conference, here's just about everything we know about Ninja Theory's "reboot" of Devil May Cry: a trailer. Found after the break, this trailer (and the accompanying screens and artwork) share a new look for Dante, and a new direction for the franchise. Let's make this scientific, though. What do you think of the Devil May Cry reboot? %Gallery-102294%

  • New Devil May Cry in Ninja Theory's hands

It was no coincidence that a new Ninja Theory game announcement and a "DMC" trademark were discovered at the same time. Capcom has confirmed that Enslaved/Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory is applying its expertise to demon hunting, with a trailer for DmC: Devil May Cry. What, no number? It's a "rebirth of Devil May Cry," starring a younger Dante who may or may not be experiencing the events in the game for real, judging from the appearance in the trailer of a chained character who may be hallucinating. "We're hoping to make a game that even Capcom can be proud of," Ninja Theory director Tameem Antoniades said on stage. No wonder -- there's good money in pleasing Capcom.

Capcom apparently really liked Blue Castle Games' work on Dead Rising 2, as the publisher just revealed at TGS that it has purchased the Canadian developer. Keiji Inafune, Managing Corporate Officer of Capcom, said the publisher made the acquisition because the future of Capcom will require working with other developers on games that feel like they were made in Japan, but also have that Western je ne sais quoi. The studio will henceforth be known as Capcom Game Studios Vancouver. Taking the stage after the announcement, Rob Barret, president/CEO of Blue Castle Games, said, "We take this responsibility very seriously. Capcom games have a certain flavor ... we don't just want to make amazing games, we want to make amazing Capcom games." Phew, that's a relief. Good thing Capcom bought the company then -- would have been awkward if Blue Castle wanted to make amazing Konami games.

CyberConnect2, creators of the .hack series and various Naruto games, is working on a new PS3/Xbox 360 game for Capcom. Asura's Wrath was announced a few minutes ago at Capcom's pre-TGS event. The game, which the director says involves "serialized drama," is an action title built in Unreal Engine 3. Speaking of "unreal," he said that "What we're bringing to this game is a brand new style that will have you questioning whether or not you're even playing a game ... sometimes even we're confused if what we're making is a game." Gameplay footage revealed a character unconcerned with numerous sword wounds, destroying enemies with a giant sword of his own.

Capcom just announced at TGS that the Dead Rising 2: Case Zero prologue sold over 500,000 copies in under 2 weeks. With that knowledge, one can understand why they'd do an epilogue such as: Dead Rising 2: Case West. Keiji Inafune revealed that the downloadable episode will take place after the events of Dead Rising 2 and, as teased, will feature Frank West (of the original Dead Rising) working with latest protaganist Chuck Greene. Inafune concluded, "Apologies to PS3 fans, but this too will be an Xbox 360 exclusive." We'll update as we learn more.

By some miracle, we made it to the Capcom event clear across Tokyo. No biggie. They're not letting press in yet – our casual entrance and brief observation of the rehearsal was met with several hurried PR handlers – but we thought we'd share this snap of the flower arrangement outside the venue: Capcom TGS 2010 and Epic Games Japan. With the news that Capcom is looking to western devs to handle its franchises, we're wondering if it somehow snagged one of gaming's highest profile developers. Or maybe it's just an Unreal Engine licensing thing. The press conference kicks off in about an hour, so check back!

"We've had you waiting for a long time." Grasshopper Manufacture's Suda 51 and Platinum's Shinji Mikami took the stage at EA's TGS showcase to reveal Shadows of the Damned, a new "psychological action thriller" from EA's Partners division. According to Suda, he and Mikami wanted to make this game for a long time, and searched for the right publisher to bring it to a global audience. "Finally, today, we can reveal our game that we've been working on together with EA," he said. The game is expected to release in 2011. EA Partners announced this new horror franchise in August 2008, under the direction of game "auteurs" Suda and Shinji Mikami. Since then, Grasshopper has increased its roster of stars with musician Akira Yamaoka and designer Kazutoshi Iida, released No More Heroes 2, and announced the downloadable Sine Mora. in this game, a character named Garcia travels to Hell to rescue his love. Hopefully, this will be a bit classier than Dante's Inferno... Update: Trailer now available.

We just received screenshots in advance of EA's TGS event -- we're literally sitting in the audience waiting for it right now -- and we've already spotted a bit of news. Included among the assets are screenshots of a game called My Garden for 3DS. We'll learn more about the game when EA actually, you know, announces it, but it's pretty self-explanatory: a garden simulator -- in THREE DEE. Like a real garden, but without that noisome sunlight! And also with a cartoon tanuki guiding you. Our garden doesn't do that. At least, we don't think so. Update: An EA producer just showed the game, in which players unlock plants by completing photo-based goals. It'll be out alongside the 3DS, whenever that is released.%Gallery-102257%

  • New Ninja Theory game to be announced at TGS, as Capcom trademarks 'DMC'

If you read the May issue of Game Informer, this rumor might sound familiar: Ninja Theory, developer of PS3 exclusive Heavenly Sword and the promising Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, may be tasked with creating a new entry in Capcom's Devil May Cry franchise (last seen in 2008). Capcom has repeatedly expressed interest in leaving some of its established franchises in the hands of Western studios, with Bionic Commando and Dead Rising all finding homes outside of Japan. The rumor has found its way back into circulation, thanks to a tweet and a trademark. According to Ninja Theory's Twitter account, a new game from the team is set to be announced at Tokyo Game Show, which opens on September 16th. Before that, however, Capcom will hold a press conference (a few hours away at the time of writing) and announce several new titles -- and "DMC" may be one of them. According to Siliconera, Capcom has filed a wide-ranging trademark for "DMC," covering everything from game software to mobile phone ringtones. The trademark isn't enough to reveal a collusion between Capcom and Ninja Theory (let alone a new Devil May Cry game), but it raises an interesting question: Will Andy Serkis play Dante or Nero?

We've got three Tokyo Game Show liveblogs coming in the next 24 hours, so we thought we'd list the URLs here so you can bookmark and come back. Electronic Arts is the first to go, and we know it's going to be showing off the long-awaited Shinji Mikami, Suda 51 EA Partners horror project. But that's not it! There are supposedly "several all new game reveals and announcements," but we're not sure if that includes the Zelda-esque Tsumuji. It can't be a reveal if you've already announced the game, no? Electronic Arts TGS 2010 liveblog Wednesday, 5pm – Tokyo Wednesday, 4am ET – New York Wednesday, 1am PT – Los Angeles Capcom is next and @CapcomEuro is guessing that we'll see "4 new games announced" and some new Marvel vs. Capcom 3 characters and we're guessing that its guesses are better than our guesses. We may be hearing about a new, Western-developed Devil May Cry, with Enslaved developer Ninja Theory behind the helm. Capcom TGS 2010 keynote Wednesday, 8pm – Tokyo Wednesday, 7am ET – New York Wednesday, 4am PT – Los Angeles Lastly, Microsoft is bringing a little bit of the west with its Tokyo Game Show keynote titled "Xbox 360's Vision and 2010's Strategy." In what has become one of our favorite annual traditions, Japanese mag Famitsu has already begun unfurling announcements intended for the Tokyo Game Show, which kicks off this Thursday, September 16. Sega already revealed Valkyria Chronicles 3 (inadvertently), and Famitsu has confirmed it as a retail and downloadable PSP game set to debut in Japan on January 27, 2011. According to an Andriasang translation, Valkyria Chronicles 3 will be set in the same time period as the original PlayStation 3 game, but will follow a new cast of characters and a group dubbed "The Nameless." That's ... their name. Sega of America has yet to announce an English version of this strategy RPG, possibly because the higher-ups in the company haven't read the latest Famitsu yet.

Square Enix has released the first images of Dissidia: Final Fantasy sequel Dissidia: Duodecim this morning, also announcing the game as playable at this year's Tokyo Game Show. Unfortunately for Dissidia fans, nothing firmer than the already revealed "2011" release window was given. Acclaimed character designer Tetsuya Nomura will once again lend his talents to the Dissidia franchise, which can be seen in the first four pieces of art from the game in our gallery below. The only two characters revealed thus far are FFIV's Kain and FFXIII's Lightning, but we're sure to hear about more as TGS opens this week.%Gallery-102167%

Tucked away in this morning's press release revealing the 250GB Xbox 360 with Kinect bundle was news that, at this year's Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft will be showing off new Kinect games. The release says that the company will unveil "even more new controller-free games and experiences never before possible," without making any mention of the Microsoft-hosted keynote or the recently announced brain game from Dr. Kawashima and Namco. At the very least, we know to expect dozens -- if not hundreds -- of videos showing Japanese people waving their arms and legs about, trying desperately to maintain control while piloting Kinect-based games. We can hardly wait.

  • Ace Attorney Investigations 2 announced, coming to TGS

    09.08.2010

Sure, the weather in Tokyo may be frightful right now, but there's good reason to fly over for TGS. The latest issue of Famitsu has revealed a sequel to Edgeworth-starring adventure Ace Attorney Investigations. According to a Siliconera report, Capcom's new courtroom caper will include new kinds of game systems, including one that's supposedly chess-like. (How appropriate!) Further investigation has yet to reveal additional details, but we can deduce using logic (and enthusiasm) that Ace Attorney fans will demand an English localization. Any rebuttals?
