I think I can actually begin to feel the excitement of the Tokyo Game Show emanating to me through the internet. And it seems Gamespot feels the same as they've listed their most anticipated games to be shown at TGS.They listed four handheld games they are most excited about are Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Lumines II, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, which just so happens to be the only Nintendo DS game to make the list. Take that you blasted Nintendo fanboys!(Via Gamespot)

  • Umbrella Chronicles: Wii's Resident Evil or memoirs of a flying nanny?

CVG reports, via Famitsu, that Capcom will name Wii's upcoming Resident Evil title 'Umbrella Chronicles,' suggesting a focus on ruthless biotech company Umbrella Corporation -- or instead, a connection to the flying English nanny known as Mary Poppins. How's it go? 'A spoonful of sugar helps the T-virus go down' ... er ... something ...CVG suggests, with reservation, that Chronicles will trace Umbrella's sordid past leading up to the events of Resident Evil 4 and will attempt to tie together certain elements of previous Resident Evil titles. As such, Chronicles would likely feature key locales from past games -- and perhaps new ones, like #17 Cherry-Tree Lane. Capcom is expected to blow the lid off 'dis sucka at TGS. Stay tuned -- we'll be there.

  • TGS: Koei to show *yawn* Wii Dynasty Warriors, PS3 concepts are *fingers crossed* more original

Koei has revealed plans to preview Sengoku Musou Wave (Dynasty Warriors) for Wii at Tokyo Game Show. So what's more tired than another "historical" hack n' slash sequel? How about a mahjong game based on a "historical" hack n' slash series? Yep, Koei will also be showing off a Sengoku Musou-themed mahjong title for PSP and DS. Thankfully, Koei's PlayStation 3 support deviates from the developer's norm -- at least, in three out of four games to be featured at TGS. Most notable, but unfortunately unplayable, is Ni-Oh, billed as an action game in which bodyguard monks must defend Buddha. Of course, Koei could be tossing this concept into the Sengoku Musou engine and churning out another Dynasty clone, in which case, Koei's non-brawler offerings fall to just two, an aerial combat racing game (Fatal Inertia) and *sigh* a mahjong game (Mahjong Contest IV). Don't worry Europe, you ain't missin' much.

  • Koei and Capcom release TGS lineup

Sure, they're two different companies, but why make you read two different pieces on each when we can slap 'em both right here for you? First up is Capcom's TGS playables list: Devil May Cry 4 (PS3) Lost Planet (360) Monster Hunter Portable 2nd (PSP) Gyakuten Saiban 4 (AKA Phoenix Wright) (DS) Ryusei no Rockman (MegaMan stuff... always with the MegaMan! We want another MegaMan Legends game! Those were the best. MegaMan X, X2, X3, and X4 were good too. Heck, SNES and prior were all golden, excepting X4 of course.) Ahem. Sorry. MegaMan was one of the first dozen games every played by yours truly, so there's a bit of a loyalty and love for the games. Now then, Koei, how many Dynasty Warriors games will you be showing us? Fatal Inertia (PS3) Bladestorm (PS3) Ni-Oh (PS3) Mahjong Taikai IV (PS3) Samurai Warriors Wave (Wii) Samurai Warriors 2 Empires (PS2) Sangokushi 11 (PS2) G1 Jockey 4 2006 (PS2) Harukanaru Toki no Naka De (PS2) Dynasty Warriors Mahjong (PSP) Dynasty Warriors Mahjong (DS) Pocket Scenario Series Harukanaru Toki no Naka De (DS) Nobunaga's Ambition (PS2 and Windows) Okay, so there's more emphasis on Samurai Warriors now, but still. What think you, gentlemen and ladies? Does Koei and Capcom have a good lineup? The PS3 titles seem very tempting, and dare we say, Lost Planet does too? It does.

  • Devil May Cry 4 information leaked a tad early

Considering there is a countdown about to run out at the official Web site, we expected to get more information on the PlayStation 3's standout title Devil May Cry 4 relatively soon. But, thanks to the power of the Internet and Japanese magazines, we can get the goods just a wee bit earlier. According to a rough translation of Famitsu, this is what you're gonna get with DMC 4: The game takes place after DMC 1, but before DMC 2. You play as a new lead character by the name of Nero. Nero has devilish right arm. He can draw enemies toward himself and then throw them. The combo system has as base the one from DMC3 and they are revising/reworking details according to the fans' comment-remarks. Nero's sword has a bar. The sword has some kind of a driving force in it. It's a new way/element to enjoy the sword handling. At the Tokyo Game Show there will be real-time footage. You can view the magazine scans of the article and photos here: scan 01scan 02scan 03scan 04 It's nice to know there will be "real-time footage" at TGS, but how about some real-time gameplay on the show floor? That'd certainly be a nice way to extend the olive branch to disheartened Sony fans -- especially when you break the news to your Japanese base about getting the short end of the stick come launch day. [Thanks, Gerard Flannory]

At this month's Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix is gonna be all about the DS. Half the playable titles they plan to show are for the Nintendo handheld. Now that's what we call a coup. Look for lots of news and video later this month from Chocobo no Mahou Ehon (Chocobo and the Magic Picture Book), Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, and Final Fantasy III.We know you're especially excited about that last, since we never bring you Final Fantasy III news. We presume there will be plenty of long-awaited details on Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, but there should be some big surprises as well. How about some news on the Fall dashboard update. • Square-Enix reveals lineup, Roman Numerals grow confusing

Over at IGN, they've released the lineup of games by Square-Enix to be shown at the Tokyo Game Show. While we won't try to correct some of the Japanese translation, we think they muffed up on one of the Roman Numerals for a game. We'll display the list below.Playable games Chocobo no Mahou Ehon (DS) Dragon Quest Monsters (Mobile) Dragon Quest Monsters Joker (DS) Dragon Quest: Fushigi na Dungeon (Mobile) Final Fantasy III (DS) Final Fantasy XI (PS2, Xbox360) Front Mission 2089 (Mobile) -- darn, if only it were a new console title... Pokemate (Mobile) Project Sylpheed (Xbox 360) Seiken Densetsu IV (PS2) aka Dawn of Mana Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden (Mobile) Non-playable, video only Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PS3) Final Fantasy V Advance (GBA) Final Fantasy VI Advance (GBA) Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (PSP) -- this was written as VIII on IGN. A small error, but if anyone is a crazy FFVII fan (there are many... too many) they'd shake their heads in shame. Lots of games, none all too earth-shattering. Aside from Dawn of Mana and the videos, not much appears to be worthwhile. If only there would appear a Vagrant Story sequel. Please, Squeenix! Anything spark interest among you? Let us know.

Remember back at E3 when the Halo 3 trailer was available on Marketplace before Microsoft officially unveiled it at the show? That was only part of the barrage of E3 content that was piped directly into our 360s. It made it a cool perk to have the latest and greatest hardware, allowing thousands of 360 owners to get a piece of E3. It looks like Microsoft plans to continue that tradition at this year's Tokyo Game Show and its own X06 (I had to decline a trip to cover the latter, stupid wedding!). TGS coverage will start on September 20th and run through the 24th. X06 will run September the 25th through the 29th. There is a chance that US and European gamers won't see all the TGS coverage, but Japan got most of the E3 coverage so, it's stands to reason this will be the same. Now we can all look forward to previews of the latest and greatest. Expect more of Blue Dragon, Gears of War, Viva Piñata, Blue Dragon, Fable 2, and Blue Dragon. And, since it's TGS, you'll probably see some Blue Dragon. In all seriousness, we really dug Microsoft's coverage of the last E3 ever, and hopefully this will recapture the same excitement.[Via Xboxic]

This is all over the net, so it might as well be here too. It's not a complete list, but there are quite a few playable games coming to the Tokyo Game Show for the PS3. • Kutaragi to not make a fool of himself at the Tokyo Game Show

    07.20.2006

Ken Kutaragi, the big man at Sony, will be delivering a keynote address at the TGS entitled "Next Generation Entertainment Made By The PS3". In a sort of debate, without the actual arguing, Square-Enix head honcho Yoichi Wada will deliver a type of counter-speech entitled "The Game Industry's Potential and Problems". While being able to sit in on these speeches would be awesome, they're being given the day before the TGS opens for the public. Oh well. What could Krazy Kaptain Ken Kutaragi (not to be confused with the non-kaptained Krazy Kaz and his silly mouth) show the press? Last year Nintendo unveiled their Wiimote. That's a tough act to follow. Showing game previews is all well and good, but, isn't that what the actual TGS is for? Perhaps there's something else we overlooked about the PS3 that will be explained, (memory card saves, please! Well... some people have a lot of memory cards with a lot of data... some people.) or we could just forget about last year's big deal and let Kutaragi roll on his own. This show might just showcase some of the more coveted titles coming out for not only the PS3, but every next-gen system. Better late than never.

  • Nintendo ditches Tokyo Game Show? [Update 1]

    07.06.2006

Taking a quick glance at the list of attendees for September's Tokyo Game Show will show that Nintendo, for the second year in a row, will not have a significant showing of playable games. This is odd, considering that we're supposed to hear word on release and price for the Wii in that same month, and also with the strong amazing incredible immaculate showing that Nintendo had at E3 this year, why would they want to stop more people from getting their hands on it, especially on their home turf? Of course, the list is only final as of July 5th, so there is still time for Nintendo to hop on board, but it isn't a likely scenario that will play out.[Update: Clarified some of the post's wording. Iwata is likely to show up and give a speech -- there just won't be a giant Nintendo booth.]

This summer is shaping up to be great one, at least in terms of the number of UK gaming trade shows and conferences coming up soon. The great gaming fiasco of 2004 resulted in both of the major gaming trade shows in the UK (Game Stars Live and ECTS) being canceled when they decided to take place at exactly the same time, so it's great to finally see that the industry has picked itself up.Click continue to see a round-up of some future gaming events within the United Kingdom. Joystiq's UK contingent (consisting of Jennie and I) hopes to be able to attend as many of these events as possible so if you're also planning on attending make sure to leave us a comment. If we've missed a show or conference, let us know and I'll add your tip to the table.

  • Call of Duty 3 announced; leak confirmed [update 1]

    05.06.2006

Call of Duty 3's just been confirmed, and it looks like we were right on the money with our early leak of the WWII-related game.Back in early March, we printed the following information (and a whole lot more) on the focus of an upcoming sequel: "'CoD 3' ... is being produced by Big Red One dev Treyarch. ... The next Call of Duty World War II-based title will return gamers to the battlefields of Normandy as the Allies take on Nazi Germany to drive them out of France once and for all. This time around, American and British forces are joined by Canadian troops, Polish tanks, and French freedom fighters in a reenactment of the bloody Normandy Breakout campaign spearheaded during the summer of 1944. In the push to Paris, you'll get to choose how you approach each mission, free of menu screens and jarring non-interactive cut-scenes."Here's what IGN quoted from Activision for the announcement yesterday: "Through the eyes of four Allied soldiers, Call of Duty 3 brings players closer to the fury of combat as they fight through the Normandy Breakout, the harrowing offensive that liberated Paris and changed the fate of the world. Developed by Treyarch, Call of Duty 3 is the follow up to the #1 next-generation game and is scheduled for a 2006 release." Fingering the developer and the setting? Not too shabby -- while Joystiq pats itself on the back.Check out the IGN trailer below for a first-person look somewhat reminiscent of the FPS sequence in the Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer from TGS. At the end of the "official E3 teaser" trailer, a number of platforms are listed, with the major manufacturers (including a small "Nintendo Revolution" in text) and publisher/developer combo listed. We suspect that versions for the PC and possibly the current-gen consoles will be covered with ports as well. Now all we have to do is wait for the word on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. (Infinity Ward, we're looking at you!) More info obviously hitting at E3.[Thanks, icemorebutts, jason, & Hiro Protagonist][Update 1: Had to fix a verb. • Sony to strut PS3 at the other TGS?

    02.09.2006

Sony is devoting one quarter of its booth space at the Taipei Game Show (the other TGS) to the PlayStation 3, according to the Chinese-language Commercial Times. It is not clear if Sony intends on displaying the unit behind glass, with nothing playable and no demos, similar to the console's appearance at CES. Considering the torrent of info unleashed from magazine scans lately, it sounds like Sony may be ready to give us more than a little peak. Heck, one quarter of their booth sounds like Sony is gonna be a little frisky.[Thanks, mike]
