Scavengers Studio made its battle royale brawler Darwin Project free-to-play for PC in April, leaving Xbox players wondering if they have no choice but to pay $15 for it. Turns out they won't have to pay a cent either: starting on July 4th, 2018, the post-apocalyptic survival game will also be free-to-play for the Xbox One. While the developers didn't expound on their reasoning behind the move, Creative Director Simon Darveau admitted when they made the game free for PC that they needed to entice new players. Current members had been reporting "longer queue times and difficulty finding matches in lesser populated servers," and they were at risk of losing them, as well.

It's tough to compete in the battle royale world, especially with Fortnite in the room. How do you convince players to try your game if they aren't immediately enraptured? Scavengers Studio knows how: give it away. The company has turned E3 darling The Darwin Project into a free-to-play title, with a new customization progression system coming on April 24th. Scavengers isn't shy about the reasoning, noting that a lack of players on some servers led to longer queues and trouble finding matches for the survival-themed brawler.

Been waiting for Scavengers Studio's Darwin Project ever since it stole the spotlight at last year's Microsoft E3 conference? Don't worry: your wait is almost over. The early access version of the Hunger Games-style battle royale title will be available for purchase on Windows 10 and Xbox Game Preview, the platform's pre-release program for Xbox One, on March 9th. Darwin Project is a multiplayer game that combines various aspects of popular titles in the genre, such as Don't Starve and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. In our previous write-up, Engadget Senior Reporter Jessica Conditt described the game as "Katniss Everdeen running around Pochinki Hill, chopping down trees like Wilson the Gentleman Scientist."

Scavengers Studio's The Darwin Project garnered a lot of buzz at E3, and for good reason: it combined the trendy battle royale action of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite with the crafting elements from survival games like Don't Starve. And now, you'll have a chance at seeing how far the title has come since June. Scavengers is running a closed alpha test on PCs through November 12th, and you should see the title in action live both through the company's own Twitch channel (on the 12th from 3PM to 5PM Eastern) as well as from other livestreamers who are part of the test.

The Darwin Project came out of nowhere and snapped up the spotlight at Microsoft's E3 press conference. It's the first game from the 12-person development house Scavengers Studio, and it combines the best aspects of games like Don't Starve and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds in a Hunger Games–style battle arena. Imagine Katniss Everdeen running around Pochinki Hill, chopping down trees like Wilson the Gentleman Scientist.
