New Xbox Live activity figures for the week of January 12th have just made their way online thanks to one Major Nelson and claiming the number one spot is Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War. That zombified weekend must have helped. Halo 3, CoD4, Gears 2 and Left 4 Dead round out the top five. As far as Xbox Live Arcade games go, Castle Crashers sits on top, partly due to the fact that new DLC just released. Full list of Live rankings for retail, XBLA and Community Games is viewable after the jump.

It looks like your weekend plans may now have to be canceled. Call Of Duty: World At War will be awarding double experience from 1pm EST today until Monday morning. Yes, the double EXP has already started, but before you scamper off towards your PS3 you might also like to know that the nazi zombie mode has been unlocked for everyone. You no longer need to have completed the game in order to play this mode. A sneaky twofer from Treyarch which pretty much guarantees that those who have World At War will be playing it throughout the weekend. Enjoy.

Due to popular demand, Treyarch is now opening up Call of Duty: World at War's Nazi zombie co-op playlist to everyone on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, nullifying the previous requirement of completing the single-player campaign. For the uninitiated, Nazi zombie co-op has you and up to four others fighting off endless waves of -- you guessed it -- nazi zombies. And before you ask, no, we never tire of nazis or zombie massacres.Treyarch is also giving out double the experience points this weekend. It started this afternoon at 1:00 PM ET and will stay in effect until an undisclosed time -- probably Monday morning, if we had to guess. If you're in desperate need for some double XP, we suggest you take off work / school now and head to your console of choice.[Via X3F; thanks, mdouet!]

Earning double XP in Call of Duty World at War and getting to play Nazi zombie killing co-op has never been easier to achieve then this weekend thanks to Treyarch's philanthropist ways. From now through weekend's end, all World at War players will earn twice the XP AND have access to the Nazi Zombies co-op playlist. No unlocking required! Nazi zombie killing and double the XP? We must be dreamin'. [Thanks, Rooster286]

Wouldn't you know, Call of Duty: World at War was the number one most played Xbox Live game for the week of January 5th. How ... special? The most played Live games list also informs us that Halo 3 holds the number two spot, Gears of War 2 is firmly planted at the number three spot and CoD4 has slipped to the number four position. Number five, you ask? It's Left 4 Dead.

Just when we'd gotten used to writing a different sort of headline, Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War once again climbs to the top of the UK all-format software sales charts. After being punted (that's another football joke, you see) from the top spot by FIFA 09 last week, the umpteenth shooter set during the second world war now hopes to restart its stint in first position. It previously held the spot for five consecutive weeks. In other chart news, Need For Speed: Undercover moved back up to third position, with Tomb Raider: Underworld clambering from ninth position to sixth. And who managed to leap up ten to ten? Sonic Unleashed. This thing has more plot twists than a Phoenix Wright trial.

Or the United States does, at least. Arguably due to a lack of minigames, GameDaily noted that Call of Duty: World at War sold miserably on the Wii (and DS). The latest NPD numbers saw the Xbox 360 (1.41 million units) and PS3 (597,000) versions in second and sixth place respectively, but the Wii iteration was nowhere to be found -- something you guys also picked up on. In fact, the Wii game lagged embarrassingly far behind its high-definition cousins: according to GameDaily, the PS2, PC, DS and Wii editions sold around 200,000 units combined. This makes us genuinely fear for games like The Conduit. Call of Duty is pretty much the biggest name in the console shooter business, so if that can't shift copies on Wii, what chance a brand-new IP?

Call of Duty: World at War (CoD:W@W for the more efficient among you) has defended its number one position on the all-format UK game sales charts, extending its reign to a fifth consecutive week despite heavy holiday competition. Mario Kart Wii took the second spot, followed by FIFA '09 and, still quite bizarrely, Need for Speed: Undercover. Oh, but wait until we tell you what's in the fifth spot. Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training. Remember that one?Further down the charts, Ubisoft's cel-shaded scurrier, Prince of Persia, climbed to the 20th position while Sonic Unleashed went from 33rd to 12th. We'll let that sink in for a few moments.

And depending on how much you enjoyed Treyarch's first-person war-em-up, you might feel the same way. Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, Call of Duty: World at War executive Daniel Suarez teased the game's upcoming DLC, which is to be formally announced in 2009. Activision hopes to improve on the relatively modest DLC released for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare by creating "potentially two, maybe three packs" before everyone's reeled in by the next CoD. When prodded for specifics about Codwaw dee elsee, Suarez noted, "It's not going to be what we've done traditionally. I'll leave it a little bit mysterious." Ooh! You know what would be radically untraditional? Releasing a few maps for free! We're just saying.

Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War has climbed to the top of the UK all-format game sales charts, blasting its way through countless soldiers, explosive set pieces and Need For Speed: Undercover, which was in second place for some reason. Resistance 2 grabbed the tenth spot in its debut, while Sonic Unleashed, as Eurogamer points out, only managed 23rd ... on the Xbox 360-specific chart. Though FIFA 09's third all-format position makes complete sense and matches our envisioned UK stereotypes perfectly, it's somewhat harder to justify the #39 spot held by Mirror's Edge, not to mention Left 4 Dead's #34. Tomb Raider: Underworld, however, managed to go from a 9 to a 7 in a week. Not the first time that's happened.

OK, so maybe it wasn't developed by Infinity Ward, but that hasn't seemed to dull the praise for Call of Duty: World At War. It's not quite the white-hot, face-melting love heaped upon CoD 4, but it could very well be king of the FPS castle for this holiday season. Yahoo! Games (100/100): "Call of Duty: World at War is clearly one of the top games of this year, and a must have for any action gamer." Team Xbox (92/100): "Call of Duty: World at War was a surprisingly satisfying experience all around. Developer Treyarch really showed that they could be trusted with the keys to Dad's car, and made a game that could be compared favorably to anything Infinity Ward has done." OXM UK (90/100): "Maybe Call of Duty 3's harsh reception has turned out to be a good thing. Treyarch has pushed itself further than ever before and come up with a Call of Duty game that comfortably matches, and sometimes even dares to excel, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare." Giant Bomb (80/100): "Call of Duty: World at War is a perfectly competent game with exciting multiplayer options and a campaign that's worth playing. But in most of the ways that actually count, last year's game was better."

Call of Duty: World at War ships in North America tomorrow, but if you want an early peek (and have the kind of job where you can get away with watching videos at work all day long), here's the first thirty minutes, starting with the Makin Island raid (and continuing after the break).Be warned: as this is a Call of Duty game, and hence Just Like The Real Thing, it's full of naughty words from the beginning, not to mention the odd stomach-churning sight. It looks great, though, and is full of the spectacular set-pieces that we love the series for. With this, The Conduit, and the amazingly-not-terrible Quantam of Solace, shooter fans have a potentially exciting few months ahead.

  • Opinion: Why I can't go beyond the first 5 mins of Call of Duty: World At War

I've been avoiding Call of Duty: World At War. Not because its developer, Treyarch, has yet to inspire me. Not because it's another World War II shooter. I've been avoiding World At War because the featured enemy is the Japanese Empire. Let me explain: While not the first game to portray the Pacific-side of WWII, World At War is the most prominent. One could argue for Medal of Honor's pair of entries, but those came as the franchise was dwindling (not to mention, before and during Joystiq's infancy). World At War follows the overwhelming reception of Call of Duty 4 and benefits from a massive marketing campaign from its publisher, Activision. In short, it's in my face and on my mind.

  • Infinity Ward goes off on Activision for 'bullshit quotes'

Well this was unexpected. Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling, known as fourzerotwo, recently posted some choice words about Activision producer Noah Heller. Specifically, Bowling asks Heller to "stop doing interviews," saying that he needs to stop comparing Call of Duty: World at War to Call of Duty 4 and that the game can "stand on it's [sic] own merits." Bowling then cites a "bullshit quote" from a recent CVG interview in which Heller states that previous Call of Duty titles required several shots with bolt action rifles to make a kill and says that Treyarch has corrected this in World at War. Responded Bowling: "WTF are you talking about?! ... First of all, you didn't work on 'previous Call of Dutys', so don't talk as if you're down with how / why things were designed the way they were. Second, you're completely fucking wrong."Bowling concludes that World at War has many good features and that Activision would be better off promoting them instead of comparing the game to previous titles. He notes that the media should interview someone from Treyarch that "knows what the fuck they're talking about" and not "Senior Super Douche Noah Heller from Activision - who apparently has never played the game and doesn't even work at the developer." Yowch. Soap operas aren't this good.[Via LockoutGaming]
