The all-encompassing brolation that was the Broforce Joystiq Streams on Tuesday did not satisfy our hunger for sweet two-dimensional action. Indeed it only made the crew more ravenous for big cartoon sprites and twitchy gunplay in the grand tradition of Contra and Metal Slug. Feeding the beast within means that we must move onward to new shooter-y, platformer-y delights. Mercenary Kings on PlayStation 4 is our next destination and Tribute Games is coming along for the ride. Joystiq Streams takes to the Mercenary Kings jungle on PS4 at 4PM EST on the Joystiq Twitch channel today. Jean-Francois Major, Tribute Games co-founder and one of the mad minds behind Mercenary Kings, joins Alexander Sliwinski, Anthony John Agnello, and Mike Suszek from the Joystiq posse for some loot stockpiling and CLAW blasting. Joystiq Streams airs every Tuesday and Thursday at 4PM EST. [Images: Tribute Games]

Mercenary Kings developer Tribute Games showed off its new game, Curses 'n Chaos at PAX East this past weekend, but if you weren't lucky enough to see it then, here's what it looks like. Yup, what you see is pretty much the deal. It's an extremely minimalistic 2D action game where players survive wave after wave of baddies, collecting coins and special power-ups to survive whatever monster pops in from the periphery of the screen. Survive the horde mode this fall.

Mercenary Kings, the recently-released retro 2D shooter with surprisingly complex crafting mechanics, is currently available only on the PC and PlayStation 4, though according to Destructoid, we can soon add Sony's Vita handheld to that list. The site spoke with developer Tribute Games at the ongoing PAX East conference, and the team said it was working on a Vita port of Mercenary Kings, as well as ports of Ninja Senki DX and Curses n' Chaos. There's no solid timeframe for any of these handheld releases, but Tribute plans to release the games once the studio has finished development on each. [Image: Tribute Games]

Mercenary Kings developer Tribute Games has teased its next project, Curses 'n Chaos, on the studio's Twitter. The game will launch this fall and is being shown for the first time this week at PAX East. So, what is Curses 'n Chaos? Um, really, we have no clue. Tribute has made its name with Mercenary Kings, which is available on PC and PS4 (free for PS+ members), and Wizorb. We're going to guess it involves some genre in a 16-bit pixel-art style. But that's just a shot in the dark. We'll know more in a few days. [Image: Tribute]

Mercenary Kings has received a rating in Australia and New Zealand, so it should be available shortly in the region for PlayStation 4. The game hit a bit of a hiccup for its PlayStation debut in the region because it was tied up in classification red tape. The rest of the PSN globe should have access to Mercenary Kings now, with Playstation Plus members able to grab it for free. The game has also been available on PC via Steam for some time, working out the kinks through Early Access, but is now in its fully operational form. [Image: Tribute Games]

This week's PlayStation Plus lineup has something in store for both longtime PlayStation 3 fans and PS4 die-hards, offering up Batman: Arkham City and the debuting console version of Mercenary Kings free of charge. Mercenary Kings, developed by Wizorb creator Tribute Games, melds the run-and-gun gameplay of the arcade classic Metal Slug with an online cooperative multiplayer mode and an in-depth item-crafting component. Tomorrow's PlayStation 4 release marks the first time Mercenary Kings is available on a console platform, following up on its Steam Early Access debut last year. Batman: Arkham City, originally released in 2011, finds the Dark Knight trapped in a walled-off section of Gotham City filled with classic villains and other miscreants. The downloadable PlayStation Plus version of Arkham City includes the Catwoman Bundle Pack, which adds a series of exclusive story missions and in-game collectibles. Both games will be available for PlayStation Plus members in North America starting tomorrow. Other PS Plus games premiering in April include Castle of Illusion, Stealth Inc, and Velocity Ultra. PlayStation Plus subscribers get Mercenary Kings as a PS4 freebie when the Kickstarted run-and-gunner scrolls onto PSN next week. Developed by Wizorb and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World studio Tribute Games, Mercenary Kings makes its Metal Slug-style action interesting by chucking in a weapon crafting system based around hundreds of different parts. The rest of April's Plus line-up in North America features Batman: Arkham City, Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark, and the Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse remake on PS3. As for Vita, Velocity Ultra and Pixeljunk Monsters Ultimate HD are next month's dynamic duo. Except for Mercenary Kings, the roster of PS Plus games in Europe is totally different: On PS3 it's Pro Evo Soccer 2014 and on Vita it's MotoGP 13, while Hotline Miami and Sly Cooper Thieves in Time are unlockable on both platforms as Cross-Buy games. That means if you get the PS3 version of Sly on Plus, for example, you'll also get access to it on Vita. Devolver Digital recently revealed Hotline Miami is coming to the PS4 with Cross-Buy enabled, so if you're planning to get the top-down kill-fest on that platform, be sure to grab it as a Plus freebie this month. Indie developer Tribute Games announced that its Metal Slug-inspired run-and-gun shooter Mercenary Kings will launch for the PlayStation 4 on April 1. Mercenary Kings lets up to four players team up for a series of side-scrolling missions in which they'll fend off swarms of enemy troops and scavenge for loot to upgrade their weapons. The game boasts more than 300 equippable gun parts, allowing players to forge weapons that range from deadly short-range pistols to high-caliber machine guns. Mercenary Kings was funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign last year, and is currently available on PC platforms via Steam Early Access. The completed Steam version will launch for Windows and Mac on March 25. [Image: Tribute Games]

Between consoles, PC, mobile and everything in between, there are so many games released today that it's impossible to keep up with everything that's coming out – and it's even harder to keep up with the studios behind them. Even with a gaming public that's grown accustomed to following big developers like Valve and small studios like Double Fine, countless other studios slide under the radar. In the interest of sifting a signal from the noise, the Joystiq crew has selected 20 developers that deserve your attention. These studios are making games you should play, and their future work should be highly anticipated. This list is by no means exhaustive, and we invite you to share your own favorites in the comments!

  • Mercenary Kings holds launch until 2014, Vita remote play is a go

Mercenary Kings is due out on Steam and PS4 in early 2014, despite Tribute Games' attempts to finish it up before the end of the year. Tribute says Mercenary Kings is content complete right now, but the team wants to polish up all that running and gunning before launch, and it's taking a few extra months. The game's previous launch window was "this winter," which technically spills into 2014 anyway – still, Tribute is apologetic. "Again, we'd like to thank you for your patience. We do not take lightly the privilege of having people be excited about the game and asking us about it every day on social media! We're working really hard to get it in the best possible shape and in your hands early 2014." To offer a silver lining of the delay, Tribute reveals that Mercenary Kings will support remote play on Vita at launch. Remember, this is the studio behind Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Wizorb, and those both turned out pretty brilliantly, so we'll give Tribute a few more months to deliver a great game. This time.

Tribute Games, creators of Wizorb and including the team behind the Scott Pilgrim game, will bring Mercenary Kings to PS4 this winter. Mercenary Kings is a run-and-gun platformer in the vein of the Metal Slug series, but features a gun crafting system. The game is currently available as a buy in-alpha product on Steam. "What we're really excited about, though, is the co-op multiplayer in Mercenary Kings," wrote Tribute writer Yannick Belzil in the PlayStation Blog announcement. "And while it's still early for us to talk about it, the connectivity possibilities between PS4 and Vita are quite exciting for further multiplayer mayhem." They certainly are.

  • Mercenary Kings strategy guide could conquer your coffee table

Creative promotional house Off Base Productions wants to self-publish a premium strategy guide for Mercenary Kings, as the first in a series of guides for top-tier independent games. To make this happen, Off Base has teamed up with developer Tribute Games and they have until September 3 to raise $65,000 on Kickstarter. Three days in, the Mercenary Kings Master Codex project has $7,000. Today's market for strategy guides is different than the Nintendo Power days, and Off Base recognizes this. It envisions these guides as high-end, collectible pieces on par with fancy comic book compendiums, inspired by Japanese-style guides and fan-made projects such as the Mother 3 Handbook. Interested parties can snag digital versions of the Mercenary Kings Master Codex by pledging $5, and both digital and physical editions for $20. Throwing down $40 or more gets the limited edition variant cover, limited to 1,000 copies. Thrown into the rewards tiers are art prints, posters, patches, an artbook and more goodies.

Mercenary Kings from Tribute Games is available now through Steam's Early Access program. The game will be regularly priced at $20 when it officially launches, but is currently $15 during this audition period. The co-op shooter is also available in a four-pack for $44.99. What's the difference between Mercenary Kings now and its final, killer state? "It currently has 60 missions whereas the completed version of the game will have over 100," notes Tribute. "This version of the game still needs your feedback to get it in the best possible shape and it's why we are releasing it now!" The game is also planning contracts with (as far as we know) Ouya and PlayStation 4 sometime after PC. Tribute Games was founded by the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World vets that went on to make Wizorb.

Tribute Games' Mercenary Kings will be available for contract work through the Steam Early Access program on July 22. The game's regular price of $20 will meet the business end of a dull knife during the pre-launch, with players receiving an all-access pass to merc contracts for $15. The game is scheduled to launch on Ouya and PlayStation 4 sometime after its PC debut. Tribute Games has quite the playful pedigree at this point, with Wizorb to its credit and the studio being founded by veterans of the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World beat 'em up.

With seven days left, Mercenary Kings has surpassed its $75,000 goal on Kickstarter, meaning that at the very least, a PC version is incoming. In addition, an Ouya version of the crafting-enhanced run-and-gun, with animations by Paul Robertson, is also on the way."Since we'll be needing some extra time to port the game code, the Ouya version will be released at a later date than the PC version," developer Tribute Games noted on the Kickstarter page. If the Ouya supports codes, Tribute will hand out a free Ouya version of the game along with the Steam key to which each over-$15 backer is entitled. Tribute believes codes will be supported, "even though this is not 100 percent confirmed."In case you somehow managed to get to the end of the post after staring at the Metal Wolf animation above, please resume staring at it.

Mercenary Kings is a side-scrolling run-and-gun with weapon crafting elements. Developer Tribute Games (made up of the team from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Wizorb) now requires some help crafting the actual game, for which it's launched a Kickstarter drive. The Kickstarter goal is $75,000, but Tribute is hoping to raise $200,000 or more, at which point it'll be able to include more content, including four-player online co-op, additional missions, weapons, character customizations, and more things to have more of.Rewards include copies of the game (and Tribute's previous game, Wizorb), beta access, t-shirts, hoodies designed by Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, and more extravagant goals like being drawn into the game as a hostage by animator Paul Robertson.
