  • WoW Insider Show, Episode 30: Not completely about patch 2.4

Man, with all the patch 2.4 news flying around today, you might feel a little overwhelmed. Well, worry no more, because just when you need something a little silly and lighthearted, the WoW Insider Show comes right along, with Episode 30 now available on WoW Radio and iTunes. This past Saturday, Turpster and I, along with Amanda Dean and Elizabeth Wachowski of WoW Insider, had a sit down to talk about all of the biggest news in the past week of Warcraft, including, but not limited to: Our favorite trinkets (mine I picked only because the tooltip uses the word "fecundity") What "counts" in terms of leveling as fast as possible Elizabeth talked to us for a bit about the lore of the Burning Crusade, and both the high and low points of it We chatted about the best starting areas in the game (there was a strange split over the Dwarf/Gnome area for some reason as well) And finally we hit on Amanda's Azerothian General Election, which you can still vote on right now -- Thrall is still winning, so Alliance, you better grab your sword and fight the Horde. We did check in reader email, too, and Turpster says he's headed to 70, so we asked for your input on what kind of reward (or punishment) we can give him if he makes it before Wrath -- if you have a suggestion, email us at theshow@wow.com.And speaking of Turpster, you've got to see his new TurpsterVision over at Massively today -- it's a spectacular tale of a galaxy long ago and far away, if you know what I mean.

Every Tuesday think "T" for Turpster and take the "a" in "day", capitalise it, remove the little bit in the middle, turn it upside down and you get a "V". Put the two together and you'll have TV for TurpsterVision -- the best Internet video podcast on Massively! (Never mind that business about it being the only video podcast on Massively...) I really hoped that I haven't peaked as an MMO reviewer, because this week's episode, complete with costumes and musical accompaniment, might be the best TV yet. This week our friendly co-lead blogger, Mike Schramm, punished me by having me review what many regard as an absolutely terrible game. With that said we invite you to join us after the break to see if Turpster can survive against such a title and hopefully answer the question on the lips of players around the world: Can Turpster really sing? I fear the answer to that question is no, but that doesn't stop him from trying!

We jumped on the air yet again this past Saturday for episode 29 of our podcast, and the results of that are now online (and in iTunes) for your listening pleasure. It's a pretty wacky show -- we have both John "Big Bear Butt" Petricelli (also of Shifting Perspectives, our Druid column) and Matthew "He once bumped into Saurfang in Orgimmar, and look who's still writing for WoW Insider" Rossi as well as the indomitable Turpster (who, we're happy to say, took time out of his busy TurpsterVision schedule to come talk with us). I was there too, but mostly only so the guys could make fun of my hunter's pet choices. We also discussed: When patch 2.4 is going to come out (as of this writing, it doesn't look like today) What Risen's deal is and whether we should care. And since we had two tanking guys on, we chatted about tanking, of course, including the backlash from our Hybrid Theory column, and what Matt thinks about prot warriors lately. And we chatted just a little bit about talents we all hate. Lightwell anyone? Definitely give it a listen. And if you've got feedback for us, we want to hear that, too -- drop us a line at theshow@wow.com. Tune in next week as well -- we go live on WoW Radio every Saturday at 3:30pm EST, and hang out in IRC during that time at irc.mmoirc.com in the #wowradio channel. As I said on the show, next week we're going to have a show all about multiboxing, so stay tuned later in the week for more information about that. Enjoy the podcast!

Yes, indeed, after a short trip away from the podcast, I will be back on tomorrow afternoon, live on WoW Radio at 3:30pm EST. Turpster is supposed to be there as well, and both John Petricelli (the Big Bear Butt blogger) and Matthew Rossi (who, I hear, once wrestled a bear and won) will be on the show with us. It'll be a rip-roaring adventure as, I'm sure, we'll chat about all the recent changes in patch 2.4, as well as all the kerfluffle over tanking and protection specs, and why Blizzard is banning a famous Arena hunter. We'll also hit on when patch 2.4 might go live, and of course we'll be reading listener email (which you can send to us at theshow@wow.com).Should be fun, and I don't know about the rest of the guys, but since I'm in Chicago, I'll likely be celebrating St. Patrick's Day, so I'll bring green beer along (for everyone of age, of course). Tune in to WoW Radio tomorrow afternoon at 3:30pm EST to join us for the WoW Insider Show, the best bear-related WoW podcast you'll ever find.

If you like having intellectual discussions about current political events and their impact on the everyday life of the brave men and women serving abroad fighting for our freedom then I am afraid you have come to the wrong place. I don't have a clue about the wars going on here on planet Earth. What I do know about however, is a MMO universe so vast and EPIC that I makes the petty struggles of this world seem insignificant. That is right folks; today we are flying and fighting for our very lives in the turbulent universe of EVE Online!Join us after the break if you think you are truly hardcore enough to play in a universe where you can Alt-Tab while you are meant to be working.

    03.11.2008

The 28th episode of the WoW Insider Show included myself, blogger Amanda Dean, Druid columnist John Patricelli and Turpster in an hour of lively discussion on this week's hot topics. Stories covered included: The debate raged on over when, or even if, is it acceptable to go afk without notice? The latest rollbacks on the PTR for Warlocks and Shaman and why players shouldn't be ready to quit over temporary tests on that server Blizzard so cleverly dubbed the Test server. The effects of the Lifebloom nerf and how Blizzard may have not seen the results they were looking for. Amanda Dean talks about introducing her Mom (hi Amanda's Mom!) to WoW and how she is handling her first few levels in Azeroth Each participant on the show gave their personal opinion on what playable race they would choose if a new one were introduced to the game. If you missed the show, there are plenty of ways for you to listen today including the Flash player on the WoW Radio site, free iTunes download or mp3 file. And you can listen in live every Saturday at 3:30p ET on WoW Radio.[Listen] to this week's show.[iTunes] Subscribe to the podcast in iTunes.[RSS] Get your favorite reader in on the fun.

Put the two together and you'll have TV for TurpsterVision -- the best Internet video podcast on Massively! (Never mind that business about it being the only video podcast on Massively...)It's that time of the week again folks! For some people out there they have been going through withdraw symptoms since my absence on this week's WoW Insider Show. Have no fear, for Super Turpster is here! I have tried to make it up to you guys, even though my schedule is whooping my butt. Thanks to all the folks from last week who voted Bard, you all win a "Turpster-Patented-Internet-High-Five".I find it very tough in this job to ever be fair to an MMO; I only get a week to play it and produce the review. It's always tough to get a sense of how fantastic it is past the starting zone. That in mind, I do urge all of you out there to try every MMO you can get your hands on. There is so much more out there than just World of Warcraft (Blasphemy I hear you scream!) Then again on Massively I feel like I am preaching to the choir!Enjoy the show this week; it was a close shave getting it up in time...in more ways than one! (Join us after the break to find out if Turpster is really allowed to make such horrid innuendo.)

Turpster wasn't actually around for this episode of our podcast, but just in case you really enjoy his tunes (that we usually play during music breaks on the live show), both of his albums are now available for download in the WoW Insider Show forums. Enjoy. And the latest episode of the WoW Insider Show is also up for your listening pleasure right now on WoW Radio -- in this, Episode 27, Duncor, Daniel Whitcomb, and John "BigBearButt" Petricelli and I sat down and talked about the biggest issues in the last week in Warcraft: We hit up reader email as usual, including whether the game is more "carebear" than it used to be, whether Blizzard should update pre-60 quests, and exactly how you can impress your guild's officers and class leads We chatted about the Warlock's Lifetap nerf and what it means for the rest of the game Does it matter to us exactly what classes the CMs or the devs play? And we had a small bit of commentary about the results of our patch 2.4 guess contest Plus much, much more. Make sure to give it a listen -- you can use any of the links below to jump right in and hear our podcast. And don't forget, we do this every Saturday, so next weekend at 3:30pm EST, you can tune in to WoW Radio and hear us do this live. Yes, today is Leap Day -- we only have this twenty four hour period once every four years, so make good use of it while you've got it. And what are you going to be doing with this day that the calendars have blessedly granted you use of? Why, playing MMOs of course. This weekend, Massively's Kyle Horner tells me he's headed into Lord of the Rings Online ("to get my Hunter to level 17"), and he'll probably be rolling in Lost Odyssey on the Xbox 360 as well (not an MMO, but apparently a pretty good RPG). And the great Turpster (he of TurpsterVision fame) will probably also but some LotRO time in, as well as playing another game for the next episode of TV. We can't tell you what it is, so you'll just have to find out when the new episode drops next Tuesday. What are you playing in the world of MMOs this weekend?Previously on WRUP...

  • Learn how to get imba with Be Imba!

    02.28.2008

Our good friend (and co-worker) BigBearButt posted this the other day, but it never made it to us (and it's probably because it doesn't seem to be working for US players quite yet). Be Imba! is an awesome little site that purports to do what Dan's new column also does, which is make one character as good as it can be.As I said, US players aren't really working at this point, and the site blames the Armory's instability (one more reason for Blizzard to start breaking out the stats). But I looked up an EU player I know (as you can see above), and the app is pretty cool -- it'll tell you where you're missing sockets, where your gear could be better, what your talents are "meant for," and where to run instances so you can get better gear. Pretty neat. Now, a disclaimer: you should always spec and gear how you like, not how some online application tells you to. But everyone should be interested in making their character better, and a setup like this could be very helpful in figuring out how to get where you want to be going. Hopefully the site's creator (early apologies for sending traffic to the site, but it'll die down after a while) will figure out how to work with the Armory, or Blizzard will get it into their heads that opening up Armory info in XML or other open formats will make this easier for everyone.[Via AA in its slick new location]

Hello and thanks for joining me again for another fun filled feature here on Massively! I love my job, it totally rocks, I get to have all sorts of fun and hopefully you guys enjoy it a little bit too. I normally am happy with you guys turning up and leaving the odd comment or two below though this week I have to ask you for a favor. On Saturday, just after the WoW Insider Show, I was chatting to everyone's favorite Shaman Crybaby Crusader who was just heading off to a D&D game. I then posed the question to him, "which was the most awesome and manly of DnD characters." Obviously I chose the correct answer and Mike chose the wrong one. Let me know which way you swing in your comments: Bard or Wizard? Who wins? You decide!(Oh and there is a video or something like that after the break!)

    02.26.2008

This past Saturday the WoW Insider Show welcomed Amanda Dean and Adam Holisky on, as well as myself and Turpster, for the 26th episode of our podcast on WoW Radio. Despite some lackluster, if I may say so, email from readers (you can send us some better emails at theshow@wow.com), we charged through and got a lot of good discussion done: We chatted about Amanda's hacked characters, and what a little name-dropping will get you from Blizzard (not much) We confronted whether all this new badge loot makes raiding worthless (surprise -- we decided it does not) We talked about all the new class changes on the PTR, with a special look at Shamans, and the Warlock change to Lifetap. We ran over what Rob Pardo said during the GDC Liveblog And finally, we wondered just what kind of player it takes to PuG with Adam All in all, good show, and you can listen to it right now over on WoW Radio's website. You can also subscribe to our podcast in iTunes if you so choose, and we'll be back at it again next weekend -- every Saturday at 3:30pm EST. Enjoy the show!

We reached our 25th episode of the podcast this last Saturday, and it's all up right now for you to listen to over on WoW Radio's site. Turpster (who, I hear, has posted something on Massively today), Matthew Rossi, and I all sat down to talk about all the biggest stories in World of Warcraft over the past week, including, but not limited to: That wily companion cube (I promise, this is the last time we'll mention it) The lunacy on the PTR: not only the pilgrimage of level ones, but also the chaos caused by a tameable Brutallus Whether more dailies are good or bad How M'uru went missing And we answered a bunch of reader mail, including who our pick to direct the upcoming WoW movie would be, now that the writer's strike is settled. I'll give you a hint: it's not Uwe Boll. Listen in to the podcast every Saturday afternoon starting at 3:30pm EST on WoW Radio, and hear intelligent er, interesting, um, audible commentary like this every single week! And in the meantime, if you have something want to share with us, feel free to drop an email to theshow@wow.com, and you may hear us talk about it on the next show.Enjoy this week's podcast, and we'll see you next week.

We almost can't believe it's true, but it is. If you're a fan of the WoW Insider Show (and our representative from WoW Radio, Turpster), you won't want to miss Massively's new weekly feature, TurpsterVision. Every Tuesday, the loveable rogue (who actually plays a Gnome Warrior in WoW) will premiere a brand new video segment, full of Turpstery goodness. Massively, if you didn't know, is a blog like WoW Insider, but for all MMOs (not just Warcraft), and each week Turpster will examine another wacky game in the quickly-growing world of online gaming. And it's probably a good guess that he'll also do whatever else he thinks of, too-- his is a kind of rampant talent that you just can't control. This week, he examines The Endless Forest, an MMO that we don't recommend playing unless you really, really like deer and dancing in wooded graveyards. Yeah-- just watch the video over on Massively, and you'll see what we mean. We welcome Turpster to the Joystiq family (he's like the drunken, obscene cousin, but we totally mean that in a good way), and we're sure that the new TurpsterVision will be a must-watch every single Tuesday.

    02.11.2008

It was a madhouse this week on the podcast-- not only did we have Marcie Knox and Turpster on with me, but we also had our first guests ever, Johnny and Rob from Unforgotten Realms. Things were crazy, but we did get to talk about: Patch 2.4, and our predictions for when it will hit the live realms The most exciting parts of the patch notes (can you believe what they did to Old Blanchy's feed pouch?) Johnny and Rob were able to set the record straight on their roleplaying guild on Sentinels (and I stand corrected-- they are absolutely not "anti-RP") And if you are a raider, you'll love this week's show-- both Rob and Marcie let loose on exactly what they think about the high-end game With five people on, we had some technical issues early on-- we had a crash, but Duncor was able to clear it up pretty well, so you may not even notice if you're listening (the show is available right now over on WoW Radio and in iTunes). But it was a great time-- Johnny and Rob are very funny. And if you like them here, go listen to their Legendary Heroes podcast as well. But don't go too far-- the WoW Insider Show will be back next week as usual-- we're live on WoW Radio every Saturday at 3:30pm EST. Enjoy the show.

Episode 21 of our official podcast is now online and ready for your ears to take it all in. We finally lay to rest one of the biggest debates on the show-- yes, we finally pick an Alliance cry (and you can probably guess what it is). Also, we answers lots of viewer email, and: Talked about David's great post about the AV imbalance And the ghost wolf debacle Chatted about the unwritten rules of raiding and where they come from And we had two good conversations about overhealing and the coming gear reset in the next expansion And we also declared war against Fandral Staghelm in Darnassus-- if you kill the guy (and you should), be sure to post your killshot over in the WoW Insider Show forums. When we get a bunch of them together, we'll roll them all up into a gallery on the site here.If you've got feedback on the show, feel free to drop us an email at theshow@wow.com. And don't forget that we do this every week-- we'll be back on the air this coming Saturday afternoon at 3:30pm EST. Mark your calendars and enjoy the show!

Episode 21 of the WoW Insider show is live tomorrow afternoon over on WoW Radio, starting right up at 3:30pm EST. And last week's episode was so much fun that we've got the exact same group back together-- John P, Turpster and I will cover everything that's happened in the last week of WoW, including AV imbalances, the QQing over the Ghost Wolves (and why Blizzard was wrong), hitting the gold limit, and when to (and when not to) overheal during raids.Plus, we'll answer your emails and questions (theshow@wow.com is the address, and we'll be in IRC as usual), and undoubtedly Turpster will have something funny and/or inappropriate to say. Definitely will be a good time-- if you're around tomorrow afternoon at 3:30pm, log into WoW Radio and give us a listen. See you then.

    01.14.2008

The 20th episode of our podcast is now live for your listening pleasure over on WoW Radio's site. On Saturday afternoon, Turpster, John Patricelli (our Druid blogger) and I sat down and talked about the last week in WoW. We hit on: A little listener email, including more Alliance slogans, and we helped a listener compare the different DPS caster classes. We talked a little bit with John about his other blog, Big Bear Butt, and how he started blogging for us here Playing the game in weird ways, including my idea to play a mute character If last week's AV changes will finally fix things Drama in a column about drama World PvP and how Blizzard could reward it And we just generally got a little silly in the second half-- Turpster recorded a funny gnome voice, and we all made our predictions for the year that's coming. Definitely give it a listen, as I think this is one of the best podcasts we've done yet. If you've got feedback of your own (or Fandral Staghelm downing pictures, because I hate that guy), send it along to theshow@wow.com.And don't forget that we do this every week. If you couldn't tune in to listen last Saturday, mark your calendars for this coming Saturday at 3:30pm EST to show up at WoW Radio and check the show out.
