  • Joystiq hands-on: Uncharted 2 co-op multiplayer

Click to enlarge Thanks to games like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Gears of War, online co-op gameplay has become an almost obligatory bullet point for modern action games. Naughty Dog has chosen to respond to the trend in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves in a way that's slightly different than usual. Rather than shoehorn a second player into an experience already crafted for solo adventure, it's creating a separate side mission designed specifically with two to three players in mind.Three-player co-op? Yeah, we were surprised, too. Having tried it with two other honest-to-goodness live humans, we can report that it not only works, but -- so far -- works very well. The combination of smart A.I. opponents, platforming elements and teamwork-based objectives seems a perfect fit for Uncharted 2. Ah yes, teamwork. It's something we quickly found you need to have nailed down -- preferably with two friends -- lest you wish to spend an afternoon yelling at the person who won't stop shooting to give you a leg up.%Gallery-51151%

  • inFamous pre-order box reveals Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta

Looks as though Sony's "electrifying announcement" may have been leaked a bit early. A Best Buy pre-order box features this promo for an Uncharted 2 "Multiplayer Beta Voucher," as revealed by Kotaku. From what we can garner from the box, purchasing inFamous will give players an early preview of Uncharted 2's online mode. This would be a rather smart move on Sony's part, leveraging one of its biggest franchises to promote a new IP.Oh, and multiplayer in Uncharted 2??? That sounds pretty rad, too. Guess we'll find out all the details when embargoes end on Monday.[Thanks, tmacairjordan87!]

  • Sony teases 'electrifying' inFamous, Uncharted 2 news

Sony has released a most unusual teaser clip (above) via its YouTube PlayStation channel, which indicates some sort of announcement regarding two PS3-exclusives, inFamous and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, will be made on Monday, April 27. The publisher recently held preview events for both titles, the coverage embargoes on which just so happen to lift on -- you guessed it -- April 27. We know what's going on with Nate Drake's new adventure -- and seriously can't wait to tell you on Monday -- but we didn't attend Sucker Punch's open house event. Sony did promise the latter would give a sneak peek at new inFamous content, though. Scrutinizing today's video, we see Cole McGrath, the hero/anti-hero of inFamous crackle with electricity, followed by a promotional shot of Uncharted 2 in which an electrical transformer explodes. Our best, total guesses: either Cole will somehow be a playable character in Uncharted 2 (his powers do "reach into" the game during the video) or inFamous will include a playable demo of Naughty Dog's latest. Either would be "electrifying" announcements in our book. Which one would you like to happen most?

  • Uncharted 2 looks deadly, gorgeous in new concept art

Concept art for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has surfaced online and it's looking absolutely gorgeous. The images show some very ambitious action sequences and intense environments (such as a gun battle on a moving train, and deadly drop zones like the gutted train car hanging over a cliff pictured above). Of course, concept art can only show the intent of designers and not the final content found in the game. Though, those lucky enough to have seen the leaked GDC gameplay footage might attest that the transition from concept to game is working out just fine. IGN has a few more concept paintings to check out, including an area that looks like it could be Shangri-La.

For fans of a franchise, collector's editions are always welcome. They're usually jam packed full of goodies and extras which are well worth a bit of extra money. Naughty Dog is thinking about setting one up for Uncharted 2 when it launches this autumn, but it doesn't know what it'd put in it. That's where you come in.A collector's edition hasn't yet been confirmed -- Naughty Dog is just testing the water to see if it would be viable. If you have a good idea for an Uncharted 2 collector's edition -- should one be made -- then leave a comment on this post, in case a Naughty Dog representative should come snooping round. Alternatively, feel free to twitter your idea and include the hashtag "#u2ce" in your tweet. As for us, we'd love to see a boatload of behind the scenes content, an artbook, copy of the game script, a "How-to: The Perfect Half-Tuck" guide and a working replica of whatever magical treasures are found in the game. Nothing too extreme.

  • GDC09: Leaked Uncharted 2 gameplay shows urban gunplay, acrobatics

You might want to stop reading this now, and check out the video posted after the break. You see, when dealing with leaked gameplay footage posted on content-removal-friendly YouTube, time is seriously of the essence -- particularly when that footage was shamelessly yoinked (no, not by us) from a closed-doors GDC panel showing off the highly anticipated Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. In case it gets pulled before you can lay eyes upon it, here's a brief recap: The footage shows the familiar gunplay and monkey-esque environment navigation from the original, though this particular clip eschews the jungles and tombs of Uncharted the First in favor of a war-torn urban locale. The series' sleek animations are even sleeker, and the gunshootery looks a bit more responsive. Also, Nate's apparently developed the ability to survive point-blank explosions. We can't wait to see how this invulnerability factors in to the game's story.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

  • Sony: God of War III, MAG coming within the year

    02.20.2009

A triumphant Sony press release which heralded next week's arrival of Killzone 2 and, effectively, the kick-off for its 2009 line-up, contained a tentative list of the games that will likely cause PS3 owners to foam at the mouth with anticipation over the coming months. The list contained two mammoths in particular -- according to Sony, both God of War III and Zipper Interactive's MAG: Massive Action Game will be among the "blockbuster exclusives" which will land on the console "throughout the year." The imminent launch window for the two titles (which were mentioned alongside inFamous, Heavy Rain, MLB 09: The Show and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves) is just a bit surprising -- though we suppose Sony's selective wording ("throughout the year") could mean that the listed titles will be dropping by this time in 2010. Still, barring any delays, 2009's shaping up to be a heck of a year for the enthusiastic supporters of Sony's monolithic home console.

We ventured out to Naughty Dog studios yesterday to check out the eagerly anticipated sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. The bad news? We didn't get to play it. We instead watched Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells take Nathan Drake through the paces. Nothing makes your palm itch more than watching someone else play a game you're dying to get your hands on.The good news? It looks, perhaps unsurprisingly, very promising. With new abilities for Drake, better usage of the PlayStation 3 hardware and a curvy new love interest, Naughty Dog appears set to deliver a great sequel to 2007's critically acclaimed jungle romp. click to enlarge Nathan Drake, Nathan Drake, does whatever ... a Nathan Drake ... can? Well, in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves -- we wonder if Sly Cooper's among them? -- Drake can clearly cling to new types of cover and sneak up on thieve-ier thieves, grab their shields, and basically do a whole heck of a lot more than he could in the first game. Which is good, right? It sure looks good in these direct-feed shots from developer Naughty Dog, which are both pretty and high in "res." %Gallery-43006%[Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • Uncharted 2 enemies have improved since you last met

    by

    01.14.2009

Looks like Nathan's enemies will be enjoying an expanded skillset in Uncharted 2. CVG has been nattering with Bruce Straley, one of the game's directors, who has revealed that the baddies in Uncharted 2 will feature improved intelligence. Specifically, they will now "hunt" and "investigate" based on movement in their peripheral vision. "When Drake enters this peripheral vision the enemies will look over in the direction they think they saw him in and depending on how long he was in this vision cone, they may just look or they may walk over and check out what they think they saw.""If they lose eye contact with Drake for a few seconds, one or more enemies will start hunting around the area, starting with his last known location, and then spread their search out if he's not found." This hunting behaviour means that the enemies will need to be able to follow Drake wherever he goes, which means jumping and climbing around the environment. "The benefit to this was our combat wasn't limited to flat terrain anymore."Sounds great to us. One of our biggest gripes with Uncharted 1 was that at any given point you were either fighting or platforming. Hopefully we'll see more of a crossover in the sequel. Apparently more details will be forthcoming once CVG posts the full interview with Straley tomorrow.

Nathan Drake's disheveled mug has decided to grace yet another magazine cover, this time the latest issue of Edge. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the cover story, and to be honest, there isn't much here that we didn't already hear about from Game Informer or see from the leaked photos. Still, have at a few new pull quotes: According to Naughty Dog's Bruce Straley, the sneaking mechanic is "something more in the toolbox" that won't be required. "It's not Splinter Cell," he said. "It's choosing when and from where to enter combat."Adding to the previously reported claim of "maxing out" the PlayStation 3's capabilities, the devs tease that the technology is strong enough to "allow an entire building to collapse while you're in it - and we can throw enemies in at the same time while that's happening." That better be in the final game a few times. This issue of Edge should be on newsstands now.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • Uncharted 2 details revealed in latest EDGE

Those lucky so-and-sos at EDGE have had some eyes-on time with upcoming half-tuck-em-up Uncharted 2. The preview in the latest issue reveals a lot of backstory as well as quelling our fears about the potential of those stealth sections. Fans of Nathan Drake will be happy to hear that Uncharted 2 will delve further into his character, showing that while he's "affable and charming, he can also be a jerk." No longer is Nathan on a quest for Francis Drake, instead he's turned his sights to Marco Polo, whose journey back to Europe from the court of Kublai Khan saw his 600-man fleet dwindle to just a dozen survivors. Ultimately Drake's journey will lead him to Tibet and an ancient city, which is said to house a gem that can grant wishes. The story in this game will allow for plenty of variety in the environments you'll be visiting. Naughty Dog also clarifies what they mean by a "stealth mechanic," which put many people on edge when the game was announced. There is no intention of turning Uncharted into the next Splinter Cell; "stealth just gives you something more in the toolbox - another element, another choice that's available to you. Stealth or shooting - both choices are valid at any time." There's plenty more interesting stuff to read in the full article. It's certainly done a good job getting us even more excited about what's to come from Naughty Dog next year.

Somewhere in Holland, a dike holding back a slew of new Uncharted 2: Among Thieves screenshots and concept art just broke wide open. Full-resolution screens from an area in the game not seen in either of the two videos released thus far have appeared on Dutch gaming site XGN, and are quickly saturating the rest of the 'net.Naughty Dog has confirmed via the NeoGAF forums that these are, in fact, in-game shots. They show protagonist Nathan Drake shooting, sneaking up on, and grabbing a riot shield from new, decidely non-piratey enemies. There's also been a breach of a reservoir carrying concept and character art, one piece in particular showing Drake's new sidekick, Chloe. All told: head explode?[Via PS3 Fanboy]

We know exactly how you're feeling. You saw the Uncharted 2 trailer (probably multiple times) and it just left you wanting more. NeoGaf user "jiggle" has posted a whole bunch of screenshots and concept images from Nathan Drake's second outing. They show a new urban environment, with decidedly non-piratey armed guards (though, in true Uncharted fashion, they do all look the same). There's also some snowy concept art, what appears to be a new female sidekick (we're still rooting for Elena to make a return) and an ancient city in the mountains (shown above) that we can't wait to explore. We're not sure what the source of these images is, but we'll be sure to update you should we learn of their origin. Regardless, take a peek and get yourself even more hyped up for what is quickly becoming our most anticipated game for 2009.[Thanks Noshino and Monik]

So you missed the Spike VGAs. You didn't miss much. Only the first footage of Uncharted 2, God of War III, Brutal Legend, Watchmen and Dante's Inferno (from the team behind Dead Space, don'tcha know). We've got your back, though. After the break you can watch all of the trailers from the show without having to sit through any of that boring "awards" stuff (GTA IV for GOTY? Really?) We're having trouble deciding which of these trailers is our favorite. Realistically it's probably Uncharted 2, because we love us some Nathan Drake. Then again, we have demon nuns, Kratos wielding massive gloves, Rorschach beating up bad guys and another interesting looking new IP from the Dead Space team. What's there not to like? 2009's looking great.

After watching the breath-taking teaser trailer that was supposedly rendered in real-time, we couldn't wait to find more about Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Well, our wish is Game Informer's command -- their cover story for January features adventurer Nathan Drake's second outing and various sources on the interwebz have already gathered all the little juicy bits.MaDogNik96 of GameFAQs reports that Drake will be looking for the "lost" ships of Marco Polo and will joined by one Chloe Frazer, who is voiced by Claudia Black of Stargate SG-1 fame. Speaking of voice actors, Nolan North will reprise his role as the main protagonist (editor's note: yay!). New improvements and mechanics, some of which were already reported, include free climbing, stealth gameplay, "more dynamic" melee combat, elimination of SIXAXIS controls, access to your weaponry during any stance, improved graphics, retooled QTE sequences that give the player more control and more. The game will also reportedly use "nearly 100%" of the PS3's power (Drake's Fortune has been quoted as using 30%), but that sounds a stat that will remain true only until Uncharted 3 is unveiled. • Uncharted 2 preview (of the preview)

    by
    James Ransom-Wiley

    12.11.2008

Uncharted 2 is the Game Informer cover story of the month -- and the internet info dump of the day! A condensed version of the preview (credit "MaDogNik96") has been making the rounds across forums telling the story of Nathan Drake's latest adventure to thieve the lost ships of Marco Polo. Well, not the whole story. Not even close. What we can glean from the secondhand knowledge is a new love interest-slash-sidekick: Chloe Frazer, voiced by Claudia Black (Stargate SG-1) and fond of rocket launchers. And fresh off his stint as the new Prince of Persia, Nolan North returns as the voice of Drake, who's learned a thing or two since the first game. As previously revealed, Naughty Dog is creating new free climbing and stealth gameplay, but we'll also see improved combat; "more dynamic" fights, ditched SixAxis controls, and abilities to move while aiming behind cover and gunning from any stance, reports MaDog. QTEs (think: Drake's Fortune's final boss) will apparently be reworked to give more control to the player, and, in general, characters will interact better with the environments. On the tech side, there are some ambiguous numbers being thrown around: Did you know Drake's Fortune only used 30 percent of PS3's power? Uncharted 2 promises to tap "nearly 100 percent." No way! Our guess: it's gonna look better and load faster (in fact, there won't be any load screens once you start playing, reportedly). What else? Uh ... a score by Greg Edmonson and an icy train level ... (clearly, we've exhausted this news already).
