Despite the fact that the esteemed Mr. Mossberg doesn't seem to care for it too much, Les Delliens has it on good authority that Dell will be upgrading its line of Vostro small business systems this month, in the form of the 1200 laptop. Specs are not yet available to accompany the above pic, but we can assume from the model number that this will likely be an upgrade to the Vostro 1000, a low-end, AMD-powered 12.1-incher. In other Dell news -- well, other other news, really -- the same Les Delliens forum member has confirmed specs and images of the upcoming Inspiron 1525 / 1526 (pictured after the break), a 15.4-inch notebook rocking any number of CPU options from AMD or Intel and said to launching in Europe on December 14th -- four days before the rumored Vostro announcement.[Via Notebook Italia]Read - Vostro 1200Read - Inspiron 1525 / 1526

Tired of waiting for Black Friday? Just plain terrified of getting mauled? If you happen to fit into either of the aforementioned categories, take heart, as Dell's got you covered. The firm's 15.4-inch Vostro 1000 -- which was listed earlier this year for as low as $449 -- has now dipped $50 lower to crack the oh-so-crucial $400 barrier. The all-black lappie features a 1.7GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-53 processor, Windows XP Home Edition, an XGA panel, 120GB 5,400 RPM hard drive, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a DVD writer (with dual-layer DVD+R write capability), ATI's Radeon Xpress 1150 integrated graphics set, 802.11g WiFi and a four-cell Li-ion battery to boot. Nah, this budget machine won't satisfactorily churn through any advanced audio / video editing, but we'd bet it can handle Doom just fine.

  • Mossberg harshes on Dell's new Vostro lineup

That's right Walt, kick 'em while they're down. The godfather of tech-soul has given Dell's new Vostro lineup of PCs and services for small (25 employees and less) businesses a thorough drubbing this morning. How bad was it? Well, he found the entire Vostro initiative to be, "nothing special, nothing particularly tailored for small business at all." While the lack of craplets (pre-loaded trial software) was a nicety, the fact that they ship the XP units without any "security software" but with the notoriously insecure IE6 browser (not 7 or even Firefox) was simply inexcusable for machines sold to businesses without IT departments. He even dubs the affordable yet "bulky, plain" Vostro 1500 a "branding-and-marketing ploy." Ouch. See the man throw down the criticism after the break.

Those Vostro PCs we first heard about last month just got pushed out the door by Dell. The laptops consist of the 14.1-inch Vostro 1400, 15.4-inch Vostro 1500, and 17-inch Vostro 1700 while the desktops include the Vostro 200 Slim Tower and Vostro 200 Mini Tower. There's even a low-end, AMD-based 15.4-inch Vostro 1000 laptop starting at just $449. The laptops mirror their Inspiron brethren configurations only with a small-business mindset: all-black (only) slabs, zero pre-installed bloatware, a 30-day guarantee without restocking fee, choice of XP or Vista Business, and services designed for small businesses. Same goes for the Vostro desktops which start at just $319. All available now.

  • Dell reportedly set to release new Inspiron, Vostro laptops

As they are wont to do, the folks at Notebook Italia have turned up some details on a fresh new batch of laptops, including a bundle of new Inspirons from Dell and a pair of new models in the company's hereto unheard of "Vostro" line. The new entries in the Inspiron line include the 1520, 1521, 1720, and 1721, each of which pack either 15.4-inch or 17-inch displays, and boast either Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Turion 64 X2 processors. The Vostro models on the other hand, appear to be Intel-only (at least from what's been revealed so far), with the Vostro 1500 coming equipped with a 15.4-inch display and the Vostro 1700 upping things to a 17-inch screen. Unfortunately, those are about all the specs that are known at the moment, although it doesn't look like we'll have to wait long to find out more, as all but one of the laptops are reportedly set to be released on June 26th, with the Vostro 1700 following later in July.Update: The laptop above is a new Inspiron, not a Vostro. Those, apparently, are all black.
