It's no surprise that the majority of our days are spent staring at the quiet glow of a computer screen, so why not decorate it with an image we'd like to have burned into our minds. The team at Bits Bytes Pixels & Sprites agree and have posted this Portal wallpaper to fancy-up our monitors. Not only is the wallpaper topical but it's informative, reminding us of the perils of water, falling objects and, of course, that we could be steps away from delicious cake. The full 1680X1050 wallpaper is available at the BBPS so we urge you to pick it up, we hear they might have cake to give!

  • Andrige's Tree of Life wallpaper (and others)

Just had to share this amazing "Tree of Life" wallpaper with you all, as seen on Resto4Life. It was commissioned by them, and done by Andrige, an artist who's created quite a few terrific WoW-related images. But man this is a great piece of work from start to finish, with a little Night Elf treeform backed up by the big Ancients in the background, all covered with that great purple Darnassian glow.Very cool stuff, and very apt to grace the desktop of any Resto druids out there (or the people who appreciate them -- raises hand). My only complaint is that it's all druid centric -- where are my epic Shaman wallpapers?

  • New Fury of the Sunwell preview page at the main US site

2.4's not out today, but Blizzard threw a nice little consolation prize our way: A new Fury of the Sunwell preview page, complete with a trailer and a very spiffy looking wallpaper featuring Kil'jaedan rising out of the Sunwell while Kael'thas looks on, as well as an in-game cinematic trailer in which Kael'thas tells the story of the destruction of the Sunwell and speaks of his plans to reignite it and summon Kil'jaedan. if you're a bit unclear on the Sunwell Lore, this page explains it succinctly as well. There's also a list of some of the new features, such as all the new daily quests, accompanied by screenshots. In what might be considered a bit of tease for WotLK, the screenshot for the Arena Tournament features a Warrior wielding the fabled Ashbringer (the corrupted version, but still!). It's also worth noting that we can add another Kralnor cookie to the growing list of them, the screenshot also features everyone's favorite staff-using Warlock. Blizzard's done a great job with this page, although I have to wonder if this is a harbinger of more PTR time. It seems strange they'd only release such a well done preview page a few scant days before the patch goes live, but we shall see. It's fun to have some new eye candy to keep us occupied until the patch drops.

Despite the endless praise Shiren the Wanderer's fans have for the new DS remake, you need only look to the nearest gaming forum to find examples of curious gamers immediately turned off by Shiren's US/EU boxart. Of all the marvelous concept art Sega of America had at its disposal, this is what the publisher decided on?In a post at Jeremy Parish's (of 1UP fame) blog holding roguelikes up as "the quintessential desert-island-game genre," commenter Emilio shared a link to wallpapers fashioned from that official artwork, and, as you can see in the cropped shot above, they are divine. You can grab 1024x768 and 1280x1024 versions by loading up the official Japanese site and selecting the fourth option in the top-right menu scroll. Or you can just page through the wallpapers in our gallery! Make sure to view them in "Hi Res" for maximum effect.%Gallery-11488%See also: 2008's Biggest Blips: Shiren the Wanderer[Via Toastyfrog]

Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.We had so much fun presenting fan-made commercials these past two weeks, we decided to create our own ad, repurposing an old page ripped from a 1970s comic book, its pages yellowed with age. Strap up your boots, grab your rifle, and report past the post break for this week's edition of Promotional Consideration!

While trolling the 4chan image boards the team at Bits Bytes Pixels Sprites stumbled upon this a gorgeous wallpaper depicting the Big Daddy and Little Sister having, as our own Dustin would say, "good times."Ripped from the narrative of the award-winning BioShock, the Big Daddy and Little Sister are central characters in the great underwater city of Rapture and have inspired everything from fan art to developer discussions on the importance of simple stories in games. This beautiful piece deserves to be added to your desktop, so would you kindly download it.

  • Philips patent app reveals plans for wired wallpaper

We've already seen cellphone (and WiFi) blocking wallpaper and solar powered wallpaper, to name a few, but it looks like the folks at Philips have some ideas of their own for your walls, with a recent patent application of theirs revealing plans for some "wired wallpaper." As New Scientist reports, that would basically consist of wallpaper with a series of conducting strips running through it, which could be used to power any device with the necessary conducting pins simply by sticking it to the wall. Of course, most of us only have so many walls, so lets just hope someone comes up with a solar-powered, device-powering, signal-blocking wallpaper before we're forced to make such a difficult choice.[Via New Scientist]

Even if you don't play the official Trading Card Game, the latest wallpaper released is certainly worth a download. While you're there grabbing your new desktop background, you might as well peruse some of the newest fan artwork. My personal pick is the brooding dwarf, submitted by http://fdiskart.deviantart.com. Whether you focus on the beauty and architecture, or are taking real-time combat shots, Blizzard wants your submissions. Not feeling confident in your photographic talents? Check out our mini-guide to getting the perfect snapshot.Do you like to use World of Warcraft desktop wallpapers? • Samwise's holiday wallpaper available now

As usual, Blizzard artist Samwise has presented us with a holiday-themed wallpaper, and here it is on Blizzard's site (you can use the links at the bottom to choose different sizes obviously). Just like the art in years past, the pic tends a little more cutesy than most Warcraft-themed creations, but hey, it's the holidays-- drink some cocoa and melt that frozen, war-torn heart of yours. And this also tells us what we originally suspected about the Blood Elves joining the Horde-- not only did players enjoy playing a "good-looking race," but it looks like the little Horde ladies did as well.

We're approaching the end of December, and if you downloaded the Lord of the Rings Online calender wallpapers last quarter, then you may be worried about what you're going to do when the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, rendering your wallpaper obsolete. Thankfully, Turbine has come through for you once again, releasing 3 brand new wallpapers with overlaid calender for you to start the year off on the right foot. As with last time, the old wallpapers can now be downloaded sans calender, so that you can continue to enjoy the imagery without looking like a behind-the-times slacker. We have added the new wallpapers to our LotRO wallpapers gallery, and you can download all wallpapers past and present in ultra-high quality at the official wallpaper page.%Gallery-8208%

  • Age of Conan artwork for your drooling pleasure

    by
    Akela Talamasca

    12.14.2007

To follow our earlier post about the Age of Conan press event, here is a Gallery full of artwork given to us by the AoC artists themselves. We're talking screenshots, renders, and concept art, all of which look outstanding. It's clear that one of the mandates for the art direction was to go for a core of realism in all things, from building design to creature physiognomy. Certainly the fantastical elements are in force, but they're tempered by a solid aesthetic that really appeals to those who aren't into the cartoony, oversaturated palette of World of Warcraft and the like. And, in fact, I'd be willing to bet that the artists took some inspiration directly from the pulp novels themselves. There's an almost indefinable quality here that hearkens back to those great old covers. This is a well-executed strategy that will keep players fully immersed in the world, and it's all absolutely gorgeous. Without further ado, have at it!%Gallery-11743%

Due to unforeseen circumstances brought about by that dreaded time waster between WoW sessions we call Real Life[TM], it unfortunately comes to pass that this week's /silly will not be ready for your Tuesday morning perusal. Fear not, good friends! Not only will I have a dumbfoundingly witty (or unwittingly dumb, depending on your point of view) comic for you come Thursday A.M., but I also have gifts today to tide you over until then. Below, you will find links to a wallpaper based on the art from the third installment of /silly, featuring the ever-lovable Shadowsilk in both hand drawn and in-game model forms. For a refresher on who she is and why you would want to have a wallpaper of her, feel free to click the image above and reread the original comic. To skip straight to snagging the wallpaper, select your screen resolution from the links below. 1024 x 7681280 x 10241680 x 1050 I now return you to your regularly scheduled WoW Insider, already in progress. Arthur E. "Arturis" Orneck apologizes for any inconvenience his murderous rampage may have caused, and reminds you that squirrels can be deadly when cornered.

  • It begins: Dell and Blizzard teaser page is up

Dell and Blizzard are up to something. Last week a teaser page went up on Dell's site hinting at big news, but giving little detail. It's safe to assume that Dell has found a new way to market its XPS gaming line of notebook computers with the blessing of Blizzard, but how this particular pairing of corporate entities is going to play out is anyone's guess. This is not the first time the two have worked together. Last fall Dell and Blizzard gave away five $3200 XPS M1710 Limited Edition notebooks. That was just for logging into the game and was promoted by Blizzard. This new pairing is being promoted by Dell, so they may have something different in mind this time.Either way, you can sign up on the teaser page to be notified by e-mail when they are ready to send out their big announcement. There are also 6 beautiful pieces of World of Warcraft desktop backgrounds to download in various sizes.

When we saw this desktop wallpaper of Final Fight's most shirtless protagonist, Mike Haggar, piledriving a shark, we knew we had to post it. We also set it as our own wallpaper, then resized it and set it as our phone wallpaper. We've currently got an order pending at the printer's for our Haggar-piledriving-a-shark flag, which we plan to display proudly outside our home, as a sign of allegiance. To Haggar piledriving a shark. We think we've found the original sketch by Junkboy, but we don't know who did the awesome coloring. Our Google search, however, did yield another person's celebration of Haggar piledriving a shark: a plan to decorate an Xbox 360 joystick with the image.

Yeah, we've certainly seen wallpapers with a touch more satire built in, but there's just something eldritch about seeing an iPhone on itself. Baron Soosdon's Warcraft music video "I'm So Sick" is one of the most visually stunning Machinima films we have had the pleasure of spotlighting. His use of various filters and colorization effects as well as his eye for composition and movement has set the standard for this fledgling art form.Which is why I was excited to discover that he has made not 1, but 12 wallpapers from "I'm So Sick." And every one of them are direct captures from the video. You can see the quality of his work in the shot above that features Animia Everfrost, the lead singer of his music video. Head on over to his site to grab the free pack of all 12 wallpapers.

  • Connecting the Newton as a serial terminal

    09.12.2007

A little while back we linked to ByteCellar's Apple //c terminal, and now he's gone and put a Newton online. You can check out the whole setup in the gallery, but the short story seems to be that he hooked up the eMate 300 to a serial-to-USB terminal, and then ran it through his Mini. Pretty easy, he says, since he'd already done it with the Apple //c, and apparently it's just an experiment-- while he could easily keep it around for IRC, he says the eMate is bound to its eFate as a paperWate. And if getting the Newton hooked up as a terminal revs your engine, I was surprised to find out that TUAW houses the original Newton serial connector. Very impressive-- even in 1993, Sadun was doing stuff with Apple hardware that makes my head spin. Figgles, apparently, is her Newton. And finally, if you don't have the knowhow or the patience to hook your Newton up to a serial internet connection, you could always just pull an Ihnatko and fake it. How long has he had that sticker sitting around? If you're not up for actually stickering your iPhone, Jer Wood's wallpaper might be more your speed.[ via MacBytes ]

We were just talking about official sites this morning, and look! We've got an example of that very thing right there. The official page for Phantom Hourglass on Nintendo's Zelda site has been updated, and you'll never guess what sort of content is there! Unless, of course, you said "wallpapers, screenshots, and video." However did you guess?Still, it's Zelda, and that makes it special. We could handle a Zelda wallpaper for a while. It's just so blue.
