  • Fighter cut from UFC 2009 because of ... his hair?

Hey, UFC fighters. Over here. Would you like to avoid appearing in a video game without getting fired? We have the solution for you: Stop cutting your hair. According to Fight! magazine (via 5thround.com), UFC fighter Clay Guida was cut from UFC 2009: Undisputed because his trademark shaggy locks were causing clipping problems and creating issues with collision detection. THQ supposedly offered Guida money to trim his hair so that he could be included in the game, an offer Guida seemingly refused. We applaud Guida for not (essentially) selling his hair to THQ, but come on, he had to be cut because of his hair? Hasn't hair been in 3D fighting games since ... forever? Couldn't they have given his in-game model a headband or something? The mind reels ....[Via GameSetWatch]

NEVES, Yuke's Company's tangram-based DS puzzle game, is migrating to WiiWare in Q2. NEVES Plus, published by Yuke's affiliate Akinai Games, features the same gameplay as the DS version, in which players arrange seven shapes to fit into silhouettes. If the explanation isn't clicking for you, just try it!The WiiWare game, which is now Egyptian-themed for some reason, includes 500 puzzles, including some not found in the original. It also includes multiple modes for up to four players, including the ability for players to jump in at any time to help solve a puzzle or just bother you by waving a tiny hand around on the screen.%Gallery-48138%

Today, we've got two new games. On the WiiWare side, there's Evasive Space, which is a shmup without all of the shooting. Then, on the Virtual Console, we've got ... a shmup. Man, they sure love flooding the Wii with shmups. If you want to try Evasive Space for free, remember we're giving it away for a few more hours. WiiWareEvasive Space (Yukes Company of America, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Players take on the role of Konki the Stellar Guardian, who is charged with recovering stolen Constellation Stones that make up the heavens. Dr. Dark Matter and his space thieves have nabbed them, and players must navigate 20 dangerous time- and collection-based missions to get them back. Check out some screens in our gallery below.Virtual ConsoleLife Force (NES, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): An arcade shmup ported to the NES in 1988, players must navigate the inside of a giant alien that is infected by a strain of bacteria, shooting down enemies and grabbing power-ups when they can. There's also a weird sort of riddle that Nintendo included in the press release this week. Find it after the break. Gallery: Evasive Space

Look! More screens of Evasive Space, this time covering Acts 3 (blue, icy) and 4 (full of murky greens and browns)! There's a new trailer as well, which is a little more varied than the last one. Pew pew! Or ... not, as the case may be.Incidentally, we noticed some of you weren't overly keen on the idea of a shmup in which you don't fire a single bullet, but we're totally ready for a whole game based on the same premise as Geometry Wars' superb "Pacifism" achievement. We'll find out if this works soon enough: Yuke's and High Voltage just confirmed a January release on WiiWare.%Gallery-37316%[Via press release]

Hey, look, it's a pointer-controlled shooter on WiiWare! That's ... great. Actually, Yuke's/High Voltage's Evasive Space appears to have a somewhat novel control scheme, in which the pointer actually controls the direction of your flight and not just the direction of your shots. Oh, and also there aren't any shots. So really it's not much of a shooter. Instead, it's a collection of various timed (or time trial) challenges ranging from rescuing floating spacemen to navigating mazes to searching for items. All with nary a pew, pew or pew to be found! If this sounds intriguing to you, have a look at IGN's pile of videos (accessible in the sidebar of the embedded video or here) and check out their written impressions as well. It's apparently due out sometime in December or January for 1,000 Wii Points.%Gallery-37316%

  • Evasive Space screens fail at evading our attention

    by
    Chris Greenhough

    11.19.2008

The first shots of Evasive Space invaded our inbox earlier today, and apparently things get quite ... trippy in the Yuke's/High Voltage collaboration. Not Jeff Minter levels of trippy, but still pretty out there in parts. The game itself, which will cost 1000 Wii Points, seems to be a mix of open play shmupping (as seen in Geometry Wars) and more linear, contained areas. The screens in our gallery are drawn from the first two of the game's four acts, each of which will contain five scenarios to play through. In turn, these come in two types: either you'll be doing timed runs, or you'll be collecting stuff (spacemen, energy cells) while avoiding other stuff (asteroids, gas clouds). It's brave of Yuke's and High Voltage to release a shmup on a system overflowing with the things, but we like what we see so far! Hit up the gallery and tell us what you think.%Gallery-37316%[Via press release]

  • High Voltage, Yuke's collaborating on Evasive Space

    11.13.2008

High Voltage and Yuke's are combining their considerable powers to bring us Evasive Space, a brand new WiiWare title, in January. Appropriately, screens or footage of the game have evaded us so far, aside from a slightly natty logo. Yes, we know you like posts to have pretty pictures, because we like those too, but that's the cruel, harsh reality of life for you.We have some details, though, even if they are merely word-based. Evasive Space will be a "top-down shooter," one with twenty missions and a pilot called Konki, whose ship players will control with the infrared pointer capabilities of the Wiimote. There'll also be local multiplayer for you and three friends, and online leaderboards. High Voltage is growing rather fond of WiiWare, while Yuke's is becoming fond of making not-wrestling games, two developments we welcome.[Via press release]

Neverland Card Battles merges the strategy-RPG genre with the core gameplay mechanics of a trading card game. It's a card game first, an SRPG second, and this is clearly evident after having played and finished the title this past week. We know that a good number of our readers have read our preview from last month and have kept interest in the title. With the game releasing today, we know you all want to know: what's the final verdict? Read on after the break to find out.%Gallery-29219%

Lesser wrestling fans may find it difficult to decide which version of the annual WWE Smackdown vs. Raw game to get this year, but the choice should be made easy for true rasslin' aficionados. THQ just announced a Collector's Edition for WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009, and it's exclusive to the PS3. The Collector's Edition includes an extra Blu-ray disc with "a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the videogame, as well as more than two hours of WWE footage." The North American version with have a "steel cage packaging," while Europe and Asia will get their bundle in a mini-ring -- because you're not hardcore enough to step into a steel cage, son. The press release was shy on a price unfortunately; however, with a Sunday, November 9 release so close, we should have that info soon enough. [Via press release]

  • Yuke's announces BPM Racing for WiiWare

    09.30.2008

Yuke's Company of America has announced a cool new racing game for WiiWare with a twist. If you are familiar with Yuke's, you may think that "twist" is wrasslin', but thankfully it isn't (though that has been tried). Instead, BPM Racing is a rhythm-racing game.We aren't exactly sure how this works, but you'll synchronize your driving (in some way) to the rhythm of the soundtrack to increase your speed, handling, and score. Players will also be able to add "their own samples and effects to various soundtracks." Yuke's Company's Ken Koyama said in the press release that "The racing genre is ripe for a new, innovative direction and increasing the aural experience seemed like an obvious choice." To be honest, even if it doesn't work, we already appreciate this. The best thing about downloadable games is that it allows developers to create extremely risky games based on outrageous ideas without having to worry too much about their businesses dying if the games don't sell.

It is refreshing to see a game like Neverland Card Battles hitting the PSP. It's a title that blends together two very distinct strategy genres: tradable card games and strategy RPGs. It may sound a tad strange at first, having these two gameplay aspects merging as one, but that's what we're here for. We're here to help explain to you just how exactly that experience plays out and what it was like going through it all. Was it any fun? You'll find out soon enough.Having played the title just this afternoon, I immediately went through the very first level to get a quick grasp of the story and basic play mechanics. The game plays out on an S-RPG type of battle grid with the enemy card wielder on one side and the hero Galahad on the other. The objective of all Neverland battles is to obviously defeat your opponent, and to do so you'll have a 30-card deck at your disposal. At the beginning of each battle you'll have a full hand of five cards (see where the TCG is starting to kick in?), and to use these cards you'll have to draw mana. Drawing mana is done by increasing one's "territory" on the battle grid. As you move your character (and later on summoned creatures) across the playing field, they'll turn each square they touch into your team's color -- this represents your territory. Each square equals one mana and dictates your overall summoning strength, so it's crucial to take command over the battlefield in order to win. %Gallery-29219%
