  • Nerf N-Strike features Boom Blox-inspired game

IGN has the first look at Nerf N-Strike, EA's Wii game that comes with a hybrid Zapper/Nerf dart gun. It's going to be marketed as a hybrid as well, apparently, being sold in both the Nerf and video game sections of retailers. We gawked at the awesome gun a few months back when it was first revealed, but this is the first info about the actual game.As expected, N-Strike is a shooting game in which you use Nerf weapons in-game -- against Nerf-susceptible robots, as seen in the above screen. The guns apparently behave like real Nerf guns, which means that the projectiles move much more slowly than actual bullets. The game also contains multiplayer modes, one of which sounds quite similar to a current EA favorite. In Blox, players shoot one dart at a time into a structure of cubes until one uncovers a target block. It's a shooting-game take on Boom Blox, and it sounds like a pretty clever tie-in to the other game.

For those of you with a lot of plastic junk laying around, taking up space (remember, if you bought Wii Fit, you only played it once), there's hope! Sega has plans for your Nintendo peripherals, so you might be dusting them off in the near future.During an interview, SEGA of America president Simon Jeffrey commented that Sega is "fans of the Wii Zapper" and that their game Ghost Squad "keeps selling." As for the future, he stated that the company has "more Zapper games going," with the same "for the Wii Balance Board, although we have nothing announced yet." We wonder if this will tie in to that mystery Leipzig game?[Via Balance Board Blog]

Light gun game Wild West Guns rides into town the European Wii Shop today for its worldwide debut, complete with Zapper compatibility, six levels, four-player support, and a whole host of mildly offensive steretypes. Truth be told, it looks quite fun in the post-break trailer -- certainly a lot more engaging than, say, Target Terror. Far more importantly, it gave us an excuse to post a Will Smith video. Wicky, wicky! Defend Your Castle has also finally arrived, and is totally worth a look. • NES gets crammed into third-party light gun, plans a 187 on Bowser

Okay, okay -- we get it. So maybe there's just not enough room in a genuine Zapper to fit all the necessary innards of a Nintendo Entertainment System into, but it's just a bit weird to see the Big N's antiquated console crammed into some other light gun. Similar to the NES-in-an-NES-controller mod we peeked earlier this week, this unit includes a plethora of games and all the controls you need; just plug it up to a TV, pop a few batteries in there and you're golden. Is it any surprise this guy was tracked down on Ben Heck's own forums?[Via Nintendo Wii Fanboy]

During Nintendo's E3 keynote today, the promotional reel of third-party titles showed us something different about Call of Duty: World at War for the Wii. It will utilize the Wii Zapper!Aside from a brief clip of a young gentleman having the time of his life with the game, Wii Zapper clutched firmly in his hands, we've nothing else to report on the matter. But, then again, what else more would you need? It supports the Zapper.

We're sure that many of you have tried some sort of gun peripheral in your travels, and maybe even own one. If so, which one(s) have you tried? The Wii Zapper? The Nyko Perfect Shot? Something else?Of all the guns you've used, which is your favorite? And if you've only ever used one, what do you think of that particular model?

  • It's November or nothin' for Nerf N-Strike

Well, November or some other time or nothin', but we really wanted to use the old Nerf tagline, you know? In their original press release revealing Nerf N-Strike, EA assigned it a fall release window. A new listing on GameStop.com for the game provides a more definite release date: November 17, which puts it right in the middle of the holiday release season. If this is the real release date, it could mean that EA intends for Nerf N-Strike to be one of their major Wii releases for the year!In addition to the release date, GameStop also offers a potential price for the game, which also includes the mindblowing Nerf gun/Wii Zapper hybrid: $59.99. No matter how awesome the gun is (and it looks way awesome), that game had better be vast for that kind of scratch.

Still hunting for a Wii? If so, Circuit City's online store has them in around about ... now.Think supplies are going to last long? Hell no! Even though Circuit City is selling the things with an extra Wiimote, nunchuk and two of the titles listed below, we estimate these puppies will be gone soon. We'd usually criticize the practice of forcing customers to buy bundles, but we estimate that at least three or four of the six games being offered are must-haves: Super Mario Galaxy Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Wii Play Carnival Games Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Super Smash Bros. Brawl You're still here!? Go! Go! Go![Via Go Nintendo]

Is Mercury Meltdown Revolution a part of your Wii collection? If not, it absolutely should be, for Ignition's addictive puzzler must be one of the most criminally overlooked gems on the platform. And now Costco has it for $10.99, along with a bunch of other titles that range from pretty damn good to shovelware (oh, hai Pool Party). Angelina Jolie favorite Ghost Squad is also on sale, giving you a chance to knock terrorists from their speeding, swan-shaped jet skis, and save money in the process. If a better offer has come along this century, we've yet to see it.Below are the six titles that most stood out to us (the full list is past the jump); we expect at least two of these to be in your house by June 22nd, when the sale ends: Ghost Squad Sonic and the Secret Rings Sega Bass Fishing Mercury Meltdown: Revolution Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz SSX Blur %Gallery-24906%%Gallery-5667%

Update: Well, that was fast. Sorry folks, looks like it's sold out.Sad to say, but it's the truth. You can order a Wii right now from Circuit City, but you're going to have to bundle some stuff with the console. When looking over what you have to buy, however, it's really not that bad of a deal because you should be expecting to buy these games anyway. So what do you need to purchase? Well, the Wii console (duh), an extra Wiimote and two or more of the following games and/or accessories: Wii Zapper Super Mario Galaxy Wii Play Carnival Games Mario Party 8 Super Smash Bros. Brawl Considering that you were going to pick up Super Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros. Brawl anyway (if you weren't planning on it, may we ask if you're insane?), it's not that bad of a deal. And, for those of you still desperate to get a console, this might be the best solution.[Via Go Nintendo]

As it did in Japan, publisher Capcom will be releasing a Biohazard/Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles Zapper bundle on June 20th in Korea for ???55,000 (approximately $52.50). No word yet on whether any bonuses will be thrown in with early preorders, but it's very likely! Why don't these third-party bundles ever make it stateside? You'd think that Capcom, a company that has repackaged and sold to us the same game several dozen times in just three years, would be thrilled to thrust upon us yet another box bearing the Resident Evil logo! What's so great about Korea that they should get this package, and not us?%Gallery-3286%

  • Miyamoto: Link's Crossbow Training is FPS Training

Now that Link's Crossbow Training is coming out in the region that matters (Japan), Nintendo has begun promoting it with one of their "Iwata Asks" interview series. This time, Shigeru Miyamoto is back in the hot seat -- and at the beginning of the interview, he expresses surprise that producers Takashi Tezuka and Eiji Aonuma aren't there as well. Right away, the surprises begin. Describing his motivation for Link's Crossbow Training, which he sees as an introduction to the FPS genre, Miyamoto reveals himself to be an FPS fan: "I've always been into first person shooter (FPS) style games, 3D games in which you can walk around freely and see things from your own point of view. " He describes the perspective as "more comfortable, more natural," and then upturns the interview's tea table, saying that he originally wanted The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to be in first-person.Since this is an interview between Iwata and Miyamoto, you know that can't be the only awesome quote. There's a bit in there about explaining Link's gun use with a Terminator-esque story. You should really just go read the whole thing.

  • Duck Hunt lamp will inspire thousands to hunt for cheap Zappers

One reason that the NES Zapper, even in orange, is superior to the Wii Zapper: it makes an attractive lamp. Craftster user fluffypants happened upon one of the clangy gun controllers and, somehow, saw the potential for a lamp. A real Duck Hunt cartridge would have been too small to function as a sturdy base, so she made an imitation NES cartridge from cardboard and affixed it to the Zapper lamp.As if turning controllers into furniture didn't impress us enough, fluffypants turned a store-bought shade into a faithful 3D Duck Hunt scene with layers of cut foam. In fact, the shade is so awesomely Duck Hunt that the actual lamp seems a bit like overkill.

  • Miyamoto: Zelda team back in action

It's Shigeru Miyamoto speaking, so really we could have pulled any quote from Jeremy Parish's 1UP interview and stuck it in the title, or just said "MIYAMOTO SPEAKS: YOU READ IT NOW," but this is the most directly newsy bit out of the interview, which was ostensibly about Wii Fit. He denied that Nintendo is abandoning its core franchises (and audience) in part by saying "we do have the existing teams at Nintendo working on the kinds of products we've always made over the years. The Zelda team is forming again to work on new games! But to me, it's about finding these new interactive experiences and bringing them to people."Miyamoto spent much of the interview talking about Nintendo's love of the "hardcore gamer." Interestingly, he sees the upcoming Japanese launch of Link's Crossbow Training as the opposite of the normal Wii strategy -- the first step toward getting Japanese gamers used to first-person shooters.

With Target: Terror announced for the Wii, we realize now there's really no limit to what terrible shooting games publishers are willing to port, no matter how dated its visuals. As much as we miss the Friday nights from our high school years spent hanging out at bowling alleys and movie theaters ogling girls who had no interest in us whatsoever, we don't miss the crappy games that usually populated those nostalgic spots. Still, we suspect that we'll see a lot more of these late 90s light gun games on our fair console. What shooter are you dreading hoping to play with your Zapper? Area 51? Virtua Cop? Mad dog Mcree?!

Loads of Wii owners seem to have something in common: the desire to make something for their console. Often, it's a zapper, but the DIY obsession certainly isn't limited to gun-type projects. We've seen a lot of variety and creativity when it comes to fiddling with the Wii. What is it about the system that has inspired so much creativity in its short lifespan? Is it the inherent fun and whimsicality of the idea of motion-based controls? Is it the expanded audience? The mere presence of a wrist strap and the fun of pointing and shooting? Weigh in -- and let us know if you've made a few things for your Wii.
