Nyko's Xbox 360 Intercooler
This wasn't
exactly the kind of peripheral we've been searching for to upgrade our Xbox 360s here around the office, but hey, if
your box is overheating and you don't want to send it back to Redmond (or can't because of, um, certain "modifications"),
check out Nyko's Intercooler. Yup, basically it's just a fan system for better ventilating your Xbox, but the $20 you
spend here might might well extend the life of your early console. Then again it might not, and it could be another
effective way to create some more fan noise in your livingroom. Win-win if you ask us.[Via I4U]

Just orderd mine to the UK from Ebay :) woooo
im on my second 360 and i have not experianced overheating on this Xbox yet, but im not going to risk it because this is too good of a console to let it die!!
NeoteriX @ Apr 2nd 2006 10:46AM
I hope the next addons they make for the 360 include a nitrous kit, dual exhaust, high-flow headers, and fully adjustable coilovers.
LucasC @ Aug 13th 2007 11:28PM
And screw this cooler, the 360 clearly needs a hi-flow cold air intake.
Jack @ Apr 2nd 2006 10:47AM
You forgot that it looks wicked, wicked cool. (no pun intended)
GunForHire @ Apr 2nd 2006 10:48AM
The fans in the 360 are noisy enough trying to keep it's beasty hardware cool, I don't want any more of the things droning away. Seems entirely uneccessary as well, unless you live in a really hot climate.
And if you live in the UK and you have a faulty box that's overheating, you can just return it to your retailer. GAME and others have premium and core 360's in pretty steady supply now.
RammerJammerYellowHammer @ Apr 2nd 2006 11:44AM
Just picked mine up yesterday. Fan noise does increase a bit, and there is alot of hot air moving out the back now. Seems to be doing the job thus far.
jobogro @ Apr 2nd 2006 12:14PM
Typical of Microsoft to make a product that should have been so wonderful, but in fact, it takes 3rd parties to come along and help Microsoft get it right. Why they hadn't addressed these issues BEFORE they put the 360 on the market, I'll never know. But then.. when has Microsoft EVER released anything right first time?

To 6 and 7 - This is a completely pointless accessory unless, as I said before, you live in hot climate or have a faulty unit. So don't go hating on MS and claiming that they need third parties to solve their 'problems'. If you need one of these things you could just get your unit replaced/repaired...
B1gC72 @ Apr 2nd 2006 12:48PM
they didnt address it b4 because they wanted 2 get the console 2 market ASAP so they get the full head start on the competition. i mean im a Playstation fanboy all the way but i can c y they did it and everything. and yes, sony is guilty of the same thing. the first batch of consoles 4 just about any company is more than likely gonna b glitchy. but they leave it 2 the early adopters 2 find this out 4 them (remember the PSP square button and the PS2 disc read error?). so they made a mistake, and luckily there are third party manufacturers that have their back and if it works, then u really cant complain. id rather have noise than fry $400. (o an 4 the record, i dont own a 360 and dont plan 2. PS3 4 me! bring on the bugs!)

i have played my 360 for long 12 hour streches and no overheat problems...
i will probably buy this though just to accent the leds and black piano paint job i have on it...ahhahahahahahaha
Paul @ Apr 2nd 2006 1:55PM
modify it and put a couple of Vantec Tornadoes in it :) sure, the noise level will be about 60 decibles, but who can argue with 2x 89 cfm? hehe
a friend of mine got a couple of them for his desktop, and before we installed them, we plugged the power in and they actually push out enough air to make them hover over your desk, its crazy.
Im not going to give my name to a website @ Apr 2nd 2006 2:03PM
Im going to buy it, it's about to be summer anyways, it gets up to 90 degrees and dont want it to shut down on me while I play oblivion.....
Telerian @ Apr 2nd 2006 2:34PM
maybe I'm alittle lost, but I don't get what louder fans do to make a computer or 360 'cooler'
Daniel McGeary @ Apr 2nd 2006 2:35PM
@#12
Now I gotta get sum tornadoes, just to see them hover. :D
Ted @ Apr 2nd 2006 2:52PM
Sorry guys, this is a way better looking alternative if you keep your xbox in a home entertainment center...

Karl Viklund @ Apr 3rd 2006 12:53AM
This is useless. That was my first thought. I mean, it's not the actual Xbox360 that have been suffering from overheating but the Powersuply. So I don't see any use for this. Well, the company that produce them make some money at least.

What is with this myth? I don't understand. Give your 360 and power supply some room and it should be fine. If that doesn't work get a replacement machine from MS(Still dont understand why most peoples S key is broken).
An absolutely unnecessary device. Can't see why you would waste money on it to be honest, but, hey, it's your cash.
Jason @ Apr 3rd 2006 5:08PM
if you're worried about the extra fan noise just get some dry ice
SuicideNinja @ Apr 3rd 2006 8:02PM
"sony is guilty of the same thing...remember the PSP square button and the PS2 disc read error?). "
The PS2 "Disc Read Error" wasn't just on early machines. It was on versions 1 - 12 of the console. 13+ seem okay (12+ are slims). Sony was charging consumers $40 to fix it, too. Fixing those unofficially brought in money for me for a while.
There's the XBox and Thompson drives, but I rarely came across that problem. Just don't play burned DVDs in your Xbox and you're fine.
My 360 runs great, and it's a launch console.
Never had a problem with a Nintendo product.
The ZeroCorpse @ Apr 4th 2006 1:15AM
This is idiotic. I've played Oblivion (which REALLY cranks the system up) for six-hour stretches, and the console barely gets warm.
The ONLY people who have the so-called overheating problems are the fools who are putting their 360 and power supply in enclosed spaces, on the floor, on top of other heat-producing hardware, or just plain abusing it. I've had one since launch, and I've never felt the console get any warmer than my DVD player.
Yes, the fan is loud in some games, but that doesn't bug me. My 360 is across the room.
This is a device that plays on the hype from the anti-360 people. I work in retail, and we've sold hundreds of 360s, yet have only gotten THREE of them back with defects.
Ridiculous rumors cause ridiculous behavior.
Geoff @ Jan 30th 2007 5:02PM
I'm an IT tech, I bought my Xbox in December of 06. I live in CANADA and it's WINTER. My power supply is DANGLING from the wall, the xbox is sitting vertically on a solid surface, there is nothing anywhere near the power supply or xbox. I get 3-4 lock ups every night.
Just because it doesnt happen to you doesnt mean its a myth jackasses...
Marshall @ Apr 6th 2006 9:04PM
hey... i have a launch 360 and mine hasnt had any problems yet... it is pretty loud already but it does shoot out lots of hot air. I dont really think i need the nyko cooler but i will get it anyway , even if your system isnt overheating keeping it cooler could improve its performance slightly. Anyway... im considering sending my 360 in to get a new one back or something just in case mine has a defect i havnt yet noticed.
mike Zangari @ Apr 7th 2006 6:56PM
I say the heck with it, everybody go out and buy one it's only 20 bucks, Why anyone wouldn't want their console to run cooler is beyond me, yes i feel the 360's fans are already sufficient enough but i like the sound of it running cooler, just like a PC you want it to run as cool as possible, so don't listen to all thease guyz saying it's useless becasue it's not, plus I think it looks really cool attached to the console, makes my system look like more of a monster!

Just because you have no problems with yours does not mean that other people don't. I have mine away from all heat sources, and setting on small blocks at the corners so air can flow under and over it. I also have a large fan blowing on it to cary away the hot air. My xbox is always overheating to the point that I can't even play it anymore. So be happy that you got a good system but don't bad mouth those of us who did not. And by the way I'm a computer engineer so don't acuse me of "abusing" my 360, I know how to treat a computer. I'm sure some of the problems are from people not properly airing the systems, but it's not all of them. So don't call us "fools", becuase MS put out a faulty product.
Brad @ Apr 18th 2006 1:00AM
Like someone said on another website, the only reason xbox 360 cooling seems like a large problem is because those who haven't had a problem don't speak up. The vast majority of the noise the xbox 360 makes is from the dvd drive that spins up to insane speeds when you play games. I have played around with the exact same part # of fans that are in the xbox in a HTPC case and at 12 volts the fans make the same amount of noise as an average 80mm fan (yes I know the fans in the xbox are 60mm!) The new power bricks hardly heat up, and if you have an overheating one, call microsoft and get a new one. they will ship it free, like they did to mine (I live in Canada). Also why are all the sony fanboys bashing microsoft so bad? Doesn't anybody realize that the cell processor which is based on the SAME architecture and whos main processor is most likely IDENTICAL to one of the xbox ones, and has 7 more little ones which add up to millions MORE transistors and are all running at 4 ghz will have the same, if not greater heat problems. Geez, the powerpc core had the same heat problems of the prescott when IBM got it to run at 2.5ghz plus. The damn things have a cooling aperatus that is half the size of the xbox in a powermac and had to be water cooled in a dual core and dual dual core config. Thats at 2.5 GHz! The fact that 3 of them run fine at 3.2 GHz with such a tiny cooler and so little airflow is a technical marvel. If your having such a problem you should check the ventilation around the xbox and call tech support before making an a$$ of yourself online.
Micsterz @ May 19th 2006 9:42AM
I will say that I have been playing my 360 for quite some time and that when I play oblivion or PDZ or Quake4 I play for 8-12 streches and have no problems with overheating (other than with Oblivion of course but I have heard many theories on why that locks up from Overheating to Cache clutter) whatever, what i will say is that Microsoft sucks because they refuse to openly admit these are problems and merely offer to solve them for you past you 90day warranty if you purchase their exteneded warranty for $60.00, thats BS to me. I understand Paying 4 exteneded warrantys when u buy a used car, but not a NEW one, it's free. (excuse the metaphore) but it conveys my point.
overall the whole attitude of release now and patch/fix later is BS and as consumers we need to start banding together and make our voices heard, i want the lastest and greatest NOW but when I call tech support for MSoft, they said in PDZ my game save was corrupted and to delete and try again, 3x F*-that, great game I can never finish? Why don't MS just create a Defrag program for the 360 and make it free d/l content? especially if they know that cache and fragmentated files create issues.
ugh, I give up.
mike @ Jun 9th 2006 3:26PM
i'm on my second 360 due to overheating issues and about to be on my third. i bought the intercooler and it has ran flawless ever since. And to the douche bags who say there is not an overheating problem you need to know that you are horribly mistaken.
Brandon @ Jun 27th 2006 4:11PM
To the idiot fanboys creating the perception that it's the consumer's fault for the 360 malfunction: Thank god you don't have retard strength because life must confuse you everyday.
I have my 360 going out for a repair due to malfunctioning hardware plain and simple (so much that they are repairing it for FREE despite the fact it's not under warrenty!). I kept my 360 safe just to prevent heating problems and it STILL happend (I even never played the console more than 3 hours at a time). It overheated itself w/out even being powered on (seriously). The worse part is i'm not sure i'll ever be able to prevent it from happening again. I'm afraid to use the intercooler because I hear it causes whole plethora of problems in it's own right. It's a damn shame that I have to be this cautious in the first place. I've never had to be this careful with any console i've owned.
Brett @ Jun 30th 2006 6:03PM
to the tw@ who sed it makes there portable devices not work properly that is bullshit! how can u say that wen all it does is connect through the power supply its hardly gonna make them not work as it is the same power goin to the xbox!
Kungfu2 @ Jul 31st 2006 2:09PM
I was playing Oblivion and i totally abused my 360. Well not like through it down my stairs or anything......but i mean like playing it till 5 in the morning non-stop for two months and oblivion takes a lot to power. (i actually blew a few fuses when i first plugged it in :)) It actually worked ok in the winter, but in the summer it wouldnt boot my games. I mean i could play oblivion for about 2 hrs and it would say disk read error and the fans would slow down. Thats when i thought it was overheating. I didnt have a warentee so i was going to have to pay like $129.00 plus $25 dollars for an extra year warentee and a repair. So i went with the intercooler as a last hope of not paying sooooo much money. I got it and havent had a problem since, plus it will extend the life of my Xbox 360! :) .
JamesFP @ Sep 5th 2006 11:31AM
Has anyone thought that maybe Microsoft didn't address some issues so that some aftermarket companies could make a profit off of the console as well. I think that people would be complaining about Microsoft being a monopoly again and making too good of a product that other companies wouldnt make anything off of it because it wouldnt be needed. I figure as long as these aftermarket products are reasonable in price and are readily available i dont mind spending a few bucks for these products. I have also played mine and left it on for 2 days at most and never had performance problems. Finally I am not saying that any of you are wrong in thinking Microsoft should have thought about all of these things, but if you look at the overall product and performance, I dont see where there is a lot of room to complain. Especially considering what you get for the price compared to the PS3. Again this is just my opinion it may be wrong.
Steve @ Jan 1st 2008 5:11AM
No... Because Microsoft will ban you from live if they find out you have added anything to the console. Even if its to cool their crap off to keep it working. I hate Microsoft... Bill Gates is going to take over the world...
Hadjisan @ Oct 24th 2006 9:51AM
I think this product is perfectly acceptable.
After all, how can cooling it down cause any problems and with such a reasonable price it seems weird to knock it at all.
Only problems I have had with lock-ups and overheating is during my Oblivion binges, often lasting in excess of 8 hours.
During the summer when temperatures soared then I admit problems were plentiful with the game crashing regularly during loading but since buying this i've had no problems.
Albeit the weather is a lot cooler now being Winter and all.
mike @ Nov 29th 2006 8:07AM
what size fans are on this cooler? does anyone know? 80mm?
JustE @ Jan 3rd 2007 4:41PM
After reading all this, I've got to believe it would help with maintaining the temp on the unit here in Arizona.
And, at only $20, maybe I can use it as a disposable dust filter???
xbox306roxs @ Jun 29th 2007 5:46PM
umm yeah microsoft is telling poeple not to use this peice of equitment because it melts the cords on your xbox and it is deemed a fire hazard to your home. My personal experience with it is bad it is a waste of money. dont buy it!! you are very likely to not like it at all. Take my addvice and xbox supports addvice
highspeed @ Jul 4th 2007 12:41PM
So I got the intercooler out of paranoia,,, but I am in Iraq and it is very dusty here, sometimes my 360 doesnt play games, it tells me to "please put this disk into a xbox 360 console" and I have to blow hot air on the disk to get it to work, or restart the machine several times,, is there a way to filter the dust circulating through my machine? or is this not the problem..
john @ Feb 23rd 2008 3:51PM
fan will and does cause problims for your xbox in long run......power supply is not made for the little extra power fans need to spin... ring of death lights will happen from this product.... before sending back remove fan and turn on ( maybe need 5 mins) game on..enjoy if u really need to spend yur 20 bucks... by a sack roll it up and joy hd games...
