Nyko announces BluWave PS3 remote, ships charging station

Sure, they've invoked the letters "Blu" in the name, but the only way this remote's commands are getting into your PlayStation 3 is via nice, old-fashioned IR (and a USB dongle). If the price of entry was too high on Sony's Bluetooth remote, you can spend a little less on the BluWave and use the leftover cash on the company's other announcement -- its PS3 controller charger. The now-shipping $40 base can juice up to four pads at a time and gets its power in another nice, old-fashioned way -- your wall outlets.

For those of us with univeral remotes we'd like to be using, an IR remote with a USB IR receiver is a fantastic idea, no matter how ugly the remote. "Learn" it once and put it aside, then use the receiver and your universal remote.

I must say this remote is a waste of time and effort. You have the lovely PS3 BT remote at your disposal for only $24.

I've been reading a lot of news on various remotes and controllers out there. Is there any news on a PS3 Bluetooth keyboard and mouse setup? I'm currently using a Logitech setup and I must say its less than enjoyable.

If you look closely, this remote ONLY has buttons from the Sixaxis controller and many remote-function-buttons are missing when compared to the official Sony BT remote. This is basically a wireless controller made to look like an remote and nothing more.

This is useless if you cant turn on the PS3 with it. Still wont replace my Sony Bluetooth remote.

The only real solution is a small box with an IR reciever and a Bluetooth transmitter. If I had more free time I'd mod my BT remote to be just that, but on the good side the BT remote is incredibly responsive and now I wish all my other equipment used BT remotes.

I was almost immediately going to but this remote just so I could let my Harmony remote learn all IR commands and then never use the remote again apart from the USB IR receiver.

It seemed great, until I saw that this remote is missing almost all of the PS3 official remote's buttons, most importantly the on-off button.

Maybe I will buy it anyway (it is not that expensive), but if someone creates an IR to BlueTooth dongle for the PS3 that supports all functions of the official remote for all us universal remote users, I think that could be an instant seller.

At least than difficult/costly/inefficient solutions like http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=761809 are not necessary anymore.

Ordered the charge station in late January since it was scheduled for 02.01.07 release. After double-digit delay emails from Gamestop, finally came last week... broken. The blasted thing is pretty hard to plug into IMO but the idea is nonetheless great for owners of the PS3. Allows for putting the base on a shelf to charge rather than dangle a cable/controller from PS3/PC/laptop/etc and get in the way.
