Weave Mirror neglects glass, stuns onlookers
Rest assured, we've seen some pretty fancy mirrors in our day, but Daniel Rozin's Weave Mirror ranks pretty high up there. This zany installation relies on "768 motorized and laminated C-shaped prints along the surface of a picture plane that texturally mimics a homespun basket," and as curious mortals approach it, it "paints a picture of them using a gradual rotation in greyscale value on each C-ring." We know, you're probably still confounded at how this thing actually wows anyone, but give the video (posted after the jump) a peek and clarity will be yours.

It's umm... not exactly very quiet, is it.
I think that adds to the beauty of it.
It's sort of like a giant DLP chip.
Just add a colour wheel.
That's actually pretty cool. I didn't think it would "refresh" that quickly. There's also some really intriguing blue thing in the video that I'd like to see more of... (and a massive array of tilting pennies)
Um, is it supposed to already have a busted pixel (if that's what you would can one of the individual C-rings)?
^^ yep, wood mirror has been around since 1999, I remember seeing it on some tech show years ago... I'm waiting for the brick mirror next though.
Yep, and here is the obligatory video.

The "mirroring" of a regular mirror has nothing to do with glass. It has to do with the paint on the backside of the glass.
Less so the 'paint' as the metal, unless you mean the metal is painted on
did I see a dead pixel on that "mirror" (bottom middle)?
I was thinking the same thing, but I also thought maybe it was a camera??
There's a little gap in the same column, but closer to the middle -- I think that's the camera.
Old new but cool, this was from NYU TISCH Interactive Telecommunications Program prof, there has been one the 4th floor of the Tisch building (719 Broadway) for since at least 1998 or 1999.
Pfft... let me know when they come out with a 1080p mirror...
lol
They had one of these (or something similar?) on display at the Ben Franklin exhibit in Denver. Very cool.
Now thats cool!
Is that like this:

The W Hotel in Seoul has had this in their lounge for 4 or 5 years now. Interesting to play with, but nothing new...
