iPhone dev team releases free 1.1.1 unlock
The industrious rebels of the iPhone Dev Team have joined in the iPhone unlock chess match today, with the release of AnySim 1.1, a free unlocking app that enables iPhones with both firmware version 1.02 and 1.1.1 to operate on any GSM network. The hack only works with "virgin" iPhones right now, and unlocking a 1.0.2 phone and updating to 1.1.1 will result in a bricked device, but the team says they'll be releasing a "revirginizer" for locked 1.1.1 phones soon. As always, hack at your own risk -- and don't expect future updates to go smoothly.[Via TUAW]

Damn you guys report on this every 5 farking minutes
ethana2 @ Oct 16th 2007 8:47PM
It's a war. We won another battle. Keep me updated.
..and apple? We /will/ win. Keep this up, and the gPhone and OpenMoko will roll over you like a semi tractor hauling a double wide mobile home down a hill. I will be amused. You will be in financial pain.

"Don't expect future updates to go smoothly."
Seriously I understand the need for an unlocked device, but why would *anyone* want to do deal with this? It seems like a big pain in the ass and it's not even reliable.
Boynamedsue @ Oct 16th 2007 6:49PM
its actually not a pain in the ass if you're not a tard that goes "OOOOOH UPDATE!" and then runs an update on a hacked product you were warned not to update on.
I jailbroked my 1.1.1 ipod touch, and i won't be updating it again unless i'm prepared to say goodbye to all the cool shit i can do now.
it was the same with my PSP.
If you like your homebrew stuff, simply wait till the hackers have dealt with an update before processing it. Its not that complicated really.

Old unlocked iPhone is already on eBay, swinging by the AAPL store to grab me a new one for unlocking after work!
jason51873 @ Oct 16th 2007 8:22PM
While your in the mood for throwing money away - I can give you my paypal account - just deposit $420 in there (will go to a much better cause - like paying 1/2 my rent for the month)!
Penn @ Oct 16th 2007 6:33PM
dont you mean they'll be releasing a "revirginizer" to relock 1.0.2 iphones instead of locked 1.1.1 phones?
NG @ Oct 16th 2007 6:49PM
i have a fresh boxed one here, going to try the anySIM 1.1 tmr :)
Thanks dev team
DogGunn @ Oct 16th 2007 6:51PM
Geez, people are still going to use this? I'm sure it works now, and the NVRAM issue is fixed, but if anySIM for 1.0.2 is anything to go by, something else is damaged.
To be honest, I'd much rather pay $60 for IPSF which seems to do the job perfectly.
Alan @ Oct 16th 2007 6:52PM
It is great that Iphone is being unbricked!!! Now cut the price by 100$ more
Alan @ Oct 16th 2007 6:53PM
Why arent my comments being posted

Seriously guys, the latest hack takes advantage of a TIFF security vulnerability for which there is a known and available exploit probably making the rounds as we blog.
Not only are hacked phones wide open to this exploit, but efforts are under way to compromise even unhacked iPhones using this vulnerability.
As such, it is only a matter of time before this hole is plugged, and another hue and cry claiming "deliberate bricking" starts making the rounds.
Is this the way forward?
On the positive side, there's the possibility of an iPhone SDK now that Leopard is poised for release, so we live in hope...
dagamer34 @ Oct 16th 2007 7:06PM
Said exploit has existed for over a year. It's nothing new. Same way the PSP was hacked. Besides, how often do people go downloading .tiff files? O_o
Boynamedsue @ Oct 16th 2007 7:32PM
yes, because once something is patched. theres no way a hacker will ever find another way.
come on people, besides, the most exciting update was the itunes thing, if you really cared, i can see plenty of people hacking their ipods and iphones and not giving a rip about future updates.

"The hack only works with "virgin" iPhones right now, and unlocking a 1.0.2 phone and updating to 1.1.1 will result in a bricked device".....
This should say:
"The hack only works with "virgin" iPhones right now, and unlocking a 1.0.2 phone WITH THE OLD anySIM VERSION 1.0.2 and updating to 1.1.1 will result in a bricked device"...
They have confirmed that unlocking a iphone with 1.0.2 firmware with the NEW anySIM does NOT brick the iphone after the upgrade to 1.1.1. You would only need to run the new anySIM once more. It works with both firmwares without damaging the NVRAM. You should not try to use this on a previously unlocked iPhone with the old anySIM or iUnlock or any of the other first free unlocks. This is where the virginizer is going to come in. If you have a 1.0.2 iPhone, you would run the virginizer first, then you would follow a guide for a right out of the box iPhone.
Yojimbo @ Oct 16th 2007 8:17PM
Thanks for setting them straight, Nick! I was a little confused when I first read the post.
Dan @ Oct 16th 2007 7:55PM
No thank you to using this. The iPhone dev team broke my phone once, no way in hell I am letting them botch my phone again.
John @ Oct 16th 2007 8:17PM
Actually, YOU broke it by upgrading to a new firmware that Apple pretty much told you would kill your iPhone.
AndrewNeo @ Oct 16th 2007 11:18PM
That's like giving your phone and a hammer to a kid, asking him not to hit your phone with the hammer, and leaving him unsupervised for an hour. Yeah, you keep telling yourself it's only their fault.
uberfu @ Oct 17th 2007 8:52AM
So is Dan the little kid with the hammer ?
uberfu @ Oct 17th 2007 8:53AM
I would like to assume here that Dan is an adult with the ability to think for him/her self - using reason and logic even if on some minor level above that of a "kid with a hammer"_
That's the difference_
Jonathan-DBOSS @ Oct 16th 2007 8:00PM
Hey, more iPhone news, wooot!!!
Metime @ Oct 16th 2007 9:09PM
Damn - I unlocked my virgin iPhone minutes before this was announced :-) Ah well - will come around eventually...
Mortinus @ Oct 17th 2007 12:25PM
I believe the issue, my fellow tech-RSS subscribers, is that the definition of the word 'gadget' to this blog is; any device or product produced by Apple Inc.
Amit Patel @ Oct 23rd 2007 9:47PM
This is just Great and it helps people like me(who are on T-Mobile but do not want to risk screwing up iPhone by all other unofficial unlock hacks) a lot in making decision about buying the iPhone
i guess iPhone just moved on the top of Christmas Wish list
Thanks Dev Team
darkstar @ Oct 16th 2007 11:10PM
i went to apple store and wanted 5 iphones. the manager asked why? and i told him its none of his business. he ended up giving only 2. wtf?!?
why would he care how many i want? wouldnt they want to sell me all???
AndrewNeo @ Oct 16th 2007 11:23PM
Because Apple told them to only sell two per customer?
JJV @ Oct 16th 2007 11:48PM
they think you are going ti resell them unlocked and they don't want that. Its the same for online orders of over five iPhones. They get an email saying please join Apple's reseller program. Well thats what it said over at TUAW.
TG @ Oct 17th 2007 3:44AM
dude, when they asked you why you wanna 5 iphones just stay cool and tell them that you have a big family and so on.. I just bought 4 iphones but that worked. ;-)
uberfu @ Oct 17th 2007 8:59AM
If an Apple Store does not have a posted policy of only selling X amount of phones to an individual customer - then they are obligated to sell them to you_ They can not leaglly horde a product_
Shit - the stories say that "Woz" bought 6 on opening day_
Look for a big sign floating on a wall or something with a disclaimer - if there is not one in an obvious location - then they are breaking the law [in the US] when they tell you that_
James @ Oct 17th 2007 1:49AM
Just take 2 friends, a bum, or go in at a different time of the day to get your 5 iphones if you really want them that bad.
Pentium @ Oct 17th 2007 3:29AM
nice news...now the idea of buying an iPhone is swimming again XD!
Luke D @ Oct 17th 2007 4:48AM
I'm so glad I saved my iPhone's virginity (for this). ;-)

hi
i am running version 1.0.2 on my iphone and just for the fun of it tried "anysim" to unlock my phone.. but in the end when the software had stopped doing its thing it said something bout not being able to flash the baseband and the process had failed or something similar. then i wasnt able to even get the AT&T network logo even though the sim was in the phone.
so i uninstalled the "anysim' app and i was able to get back on the AT&T network.
1) now the question is that.....if i restore my phone and update to 1.1.1 will it get bricked because "anysim" had run some processes?
2) and if i do update to 1.1.1 and thankfully nothing happens how can i reinstall the nullriver installer ( i had originally installed it using ibrickr but i guess now i guess ibrickr doesnt work with 1.1.1 )
pls help me out guys
tang @ Nov 22nd 2007 1:43AM
