Poll: What OS are you running on your Eee?

So ASUS' little low-cost monster, the Eee, has wormed its way into the hearts and minds of gadget lovers, their friends, family members, and random dudes and chicks you know (if this year's holiday wish-lists are any indication). It turns out everyone wants a piece of the 7-inch heartthrob, and that got us thinking. With the multitude of OS options for the miniscule laptop (ASUS' Xandros build, XP, Ubuntu, Debian, even OS X), we want to know: current users, what OS are you running on your Eee?

Where's the "Eee is a horrible bargain and I'm waiting for them to put a 10" screen or a 7" shell on it" option?
fischju @ Dec 5th 2007 10:54PM
Indeed, a $500 dell with a 15.4" 1280x800, 60GB HDD, XP, 512MB RAM and a better integrated graphics card.........
jesse @ Feb 6th 2008 8:59AM
You're missing the point. That's like saying I should get an $800 laptop instead of an $800 PDA. A UMPC like the eee has a different application than a full-sized laptop.
Alex Padilla @ Dec 5th 2007 8:17PM
I wonder how many people will vote for this who don't actually have an Eee...
Kevin @ Dec 5th 2007 8:19PM
the fanboys who just want to see OS X in the lead?
plenty, i'll be willing to bet.
then again, i'll probably be low ranked now by said fanboys.
JohnTitor @ Dec 5th 2007 8:33PM
obviously more than expected
for one Mac OS X is winning
and more people apparently have it doing Amiga then the other Linuxs
rawhead @ Dec 6th 2007 9:59AM
You know what Kevin?
I had no intention of clicking OSX (or anything for that matter), even though I'm a pretty big Mac/OSX fan, since, after all, they're asking what we "are running" on the Eee, not what we "want to run", but after reading your smug little comment, I went ahead and did the ol' click-a-roo. Just to spite you.
Take that.
Kevin @ Dec 5th 2007 9:21PM
^ a really not nice person
Alex Padilla @ Dec 5th 2007 9:34PM
@ rawhead
someone needs to take a nap. or some anesthetics. jeez.
Reader @ Dec 5th 2007 9:57PM
I clicked Amiga because I felt sorry for it...
CraigJ @ Dec 5th 2007 10:04PM
People who just want to see the results...
0mega @ Dec 5th 2007 10:49PM
i voted XP, because thats what i would put on (I wanted to see the votes... >_< )
Josh @ Dec 5th 2007 11:13PM
I was thinking that looking at the results ( i clicked xp )
with so many OSX votes that begs the question of how many people are willing to go through the effort of making the OSX gel with the hardware (a problem i ran into on my OSX PC)
Seth Brundle @ Dec 6th 2007 10:23AM
I guess all the people who would like to see the results but dont have one.
My guess is that the #1 OS running on the eee is the *OS that comes installed*.
Ryan Karolak @ Dec 5th 2007 11:29PM
That's a good point considering that you can't view the results without voting. :S
JJV @ Dec 6th 2007 8:44AM
@ Kevin
That was pretty unnecessary considering Alex Padilla asked what people would run and i am a big fan but im not going to click OS X just because i am a fanboy. Since you are obviously saying that OS X users are proud of their operating system because it is obviously a lot better than what you are using because you are just mad that the operating system you use sucks and no one has any pride in it.
0mega @ Dec 6th 2007 8:55AM
HOLY RUN ON SENTENCE BATMAN!
I used OSX on an iBook for a while, easy to get used to, but terrible. I hated trying to use it, not to mention the community i went to for support wasnt exactly nurturing whenever i had little quirks i needed a bit of help with.
Go to a PC forum and ask for help (not a BAD one. ) and you get a bunch of different responses, any of which might fix your problem, so test them all.
Go to an Apple related forum (again, not a BAD one. infact, same place as the PC one for me. ) and ask for help, you get a bunch of things saying "Put your serial number in the site, itll tell you your iBook is dead" "yea the guy above is right" "yea wha the guy two guys above me said" ... USELESS. because all it took was a fucking reformat. My OSX 10.3.10 (i think... 10.3.something) installation was corrupted due to something my sister did or didnt do properly, and a REFORMAT fixed it. Go mactards!
If you want the mac based community to grow, you need to stop being elitist pricks, reach out and HELP the community by learning what IS wrong with OSX and how to fix it, because theres a hell of a lot more WRONG with it than right. it only runs on a very limited set of hardware for fucks sake! Windows has to run on everything, and my iBook crashed more in 2 months than my desktop has over coming up on 3 YEARS. (2 weeks to go. )
zargon @ Dec 5th 2007 8:18PM
People actually use OS X on their servers?!?
I don't even want to know what the eye candy(ass) GUI consumers.
yui @ Dec 5th 2007 9:10PM
Yes. i am. Whats wrong with OS X Server?
I am using XServe / Tiger for years. Its never halted, no BSOD, stable, and with good cost-performance.
JerkyChew @ Dec 5th 2007 9:22PM
We have four OS X servers in our network, with several TB of attached storage. We also have Win2K3, Red Hat and Solaris servers in our data center. OS X is secure, scalable and an extremely reliable OS. Obviously you've never used it.
zargon @ Dec 5th 2007 10:30PM
When I need to run unix/linux servers, I run unix/linux servers, debian to be exact. Not the sugar coated OS X that trys to pass as a unix/linux and defiantly not on Apple hardware. Especially since there isn't a XServe that could even come close to keeping pace to what we need for a lot of our servers, specifically our virtual infrastructure. I will stick with the real industry standard hardware, HP or IBM.
Apple's XServe just isn't a valid solution for real IT shops.
Jesse S @ Dec 6th 2007 12:03AM
Oh my god...OS X as a server OS?
HAHAHAHA!
John @ Dec 6th 2007 12:34AM
GUI? Most OS X Servers run headless, dipshit.
Also, if you're running a network with nothing but Apple computers, why WOULDN'T you use an OS X Server? It's the same as running a Windows server with Windows computers, or Linux servers with Linux computers. Less headaches, etc.
Of course, if you're into it, pretty much every Apple server offering has a freeware alternative for Linux, but that's a different story.
rip @ Dec 6th 2007 12:46AM
Yeah, I suppose all those Fortune 500 companies that use osx server aren't real IT shops... :P
Cause everyone knows you gots to have big iron racks for everything, including departmental servers...
zargon @ Dec 6th 2007 8:03AM
"Yeah, I suppose all those Fortune 500 companies that use osx server aren't real IT shops... :P"
You mean a mere fraction of those Fortune 500 companies, I would love to see numbers to actually see how many F500 companies really do run XServe and on top of that, which of those companies actually use XServe for their primary servers. I doubt many.
The Xserve is a low to possibly low-mid end server. When rack space is at a primium, a server like a XServe just isn't going to cut it. Like I said, it simply can't keep pace with what most companies need or expect out of a server taking up rack space.
We many only have 2,500 (soon 3,000 with the two new facilities opening) computers, but we are approaching 500 production servers. We have about 50 or so Macs and we do no run any XServes, we have no need for it. We also have been working in switching production servers over to our virtual infrastructure, which the XServe couldn't even dream of touching the beats that we have running that.
So I will say it again, a real IT shop isn't going to use the Xserve because it is a under power server compared to what is out there. The only shops that would even think about using it is Mac shops and it isn't absolutely need then.
ace_spades @ Dec 5th 2007 8:19PM
Where is the "I don't have one" option?
OLPC XO FTW!
Yossarian @ Dec 5th 2007 11:18PM
These polls all need a "show results" button. I bet more than half the voters don't actually own an Eee.
Just Click Vote @ Dec 6th 2007 1:24PM
I just click Vote without selecting anything to see the results since I don't have an EEE.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Dec 6th 2007 4:07PM
the real question is, Who IN HELL IS RUNNING AMIGA???
Farris @ Dec 5th 2007 8:23PM
"It turns out everyone wants a piece of the 7-inch hearththrob..."
Now that is funny. I'm waiting for someone named "The Todd" to chime in about that.
Farris @ Dec 5th 2007 9:15PM
Ooh, I got a better one:
"It turns out everyone wants a piece of the 7-inch hearththrob..."
Well, it ACTUALLY turns out that a lot of people are waiting for the 10 inch one.
:P
Andrew H. @ Dec 5th 2007 9:22PM
+1 for the Scrubs reference
Dave Skaggs @ Dec 5th 2007 10:37PM
Engadget Five! ::Whip::
Sam @ Dec 6th 2007 12:02AM
ahh... scrubs. Great show. I always love when people say "that show is stupid, its all childish humor", when in fact, they can't see that second level of humor due to their total lack of intellect. God bless sites like this where a group of mostly intellectual people (looking your way ignorant fan boy morons) can share their thoughts on a level that doesn't include Tim "I used to be sorta funny I guess" Allen and Charlie "I can't use an iPhone" Sheen. Cheers to the engadgeteers(?)!
Ryan Trevisol @ Dec 6th 2007 12:08AM
Hmmm . . . second level of humor?
Would JD calling Turk "brown bear" fall under the first or second level?
js @ Dec 5th 2007 8:23PM
The OSX choice should read "I illegally reverse engineered OSX to run on my eee".
Stupid Apple fanboys.
ethana2 @ Dec 5th 2007 9:08PM
You mean to say something about a class action lawsuit for Apple's evil abuse of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act?
Screw them. If you bought a copy of OSX, you should be able to run it on whatever the heck you please, and they shouldn't be allowed to try to stop you! More power to you!
That said, Linux is better, so I wouldn't bother. The idiots at Apple missed their chance to dominate the OS market. Oh well.
darren @ Dec 5th 2007 8:23PM
I'm running doom.
..sorry guys.
JB @ Dec 5th 2007 9:59PM
I think you could mention "doom" for just about any engadget topic and get good ratings.
Nubaeus @ Dec 5th 2007 11:51PM
That just made my night. I literally lol'd.
Luigi193 @ Dec 5th 2007 11:54PM
Doom
CosterMonger @ Dec 6th 2007 6:56PM
StarCraft?
Matt O @ Dec 5th 2007 8:26PM
you should be able to view the results without voting because people will most likely vote to just see them.
MadHat @ Dec 5th 2007 9:22PM
You should be able to view the results without voting
Just don't make a selection and click "Vote".
Maybe in the future the "Vote" button should read "View Results"
3rdsun @ Dec 5th 2007 8:29PM
I don't have one but if i did I'd run ubuntu just because the others are too bloated and 4GB ain't what it used to be
John @ Dec 5th 2007 8:32PM
Do you guys know if I can dual boot this PC with it original OS and XP? Then I might actually consider getting one.
Jamie Marsden @ Dec 5th 2007 8:51PM
You can, see the guides on eeeuser.com It requires the use of an SD card permanently in the side though.
Nipponese @ Dec 5th 2007 9:28PM
However, this is not a very good idea. Even with the higher end 8GB model, you won't have much left in you drive after you install the OS's. Maybe with the internal USB hack to increase your drive to 20GB.
bophojones @ Dec 5th 2007 8:33PM
I still find it humorous that whenever there are the three letters "OS X" involved, there is always someone who decides to hate on Apple. Even if it's a completely non Apple product involved.
Anyways, Xandros is running fine for me, but I disabled the easy mode to make it a little more useful. The EEE is definitely a great way to combat boredom in class.
JosephMohmed @ Dec 5th 2007 9:32PM
Indeed. And any time anybody posts anything slightly positive about Apple or negative about a competitor, that person gets low ranked and attacked for being a "fanboy." It's getting old.
