Our tip jar, it brings us so much joy -- and it brings you, dear reader, this printout of what's purported to be the Best Buy database listing for one of those
heretofore-unknown MacBook model numbers. You'll note that whatever MB402LL/A turns out to be, it's said to be in stock on March 2nd, which is just a few days away -- but also note that current MacBook Pros have MA-series model numbers, while the regular MacBook has traditionally carried the MB designation. That's interesting, but we doubt a $1,999 MacBook is about to surface -- besides, the current MacBook box is 15 inches square, smaller than the 17 inches listed here. (Yes, we measured.) As always, we'll see when we see -- come on
Tuesday, you're almost here.

Maybe a new MB Air model coming out also with a BD Drive externally! - Speculation of course.
Kasi Viswanath @ Feb 25th 2008 4:29PM
Exactly my thoughts. May be that "MA" means some new MacBook Air's. But, I may be wrong,
Lars @ Feb 25th 2008 8:07PM
You're not getting a BD drive thrown in for that price. Knowing Apple, they'd charge about 500 bucks extra for a BD reader.
Regarding this article: Why I am I supposed to care? I don't get why you're always reporting on crApple... I've never seen any "New HP model shows up in BB DB!" on Engadget (not that I would care about that either). You call this news?
Off-topic: I'm surprised to hear (from ZDNet) that Apple is doing so poorly financially. Sales are supposedly really bad. I thought everyone was in an Apple frenzy right now. I guess our crappy economy is affecting companies a lot more than I thought.
jmiday @ Feb 25th 2008 4:30PM
Is that why all the iDolizers save the packaging?
phanbouy @ Feb 25th 2008 4:31PM
repeat post
pismodude @ Feb 25th 2008 4:34PM
No, it's cuz you can sell it for ALMOST HALF of what you payed originally when the new model comes out two days later (it sells for one-fourth of the original price without the box)
Reid @ Feb 25th 2008 4:49PM
Actually you can sell it for about half of what you paid for it, 3-4 years later.
They actually hold their value pretty well.
osalom @ Feb 25th 2008 5:03PM
Actually I just sold my 3 year old iMac G5 3/4 what I paid for 3 years later... whithout the original package...
Curtis the Claw Game Master V2 @ Feb 25th 2008 6:04PM
I actually sold a macbook for $250 more then I paid for it 1 year after I bought it...I'm awesome.
duke @ Feb 25th 2008 6:02PM
Most the people I know with Macs sell them annually, getting roughly 75% of their money back which they put towards the newest model. They hold their value extremely well, as most decent laptops do, but they seem to do a bit better. I don't have a Mac yet, but I will be getting one tomorrow if these MBP rumors are true. I know a lot of people who are waiting!
Sindre @ Feb 25th 2008 4:30PM
i would like a 14" MBP! But that is not very likely..
jmiday @ Feb 25th 2008 4:35PM
that would be a Mighty Big Phallus; and yes, quite unlikely...
Ellianth @ Feb 25th 2008 6:28PM
Rotflmao. Holey shit. That's the funniest thing i've ever read.
Craig @ Feb 25th 2008 4:32PM
Can't wait, credit card locked and loaded.
iamwatson @ Feb 25th 2008 4:33PM
The box says 19" the product says 17.5"
MacbookPro 17"
bob sakamano @ Feb 25th 2008 4:45PM
not sure where you learned your math, but doesn't 17.5" = 17.5"
Arjy @ Feb 25th 2008 4:45PM
Yep, thats it.
Macbooks aren't due for an update just yet, unless they update those as well tomorrow. Main thing we need are new pros though.
iamwatson @ Feb 25th 2008 5:45PM
macbookpro 17.5 would be a stupid name!
Aaron @ Feb 25th 2008 4:34PM
Seems like Best Buy is quickly becoming a leaky faucet when it comes to Apple information...
Adam @ Feb 25th 2008 5:26PM
yea supposed information about apple. although this is probably pretty accurate, its simply because its 11th hour information. i don't think best buy had any more advanced knowledge than most of us, or at least if it does, it wouldn't be readily available to normal employees.
J'Ad @ Feb 25th 2008 4:35PM
What's the deal with the out-of-stock date? Does that mean we'll see ANOTHER update in June? Montevina? Do we have to go through this Monday-night-Tuesday-morning speculation all over again in 4 months? Meh, bring it on anyway...
Sean Flanagan @ Feb 25th 2008 4:42PM
Best Buy in Colma Ca. as of yesterday does not have any more MacBook Pro's on display.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Feb 25th 2008 4:44PM
Let's hope these new parts a big shebang. The gadget industry is getting more boring day by day.
strachanjm @ Feb 25th 2008 4:56PM
From what I understand, and they are talking about this ad infinitum over at macrumors.com, the fact that MacBook Pros use MA model numbers and MacBooks use MB is irrelevant because the letters are used sequentially. All knew product will have an MB model number because MA is no longer in use, and when MB is filled or used up, they will use MC etc. I think even with Apple's original computers, the model number just began with M and then numbers. Sorry if this information is incorrect, but as far as I understand it is true.
Galley @ Feb 25th 2008 6:35PM
MA indicates the initial product. MB indicates the first revision.
strachanjm @ Feb 25th 2008 6:45PM
Not as far as I understand. That's what the /A at the end of model number is for, not the letter following the initial M.
This is from the guy who runs macrumors. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=5034290&highlight=Arn#post5034290
Nikiski @ Feb 26th 2008 1:21AM
Hm... not quite. From my observations Apple part numbers have always started with MAxxxrr/i
While xxx is a 3-digit number, rr being the region (sometimes with only 1 character). I'm not sure about the i, but mostly likely it's "A".
When they ran out of numbers they simply switched to MBxxxrr/i. Nothing special. BTW xxx simply increases by 1 regardless of product. I'm guessing that there are part numbers that are reserved internally thus at times the number skips.
Harbo @ Feb 25th 2008 4:57PM
i need a macbook/pro/air with a better graphics card, and i wouldnt say no to some blu hotness either, shame it'l be £30000000 in england
phanbouy @ Feb 25th 2008 5:02PM
damn, that's alot! that amount in USD these days is measured in exaflops
Harbo @ Feb 25th 2008 5:56PM
its pretty annoying, things in the states which are $2000 are usually near enough £2000, a MBP for example. The math suggests it should be £1000, but thats pretty much how much I paid for the base model MB.. aint easy being a british consumer (whore)
thethirdmoose @ Feb 25th 2008 7:32PM
Why not just fly over here and pick up a computer? It costs the same, plus you get to see the US!
Karen @ Feb 25th 2008 5:03PM
Anyone else thin that 10LB is kinda heavy for a laptop?
And its too tall at 5.4" compared to the like 1" it is now?
Nilay Patel @ Feb 25th 2008 5:08PM
We're assuming that the "box" is the brown shipping box, while the "item" is the Apple packaging -- so 17 inches square and 5.4-inches high makes sense, as does 10 pounds.
Zak @ Feb 25th 2008 5:46PM
Random spam will not help your career.
Gadget Chick @ Feb 25th 2008 5:52PM
i cannot wait to switch to mac
adam dworak @ Feb 25th 2008 5:52PM
Not random spam, I maxed out my macbooks with the number of plugins i run. No macbook will ever be as powerful as my new machine. And as far as my career goes, its great, thanks! I work, go to school full time, and run a production studio on the side. Thanks, asshat.
Justin @ Feb 25th 2008 6:01PM
I'm a pornstar, and you mom is an astronaut.
Curtis the Claw Game Master V2 @ Feb 25th 2008 6:04PM
That was 100% pathetic. Good luck with your sweet career, maybe you can produce some hitzzzz
OneLove @ Feb 25th 2008 6:12PM
yawn!
CUBSWILLWIN @ Feb 25th 2008 6:32PM
Snore, Gargle, drool....
Zak @ Feb 25th 2008 7:15PM
Yeah, I'm sure your career is "great" if you're still WORKING and GOING TO SCHOOL. Maybe you just have a different definition of "great" than the rest of the world. Posting here just to link to a self-promotional video is definitely spam.
sammelmike @ Feb 25th 2008 7:16PM
If it says the box is a certain size and the item is a certain size, wouldn't the item size then refer to the hardware? If it's 17" square and five inches thick couldn't this be something other than a laptop?
Adam @ Feb 25th 2008 10:18PM
box refers to how it ships. item refers to what item will be sitting on store shelves getting scanned, not the physical "item" that you are buying.
adam dworak @ Feb 25th 2008 8:05PM
I'm sorry Zak, I havent heard your two albulms yet, or heard of you being a multi-national dj yet. Maybe thats because someone hasn't ripped them and put them on torrents yet. But then again, so far my career is "great" My apologies for offending you with my link. I'm not going to flame anymore...
Stuart Sickman @ Feb 25th 2008 8:19PM
My 12" iBook is getting tired. I need a new laptop. Unfortunately I'll be taking mine on a trip later this week.
I really want a new MacBook. The Black one. Just waiting on LED back lighting and a new Penryn Proc.
Roberto @ Feb 25th 2008 8:32PM
I am about to buy a laptop but i have to wait till tomorrow to see how cool the new mac book is going to be.. although i really don't like OS X I still love apple products (not all software pleases me). The mac book air's thinness still amazes me even though its a crappy computer...
(mac fan boys please don't reply, I hate any kind of fan boys)
Doug Rosenthal @ Feb 25th 2008 9:23PM
The info is wrong, the iMac has the MA in the model number, MB is the designation for the MacBook and MacBook Pro. You guys should really check your info before you publish these far-fetched rumors.
Source @ Feb 25th 2008 9:32PM
i can´t imagine this machine, 17.5in L, 17.2in W, and 5.4 H? that's to fat to be an imac, or a mac book, really disproportionated to be a mac pro and way to big to be an appleTV or mac mini, so....WTF?
Roberto @ Feb 25th 2008 10:02PM
lol the new mac book is super fat lol... more like fatbook pro
