Windows 7 in-depth technical info to be divulged in October
Windows 7, in large part, has remained fairly elusive thus far. Granted, we wouldn't expect anything different given that it's still years out from being formally titled and pushed to market, but it's still great to hear that we'll be hearing more shortly. The new Engineering Windows 7 (E7 for short) blog, which is penned by engineering managers Jon DeVaan and Steven Sinofsky, points to two upcoming conferences in which "in-depth technical information about Windows 7" will be revealed. The Professional Developers Conference (PDC) on October 27 will the first of the two, and the aforementioned duo has promised to keep a steady stream of details flowing on their blog during the run-up. Are you on the edge of that seat yet?[Via CNET]

Nice, can't wait! Last OS of the Windows family maybe???
tha-don @ Aug 15th 2008 4:18AM
probably. microsoft hates making money.
~~Tito~~ @ Aug 15th 2008 4:38AM
If only it would re think its system of explorer and all the other things that need to be updated. A whole update and re doing things that all software and registry's have the same production date or similarly timed production date.
toxicpiano @ Aug 15th 2008 5:47AM
Why did you low rank him? There is a possibility that Midori will replace windows.
bondsbw @ Aug 15th 2008 7:07AM
Even if Midori replaces the NT-based Windows, Microsoft is still going to slap a nice Windows logo on it. It would be marketing suicide to not exploit the brand power of Windows... remember, those who believe that computers and Windows are the same thing vastly outnumber those who know better.
Fred @ Aug 15th 2008 7:26AM
No, there is no possibility that Midori will replace Windows. It's been stated all over the internet already that Midori was just research and is in no way the next consumer OS from Microsoft.
Mic2000 @ Aug 15th 2008 4:07AM
I hope this will be good,
Huh a new comment system? Can I edit my comments now?
Mic2000 @ Aug 15th 2008 4:08AM
Nope :A
Mush @ Aug 15th 2008 5:00AM
this comment system update seem to be mainly a cosmetic update....nothing else
Phoenix @ Aug 15th 2008 7:50AM
a cosmetic change that made me click one more time to post a message and that makes it not remember my password >.<
If you're gonna change it, give us editing or deletion, or stop the lag in them appearing, and stop some comments randomly not showing up until you refresh the page a few times
skulldriveshaft @ Aug 15th 2008 10:12PM
Now here's something interesting, why can't I continue reading articles, even though it knows I posted a comment. Unless Firefox has eaten my cookies.
Luke @ Aug 15th 2008 4:17AM
Nope.. I'm sat back firmly in my seat not giving a damn.
gad get @ Aug 15th 2008 4:21AM

Nihir @ Aug 15th 2008 4:42AM
It definitely won't be Microsoft's last OS, but I think Windows 7 will be a turning point. Either it will suprise people by being a great release, or it will leave the door wide open for the rising popularity of alternatives.
oGMo @ Aug 15th 2008 5:21AM
That was Vista. With Windows 7, Microsoft will be lucky to get people to pay attention to *hype*. People are *already* moving to alternatives and not looking back.
Beef Stalmer @ Aug 15th 2008 9:52AM
Alternatives? I hope you're not actually referring to the geek-O-rama that is the world of Linux distributions, tarball compiles and incomprehensible commandline operations?
srrbrrgrr @ Aug 15th 2008 12:20PM
As long as by "alternatives" he meant "XP".
Nobody hates Vista and then goes to Linux. They just go back to XP.
Dan Halen @ Aug 15th 2008 1:37PM
"...the geek-O-rama that is the world of Linux distributions..."
hahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Ridgecity @ Aug 15th 2008 4:44AM
should I get Windows Xp 64, Vista 64, or wait for this stuff?
Ridgecity @ Aug 15th 2008 4:44AM
should I get Windows Xp 64, Vista 64, or wait for this stuff?
Skyride @ Aug 15th 2008 7:45AM
Do you have 4GB of RAM or more and programs that will use up every last byte of that RAM? Then go X64. Otherwise just get XP or vista. XP 64bit is one of the buggiest OSes ever. Even more so than vista was at release. I use vista x64 and its fine.
PynkFloydd @ Aug 15th 2008 6:32PM
I use Vista x64 with 2GB of RAM and it's lightning fast. (e6600 overclocked to 3.7, 8800GTS, etc.) Vista is made to adjust to the amount of RAM that you're using so you'll load programs that are frequently accessed faster. All games run on my system and I've never ran into a problem (aside from initial release where Nvidia decided that they didn't feel like making Vista drivers). I even run Crysis with all settings on High (some Very High) using DX10.
I've also loaded Vista 32bit basic on an old laptop (an IBM X40 and Dell x300) with 512mb of RAM and an old Pentium-M 1.2 and it runs MUCH MUCH better than XP. It's much more responsive but, you don't feel like it's an upgrade because you don't get the fancy effects.
You don't get much incentive for running basic Vista over XP if it comes down to paying for an upgrade. ...but, on a decent system it's definitely worth the upgrade to Home Premium or above.
Tired_ @ Aug 15th 2008 4:47AM
If, by seat you mean toilet, then yes.
BobTurbo @ Aug 15th 2008 5:06AM
I am still trying to come down from the mind-blowing experience of Windows Vista. Steady up Microsoft.. there is only so much my excitement glands can handle.
Armoured @ Aug 15th 2008 5:18AM
"still years out from being formally titled"
Does that mean it won't actually be called Windows 7? I hope not, cause Windows 7 sounds really good
Dylan @ Aug 15th 2008 5:34AM
Personally I'd settle for XP2; just play it cool and act like Vista never happened.
Ryan Trevisol @ Aug 15th 2008 7:23AM
Well at WinHEC (oh, what was it, the heady days of 2004? 2003?) We got the first builds of Longhorn. That was before the days of Torrent, buddy, and you had to go on IRC to get the leaked ISOs. All so you could load up a version of windows that took 45 minutes to boot. But I digress.
So, no it probably will not be named Windows 7, and it will probably be released in 3 (or was it 4?) years.
The thing I remember about Longhorn was, it was way more impressive and exciting than Vista seems to be.
In vista, can your file system handle contact management and extensive meta-data? (It's an honest question, I remember that feature from Longhorn but I'm sure it got axed)
Dylan @ Aug 15th 2008 5:32AM
Personally I'd settle for XP2.
Vista never happened.
pfromg @ Aug 15th 2008 5:35AM
I will skip generation vista , so if MS wants some of my cash they will have to nock out something fresh clean or i'll end up with Apple.
BoloMKXXVIII @ Aug 15th 2008 6:39AM
It will run at least as fast (slow) as Vista (hopefully faster), will have the same kernel and be DRMed to death. Oh boy, I can't wait.
Lancelot @ Aug 15th 2008 11:55PM
Can anyone say "Vista SP-32".. Only this one will cost you $$$..
Bas @ Aug 15th 2008 7:27AM
DRMed to death eh? So you think the ability to play all kinds of media is a bad thing?
Skyride @ Aug 15th 2008 7:48AM
How many dumbasses dont get this, DRM is at program level. Its got nothing to do with your OS. For every 1 person worknig on DRM. Theres another 10 guys trying to crack it.
Example: Nvidia Quadro Cards cost money because of the drivers, not the actual cards. I just hacked the drivers to run with geforce cards. It works fine now.
neofolklore @ Aug 15th 2008 7:33AM
By then Fire Leopard will be out and the avatar will be nowhere to be found
Skyride @ Aug 15th 2008 7:51AM
Im just hoping that MS dont mess this up. Im always going to be using windows on the basis of the large developer base, thats more important to me. Its my applications that do my work, not my OS. So i'd like more choice thanks.
Im looking forward to windows 7. Also anyone commenting here they aren't going to buy the hype about windows 7 after vista is wrong for 1. even believing the hype about vista being faster, more reliable etc,,, in the first place and 2. Contradicting themselves by actually even reading this article. :)
chefgon_ign @ Aug 15th 2008 8:00AM
I never figured out why this new Windows is #7. The last numbered version that I know of was NT4. That would make Windows 2000 version number 5, XP version 6, and Vista would be number 7. That would leave the new version at number 8. Which one of these major revisions are they skipping in their little numbering game?
Ashish @ Aug 15th 2008 8:32AM
Windows 2000 was 5.0, Windows XP was version 5.1 (since it as essentially a dressing up of Win2000), Vista was version 6.0
They are the versions of the underlying NT kernel.
Therefore, Windows 7 will be v7.0 of the Windows NT kernel.
Golfnut @ Aug 15th 2008 8:43AM
Wow, leave it to M$ to start the hype about something that is over a year away. Vista is a POS, so they'll start touting Windows 7 [aka Vista SP3]. LMAO...
Face it, Windows is tanking. People have had enough...
PynkFloydd @ Aug 15th 2008 7:06PM
Wow! How did you know that the majority of commenters in a Microsoft article give full credence to someone using the "M$" reference?!!? You're amazing!
Do you have any lotto numbers to share?
...go back to "SkOoLz" dumbass
BirdofPrey @ Aug 15th 2008 9:27AM
Hopefully they will avoid the false start they had with Vista.
Most of the Vista problems stem from driver issues and incompatable software because MS released it too soon and developers weren't ready for a new kernal. (Vista uses a different Kernal than XP which handles hardware differently)
MEAT! @ Aug 15th 2008 9:52AM
"Hello! Welcome, all you eager developers. Thank you for coming. I'm Jon DeVaan and next to me stands Steven Sinofsky, and as you know, we're here to tell you all the technical details about Windows 7, Microsoft's next OS. Well, surprise! It's the exact same as Windows Vista. We didn't redesign it from the ground up, strip out bloat, or even add functionality for developers--but the media companies _sure_ do love this new DRM....Incidentally, we'll be selling coffee and doughnuts for $1 in the back of the auditorium. Please buy several."
Aaron @ Aug 15th 2008 10:23AM
Cannot WAIT! They'll announce all the great new features they are going to abandon months before release. Fingers crossed that they'll announce WinFS again. Maybe another try at that apps-to-endpoints audio manager? I can't wait until this new batch of excellent ideas finally disappear into the bottom of some press release and then eventually pushed to Windows 8.
Xin @ Aug 15th 2008 11:06AM
I see some random people bashing Vista again.
I guess I'll say what I said last time.
Anyone else noticed the lower/inexistent amount of viruses they've gotten from downloading pron?
srrbrrgrr @ Aug 15th 2008 12:25PM
No, but I do know the performance issues from XP to Vista.
