Still haven't gotten that
Android 2.0.1 OTA update on your Droid? You're not alone (most people are still waiting for 2.0 on their Android handset, you self-centered power user, you), but luckily there's a simple solution. Basically you just have to manually download the update file, copy it to an SD card and restart your Droid while tapping out a simple succession of hardware keys. You can check out the "detailed" and "badass" versions of the instructions at the two respective source links below.
Wouldn't a simpler solution just be to wait your time?
@slipdisc update detailed for the impatient.
maybe read the title next time
@slipdisc
As a general proposition, waiting sucks.
@seb read the title? lol. what the f&@k are you talking about? I read the title and the article. I generally don't comment on the sensational titles. Titties yes but titles, not so much. My comment was in reply to the article, not the title. LOL Maybe read the comments next time ftw.
@seb yeah man, what the lowercasefampersandatk are you talking about?
@slipdisc
impatient? I remember when the 1st G1 OTA took over a 8-10 days for folks to get since the announcement.
The OTA is 2 days old, talk about impatient. When you thought desktop syncing updates was a pain, OTA updates have made folks hypersensitive to features.
If you think about it, freedom (OTA, no desktop sync) sure is a drug folks crave.
@N900 Uhh, he's talking about the fact that this article is for the impatient, so "just wait your time" isn't as attractive.
@Pendergast I know. I was joking on the fact that people that guy censored "fuck".
I wonder if this fixes the newly found method of rooting?
@B3astofthe3ast
no it doesn't just reapply the root "update.zip"
@B3astofthe3ast
Root still works with 2.0.1
@B3astofthe3ast Root still works. Just need to run the root update again after installing 2.0.1
@B3astofthe3ast What is rooting? I see a few people talking about it here...
@B3astofthe3ast actually, the rooting method came about because of the 2.0.1 update.zip file
Ya what is rooting? I like the update. Would like to see a shortcut to custum settings for different environments like "in bed","at work" ... Also I would like to be able to email videos recorded. Lastly where is the car cradle??? I really want to get one!
What do you think guys...play it safe and wait, or risk (something?) and do it now?
@yulebellow you can't really mess anything up. it is super simple...plus it seems to fix all the random reboot problems..so i say it is worth it to update now.
@yulebellow I did it this morning and submitted to Engadget the link from Boy Genius Report - it works great.
@yulebellow
I did it yesterday. No real problems. When it started I did get a warning message, something about no backup found. I'm guessing that the OTA update maybe does some kind of backup before the upgrade, in case things go really wrong it can then rollback. Anyway, everything worked fine. I'd make sure your battery is charged, you don't want to lose power during something like this.
All that being said I'm not seeing any big improvements. You aren't going to miss out by waiting a few extra days.
Meh, I'll just wait for it to come OTA, not really worth the effort in my opinion.
@(Unverified)
Sooooo, that would make you patient? This is exclusively for the impatient. Sorry, the update for the patient comes out later.
Only took like 5 minutes and the speed bump is nice. As long as you have full power battery the risk is minimal.
I received my 2.0.1 update OTA last night (12/10) at 12:20am. I was notified at the home screen that an update was available.
The only obvious UI change was that the slide to unlock is now a line instead a curve. The system definitely seems snappier now.
nope it does not break rooting. i am running 2.0.1 on my droid and it is also rooted
I did it yesterday and it worked like a champ. A great phone is now even better, defiantly enjoy the new lock screen.
I will probably root my phone today.
A few people mentioned more lag in the browser, never good.
@rollsroyc3 it does not seem to be a widespread issue though.
my browser is working the same, if not a bit snappier from the general OS speed increase
@rollsroyc3 I don't know where they are getting that from. Most likely haters. Honestly the browser is working much more efficiently.
My Droid has been 2.0.1 and rooted since last night. It's so much snappier and responsive. It's like it got a HUGE processing improvement.
@surfernerd6987 Perhaps they enabled the Dalvik JIT?
@(Unverified) I have a feeling your quite correct. I'm anxious to start messing with the CPU timing. But I'm going to sit back and watch this rollout before I start tinkering myself. Last time I was the guinea pig, I bricked an iPhone 3G
It works flawlessly. Just follow the directions. I took the chance and I bought the phone three days ago. There's a lot of fixes that help the phone.
* Speed Boost in Browser
* Battery Life Improvments
* Auto Focus fixed in cam
* Black Widgets & New Unlock Screen
* Flipping through pages seem smoother.
@s7artan007 I wonder when the in-store models will have the update... would like to play with 2.0.1 since 2.0 felt a bit laggier than I'm comfortable with.
Ok guys. I just updated from 2.0 to 2.0.1, and there are a ton of differences. First off the menu stuttering is fixed! Everything seems to be moving faster in terms of GUI (animation). Apps are opening more smoothly and closing faster. Three way calling is working flawlessly for me. The Android default browser seems to working faster (not that it needed to). A big change is the default LOCK screen is changed. The intro (when powering on) is changed and looks cooler. For anyone trying this you have to HOLD both the camera key and volume up key when you get to the /!\ screen.
For anyone interested: Version: 2.0.1
Baseband: C_01.3E.01P
Kernel: 2.6.29-omap1-g0dd7e0bandroid-build@apa26#511
@heatgap
Can you switch the clock and verizon to be centered the old way like on 2.0? The new way doesn't look good at all. The unlock button doesn't bother me even though the old way does look better. Whats up with this, they supposed to make it look and perform better not perform better and look uglier. =(
@xFenixKnightx Yes bud, the clock and all of those things are pretty much widgets and can be placed right/left/center/above/below. You will love how customizable this device is. Honestly man, you have no idea until it's in your hands but this is the best gadget I've owned in years. I am not a huge cellphone freak but I love this phone. Switching from WinMo to this was hard for me, but I'll never look back at this point. The DROID really does own.
@xFenixKnightx I don't believe you can change it. That's just the new lock screen. It would be nice to have the option of keeping the old one, but oh well.
@heatgap Hoping you can help me out...I'm not seeing the link to the directions here, and my phone's not finding a system update as the VZW site says it should, and as happened with my G1 some time ago. Just wondering why the article says there are two different versions of the directions, and I'm having trouble finding either...
Note that while the 2.0.1 upgrade does not prevent the root update from working it does remove the setuid bit on the su binary breaking root access.
This can be fixed by just re-running the root process but if you are doing both for the first time, upgrade to 2.0.1 first then get root.
@jlee123 This didn't affect my access to root at all bud. I've got root still.
I'll wait for it OTA, but still desperate for it to come in... Especially because my service at home is shitty, but at work I get full service, so I'm hoping it drops to my handset at work.
I'm really looking forward to "What would you change about the Droid" from engadget, aside from the snarky iPhone fanboys, there are some solid improvements that I'd love to see come via software update in the future.
Really easy.... worked great! Thanks guys!
LAME!
@(Unverified) Why? Because now there's no flaws for fanboys to point out?
@heatgap
Try making a call while surfing the internet or playing a game. And if this is the type of hoops one has to jump through to get upgraded, the average consumer won't deal with it.
@(Unverified) Whoa, whoa? Have you been trusting those silly Apple commercials a little to much? I have used G Maps, internet browser, and a game why making a txt/call. In fact, I looked up a recipe (in the browser) for my mom on the fly while talking to her this morning (during a call). Just because AT&T rattles that off in a commercial doesn't make it so.
@heatgap
Verizon doesn't do data and voice at the same time, so, sure thing buddy.
@heatgap

Why anyone would NEED to do voice and data at the same time is beyond me. Who wants to wait on the phone while someone looks up something over 3G.
I'd argue that the Android OS handles multitasking better, and since most things that i would want to look up (like an email someone sent me, calender, notes, etc) are stored on the phone.
@heatgap
You were probably connected to an access point if you used voice and data at the same time, as Verizon's network is not able to do both simultaneously.
@bstock
Oh I don't know, maybe while you're on the phone with a client you can look up something on the internet or an email they sent a verify something. That's just one example, I'm sure there's 1,000's more.
Funny how people try to justify some thing when it's not available. iPhone user's do this to, it's a two way street.
