Palm introduces Palm Pre Plus: 16GB, coming to Verizon on January 25th
No surprises here, but Palm just dropped its "big news" here at CES -- or half of it, anyway. The Palm Pre Plus will ship with twice the internal memory of the original (up to 16GB), a standard induction cover for Touchstone charging (it was an option before), an omitted navigation button on the front panel (to keep it clean, we guess) and a Big Red logo. You heard right, this one's hitting Verizon Wireless on January 25th! We're still waiting to hear back on a price, but we'll be sure to pass it on as soon as that goes official.

Update: Video's after the break!

Did I see double the storage to 16gm AND more memory (RAM)?
@Crb Yep. Double both RAM and storage.
Darren, update it!
That shoulda said 16gb...not 16gm ;)
@Crb Link to that? Where?
Because that'll help multitasking a lot, methinks...

@Jon Rubinstein nice
@Jon Rubinstein gotta hand it to you. The presentation was amazing, you hit us all with some surprises, and they were all great. I sure do wish Sprint had the mobile hot spot, but in due time I'm sure we'll see improvements there too. I appreciate you joining in the conversation.
@Crb PALM FAIL!!!
I'm done bagging on Palm at this point... I'm just sad for them...
I have seen what android has managed to do in the past few months and they dont seem to be doing anything but picking up steam... Androids offerings make Palms look like a sick joke...
then you have apple waiting in the wings to hit it out of the park in the next few months...
goodnight sweet prince... palm deathwatch begins today...
Wow, that time has finally come, Verizon getting the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi - awesome!
@kyleballard
Damn are you alright, don't you know that's not the real Jon?
@PalmIsGarbage
What palm has shown off today is far more exciting than anything that has happened in the android world right now. The Nexus One is the coolest thing to come out for android recently, and that honestly left me kind of underwhelmed (love the specs, hate the lack of keyboard).
@Mikeo
indeed, he should update it to reflect the fact that this bad boy will have double storage and double the memory. if this was an iPhone announcement, they would make sure to list every damned detail in the article but not for the Pre...
@Thinker Yes, I'm an avid palm user of the decade although the specs of the plus version is not what you called exciting. Hopefully they can still be at par with the other 'super smartphones' this year.
Not really yawning but not just competitive as your 'other smatphones'.
Both new Verizon handsets will arrive on the market on January 25th; however neither Palm nor the carrier have announced pricing or not. They’ve also not revealed what extra fees there might be for tethering functionality. More of the specs and details: http://bit.ly/palm-pre-plus-pixi-plus-details
.
Well, I can leave Verizon in a couple months when I'm due for an upgrade... I've been thinking of going to Tmo; but maybe I will add another two years to my contract and stick with V. So many hot phones are either out now or coming-out for Verizon it's tempting to stay; but Tmo's new pricing is pretty hot too. What to do, what to do....
@bhsx
stick with Verizon! Either get the Palm Pre Plus or give a few months wait for the Nexus One. Either way, a great phone on the best 3g network is bound to mean good things. Of course if you can get past the prices, but then again, we're get what we pay for right?
I wonder if there are any other hardware updates besides the button removal, I remember some users complaining about the build quality.
@madvad yea, that would interest me aswell.. a lot of people had to return their pre I think. I hope they managed to get the plus version a bit more robust..
@madvad
They have already fixed the build quality of hte Pre by quite a bit over the past 6 months. The ones they are manufacturing now are fine for the most part.
@DrDr
Not the one I bought brand new in October.
@madvad Build quality is usually improved continually after a device is released, not that I know how good the Pre is now vs. at release. For example I remember them fixing an issue with the battery not fitting snugly inside about a month after it was released.
@madvad Build quality is "better" but it is far from being acceptable. WebOS is fantastic but the hardware so far absolutely sucks so I'm pretty disappointed that they didn't just come out with something entirely new.
@madvad It looks a little different. The Pre Plus looks thicker, and when opened the profile is a different shape than when I hold my phone up to it. Could be the picture though. Or my eyes. Regardless, hopefully they've fixed the hardware issues. My screen catches when I open it up, which ain't good. I've got an original Pre so I don't know about the improvements they've made since.
@madvad
Id look out your android has sprung some sought of a leak.. brake fluid maybe? You should probably get that checked out..
@madvad And I wonder wether there will be SIM Toolkit in this one... I guess not LOL
I bought 2 Palm Pre phones in June 2009 (about 7 months ago) - the build quality has been rock solid! And webOS is fun to use. Plus, the Palm Pre phone comes with a 1 year warranty.
Just like I said on the Pre article... Palm leaves its loyal Sprint customers in the dust. I'm certain there are quite a few Sprint customers who would love to upgrade from a Pre, or from another phone to the Plus.
Screw yourselves, Palm. I'm pissed with all these phone companies being exclusive to one carrier or another.
@HurricaneDC
I wouldn't get your undies in a bunch over the RAM. Unless you're running a ton of apps at once it's not going to ruin the experience. The Processor and 3D Chip are exactly the same.
I suppose it could affect 3D performance if games become large and cumbersome, but I don't think that's how games are programmed for these devices. The fact that people have 4 and 5 instances of doom running on one rooted Sprint Pre indicates the RAM isn't the bottleneck.
@HurricaneDC I gotta agree with you. I am a sprint customer and I would love the Pre plus, BUT NO!! The pixi just came out a few months ago and theres already an upgrade, Palm is pulling an Apple. Whatever screw this, I am switching to AT&T in the spring so at least I get some WebOS and Android choices.
@HurricaneDC
That's business dude. Either cough up the ETF or sit down...
It's not going to change...
Sprint users I feel bad for you but that's the name of the game.
Although couldn't buy this phone with Verizon break your contract and then use it thru Sprint instead?
@HurricaneDC
I'm pretty sure that Verizon wanted exclusivity, not Palm. Blame the company that is actually at fault here.
@HurricaneDC agreed
@HurricaneDC
Guys guys relax! Sprint has been Palm's hardware launch partner for years, and that isn't changing. This isn't the Pre2, this isn't a Preo, and it isn't an WebOS tablet. I have a Pre on Sprint, and don't feel slighted at all. Am relatively certain within 6 months Sprint will have a hardware upgrade for us well worth the wait.
I am with Sprint, and I am extremely pleased with their service. I am happy for the people at Verizon, they have been waiting 7 long months, they deserve to get a phone that comes with more features. Likewise, when it is time for me to renew my contract, I would expect to get the latest hardware innovations in my new Palm Pre phone. This is what gadget lovers expect.
This is a good day for Sprint customers who purchased the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi smart phones. We are finally getting video recording capabilities, 3D games, and much more. We should all be thankful! Thanks Palm.
They didn't mention the other GREAT news... FLASH 10 support coming in Feb update.... PDK released to devs... and LOTS of new 3-D games being released today including Need for Speed! Not to mention full video and editing functions!
The RAM thing is what bothers me more than the storage, though that'd be nice too.
Oh well, hopefully by June, when I'm eligible for a new phone with Sprint anyway, they'll have the more RAM version (and maybe 32GB flash?)
this doesnt have colored number keys anymore. I liked hte orange on the Pre.
@jhoff80 Same, I don't use my Pre as a media player so I don't care about the storage...I doubt I'll be able to fill up my 8 gigs with just apps. What does piss me off is that I'm stuck with half as much RAM and a center button that I don't need.
@Demo22
How in the world do you manage to be pissed off by the presence of the Application button?
sooooooooo how about that 16 gig pre for Sprint?
Build quality wasn't so good on the first. Also the buttons are too damn small. If they just removed the button i don't see how this is a pre "Plus"....
exclusivity keeps the consumers salivating
What palm really needs is a big marketing campaign if they want to directly compete with Apple and Android. Android was unknown in the mainstream market before the Droid campaign.
@Titanium Man
Palm does not have deep pockets and the Pre plus is likely not significant enough an upgrade to attract significant new users compared with newly announced phones from HTC, Motorola, etc. Opening it up to Verizon will help but the lack of true hardware updating (aside from an extra 8Gb of RAM) suggests Palm doesn't have a big development budget. From being at the cutting edge and stealing the stage at the last CES, its now just trying to catch up.
@Canucker "extra 8gb of ram"? I don't wanna be an ass but I'm not sure you know your tech info. If the Palm Pre Plus was getting an extra 8gbs of ram, that would be a SIGNIFICANT update, in fact so significant that Engadget and other tech blogs would be going nuts.
the Palm Pre Plus is going to have 8gb of extra internal memory and double the RAM of the 1st generation Palm Pre (aka 512mb of RAM)
Too much chin now that the button's gone.
@Mach
I agree! I don't understand why people hate the center button. I think it's aesthetically pleasing and visually harmonious. Much like the Palm Pre girl.
@Mach
They pulled an Apple.
Design v. function.
@ Floppy: I dunno, it seems kind of odd from a design standpoint as well.
@Floppy
Is that why the iPhone still has a button on their 3rd generation phone?
what happened to at&t??
