Apple has just updated its online store with a shipping date for the
3G-equipped variants of its iPad. As you can see, all varieties of the hallowed Apple tablet should be out and about
by May 7th -- meaning that some deliveries could sneak out even earlier -- and you can expect AT&T will be ready and waiting for you to activate that $30 a month
unlimited data plan. Just for the European record, that means the iPad will be out in full force for American consumers three days ahead of the
announcement of specific international availability. Ah well, at least that gives the UK and others hope that they might see the 3G and WiFi-only slates coming out at the same time, which should be somewhere around the end of May.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: We've heard from numerous tipsters that 3G iPads pre-ordered before today are still on track for a somewhat woolly "late April" delivery. It seems, therefore, that the new date relates to pre-orders being taken from here on out. Here's the direct quote from Apple's email:
"To Our Valued Apple Customer:
Thank you for your recent order of the magical and revolutionary iPad 3G.
We would like to confirm that your order will be shipped in late April as communicated at the time you placed your order. You will receive a confirmation notice when your order has shipped."
OK. Any news on contract prices from the carriers?
@MarkAnderson hey man, here is the info on the ipad data plan
http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/apple-ipad-3g-service-plans-on-atandt-30-for-unlimited-data/
@Yankees Win
Sorry if I am wrong, but I think he is referring to anywhere other than the USA?
@Outsider Or the other networks in the US
@MarkAnderson How about international? June? July?
When the fuck are these things coming to the rest of the world?
SCREW YOU GUYS! We don't even have a release date here in New Zealand yet for the regular flavour iPad.
@Twitchy No biggy.
@MarkAnderson I don't care what anybody says $829 bucks for something that can barely do what most new model netbooks can do requires extra hardware to maybe equal one is crazy. When it is all said and done this thing will cost more then my quad core lappy and my kindle combined.
@TheOne Yeah. But its fun.
@Twitchy and what is the rush...what is it you need to do so badly you cannot do already...oh i get it, show off your toy
lol omg $829? are you f___ serious apple?
@MarkAnderson : I went to an Apple store this week (Yes, I did) and I played with a iPad for 20 minutes. :) Wow, the games on that thing just pull you in and steal your soul. (I almost bought one)
...I love Flight Control HD! :P
@Yankees Win The lack of a webcam is completely inexcusable. It's such a logical component for this device it really makes one think if it was left off for the sole reason of selling more units next year when Apple suddenly invents it. Anyway, let's see how this one comes out. http://j.mp/apple-tablet-experience
@Xtole
so...$130 for a broadband card and a special SIM card?
@Duckman
With telia-sonera, if you allready have a dataplan on your phone, it's 4 euros a month for extra sim card for ipad. They will share the number so you can't use both same time, but that's the only drawback.
Guess the US deals look sucky compared to that.
@Xtole Yeah. The iPad is pretty expensive when you actually look at it. I think a 16GB version would be gimped by the lack of storage, yet the 64GB + Accessories is going to be almost $1000 out the door.
For a "netbook" killer, you have to question the 2x-3x increase in cost for the Apple brand name, touch screen interface, and lack of freedom to install whatever app you might want (or commonly installed plug-in)
Having used our company R&D iPad, I have come to the conclusion that it is a novel device, fun for the first day or two, then it turns into something slightly annoying.
You can't really type as fast and clear as a keyboard. Connecting the keyboard/stand combo takes up more room than a netbook or small laptop. There are many times with notetaking I wish it supported a pen input like Wacom touch screens do. The lack of Flash is a pain in the a--. Regardless of the Flash haters, there are still plenty of instances after browsing for a week where I wish I had Flash.
@Twitchy
Us Dutchies neither. Luckily, we have magical and revolutionary drugs to take care of that one ;)
Why do we need to call AT&T? I thought it activates right from the pad!
@fumjum who said you have to call AT&T?
@thebrandontyler I did in the original post. Loose phrasing that has since been corrected.
@Vlad Savov I see. I guess I missed that original post.
Only $829? Sign me up for four.
@Ducman69
Apple charging people through the nose for Flash RAM as usual.
I'm still sceptical about Apple putting a MicroSD slot in an iPhone... that would destroy their entire upselling schtick.
@Kevin6432 free shippin' dude!
@Ducman69
I'm getting one for my cat! Check out how much fun he's having:

@cherryboom
What?
@Gregorian
LOL.... cuz flash storage is usually so cheap
@Gregorian You're confused. The buzz is that the new iPhone that we saw in the pictures has a *MicroSIM" slot, not MicroSD. In other words, it uses the same type of tiny sim card that the iPad uses -- and pretty much nothing else.
Of course that leads me to the question: Can I activate a SIM for data on my iPad and then pop it into my iPhone HD (or whatever its going to be called), set up a sip account on the sip service it multitasks, and have my iPhone for only $30 bucks a month? Free calls courtesy of Google Voice/Gizmo5 combo?
It seems plausibly possible, and given the ridiculous savings of $50 bucks a month, worth paying the ETF to do.
@Faxmonkey it'll probably be able to authenticate off of the network somehow, AT&T might seem to have their head up their @x$ but I do think they know how to protect their $$.
@Gregorian MicroSIM not MicroSD. :-D
jesus, apple just cant make enough can they
/s
Why does Canada always get forgotten?
@LightShow Ask Rogers and Bell :)
@LightShow
Because we have a lower population density. God, I hate Canadian telecommunication companies, all of them.
I laugh at Americans who whine about 2 year contracts.
@LightShow You'd think those moose racks would make good antenna. *shrugs*
can u still get gps with the wifi version? or does the gps, in the 3g version, work on wimax?
What would be the real difference between 3g version and ipad wifi w/ wimax?
@pedmart $130! I have the wifi w/MyFi and works great. pretty sure its without the compass and 'assisted' gps....no idea what the 'assisted' means. but if its hiding somewhere on the wifi max, someone let me in on where?
@porkchopfx Assisted means your location is triangulated thru towers where u are getting cellular signals from.
@enaybee uh no, that's straight triangulation. iphone/ipad does that but only if GPS fails. it -does- require a data connection because it pings the cell towers for satellite information (where they are, etc) just because it takes too much power to seek out satellite signals on it's own because of signal fragmentation and degradation. (this is why it's called assisted GPS)
I am pretty sure May 7th applies to everyone who orders from here on out. My order status still shows late April. I bet Apple has run through their initial allotments and this is the day the next allotments are available.
@gibbz
I'm pretty sure you're right, I just got an e-mail from apple pasted below:
To Our Valued Apple Customer:
Thank you for your recent order of the magical and revolutionary
iPad 3G.
We would like to confirm that your order will be shipped in late
April as communicated at the time you placed your order. You will
receive a confirmation notice when your order has shipped.
i'll sell you mine for $1500 with free fedex anywhere in the world. :) 64GB version too
3G! Wow, what a revolutionary feature! Obviously they didn't put it in the first iPad since the technology definitely wasn't available. Oh Apple - always at the edge of technology, always innovating! Steve Jobs is once again proven himself as iGod.
-_-
@paul34 What's wrong with you? There there have a cup of hot chocolate and go back to bed.
@AdmiralKlingon
There was no Klingon Admiral!
@paul34 drink much kool aid mate?
@Bongo123
Apparently you didn't notice the emoticon at the end. It's sarcasm, mate.
@paul34 Is this seriously the first time you've heard of this?
This isn't a "Second" iPad. There were two versions. Always.
Since he announced the iPad.
Jesus..
@SoulCrux
Not quite. One shipped originally, and then there's this one that is being sold as a product different enough to be shipped separately with a primary differentiating factor, 3G. A feature which was very much so available with the first set of iPads that went out, but was never implemented.
