Google I/O recap: more web than you can shake a frozen dessert at
Whew, Google really knows how to pack it in. Two days of Google I/O and we've got enough info on the future of the web, phone, and television to write a couple sci-fi novels and retire. Of course, we aren't just bystanders here: we've also gotten our hands on the latest version of Android (2.2, codenamed Froyo) and put its through its speedy paces. You can catch up on all the action below.

Oh Google.. the new media overlords.
@chanceusc +1 to you, +100 to Google, my media-O-verlord.
@chanceusc Not sure if they will be overlords just yet. I'm actually pretty excited to read the next entelligence article. I'm sure Gartenberg will have one out in a few days. Never thought I'd say that :)
@juanvaldez
Yay Google!
@futurerheza
Ps i just went to google homepage (google.co.uk). Check out the new google doodle!
@Apple Google Microsoft
I just found out you can play it too! use your arrow keys!
@Apple Google Microsoft
If you keep pressing the "Insert Coin" button, you can also play two player on the same keyboard.
Ms.Pac Man uses the W,A,S,D keys, and Pac Man uses the Arrow Keys.
Way to Kill productivity on a Friday Google! (though it doesn't take much...)
@chanceusc LOL now that may very well be the plan.
@chanceusc
Google, soon to be the new * overlords.
I'm not getting this whole Google TV thing yet.
Are we able to have subscription models to get channel and network packages?
And will this be available via HTPC or is it device-related only? (the Special Box connected to TV.)
@BMills Yeah I think we need more details. I just don't see how this is any different then HULU right now.
@BMills I don't know the answer to your question, but even if the answer today is no over time it'd want to be in as many "boxes" as it can (the boxee-model), and since I think they are giving it away for free to OEMs there's no reason they shouldn't desire to give it to HTPC OEMs and end-users alike.
@nando2323 first of all, it integrates Hulu and much more, so that's how it's different than Hulu. Hulu is more of a media-server of proprietary content, while Google TV is more of an aggregator (not a word apparently) of available content (and of non-video, again Hulus claim to fame).
Guaranteed Google TV is much more complete than Hulu, even if it rests on the backs of Hulu, abc.com, the internet and anywhere else you can find the information/video you want.
A much better question was asked by Nilay "How is this better than WebTV?" Which I'd say, first and foremost timing. Second, branding. Third, content availability (probably really re-iterating my first point, but I could actually make a long-winded point of why it's different and supplemental.)
@BMills
Neither am I...but don't say that to the android fanboys...they might just downrank you for daring to question anything google makes or creates.
@TheLondonExchange I'll just downrank you for being a complete jackass and finding the need to complain on just about every Google article out there. It's almost reflex now when I see your name.
@djt
What a hypocrite.
As if you don't come into every single Apple post bashing Steve Jobs, Apple, and Apple Supporters and Apple fanboys...
HYPOCRITE.
All of you android fanboys are. When you stop posting in Apple posts bitching and moaning about the iPad, the iPhone, iPhone OS, etc etc then I'll stop posting in android threads.
As it is I ignored most of the google i/o shit yesterday because unlike you idiots I'm not compelled to attack Engadget for reporting a lot of news on a company I don't particularly care about.
In fact if you look closely and you are HONEST the only threads regarding google I did post in yesterday were the google tv ones. Because I was perplexed as to what this service was and how it would be affect tv.
@TheLondonExchange No I don't. Just look at my posting history. I try and keep a level head. I just can't stand trolling which is what you do. You love to throw out calling everyone else a hypocrite but you are part of the problem. I base my assumptions on your entire posting history here.
Generally I stay out of all Apple topics because I just simply don't care to do things the Apple way. Its just not very cohesive for me. I think they make great products however. All you do you is come in here to criticize people who are fans of Google products. I am a fan of all products. I am a hater of fanboys and the anti-fanboys. You are not so much an Apple lover as you are a Google hater. It's been played over time and time again but yet, you are not banned. Unless you have something CONSTRUCTIVE to say you should just keep your mouth shut.
@TheLondonExchange Oh and to keep myself on topic. I'm not sure how amazing this Google TV will be either. It's a little to early for me to make a decision. Personally, I think MS is probably in the best position right now to offer a more enriched TV experience with Media Center and the Xbox. But seeing Google throwing their hat into the ring is an interesting development. This will force Apple to step up their game as well as MS. I see good things coming from this because its going to cut into the Cable companies services and may put them on notice.
So I think this could "potentially" be a great thing for consumers but its far to early to tell.
@djt And some of us will down rank u too ;)
@teab @djt And some will uprank you, djt!
Google I/O will be the event to compete with for quite a while, Steve Jobs will literally have to sacrifice a lamb on stage to hold my attention at this WWDC, but I pray it will be as impressive
Awesome typo in the title. Few people shake barren wastelands around, even google
You've obviously never been to Pakistan
@cbull What makes you think you have the authority to underestimate Google? You just wait, they will be shaking barren wastelands around all over the place. And then there will be you, head in your palm, saying "how could I be such a fool?"
@wemustcontrolpeople I'll be paying when there's sand everwhere...
Skynet has just gone live...
Personally I have my own HTPC connected to my TV, which I can upgrade and modify any time and I don't need any of that...!
@dtakias
Yes this is my point. We need internet-delivered channel packages.
I built an HTPC, and I do not want DISH, or FIOS, or COMCAST.
I want a company to say, "at a $20 price point per month, you can built a package out of 30 channels. Any channels you want."
There can be other packages above that with like 60 and 90 channels for more money.
I have no interest in "here you have 250+ channels for only $79.95 a month"
A la carte please?
The Adobe fella is sooo off in that picture. Just for not being white...
"Google I/O recap: more web than you can shake a frozen desert at".
I think you meant "dessert". Unless you're trying to make something out of the desert being frozen over - in which case, I didn't get it. :(
@whySoSerious You think they would have caught this by now? Good catch.
Has any carrier thought about offering Froyo-esque desserts for those who buy the first handsets on opening day?
*standing in line*.... "Hey, Bob, what are you doing?"
"Gettin' my Froyo on!" (pun intended)
i don't know about you - never seen the sahara freeze...
guess google has more power than we all thought - not only the power to nearly freeze h*ll over but also the ability to shake the geography!
google vs. apple- which has more power over our collective lives? both wanting more & more control and influence
while i have liked products from both, it reminds me of the saying - power corrupts...absolute power corrupts absolutely
Surely you mean "shake a frozen dessert at"?
Shaking a desert is a feat possibly only Google could perform...
There is more than a billioin worth in personal fortune on those chairs xD
i like your name
ALL MIDDLE-AGED WHITE MALES.
C'mon, how about some freakin' DIVERSITY?
@linus809
Gina Tripani is not only Female-esque, but a carpet muncher. What more do you want!?? Eric Schmidt straddling a quadriplegic black man?
@Wesscoast
I was just remarking on the photo. Someone mentioned that the Adobe CEO isn't Caucasian, but aside from him, pure white bread up on stage.
@hated one
So you finally got it that Apple is primarily a hardware company and Google is a software company. Man, your brilliance is shocking. LOL
Google's stock performance since they pissed of the Chinese hackers?
A horror show.
Oh well, nice free OS. Investors outta love that! If it weren't for the whole free thing, you'd be the Microsoft of Mobile OS's.
desert or dessert?
@SeeKo
I don't understand what your point is. Just because Apple can make expensive things you can mindlessly buy does not make them innovative or at least more innovative than Google. Google is always pushing out new experiments and ideas. Apple makes the same thing over and over again.
How much has the iphone os changed even with 4.0?
How much has android changed?
Google adds much much more to its software and it gives its users what they want.
Apple gives you small updates and makes them seem huge. Not innovative.
P.S: Comparing hardware between Apple and Google is just plain stupid.
This is why Apple still ahead of Google, simplicity. The whole keynote was just a big giant all over the place mess. Google also will find out why combining the web and TV is not an easy fit. Theirs is just too complicated, people likes simplicity, there lies success.
Nevertheless, I welcome Google's will to try anything.
So... here's what I don't get.
if there will be no more future iterations of nexus one... then what phone will initially have Android 2.2 in the future? by now, every manufacturer has their own skin and custom UI... even the original myTouch will be updated to the espresso UI instead.
all i want is an upcoming bone stock android
by the way, i meant a stock Android 2.2
What a bunch of half-dressed slobs. Not a tie in the bunch. Those chairs look really uncomfortable, too.
Apple has one smartphone on the market with one carrier and android has several devices on multiple carriers and yet apple still sells thousands of iPhones. Tell me who is doing something right.
Hahahaha. What an epic fail.
Flash on FroYo? Fail.
GoogleTV? I can smell the desperation of a collapsing ad market from here.
The Apple digs? Note to Google, no one except jerk-offs who think they're too cool for the Apple Store gives a shit about you.
Except, of course, regulators, and the general public in the very near future, after it becomes widely known that Google is synonymous with lying thievery.
Make room over at Leavenworth - here comes Eric, Larry & Sergey, The Three Thieving Stooges.
@hated one
how much is steve paying u to blow him?
have some dignity man!
