  • Don't expect a Blood Dragon sequel from Ubisoft

Despite its status as a critic and fan-favorite, Ubisoft has no plans to develop a follow up to the first-person spoof of 1980s-era action films known as Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Ubisoft Montreal creative director Alex Hutchinson broke the sad news to IGN during a recent podcast, though he hinted that the developer might have something else up its sleeve. Something unexpected. "That's was what was cool about [Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon], it was surprising," Hutchinson remarked. "It was a great use of the Far Cry 3 base, and had an awesome soundtrack. But no, you won't get another one of those. But hopefully we'll be able to surprise you with something just as much." Hutchinson offers no further details, nor any guarantees that this "something" is an actual product as opposed to a hypothetical thrown out by a developer put on the spot by IGN's podcast crew. Still, a hypothetical something is better than a concrete nothing. [Image: Ubisoft]

Heading out to your local music shop on April 19 for Record Store Day to get some fresh, block rockin' beats? Keep in mind that the soundtrack to last year's radically insane Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon might be among your options of choice jams to throw down during your next spin session. Or ... you know, available as a LP for you to casually enjoy around your house. Wax Poetic's collective list of rumored RSD inventory states that Invada Records will be distributing the soundtrack during the annual event. A tweet from Invada's UK Twitter account earlier today states that it will announce details of its RSD releases in the coming week through its newsletter and social channels. • Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon director building 'dream team' for new project

    by

    01.29.2014

Dean Evans, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon's director, is already assembling a team for his next game. It's not a follow-up to the standalone laser-filled neon shooter, but rather a new game – a "dream project." "It's the one all of us have always wanted to make and it seems like they're gonna let us do it," Evans told Polygon. Evans and his team are currently occupying the former offices of THQ Montreal, which Ubisoft snatched up during THQ's liquidation. Evans has already enlisted a concept artist, Darren Bartley, and an unnamed art director whose past experience includes AAA stealth games and third-person shooters. "These are two guys I've wanted to work with for a very long time. And because of how Blood Dragon went down, I've got the trust from the guys upstairs [at Ubisoft] to go and build a compelling and unique universe." Evans added that this doesn't necessarily mean we'll definitely see his game released – Ubisoft could still pull the plug at any time. "The audience I'm interested in speaking to is people that dismiss games and don't consider themselves gamers," Evans added about this new project. "There is so much we can do to bring new gamers into the fold, but we're constantly putting up barriers all the fucking time." But, as far as a Blood Dragon sequel is concerned, Evans thinks the universe could support another game. "If we do something we want to make sure we take our time with it. When working on the game, I built a universe - and that's the most amazing process to go through, your world building. And when you build a world and you build a universe that has tight logic on it, you have longevity in that." Last year, actor Michael Biehn, who plays Blood Dragon protagonist Rex "Power" Colt, said that Evans was pitching the idea for a sequel to Ubisoft. Unfortunately, Ubisoft did not respond to our inquiries on the matter.

  • More Far Cry 4 evidence emerges, this time from an Ubisoft resume

Ubisoft may not want to publicly acknowledge the existence of a new entry in the Far Cry series just yet, but that won't stop its employees from citing the game in their resumes. Xavier Plagnal currently serves as Studio Design Manager at Ubisoft Shanghai. A visit to his LinkedIn profile reveals that from September 2013 to the present Plagnal worked as Content Director on "the next Far Cry." It doesn't say what exactly he directed for the game, nor does it offer any word on the game's plot, setting or the platforms it may appear on. Though we can't say for certain that a new Far Cry game is in the works until Ubisoft officially confirms it, the claims made by Plagnal's resume line up with earlier indicators of its existence. In October, Cliff Martinez, a composer best known for his work on the film Drive, let slip in an interview that he was "working on a video game called Far Cry 4." Only a few months prior, Ubisoft Senior VP of Marketing and Sales Tony Key stated that "[Far Cry is] a great brand, and now it's got the recognition it deserves, so we're clearly going to make another one."

Anxious to take a trip somewhere beautiful yet superbly dangerous? From now until January 14, Microsoft is discounting select Far Cry content on Xbox 360 as part of the Deal of the Week promotion. For $5, you can snag Far Cry Instincts Predator, Far Cry 2 or Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Dropping $15 will get you Far Cry 3, while an extra $5 will secure the "Deluxe Bundle" DLC full of additional single-player missions, unique wild game to hunt and a variety of weapon unlocks for the campaign and multiplayer. Far Cry 3 was very successful for Ubisoft and helped to steer the company toward focusing on more open-world games. Ubisoft has said Far Cry 4 will "clearly" happen and Drive composer Cliff Martinez mentioned last year that work had already begun on the sequel. Ubisoft has yet to officially announce the next game in the series.

The Far Cry Compilation bundle features Joystiq favorites Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3 and, the standalone riot, Blood Dragon. PlayStation 3 owners can stalk the jungles of the Far Cry universe on February 11 when the set is released at retail for $40. Joystiq has asked Ubisoft if Far Cry Compilation – as it's officially named – will arrive on other platforms, but has not heard back at the time of publishing. Update: Ubisoft tells Joystiq that, in the United States, Far Cry Compilation is only coming to the PlayStation 3. Details for other regions are forthcoming.

Team Joystiq is barging into 2014 with a celebration of last year's best games. Keep reading throughout the week to see our assembly of ingenious indies and triple-A triumphs. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon It's still hard to believe that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon exists, and perhaps that's why this standalone expansion is so great. Who'd have thought Ubisoft had it in them to greenlight a Far Cry 3 reskin that traded the 2012 game's colorful jungle and wicked undertones for 1980s neon, Michael Biehn, and dinosaurs shooting lasers out of their eyes? Not only does it provide a wonderfully excessive version of Far Cry 3's open-island action, but with its dumb humor and loving pastiches Blood Dragon crams an impressive number of standout moments into one bite-sized package; this passage of play (spoiler warning!) is without doubt one of my favorite moments from any game in 2013.

There are no surprises in the Xbox Cyber Monday sale, with today's deals lining up as announced last week. That said, there are at least a couple of offers worth highlighting, including one for the most appropriate game this Cyber Monday: Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon. The standalone follow-up to Far Cry 3 is at 75 percent off, meaning you can gorge on all its 80s cyber-cheddar for $3.74. That's the standout deal to us, but the excellent Dark Souls at just $5 is not far off it. Other nods go to Red Dead Redemption, The Witcher 2, and L.A. Noire, each of those going for $7.49, and to co-op beat-em-up Battleblock Theater, which is down to $4.94. For the full list of one-day-only cyber-discounts, head over to Xbox.com.

First up, publisher Devolver's dropping discounts on Hotline Miami ($2.49), Shadow Warrior ($26.79) and the Serious Sam series ($14.24 for all of 'em). Also discounted this weekend is Sega's strategic Total War: Rome 2 for $44.96, which is 25 percent off. Wrapping up the weekend deals (as far as we know, at this moment in time) is a bundle of Call of Juarez Gunslinger and '80s neon wash romp Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon at 50 percent off for $12.50 – also available at $7.50 apiece. Steam reserves the right to add even more weekend sales whenever it feels like it.

More than a million gamers have fired their neon lasers at neon soldiers and neon reptiles (which also shoot neon lasers) in Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told Game Informer that the "mini-AAA" game has sold more than 1 million units to date, and that developing and publishing games like Blood Dragon and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger will be a continued business model for the company going forward. Guillemot also teased that future sales of Blood Dragon may not be limited to digital copies. Although Guillemot didn't specify when or how likely the scenario was, he suggested that, "maybe we'll go retail at one point so we'll be able to achieve a bit more." You just can't keep a good cyber-commando down.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon now grants players the option to hit the reset button on the garrisons found across the island. Ubisoft announced today that a patch for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC will add the "Garrison Reset" option to FC3: Blood Dragon, similar to the "Outpost Reset" option already found in the regular game, FC3: Rich Kids of Instagram. The option allows players to wash away their violent sins and experience a baptism of blood in every camp again without having to restart the entire game. If you've yet to try out the hit standalone expansion, which has sold more than a half-million copies, allow our neon-glowing review to highlight it as a summer treat.%Gallery-187174%

Ubisoft's standalone and neon-loving throwback, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, has surpassed 500,000 total units sold on XBLA, PSN and PC, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told GamesIndustry International. While Guillemot neglected to break down how Blood Dragon's sales were spread by platform, he did specifically call out boosted Far Cry 3 sales on PC as a result of Blood Dragon's favorable reception. Blood Dragon's critical and commercial success as a companion product is something that Ubisoft will investigate, Guillemot said, so it's possible that Ubisoft may try and use this formula again in the future. Cheesy-awesome retro news today, as Ubisoft has announced the release of a Blood Dragon asset pack for the Far Cry 3 map editor. The "Mark IV Style" pack for the editor allows players to create levels with the same neon-drenched visuals as Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (pictured). The pack is available now for free on Xbox 360 and PS3. We haven't spotted it on either Steam or Uplay, but we're checking with Ubisoft regarding a PC release.

  • Mike Diva's live action Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon trailer is dumb bliss

There's something about Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon's ridiculous setting that is really resonating with people. Prominent YouTuber Mike Diva (real name: Mike Dahlquist) has constructed his own take on the universe, producing the above trailer whose highlight may be a chase sequence featuring cloud surfing. Or maybe it's Rex atop a flying shark with lasers on its head. We're having a tough time deciding. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon launched at the end of April through Xbox Live, PSN and PC digital distribution channels, a game our review said "broadens the appeal of its source, thanks to a hilarious, accessible dollop of nostalgia, coated in the mechanics that made Far Cry 3 great." Michael Biehn, who plays protagonist Rex Power Colt, has said that Ubisoft is currently considering a sequel based on sales exceeding expectations.

Creative Director Dean Evans is interested in a follow-up to Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, at least according to Michael Biehn, the game's star voice talent. In an interview with Xbox's Major Nelson, Biehn said from his understanding Blood Dragon is exceeding Ubisoft's sales expectations by five times, and Evans is now considering a sequel to the retro spinoff. "Dean was with me on the phone last night, he called me last night," Biehn said on Major Nelson Radio. "He was pretty jacked up. He was going into a meeting today, to.. I think he wants to turn it into some sort of franchise. He's got a sequel in mind." We gushed about the "most excellent" Blood Dragon in our review, so seeing Sgt. Rex Colt return to a screen near us could be a great thing. Having said that, we do wonder if the comprehensively nostalgic game has anything left to add to the pastiche. In the meantime, we've reached out to Ubisoft for comment.

Turn your brain off and let Far Cry 3's standalone expansion Blood Dragon bathe you in neon and take you away to a decade long past. Are you thinking about it? No, wrong! What did we say? Brain = off. We called Blood Dragon a "hilarious, accessible dollop of nostalgia, coated in the mechanics that made Far Cry 3 great" in our review. Eurogamer (90/100): "I still don't really know what Blood Dragon is, or how it relates to Far Cry 3, but more to the point: I don't care. If only more blockbusters had this much fun with their legacy." Game Informer (85/100): "Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon has the potential to alienate people with its crass sense of humor and repetitive one-liners. But if you long for an era when smart-mouthed badasses were more concerned with making things go boom than catering to social sensitivities, Rex Power Colt is your man, and Blood Dragon is your game." GameSpot (85/100): "You don't have to love the decade of Rubik's Cubes and Pac-Man Fever to get a kick out of Blood Dragon. But if you do, then all the better: this action-packed shooter will strike all the right synth-pop power chords." Edge (70/100): "This isn't Far Cry 3 at its best mechanically, but it's definitely the game at its most charismatic. Because as a bunch of well-worn VHS tapes at Ubisoft Montreal undoubtedly prove, the '80s knew how to do personality." Destructoid (70/100): "I'd rather have Blood Dragon exist as it does than not exist at all. A game this delightfully stupid can only make the world a better place, and I sincerely hope this isn't the last we see of Rex Colt."

The year is 20xx, and the world is starved ... of imagination. An evil army of soulless game clones is hell-bent on taking over The Industry. No one is brave enough or mad enough to stop them from reshaping the gaming landscape into their drab, browny-grey vision. No one ... except one spin-off game, a retro-fueled standalone commando powered by the twin suns of Parody and Crazy. That game is Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. And it is most excellent.%Gallery-186721%

The soundtrack for Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, the 80s-styled futuristic shooter spinoff, is available for pre-order now on iTunes for $10, scheduled to release with the game on May 1. The soundtrack comes from Power Glove – the band, not the NES peripheral – an Australian duo that dabbles in retro, post-apocalyptic tunes.Blood Dragon, when it drops on May 1, should look something like that walkthrough video embedded above.
