While the marriage of the story-heavy RPG architects of BioWare to Sega's speedy azure mascot may seem like a combination too oddball to believe, we assure you -- the same company who made Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic is in fact making a Sonic the Hedgehog RPG for the Nintendo DS. Need proof? French gaming site JeuxFrance.com has early scans of the next issue of Nintendo Power, including a few details about the game, and a handful of intriguing screenshots. The game, titled Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, will feature eleven playable characters from the Sonic universe, as well as other mainstays from the series, such as chaos emeralds, rotund mustachioed antagonists, and rings. We'll have to wait to see whether the game will feature some BioWare mainstays, such as murderous robots, or opportunities to swap tartar sauce with a member of another species. Oh, wait -- we guess that's a Sonic thing, too.

Whether you're a supporter or a naysayer, the idea of Sonic RPG is one that has caused great debate here at the DS Fanboy offices. Many a line have been drawn in our conference rooms and cafeteria, dividing the staff into separate camps. To cross the line means death. And, as we try to solve our internal conflict regarding the spiky, blue critter from Sega, a new rumor about the game has popped up on our radar. A new U.S. patent apparently reveals the name of the game as Sonic Chronicles, showing Sega is choosing to name the DS game so, or has another Sonic title planned. Odds are, though, that the patent reveals the new name for Bioware's upcoming DS game.[Via CVG]

Game|Life had a chance to interview BioWare President Greg Zeschuk, and CEO Ray Muzyka about the as-yet-unnamed Sonic the Hedgehog RPG being developed for the Nintendo DS. Although no specific details are revealed, the two reassure Game|Life that the series is in good hands.Promising "fast-paced gameplay" and "a rich story," Muzyka and Zeschuk come off as genuinely excited to be working on the DS platform for the first time, and confident that they can deliver a product that is faithful to both the Sonic franchise, and to their previous RPG titles. Though very few gameplay details can be gleaned, the interview does reveal that BioWare plans on utilizing the "cool characters" and major plot elements from the Sonic games. Muzyka also mentions briefly at the end of the interview that the structure of the RPG will be designed for shorter bursts of play, in keeping with the portable format and the speedy pace of most Sonic titles. Let the speculation (and general apprehension regarding the "cool characters" comment) begin!

Battle lines have been drawn at the Fanboy offices. While the delusional idealists of our staff maintain their positive stance on BioWare's partnership with Sega to produce a Sonic RPG, the more practical among us have seceded from their escapist fantasies. We'll not live under a false utopia. Already, we've heard reports of disorder on the streets and outbreaks of violence in our accounting department. The building's fire alarms have been going off ever since a group of writers decided to set all the Sonic merchandise and Baldur's Gate discs they could gather on fire. One editor was seen locking himself in his office, pulling the blinds down minutes before a single gunshot was heard from inside the room. We were ecstatic when BioWare announced its mystery DS project last September. Of course, our naive eyes saw a future filled with handheld versions of Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, or some brilliant new property. The last thing we expected was another bastardization of Sonic's tired franchise, most likely tying in his ever-accumulating crew of terrible friends. It was also the last thing we wanted.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/BioWare_creating_Sonic_the_Hedgehog_RPG_for_Nintendo_DS'; No, seriously. You'll be covered in all sorts of painful pinch marks if you don't realize you're awake and start believing the headline by the time we get to the next sentence. Sega has announced a new partnership with BioWare that will see the Canadian role-playing gurus creating a Sonic the Hedgehog RPG for the Nintendo DS. The currently unnamed game is scheduled for release in 2008. "BioWare is one of the hottest names in RPG development in the world," notes Sega of America president and COO Simon Jeffery. "Everyone at SEGA has huge confidence that Sonic is in the safest of hands, and that BioWare can create the ultimate handheld RPG experience for gamers of all ages."Sega's unlikely to be the only one to feel confident. BioWare's track record, which includes Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights and the highly anticipated Mass Effect certainly indicates that when it comes to role-playing, the developer has become the industry's frighteningly convincing and never wavering cosplayer. The success of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic can also be seen as a testament to their ability to deal with cherished (at least when it comes to older incarnations) properties."We're thrilled to be working with SEGA on Sonic, one of the industry's most enduring and compelling icons," explains Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare. Ray Muzyka, chief executive officer of BioWare adds that, "As huge fans of Sonic ourselves, we're committed to delivering a truly amazing story-driven experience within the Sonic universe, focusing on capturing the character's broad appeal and placing him in a completely original adventure."Alright, back to pinching your masochistic selves then.
