Terraria made quite a splash when it launched in 2011, that its creators ended up releasing it on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U and even on mobile platforms. The 2D sandbox action-adventure title was so warmly received that indie developer Re-Logic announced that it's working on a sequel three years ago. Sadly, you'll have to make do with the original game, because Re-Logic has decided to cancel Terraria: Otherworld's development.

It's always been possible to play games on your smartwatch, but is that really the best way to use that device? The makers of that Minecraft Gameband your niece and nephew won't shut up about think so, and have launched a Kickstarter to prove it. FMTwo's Gameband is a smartwatch that purports to be the first "fully dedicated gaming smartwatch" that's "optimized for on-the-go-gameplay."

  • PSA: Xbox versions of Terraria currently 40 percent off

As part of Microsoft's ongoing Countdown to 2015 digital games sale, a new Daily Deal has appeared that cuts 40 percent from the prices of both Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of Terraria. If that name's unfamiliar, imagine Terraria as a 2D, pixel-heavy fusion of side-scrolling adventure-platforming game elements (a la Cave Story) and the granular resource gathering and crafting systems found in sandbox hit Minecraft. Unlike Mojang's game, however, Terraria offers a more pronounced focus on adventuring, killing giant boss creatures and discovering new, color-coded loot. The end result is a game that's initially bewildering in scope, but quickly becomes addictive in a way that makes the normally mind-numbing act of digging holes somehow entertaining. Thanks to this temporary discount, the Xbox 360 version of Terraria can be purchased for $5.60, while the Xbox One game is now priced at $12. Because it's a Daily Deal though, these discounts will vanish at the end of the day. [Image: 4J Studios]

Terraria arrives on the Xbox One with a bevy of new items and characters not featured in last year's Xbox 360 version, including new construction components, pets, NPCs, and bosses. Over 1,000 new items are included in all, putting it on par with the recently launched PlayStation 4 edition. The port also boasts new tutorials aimed at first-timers, along with a split-screen co-op mode that supports up to four players. The Xbox One version of Terraria is available digitally for $19.99. The PlayStation 4 version of 2D exploration/sandbox game Terraria will surface on November 11, according to a new post on the PlayStation Blog. According to publisher 505 Games, the PS4 version is almost three times as large as the PS3 version, featuring more than 1,000 new items. The PS4 version will also feature a "pinch to zoom" feature using the DualShock 4's touchpad so players can zoom out and see the world of Terraria on a different scale, as well as a bevvy of other improvements. Perhaps the best news for intrepid pixelated prospectors however is that the PS4 version of Terraria will be cross-play compatible, so you'll be able to join up with likeminded players on PS3 and PS Vita. To that end, 505 Games is also bundling a free copy of the Vita version with a new purchase of the PS4 version for a limited time. [Image: 505 Games]

This week's PlayStation Store update submits a handful of new games, crowned by EA Sports UFC for PlayStation 4. There's a demo available already, paired with a fighting primer from EA that should get you into tip-top shape (for putting your tips on top of the right shapes). The store also houses a new console version of Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, and cuts two Ratchet & Clank games, Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time, down to $10 each. Those two make for a good distraction while you wait for the PS4 remake of the original game. Meanwhile, PlayStation Plus subscribers get Terraria for free on Vita, and Shadow of the Colossus and Ico both drop to $5 a pop on PS3. If their steady reduction in price is a secret countdown to The Last Guardian, then we're almost there! [Image: SCEA]

Tomorrow's PlayStation Store update also introduces a lineup of discounts for Plus subscribers, pricing Thatgamecompany's Flower at $3.49, Vita roguelike Sorcery Saga: Curse Of The Great Curry God at $12.59, and PS3 car combat game Twisted Metal at $5. Popular 2D sandbox platformer Terraria will arrive on Xbox One and PS4 later this year, publisher 505 Games announced on the game's forums. Developed by Re-Logic, the PS4 version will feature Cross-Play and Cross-Save functionality with its Vita counterpart, which launched in December. Next-gen players will have access to Terraria's version 1.2 content, including its various improved gameplay mechanics and graphical upgrades that arrived on Xbox 360, PS3 and Vita in April. The publisher says the Xbox One and PS4 versions will also feature "some brand new functionality," though it's unclear just what that means. Terraria is currently free on Vita for PlayStation Plus members this month, which will bolster its already strong download numbers; it reached 1.3 million downloads on mobile devices and one million across PS3, Xbox 360 and Vita as of March. Sony is adjusting its Instant Game Collection schedule for PlayStation Plus starting in July, promising to dish out six free games per month. The games will be divided evenly among its three active platforms, two for each of PS4, PS3 and Vita, and will all debut on the first Tuesday of every month, lasting until the first Tuesday of the following month. Current freebies on PS Plus that had a "nice, long stint" will be gradually phased out in the coming weeks. The House of PlayStation also announced the six games that will be free for the month of June, starting next Tuesday. PS4 owners will have access to Trine 2: Complete Story and PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate, PS3 players can download NBA 2K14 and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time and Vita owners will get Terraria and Mutant Mudds Deluxe for the month. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is Cross-Buy eligible, so Vita owners will be able to download that game as well. [Image: Sony]

    04.17.2014

As expected, the console versions of Re-Logic's 2D sandbox platformer Terraria have been updated to version 1.2 today. The update brings a large list of bug fixes as well as improved gameplay mechanics and graphical changes to the PS3, Xbox 360 and Vita versions, such as a brighter sun and darker midnight portions of the game. Version 1.2's change log is a "direct copy from the PC change log with console exclusive changes added to them," putting the console versions more on par with the PC game. The game has found massive success for Re-Logic on all platforms, topping 1.3 million downloads on iOS and Android and one million downloads across Xbox 360, PS3 and PS Vita as of late March. It first launched on PC in May 2011 and just hit Vita in December. The game's creator, Andrew Spinks, discussed plans for a sequel to Terraria in October, noting that it wasn't in development at the time. [Image: 505 Games]

On April 17, Terraria will receive a "massive and free" update on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Vita. Update 1.2 makes numerous tweaks to the console version and adds plenty of fresh content, including four new bosses, additional NPCs, new pets, and "over 1,000 new items." The console version change log, which the game's official forum notes is "a direct copy from the PC change log with console exclusive changes added to them," notes a few other additions, including new ores, wood types, brick types and the ability to now imbue melee weapons. Update 1.2 makes a few improvements to Terraria's graphical fidelity as well, making the sun brighter and making midnight in the open world darker. "Hell houses have been remodeled," the change log adds, which is itself a feat considering just how lazy the contractors in hell are. The complete list of changes detailed on the official Terraria forum, can be found after the break. [Image: Re-Logic / 505 Games]

Terraria, Re-Logic's 2D sandbox adventure game, surpassed a combined 1.3 million full-game downloads on iOS and Android. The game first arrived on iOS in August 2013 and on Android in September. Additionally, publisher 505 Games announced that Terraria recently achieved one million downloads in total across Xbox 360, PS3 and PS Vita, the latter of which arrived in December. Andrew Spinks, the creator of Terraria, first divulged plans for the game's sequel in October, but was careful to note that it wasn't in development at the time. Spinks later said he'd like to code Terraria 2 in a more portable language so he can bring the game to multiple platforms closer to its PC launch, though Nintendo's 3DS is likely not in the cards for the sequel. • New office means faster content updates, says Starbound creator

In a blog post celebrating the acquisition of a new office space, the developers behind Starbound claim that having all of their personnel under one roof will allow the studio to issue more frequent content updates for the sandbox exploration game. "The programmers have been putting the finishing touches on the system we're going to use to push updates more frequently," wrote Starbound creator Finn "Tiy" Brice. "Essentially we're separating content updates and engine updates. Content updates are going to be pushed to the server as and when content is finished being produced, we're no longer going to wait on engine updates to push them out at the same time. This also means engine updates will get additional internal testing." "The artists have been working on a bunch of new content that's pretty much ready to go as soon as this is done. We'll also be adding the best/most fitting mods to the game with increased frequency," added Brice. "The pace is really going to pick up." Brice also notes that these more frequent content updates will not increase Starbound's version number. Though this won't impact most players, it a thoughtful touch for Starbound modders who would otherwise need to update their mods to match the new version number each time Brice's team adds a new carnivorous plant creature to the game.
