  • Trove will rejuvenate MMO worlds by blowing them up

I'll confess that even after having chatted with Trion Worlds CEO Scott Hartsman about this new Trove project and reading Shawn's very early impressions piece, I was still having difficulty understanding what, exactly, this game was about. Was it just some sort of kiddy LEGO hack-and-slasher with a nod to housing thrown in? How was Trion going to make good on its promise to continually provide a sense of new adventures? And was Trove just a blatant ripoff of Cube World, as some have claimed? Because Trove isn't quite a typical MMO, I needed another phone session with Trion to get a clearer picture of this game. Creative Lead Andrew Krausnick spent an hour with me patiently answering any and all of my questions. The big one had to be asked from the get go. Were you really going to be blowing up the world all the time? Krausnick confirmed that yes, Trion will be doing exactly that. More than that, he said that it would be the factor that would set Trove apart from all of the other games out there right now.

There's another batch of daily deals for Xbox Live end-of-year sale, and today's batch supposedly comprise "2D modern classics," namely Terraria, Spelunky, and Fez. Putting aside if you can even call something a "modern classic," isn't that forgetting that whole other dimension of Fez? No, we didn't mean Phil Fish. Anyway, we're not here to talk semantics: For today only, Fez and Spelunky are cut by 75 percent to $2.49 and $3.74 respectively, while Terraria digs down to a third of its normal price at $4.94. Also, don't forget the Xbox 360 Store has a whole bunch of games staying discounted across the week, including FIFA 14, Bioshock Infinite, and Castle of Illusion.

If you've harbored a distinct craving for a 2D sandbox craftathon on the Vita, you're in luck - after VideoGamer spotted an ad for a Vita version of Terraria in an issue of MCV, publisher 505 Games has confirmed to Eurogamer that the port will reach the Vita in early December. News of the port initially stemmed from the same image that suggests a PlayStation 4 and Vita bundle is coming to the UK in December. If the bundle actually exists, it would be a great way for newcomers to take advantage of the handheld device's Remote Play capabilities, the support of which is mandatory with PS4 games that don't require specific hardware to be played.

  • Terraria 2 planned for mobile close to PC launch, not for 3DS

Terraria creator Andrew Spinks has plans to bring the RPG's sequel to multiple plaforms close to the release of the PC game. Spinks told Pocket Gamer he wants "to code Terraria 2 in a more portable language so it can be released on multiple platforms at launch or close to launch." One platform the game won't appear on is Nintendo's 3DS, though. "3DS is something I was very interested in getting Terraria on but the system unfortunately cannot run Terraria the way it needs to be ran," he added. Spinks discussed his plans for Terraria 2 earlier this month, saying that while the game is not yet in development, he would like for it to feature "infinite worlds" for players to travel between. The original game is expected to be updated further, with its version 1.2 patch arriving at the beginning of October, though the developer said he has considered bringing a small team in to offer support for Terraria while he moves on to Terraria 2.

Your squad of murderous annelids just got a bit more pixelated with the introduction of new, Terraria-themed content to Worms 3. Available now as a free update, this new content includes six new hats drawn from the Terraria item bank, as well as "5 Terraria themed gravestones and a Terraria speechbank." The additions also include 11 Halloween-themed customization items and a handful of bug fixes said to improve the game's asynchronous multiplayer as well as its overall performance. Today's best news however, is that to celebrate this update developer Team 17 has reduced the price of the iOS-exclusive Worms 3 to 99 cents - 80 percent less than its usual $5 price point. This new, lower price will only be available for a limited time. Those interested in Worms 3 can find full details on the App Store.

  • Terraria 2 planned, not yet in development

Terraria creator Andrew Spinks recently discussed his plans for Terraria 2, the direct sequel to the popular RPG from developer Re-Logic. "Terraria 2 is definitely something that will be happening but contrary to several of the articles that went live today I have not started development," Spinks told Joystiq. "I have a list of features and mechanics I want the game to have but that is the extent of the development at this point." As far as those features are concerned, Spinks told Rock Paper Shotgun that while Terraria 2 is "a ways out," it will "have a lot in common with the original. It's gonna be quite different as well. I really want to expand on the whole Terraria universe." Spinks said that he is "locked" in to some of Terraria's established mechanics, such as "the way loot works" and "the way character progression works." With Terraria 2, Spinks said he wants "to have infinite worlds so you're not just stuck to one world. You can travel anywhere. I want more biome diversity in that, too." As for Terraria, he added that the recently-launched version 1.2 will probably be "the last seven-month update" for the original game, but that he plans to finish the "endgame progression" for the update "within the next month or two," as the update didn't include a final boss. He noted that while there may be other updates three or four months down the road, he has "looked into maybe hiring another small team to continue updates while I move onto Terraria 2."

The next update for Terraria's PC incarnation arrives on October 1, according to the game's Facebook page. Described as Terraria's "biggest addition yet," the 1.2 patch adds a host of new content to the game. Players can expect to cast magic spells, wield beam sabers (think: lightsabers, without the IP infringement) and ride on unicorn mounts. New biomes, furniture, clothing options and enemies are also said to be present. A full list of every addition found in the 1.2 patch is not yet available, but the Terrarian Times offers a solid overview of what you can expect to find. It is currently unknown if the additions delivered by the 1.2 patch will make their way into the console or mobile versions of Terraria.

  • Retail box boosts Terraria sales in Japan, potentially Europe

Downloadable hit Terraria will be released in both digital and standard retail box form when it reaches Europe later this month. Initially released on the PC in 2011, Terraria has since appeared on iOS, Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. To date the game has sold more than 2 million digital copies, but for certain European territories publisher 505 Games has decided on a more traditional sales method. "Different territories have different digital acceptance," said Tim Woodley, director of brand management at 505 Games. "We're releasing Terraria in a box in September as we think the lack of digital uptake in France, Germany, Italy etc is prohibiting sales. Terraria has done incredibly via digital, but most of the numbers are from the US." Terraria was released in Japan this past May and has so far sold 110,000 copies. The majority of these have been retail box sales, Woodley claimed.

  • Daily iPad App: Dig deep with Terraria

    by
    Mike Wehner

The easiest way to describe Terraria would be to say that it's like a 2D version of Minecraft, but this would also be selling the game short in many regards. The familiar sandbox gameplay mechanics that the two titles share -- things like gathering resources and crafting items -- mask a much deeper game that lies just below the surface. It offers an experience that will suit a large variety of gamers thanks to the ability to play in many different ways, and progress towards your own desired goal. When you start up Terraria, you are dropped into a randomly generated world with just a few tools at your disposal and nothing in the way of shelter or supplies. You must explore your new surroundings and gather things like wood, stone and iron ore to begin building a proper shelter. For those who found the resource-management part of Minecraft to be a bit much, you'll likely feel more at home with Terraria, as it streamlines the process quite a bit. For example, if you want to gather all the wood on a tree, you don't have to chop each individual portion of the tree separately; you can simply hack away at its base and the entire thing will come tumbling down. This same simplicity is carried over into the crafting menus, where a list of craftable items is presented to you, rather than forcing you to discover the right crafting combinations on your own. Doing basic tasks like constructing buildings, defeating the various low-level monsters that roam the world and speaking to other human characters help to flesh out the world as well as open up things like new items and enemy encounters. Like Minecraft, Terraria doesn't require that you do anything, and you could quite literally play the game for an infinite number of hours doing little more than building a shelter and sitting inside of it. It's up to you to seek out things to do, and once you do a little exploring, you'll realize that the game could well suck up tens if not hundreds of your hours before you see everything it has to offer. Despite drawing influences from a very popular title, Terraria really is its own beast, and you'd be foolish to pass it up on iOS. The Windows version of Terraria costs US$9.99, and while that alone is a bargain, the iPad cuts that price in half to $4.99. It's an absolute bargain and a gaming experience that will be unique for every single person that plays it. A must-have.

  • Terraria digging its way into mobile platforms

    06.03.2013

Terraria is a Steam title that just recently arrived on consoles, and now publisher 505 Games has announced that it's coming to iOS as well. The game is a 2D variant of the Minecraft-style sandbox genre, where players can hack away at squares of various types, recombining and reusing them to build machines, magic items or even dig on down and find various bosses and dungeon environments. The mobile version, says 505, will support leaderboards, achievements and Facebook integration as well, to share screenshots and other information about what you're doing in the game. This move makes a lot of sense, given how extremely successful Minecraft, Deepworld and other sandbox titles of this type have been on mobile platforms and especially iOS. Though it is interesting to note that after arriving on Steam, Terraria decided to work on a console version first and foremost. A few months after release, we'll have to see which version of the game has had a bigger effect on their player base and the bottom line. Terraria for mobile platforms, including iOS, is set to arrive later on this summer.

Terraria already dug up the dirt on PC, XBLA and PSN, and this summer it's heading to tablets and phones – specifically iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8, 505 Games confirmed to Polygon following an initial announcement on Terraria Online. Terraria mobile will have leaderboards, achievements and Facebook integration, and it's in development by Codeglue, with a complete revamp for touchscreen interfaces. Codeglue is responsible for Rocket Riot on XBLA, iOS and Windows Phone, and this year's PSN and Steam platformer, ibb & obb. Terraria is still on its way to Vita this summer, ported by Engine Software.
